Dr Michael Goldstein, a physician from Covina, Southern California, U.S.A., is world head of the Sathya Sai Organization. Those whom a leader appoints at the top of his organization reflect his own quality – or lack of it. Please read Robert Priddy’s article which sums up most of Goldstein’s deceptions and bad behaviour.
Here is a Dr Michael Goldstein’s communication sent to many Sai Baba devotees around the world. (In the world Sai hierarchy, Goldstein at the time was second to Indulal Shah). He refers to the events of September 11, 2001:
“A number of reports have been received from devotees indicating that our Beloved Swami prevented many of his devotees from being injured or killed in the World Trade Center where they are employed or had meetings scheduled. His Miraculous Intervention on behalf of His devotees is clearly evident… They were either late or never arrived…”
In a public meeting in Buenos Aires, attended by some 1500 devotees, October 20, 2001, Michael Goldstein says:
“There are many devotees that worked in the World Trade Center and the Pentagon… And none of them went to work that day, or they arrived late…all the New York and Washington devotees are safe…”
Fortunate for the Sai devotees but unfortunate indeed for the thousands of non-devotees of Sai Baba (Hindus, Moslems, Jews, Buddhists, Christians, and those of other faiths and none) who were killed or maimed in those terrible calamities! Terrible too for those who grieve them. But – never mind, Goldstein’s ‘God’ saves his own. No-one is so favoured as the Elect!

These astounding sentiments emerged from the same Dr Michael Goldstein who:
– In August 1, 2000, returned unopened a registered letter, which had also been copied to other foremost leaders of the U.S. Sai Organization. The nature and purpose of this letter he well knew, since various devotees had expressed to him and other of his most senior leaders their deep concerns. It was signed by 75 well-esteemed Sai Baba devotees/former devotees from the state of Oregon, U.S.A. outlining allegations of sexual molestation by Sai Baba. See link here.
– At a hotel in Fayetteville, Arkansas, grossly disregarded the feelings and submissions of longtime devotee parents, Al (then one of the highest ranking leaders in the Sai Organization, highly singled out, along with his family by Sai Baba)and Marisa Rahm, from, Arkansas, who were entirely satisfied their son was telling the truth, and have since gone to enormous efforts to raise the issue with U.S. civil authorities such as the State Department, and also to major world media.
(Note: This avoidance of the issues and extreme secrecy in the service of their “secret swami” – as the BBC has termed Sai Baba – has been the pattern of Sai Organization leaders around the world – who refuse accountability and, all the more shocking for an organization that preaches compassion, duty-of-care. The cover-up is profound).
– Like Dr John Hislop, Goldstein’s predecessor as head of the U.S. Sathya Sai Baba cult, and others, took Sai Baba at his word when the latter proclaimed himself (according to Goldstein’s email to a great many Sai devotees) to be “purity itself.”
– Told renowned South American writer Alejandro Agostinelli, a presenter and producer for Argentine’s Azul TV, that he would grant an interview only if Agostinelli would, on air, retract the tenor of the previous instalments of the Zona de Investigación documentary investigating the allegations against Sai Baba. In short, the only point of view worthy of note is the official Sathya Sai Organization line.
– Was so evasive, along with ashram officials and other leaders of the Sathya Sai Organization, that the BBC producers got from their top administration and Legal department of the BBC a very sparingly used sanction to film using a hidden camera.
– In the BBC’s The Secret Swami (2004) became so rude and angry that many viewers reported disgust that Dr Goldstein could head an organization that claims to be spiritual. (Indeed, it claims to be divine, and the instrument of the founder who claims to be the greatest incarnation of the divine ever to appear on the planet, and of Sai Baba’s promised revolutionary transformation of the whole world before he dies in 2022).
– Evaded the BBC interviewers perfectly reasonable question about the need for transparency in a public organization.
Revealing Michael Goldstein Quotes from The Secret Swami
“We believe that Sri Sathya Sai Baba is Jesus Christ. Sri Sathya Sai Baba is Buddha. Sri Sathya Sai Baba is the founder of all of the world’s religions. Sri Sathya Sai Baba has always been God”.
“All of these years I’ve seen him interact with his students very, very frequently, in very informal circumstances over many, many years. And because I am a physician I also understand human behaviour. Because of that, if Sai
Baba had done anything of this kind with any one of those boys at any time, ever, I would see something in one of those children’s eyes, I would see something in one of the expressions on their faces that would indicate to me fear, apprehension, depression, something unsavoury,
something inappropriate, something scary, something ominous, I would know it in my heart because I am what I am – a consummate professional. Can you understand that?”

Uganda’s late, more than grotesque dictator Idi Amin tells a television camera about his virtual omniscience:
“Is it true that you said Hitler didn’t kill enough Jews during the war”, asks the interviewer. Despite the genocidal Nazi slaughter of millions of Jews and others, Amin laughs uproariously and says “Why do you ask me about Hitler”?
Idi Amin and Many Sai Baba Devotees Claim God Instructs Them
Idi Amin then declares that, because of God’s instructions, he knows exactly how he is going to die, what will happen in the country in the next few hours and days, and the exact intentions of his enemies. Many Sathya Sai Baba devotees speak of having a direct connection with him, whom they deem to be God, saying that he instructs them, warns them of difficulties and obstacles, tells them what to eat and not to eat, who to speak to and who not, etc.
Idi Amin And Retinue Awash With Tears of Devotion For Sai Baba
Sathya Sai Baba has reminisced on how Idi Amin wept tears of devotion for him, when he visited Uganda in 1968. Actually, Sai Baba goes a step further than Amin, proclaiming that he is the Divine Incarnation surpassing all Incarnations. His devotee propagandists are now fervently downplaying his actual claims by telling the wider public that Sai Baba simply says that “all are God”. Their intellectual dishonesty is patent, for they know full well that he has long and often claimed to have incarnated to save the whole world in his own lifetime, saying that he came as Sri Ram, Sri Krishna, Shirdi Sai Baba, and will return soon after he dies (not that he uses this word!) as Prema Sai Baba.
Sathya Sai Baba Officials Want Devotees to Shut Up About Their Inner Revelations
With a vast Sathya Sai Baba following from many cultures, is it any wonder, then, that the immensely wealthy and powerful worldwide cult, the Sathya Sai Organization, has clamped down harshly on many devotees who have spoken about their dreams and visions? In these, they report that Sai Baba has spoken to them, instructing them, do this, do that, etc. Countless devotees also know cases where he has told them in the interview room that he will heal others through them but where his officials have repudiated accounts of those same devotees – long known for their truthfulness – not to mention that of those very credible witnesses in the interviews when Sai Baba made the statements in the first place. He typically has even ‘materialized’ objects like pendants, ornaments of various deities, etc., that would, he said, assist in this type of healing healing work.
Happy Christmas Reminiscences of Idi Amin
In his (so-called!) ‘Christmas Discourse, 2006’ – which is, typical of his many other supposedly Christmas utterances, devoid of any genuine or sustained references to the Christmas theme – Sathya Sai Baba has, seen and heard by vast multitudes, reminisced warmly about his meeting with Idi Amin. Sai Baba’s close servitor, Dr G. Venkaraman, writes just as warmly about this, actually referring to the Ugandan monster as “Mr Idi Amin”.
Sai Baba’s ‘Minister’ of Propaganda
G. Venkataraman, retired Indian atomic bomb specialist, was the Vice Chancellor of Sai Baba’s university at Puttaparthi, in Andhra Pradesh, South India, and is now Sai Baba’s chief propagandist. He directs a satellite radio station, broadcasting 24 hours 7 days, Sai Global harmony in affiliation with World Space International Radio Service, that is part of a vast Sai Baba propaganda project backed by millions, in an organization that commands billions. As indicated on the official website, it aims to broadcast to every corner of the globe. For example, we have evidence that Sai Baba’s officials like Ashok Bhagani have been closely cultivating British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s powerful Minister Tony McNulty, Member of Parliament for Harrow East and Minister of State, Home Office, and other movers and shakers on both sides of British politics to ensure broadcasting rights in Great Britain. See: Sai Baba’s ‘Minister of Propaganda’ – Dr G. Venkataraman.
Of Love Fests For a Despot, and Tall Self-Proclamations
With such Sai Baba-Venkataraman “Mr” Idi Amin love-festing going on in Puttaparthi, as so manifestly here displayed by the self-proclaimed “Lord of Lords”, “the Father of Jesus Christ”, “the One to whom Muslims, Buddhists, etc., pray”, one can imagine that Idi Amin can even raise a laugh for himself in hell, recollecting that, even though he was not quite God, at least he gained sufficient self-respect to confer on himself the titles: His Excellency President for Life Field Marshal Al Hadji Dr. Idi Amin, VC, DSO, MC, King of Scotland, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Sea, and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular.

Recent blogs at: https://barrypittard.wordpress.com have drawn attention to the (for India) groundbreaking study of child abuse (which this link downloads in .pdf format) recently released by the Government of India via its Department of Women and Child Development. See:
‘Indian Study On Child Abuse. Robert Priddy Comments’,
‘Child Abuse Rife In India. But Who Would Speak Out?‘
‘Child Abuse. Landmark Indian Government Study. Abuse of Indian children ‘common’’
Child Abuse in India. Will Minister Renuka Chowdhury Act?
Having spent a number of years in India engaged in social work among the very poor, I do not know why the important Indian Organization PRAYAS (often simply Prayas) is not mentioned in the paragraphs below, because they were a major role-player in the study. For their opening page on the study, which has many and very valuable links, see here. PRAYAS works within charter and spirit of the UN Convention on the Rights Of the Child, 1989.
The International Save The Children Alliance states:
“For the first time, data on child abuse and neglect in India. A new report by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in India, (supported by Save the Children and UNICEF) released today, reveals the extent and magnitude of child abuse and neglect in India. This is one of the world’s largest empirical, in-country studies covering nearly 12,500 children and 4800 young adults in 13 States.
The Study looks at three different forms of child abuse – physical abuse, sexual abuse and emotional abuse and girl child neglect in families, schools, work places, on the street and institutions. The Study complements the UN Secretary General’s Study on Violence against Children, 2006.
The Study aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of child abuse, which will help formulate appropriate policies and programmes meant to effectively end child abuse in India.
Major findings of the Study:
– Boys, as compared to girls, are equally at risk of abuse.
– Persons in trust and authority are major abusers.
– 5-12 year old children are in the high risk category: across the forms of abuse, the percentage of abuse among them is the highest.
– 70% of the children have not reported abuse to anyone.
– Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar and Delhi almost consistently report high rates of abuse in all forms as compared to other States.
– 2 out of every 3 children have been physically abused.
– Two out of every three school going children are victims of corporal punishment. Half of these incidents are in government run schools.
– More than half of the child respondents reported facing one or more forms of sexual abuse.
– Every second child reported facing emotional abuse. In more than 80% of the cases parents were the abusers”.
Let Us Not Unduly Target India
Note: Some commentors may find it all too easy to point a finger at India. No country must be let off the ‘hook’. In an shortly upcoming blog, we shall look at the incredible remissness of the Australian Government of John Howard, which grossly fails to support key initiatives by some of Australia’s most notable workers in childcare, including by a woman often regarded as a national treasure, Professor Freda Briggs, who is Foundation Dean of the De Lissa Institute of Early Childhood and Family Studies, and Professor of Childhood Development at the University of South Australia. In 2005, in the Queen’s Birthday Honors, she was awarded the Order of Australia (AO). She was named ‘Australian of the Year, 2007’. See Advocates For Survivors of Child Abuse (ASCA), here. The economic rationalists, however, bestow awards as an easy ‘out’, instead of addressing the real issues.

In 1982, an Australian woman had come up to me in much distress. She had heard around Puttaparthi that Sai Baba was not celibate as he claimed to the world but practising homosexuality. Concerned that such stories should be spreading about – and, of course, at that time thinking them outrageous – I spoke to two of Sathya Sai Baba’s foremost followers.
These were Howard Murphet (died 2004, Australia), whose books on Sai Baba have a market well beyond Sai Baba devotees and Richard Bayer then one of the top-ranking leaders of the Sathya Sai Organization in the U.S.A. Howard Murphet responded graciously, speaking of how we both knew of Baba’s ‘glory’ ‘wonders’, etc. But, Bayer to whom I spoke separately, left me standing flabbergasted by his incredibly rude reaction to what had been a query prompted by concern for the woman’s anguish and the feeling that others would be similarly hurt. I had hardly even spoken the first words, when Richard Bayer angrily turned on his heel and stormed away. (I have since learned that he had known of the allegations all along, and also, like so many Sai Baba choses as his core leaders, well known for his high-handedness). Almost immediately, I was called up to the office by Kutumb Rao (sometimes spelt Kutumbarao), the Puttaparthi ashram manager and a former judge of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh. In almost no time, he told me that Sai Baba had instructed me to leave at once. This was a very great shock. It was about 8 p.m. and he refused to allow me even to stay the night. Interestingly, when I returned to Puttaparthi in November 1997 and stayed for 8 months, Sai Baba was repeatedly gracious, sometimes going out of his way to greet me in various ways, and granting an interview.
A Whisper Can Invoke Catastrophic Consequences
Similarly, Hans de Kraker, an Australian who Sai Baba appointed Western Canteen Director 1989-1997, reports being cast out on Sai Baba’s orders, along with a number of others with whom he shared his experiences of Sai Baba doing what in many countries would have to be described as inapropriate touching. These were devotees typically known for their great and selfless service to Sai Baba’s work. Hans de Kraker, now has a graphic arts business in Australia, with major corporate clients. He has spoken out boldly. I find him, by the way, to have more respect for dates and other concrete details than many people tend to, and indeed more articlulate than many who witness to Sai Baba’s sexual abuse of them. The mix-ups of e.g., dates and surrounding circumstances that can occur in accounts of survivors of traumatic episodes unfortunately play right into the hands of those who are insensitive or adversarial and unscrupulous, like defenders of their religious teachers, and not least many lawyers at whose hands many abuse victims describe themselves as being abused twice over.
Being In-denial? Or In Cover-Up Mode? Or Both?
Hans de Kraker told me that he took his concerns to the then head of the Australian Sathya Sai Organization, T. Sri Ramanathan (a former commercial judge in Sri Lanka) and another one of the Australian Sai organization’s most prominent leaders, Dr Sara Pavan (who has spent lengthy times living at Puttaparthi, serving as a doctor in Sai Baba’s Superspeciality Hospital). Hans de Kraker said that Ramanathan, who more recently has worked with senior law students at the Sydney University and the University of New South Wales, immediately went into a recital of how Sai Baba had done such wonders. One example was how (not in person but somehow mystically) Sai Baba had miraculously recovered a diary with his, Ramanathan’s law students’ examination details that he, Ramanathan had lost in Malaysia in transit to visit Sai Baba. Another was how Sai Baba had, again in some mystic sense, had made his non-functioning tape recorder work. Hans de Kraker said that Dr Pavan’s response is that one does not talk of these matters.
I think I understand the in-denial reaction from the inside. It cuts one off from commonsense, natural justice and a compassion unmixed by one’s own defense mechanisms. Click here, where in the article ‘Sai Baba and Sexual Grooming’ I have recounted my own reactions when in December 1997 Maria Quoos (now head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Poland) brought a young man to me who was troubled by his experience, in recent hours during an interview, where Sai Baba had covertly grasped his penis.
Was This ‘Grooming’ by A Sexual Predator? Voyeurism? Both?
Hans de Kraker’s report is typical and can suggest a classic pattern observed by sexual molesters, which abuse professionals term ‘grooming’. This is where the predator, often unsure of who will succumb, or how successful each overture will be, tests and proceeds gradually, until, spider-like, the perpetrator has the victim in his or her web. Hans de Kraker writes:
“During this period (1992-94), I had many (35) private audiences with Sai Baba. During these four years of travels to India, Sai Baba would perform a certain ritual each time he would call me in for a private audience or interview. He would ask me to take down my pants. He would then ‘oint’ my umbilical area, testicles and penis with oil which he ‘materialised’. I had heard of this ritual and it seemed to be ‘common knowledge’ that this was done to balance the sexual energy or kundalini. I had never thought anything of it.”
Appalled Head of Sai Baba’s Australian Organization Quits
The same sinister pattern of cover-up and denial is to be noted in Terry Gallagher’s findings. He was the head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Australia but, like a number of other leaders and rank-and-file Sai Baba followers around the world, he left after making careful enquiry into the sexual abuse allegations. In fact, Terry Gallagher’s enquiries were most extensive. Among other sources, he had spoken privately with a number of Sai Baba’s students, and comments:
“Sai Baba made no comment on our accusations and was only anxious to know who had told us these details, requesting us to tell him several times! … Sai Baba was tense and agitated, and his body language told us all that what we had found out about him was the truth!”

Between 1979 and 1982 I heard four stories that related Sai Baba to homosexuality. The issue here is that Sai Baba makes it clear that he is a brahmacharya – that is, celibate. Myriad have been the gurus who have made the same claim but who have been exposed as having secretly had sex with their followers. One is naturally curious about whether a decent study of sexually remiss clergy in other cultures would show a similar statistic.
One may also point out that homosexuality does not predicate child abuse, and a great many human rights abuses have occurred because of the assertion that the link is necessitated. In the case of pedophilia, for example, experts have stated that the incidence of the latter among gay males is comparable to that among heterosexuals.
These accounts – which are among some dozen ‘warning flags’ that I ignored during my twenty-five years as a deeply committed follower of Sai Baba – came from: Joseph (U.S.A.) in 1979; from Donna (U.S.A.), perhaps in the same year; from Connie R, a neighbour of mine (Australia), in 1981; and an Australian woman who, troubled by what she had heard around Puttaparthi, came to me in anguish in 1982 at Sai Baba’s ashram there. It is these days very easy for me to understand the psychology of in-denialness which leads an individual to dismiss accounts antithetical to the guru whom one so loves and respects.
Like me, Joseph and Donna were of the tiny handful of long-stay Westerners he permitted to live nearby, mostly in Whitefield where he primarily resided in those days, and where I lectured at his Whitefield college. Donna was one of a few who Sai Baba forbade from entering his ashrams, but who were not moved on by the police, which nobody well-enough informed doubted they would have been if the ashram had wished it.
Forever stoic and faithful, Donna would stand outside the gate straining to catch sight of him. It was really quite touching. Someone long at the ashram informed me that either (I forget which of the two) Sai Baba or a Nadi reader apparently had disclosed to Donna had been incarnated whenever the avatar (divine incarnation) manifests on earth, she will be drawn to live near to him. There are many Sai Baba has told this sort of thing to – e.g. ‘You were with me when I came as Sri Rama / Krishna / Shirdi Sai Baba’.
Donna claimed that she had spoken to various older Puttaparthi residents who said that Sai Baba had been homosexual even as a boy. Perhaps Donna was expelled from the ashram for opening her mouth a bit too widely! If so, it is a pattern that can be chronicalled.
Note: Nadis are Indian prophetic writings typically recorded on palm (palmyra) leaves that are purported to give details concerning past, present and future lives of those who come for a reading. See article by Barry Pittard, Vivekananda Has Come Again, Says Sai Baba. But Has He?

Following the recent landmark Government of India study on child abuse in India (Click here), Robert Priddy contextualizes the findings to the Sai Baba issue. Until he retired, he taught philosophy and social science at the University of Oslo, and was the head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Norway. His article is:
Sathya Sai Baba still Very Widely Accused of Sexual Abuse.
The following is a quote from the Priddy article:
“Extremely revealing facts emerging about child sexual abuse in India: The overall credibility of such claims about Sathya Sai Baba is increased notably on the background of the recent release of official research results concerning child sex abuse in India, which indicate that 53% of India’s 40 million children have been subjected to one form or another of sexual abuse (click here) – and it is worst for boys! Compared with 39% of girls who faced sexual abuse, there was 48% of boys! This indicates that homosexual practices including fellatio and sodomy with minors are very widespread in India.
Taboos and cover-ups:
The Indian governmental research report makes clear “The subject of child abuse is still a taboo in India. There is a conspiracy of silence around the subject and a very large percentage of people feel that this is a largely western problem and that child abuse does not happen in India. Part of the reason of course lies in a traditional conservative family and community structure that does not talk about sex and sexuality at all… this silence encourages the abuser and to press his advantage to subject the child to more severe forms of sexual abuse.” This fact alone helps one understand why Sathya Sai Baba and those involved around him have been able to continue this behaviour and extend it vastly, according to reports from defectors and particularly non-Indian victims. Even the devotee parents of most Indian students who allege abuse (mostly in strict confidence to respected investigators) will not listen to the facts from their sons! These adults hang onto their belief that Sathya Sai Baba is God Incarnate and can do no wrong – even to the point of considering anything sexual he may choose to do to be fore the benefit of the molested! This disgrace will not be tolerated by the world at large, and these allegations will never be silenced but will only increase with the years and greater openness in India over such matters”.

In his Christmas 2000 discourse, Sai Baba loudly banged his table in the vast Puttaparthi auditorium, and boastfully pitted the extent of his good works against those of others:
“Have any of them been able to accomplish at least one-thousandth of what Sai Baba is doing? No, no, no!”
He declared,
“No other individual, or no government for that matter, has been able to provide free education or free medical care”
that he has provided.
In fact, it is his devoted volunteers who perform practically all the services for which he claims credit. Besides, many who have sought these alleged free services report numerous hidden costs in his colleges and hospitals, and many devotees have made considerable donations to the Central Trust in advance of applying.
Even though facing the utmost elusiveness by top Sai Baba officials, media and other investigators can question a range of ordinary consumers of these facilities. It is worth noting that not all parents of students attending Sai Baba’s huge educational institutions, or their teachers, are devotees. Nor are all patients and medical, nursing and ancilliary staff in his vast medical medical centres. Investigators will need to use their skills in getting credible witnesses talking. One would look for those teachers, doctors nurses, etc., who may be ready to speak up to bona fide investigators under conditions of anonymity. Courageous whistleblowers are always somewhere to be found too. Investigators should also document, both on camera and in hard copy, the fear that many have in telling what they know of the dark side of the Sai Baba enterprise.

Mick Brown, British journalist and author of several books, extensively researched some of the scandals that continue to erupt for Sathya Sai Baba and his exceptionally powerful and wealthy worldwide organization. Members of the Sai Baba cult – including a great many otherwise educated members from an astonishing array of professions – believe that they are his workers in bringing about the greatest spiritual revolution in mankind’s history.
In a long article researched on both sides of the Atlantic, ‘The Divine Downfall’, Mick Brown of The Telegraph (U.K.), November 12, 2000, wrote:
“For all the allegations laid against him over the years, Sai Baba has never been charged with any crime, sexual or otherwise. And his exalted position in India has until now kept him safely insulated from any kind of public inquiry.
In June 1993 he was the subject of an apparent assassination attempt when five young men broke into his private residence. Two of his personal attendants were stabbed to death and four of the assailants were shot dead by police ‘in self-defence’. Sai Baba allegedly escaped by rushing out of his room and activating an alarm system. In a subsequent discourse, he said the attack was caused by ‘jealousy’. Dr Bhatia told me he believed the attack was linked to Baba’s sexual activities. The guru was never interrogated by police over the attack. The Indian press raised the obvious question: if Sai Baba is omniscient, why couldn’t he see it coming?”

For many years, Dr Naresh Bhatia was a prominent doctor (and head of the Blood Bank) in Sai Baba’s vast but from many reports badly under-utilized Super Speciality hospital at Puttaparthi. There are accounts of his having to flee for his own safety from Puttaparthi and then finally being able to retrieve his possessions only after his undertaking with Sai Baba’s top officials to make no further public statements. A secret swami’s secret India, where at last a landmark study of abuse and the extreme hiding of it has just been released by the Manmohan Singh government. See Resources, at the foot of this article.

The Guru Can Do No Wrong
Dr Bhatia says that he, when younger, was for a long time a homosexual lover of Sai Baba. (The former Swedish film star Conny Larsson, now a drug rehabilitator among prisoners and others, says the same of himself). Dr Bhatia has told me that he still cannot shake off his belief that Sai Baba is Divine even though he knows that Sai Baba has sexually abused very many of his male students and other young males. One may note that the guru tradition in India cannot be readily understood by outsiders. One concept is that one does not criticize one’s guru, no matter what he or she says or does. Rooted in almost timeless history, the grip of the guru and other religious authorities is endemic in India.
On November 12, 2000, in an extensively researched article, author and journalist Mick Brown wrote:
“Contacted by phone, Bhatia said that he had become a devotee of Sai Baba in 1971, at the age of 20, and that he had sexual relations with Sai Baba for “15 or 16 years”. In that time, he said, he was also aware that Sai Baba had relations with “many, many” students from the college and school, and with devotees from overseas.”
When making The Secret Swami the BBC television producer Eamon Hardy also spoke with Dr Bhatia, this time in New Delhi but the segment was not included in the documentary, for which 80 plus hours of footage had been shot, containing many compelling testimonies from various countries that, taken together, depict Sai Baba as a serial sexual molester on a most terrible scale.
Many Indian Gurus Abuse But Followers Shut Up About it
Among my papers, I have a note by a former national leader of the Sathya Sai Organization (who still has not gone public). He had a huge outreach among both Indian and Western devotees. He wrote the note while still a devotee but already going through angst following the upheavals following fusillades of revelations around 2000 in the organization which he and his wife so much loved:
“Talking to some Indian devotees (who by the way are not affected at all hardly any of them have left) they tell us that it is common knowledge that “Gurus” generally have some of those tendencies”
Anecdotally, this scenario would surely suggest the origins of the vast shockwaves right now going through India, following the release by the Manmohan Singh government of a landmark study of child abuse in that country. Where sexual abuse is concerned, Sai Baba the ‘secret Swami’ (as BBC television has called him) is close kindred to countless other Indian secret gurus who but reflect countless millions of ‘secret’ citizens of India. Like those of us in other countries who shut up for the sake of the ‘quiet life’, they are – even when not directly committing child abuse – to an extreme degree, therefore permitting it. For decades, Sai Baba has said India is about to lead the world in spirituality, under his banner. But his own ‘backyard’ (which he has said he will clean up before visiting the world) is in a dire shambles. So is he, as we can see when we examine photos and film footage that emphatically display his decrepitude. He is also increasingly given to unquestionably inane utterances and other odd behaviour. Click here for my articles Sai Baba’s Tip To Keep Ageing Away and Sai Baba – A Degenerative Disease?
Dr Naresh Bhatia – Some Clarifications
Dr Bhatia told me that he felt the threat to his life was very real and that he was concerned that no further harm should come to a young boy who he (and a medical colleague in Bangalore) professionally believed was injuriously sodomized by Sai Baba. For this reason, he says, he has modified his earlier public stance that can be read in David and Faye Bailey’s The Findings (April 2000). Though one child is extremely precious, there can be a great danger to protecting a single individual. Shutting up rather than strong combattive action can threaten the safety and well-being of a great many children.
There Have Been Threats to Life or Limb
I asked Dr Bhatia whether he thought his near fatal accident where a truck hit him was likely to be the work of those on the nasty side of Sai Baba’s outreach. He replied that he felt that the distance and speed from which the truck came before hitting him did not seem focused enough to have been an assassination attempt. I also asked him to clarify a point that has raised some confusion.
The Abuse Patient Was A Level Seven (Primary School) Boy
It had been repeated – either originating, or worse confounded, in the Bailey’s seminal article that a boy was seven years old when very badly sexually abused by Sathya Sai Baba. Dr Bhatia responded that the boy was not seven but was then in Level 7 at Sai Baba’s school at Puttaparthi. He has also confirmed this to my fellow Australian, Stephen Carthew, long known for his courage and truthfulness not least when trying to reform the Sathya Sai Organisation from within, who visited Dr Bhatia in New Delhi 2000. Stephen, who had made kept this visit to India very secret, wrote to me that:
“I found Dr Bhatia delightful and most welcoming, notwithstanding the bind he is in. His own ambivalence regarding the spiritual nature of his Guru and the pressures coming from many sources to keep quiet make it difficult for him to do more than tell his story when asked. Certainly, he believed he was threatened and harassed during his rushed departure from Puttaparthi, after criticizing Sai Baba to his face.”
Abuse Is Too Cruel At Any Age
I should add that, in essence, abuse of a person is still grievous no matter what the age of a victim. However, amongst Sai Baba apologist documents is the incessant habit of siezing on every mistake or inconsistency or inadvertency in the writings of critics of Sai Baba. Any attempt to point out the actual facts results in, for example, further adversarial displays of nitpicking and obsession with peripherals. There are also cases when responding so as to put the record right would entail releasing information that is sensitive and should be secure. However, to genuine and bona fide investigators, such as leading media and those doing studies with well-accredited tertiary institutions, patently sincere enquirers such as those processing the anguish of leaving Sai Baba, and so on, this constraint is often not present.
Note on the Baileys
The Findings reports the Baileys’ discoveries that Sai Baba is guilty of male sexual molestation, huge financial fraud, faked miracles and other criminal and vastly hypocritical deceptions. David Bailey is a well-known British musician who lectured in Music at Sai Baba’s university in Puttaparthi. Travelling around the world as Sai Baba would direct, he was his highest profile roving ‘ambassador’ among devotees. Sai Baba arranged his marriage with Faye, who had previously been a key worker in the Australian Sathya Sai Organization. Unlike so many of the other leaders who know the truth of the accusations, David and Faye were possessed with a conscience. When they spoke out, they had to endure untold scurrility. It went throughout many countries in the Sathya Sai Organization that David languished in jail on charges of paedophilia. Similar outrages occurred when Conny Larrson, former head of the Swedish organization, spoke out. Those of us who were in touch with them on their private telephones were struck by the fact that they were decidedly free – except from the dastardly slanders of many Sai devotees around the world. As has been the case with a number of those of us formerly connected with Sai Baba’s work, Sai Baba’s male students and others who have come under his sway, David and Faye Bailey have been the repository of many accounts of sexual abuse (not to mention other shocking revelations) by Sai Baba. Against almost unimaginable slander and distortion by his defenders, former devotees in various countries continue the attempt to expose these abuses to the world.

It is impossible for many of the Indian students and former students of Sathya Sai Baba’s colleges and university, and others to come forward with their accounts, which are innumerable from around the world of his decades of sexual abuse of boys and young men.
Their parents, relatives and friends are – very often – Sai Baba devotees who worship Sai Baba as God, and are unlikely to believe them, or, in other cases, concoct rationalizations for why Sai Baba would do such a thing. The victims have nowhere to turn, unless to persons such as David Bailey, who was a music teacher at Sai Baba’s Institute of Higher Learning), or Terry Gallagher who, after considerable investigation resigned as head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Australia. They, like even myself once, as a lecturer in a Sai Baba college, had a ‘privileged’ seat on Sai Baba’s veranda. Various Indian and western former students and others who have had close ties with Sai Baba also get in touch with those such as Robert Priddy and me, owing to our high profile in investigating Sai Baba and his movement, and ensuring that information reaches the world more widely. It is essential that their accounts be kept highly secure, such as lodgement in the vaults of a bank. Many may never wish to witness in for example a class action lawsuit but if ever they should so wish the option is there.
A former staff member who contacted me told of how, when he raised disturbing questions with other staff members, he was tipped off by one of his teaching colleagues that his life was now in danger. The Germans Jens and Gurprit Sethi were similarly tipped off and fled from Puttaparthi. They informed their embasssy in Delhi and the German police, and returned to their country for good. If students were to withdraw from their studies, they would lose their education, career and marriage prospects.
In India a great many marriages are arranged, and marriage is in many ways a complex family alliance. Some of Sai Baba’s former Indian students, including those with personal accounts of his sexual abuse of them, have told me that the shame and stigma attached to having been abused by Sai Baba thwarts the type of action former devotees have initiated in the West.
India is a country where survival is often a fight, if not in everyone’s case for food and shelter , at least to achieve and maintain tenuous social position. The abuser is a world-famous religious teacher, in a country with thousands of years’ tradition of intense guru worship and extreme idolising of notable public figures. Sai Baba’s power and influence in virtually all sectors of Indian society is so great as almost to defy the imagination.Discussion of various forms of sexual abuse, such as rape, incest and molestation, is strictly tabooed in India.
A common Indian perception is that only if one has a great deal of money and power, with the ability to use them corruptly, is there a chance of getting one’s story out and acted upon. But even here, who would wish to break the taboo?

(Renuka, in blue sari, and close business friend)
In the last hours, the BBC and other news services have reported on a major study of child abuse in India. See:
https://barrypittard.wordpress.com/2007/04/11/child-abuse-landmark-indian-government-study/
The BBC report says,
“Two out of every three children in India are physically abused, according to a landmark Indian government study”
The Manmohan Singh government of India Minister responsible for the release of the report is Renuka Choudhury (also spelt Chowdhury). Before she became Minister for Women and Child Development, Ms Choudhury was Minister for Tourism who worked hard at driving tourism to Sai Baba and Puttaparthi, where he has his main ashram. She comes from Andhra Pradesh, the same state of India as Sai Baba. Among many other serious accusations, Sai Baba faces worldwide allegations of sexual abuse of boys and young men, implication in police killings in his bedroom on June 6, 1993, and, along with his ashram officials and the Congress Party government of the time (the present Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Party), is accused of a massive cover-up of the scandal.
One of our Indian workers reports dealing closely with Ms Choudhury and briefing her in detail about compelling evidence against Sai Baba. He said that she went to real effort to personally photocopy vital documents our group shared with her and, still further, to go around to the then Opposition leader Mrs Sonia Gandhi’s residence to brief her on them. The rest was silence – which, of course, is the very essence of deep compromise and cover-up.
In her Tourism portfolio, Renuka Chaudhury, in all practical effect, drove large numbers of boys and young males to Sai Baba. This was even though she was in possession of extremely revealing documents (too sensitive to reveal on the Internet) that, among other terrible matters, evidenced years of large-scale, serial sexual molestation by Sai Baba.
How, then, after all, can Mrs Chaudhuri act to rid India of a sexual abuse scourge that implicates such powerful figures as Sathya Sai Baba? Manmohan Singh and so many members of his political party – and indeed the President of India, Dr Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam – are deeply implicated with Sai Baba.
Sai Baba is arguably the most powerful and influential guru in India’s history. How could Renuka Chaudhury and her Ministry of Women and Child Development possibly prevail against one who is so incredibly powerful, and one who the BBC has named ‘The Secret Swami’?

Abuse of Indian children ‘common’
By Geeta Pandey
BBC News, Delhi
This is the first time India has done such a survey on child abuse
Two out of every three children in India are physically abused, according to a landmark government study.
Commissioned by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the study says 53% of the surveyed children reported one or more forms of sexual abuse.
This is the first time the government has done such an exhaustive survey on the controversial issue of child abuse.
Abuse of children, particularly sexual abuse, is rarely admitted in India and activists have welcomed the study.
Releasing the report at a press conference in the capital, Delhi, Minister for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury said: “In India there’s a tradition of denying child abuse. It doesn’t happen here is what we normally say.
“But by remaining silent, we have aided and abetted the abuse of children.”
Thousands quizzed
Describing the findings of the study as “disturbing”, Ms Chowdhury called for an end to the “conspiracy of silence”.
The issue of child abuse has been raised in the past by non-governmental organisations, but this is the first time an attempt has been made by the government to document the scale of the problem.
The study took two years to complete, and covered 13 states where 12,247 children (between five and 12) and 2,324 young adults (over the age of 12) were quizzed.
Dr Loveleen Kacker, the official in charge of child welfare in the ministry, compiled the report.
She said the study had revealed that contrary to the general belief that only girls were abused, boys were equally at risk, if not more.
She said a substantial number of the abusers were “persons in trust and care-givers” who included parents, relatives and school teachers.
Ms Chowdhury said the findings of the study were disturbing
Dr Kacker said a disturbing finding of the study had been that 70% had not reported the abuse to anyone.
Besides surveying physical and sexual abuse, the study also collected statistics on emotional abuse and neglect of girls.
The study called for efforts to make society aware of the rights of children and officials say the data will help them formulate better policies to protect children.
‘One too many’
The report has been welcomed by child rights activists who say such a study was sorely needed in India.
Roland Angerer, country director of Plan International, told BBC News it was “very important that the government has finally taken up the issue”.
“It doesn’t matter what statistics say. Whether the percentage of abused children is 75 or whether it is 58 is unimportant. Each child that is abused is one too many,” he said.
“It’s important that parents and adults must learn that children are not property, that they have rights too.”
In India, parents are often reluctant to admit child abuse and sexual abuse of children involving family members is almost always hushed up.
The study also collected data on how girls are neglected
Perhaps that is why – as the study shows – more than 50% of the young adults surveyed wanted the matter of abuse to remain within the family.
Only 17% of the abused young adults wanted harsh punishment for the abusers.
Officials and activists say the biggest challenge for the authorities and society is to ensure that children are encouraged to report abuse.
India is home to almost 19% of the world’s children. More than one-third of the country’s population – 440m people – is made up of children below 18 years of age.
According to one study, at least 40% of these children are in need of care and protection.
The country has millions of child workers.
Many are employed in hazardous industries and also in homes and small restaurants, which makes them vulnerable to violence and exploitation.
Last year the government banned children under 14 from being employed in homes and at restaurants to avoid their exploitation and abuse, but millions of children continue to work in these sectors.
India is a signatory to various international laws on the protection of children, but implementation of these laws is often lax.

Children vulnerable to abuse during travel, weddings
Apr 10, 2007 – 3:49:12 PM |
|

The survey is expected to develop a dependable and comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon of child abuse. |
By IANS, [RxPG] New Delhi, April 10 – Almost 50 percent of India’s children aged between 5 and 12 are prone to sexual abuse such as forcible kissing and being made to exhibit their private parts during travel, marriage and other family ceremonies, says the national study on child abuse. The figure reduces to half as soon as they cross into their teens, points out a study conducted by ministry of women and child development, UNICEF and two NGOs,Save the Child and Prayas. The survey among 15,000 children in 13 sample states has come up with disturbing data. While 41.17 percent of children in the 5-12 age group complained of being forcibly kissed, the figure came down to 25.73 percent for the 13-14 years category. Similarly, around 25.86 percent of teenagers reported being forced to exhibit their private parts, but the relevant figure for those below 12 was 35.86 percent.
Around 37.25 percent of the younger age group and 27.61 percent of teenagers were sexually abused during travel. As much as 41.33 percent in the 5-12 category and 25.29 in the 13-14 category reported abuse during marriages and other ceremonies in the family.
According to the study, 53.22 percent of the children surveyed faced one or more forms of sexual abuse while 21.9 percent of them faced severe forms of sexual abuse and 50.76 percent other forms of sexual abuse.
What is worse, the report said, ‘around 70 percent of abused children have never reported the matter to anyone’.
While Assam – topped the list of states where children faced sexual abuse, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi followed closely at 72.83 percent and 72.26 percent. Rajasthan reported the lowest complaints with only 29.36 percent.
The percentage of sexually abused young adults – is also high in Assam at 77.5 percent, followed by Delhi at 69.11 percent. Goa reported the least complaints – 23.01 percent.
‘Every second child reported facing emotional abuse,’ says the report. While 68.26 percent of children in Assam reported being emotionally abused through humiliation, the figure was 58.32 percent for Delhi and 55.67 percent for Madhya Pradesh.
The survey is expected to develop a dependable and comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon of child abuse.
‘It will also facilitate the formulation of appropriate policy and programmes meant to effectively curb and control the menace,’ Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Choudhury said.

James Redmond (U.S.A.) is a professional film maker, and renowned throughout the Sai Baba devotee world as Sai Baba’s official videographer. His films have long been available for sale in countless Sai Baba centers around the world.
Sai Baba’s Official Videographer Shoots Frauds in Secret
For many years, James Redmond had unique rights to cover Sai Baba and his public events, and was sometimes permitted to film interviews. However, after satisfying himself first hand of the truth of accounts that Sai Baba has long been a serial sexual molester of boys and young men, James Redmond, informing a small number of former Sai Baba devotee activists – among whom were the late Glen Meloy of Palm Desert California and me – of what he was doing, continued to film Sai Baba. Now primed precisely to train his cameras on Sai Baba’s sleight-of-hand tricks when ostensibly materializing objects, Redmond obtained ever more damning footage.
After a few months, James Redmond sent out a letter to the large mailing list for his videos, mentioning convincing first-hand reports to him of Sai Baba’s sexual molestation of boys and young men and associated frauds as reasons for ceasing his attachment to Sai Baba.
Exposing Sai Baba. Like Mother Like Sons
James Redmond’s professional filming colleagues Mike Ward and Jason Ward (Australians resident in Canada), who likewise had first-hand contact with alleging victims, also quitted. Judy Ward, Mother of the Ward brothers, was once prominent in Australian Sai Baba circles. She was an earlier voice raised, calling for the allegations to be properly investigated. As elsewhere thoughout the Sathya Sai Organization worldwide, there was and is, however, an absolute prohibition on all investigation of the allegations. This is yet another mark of its cult status, and yet it would represent itself to many governments, politicians and mainstream religious and civic institutions with whom it attempts to link, as a responsible organization. With extreme untruthfulness, core leaders tell rank-and-file members that the allegations come from a handful of disgruntled trouble-makers.
Those Australian young males Judy Ward believed to be Sai Baba victims with compelling testimonies given to her personally were (unlike other some other courageous Australians ready to share their abuse accounts with the The Age, ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), BBC and other major media) too afraid to go public with their accounts. Judy Ward wrote a report to the Australian Federal Police, the case number of which she supplied to me. Like other law enforcement agencies in various countries to which former devotees have given their testimony, the AFP said that the best they could do was inform the Indian police authorities but otherwise were powerless to act in cases of offenses committed in another country.
Further Resource:
James Redmond’s videos made when he was a devotee contained material unwittingly caught on footage that has gone around the world. It is immensely damaging to Sai Baba’s credibility. See some examples, inescapable except for blinded devotees, from a Sai Baba discourse which, unlike those highly edited hard copy versions carefully edited with damage control in mind, have escaped into the wide outdoors, see my article (click on article title): Huge Sai Baba Gaffes

British House of Commons: “Sai Baba and sexual abuse of children” Early Day Motion No. 886 November 2000
In November 2000, a petition signed by over fifty cross party Members of Parliament, was made by Hon. Tony Colman, (then) MP for Putney (Labour):
“That this House, mindful of the many accounts and witness statements of the sexual abuse of the male children of devotees by the Indian guru, Sai Baba, calls upon the Foreign Secretary to use the Travel Advice for India page of the Foreign Office Website to issue guidance to British families intending to visit the Ashram of Sai Baba about the possible danger to their male children of individual audiences with the guru.”
For information about how this Motion was suppressed (primary sources of which can be revealed to responsible media, academic investigators, etc), see my article: ‘Flag Follows Trade. Abetting Indian Government Corruption’
