Dr G. Venkataraman, Sathya Sai Baba’s Nuclear Boon Companion

Posted by Barry Pittard on September 29, 2009

Robert Priddy is the former long-time head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Norway and a retired philosopher in the Social Sciences, University of Oslo. He has written insightfully on the extraordinary, often procrustean efforts of Dr G. Venkataraman to rationalise his beliefs in Sathya Sai Baba. The latter is Sathya Sai Baba’s head of Sai Global Radio and deputy chairman of the international Sathya Sai Organization  Though not a physical (actually, nuclear) scientist like Venkataraman, he has an abiding interest in the sciences, and how a certain variety of scientists, in a great minority but with unfortunate influence far beyond their importance, falsely use science to buttress up their religious claims.

The following information may be of particular value for journalistic and scholarly investigators, and also those institutions and agencies which the Sathya Sai cult in many countries attempts to influence – but without portraying their real agendas. For those who may like to hunt and peck among Priddy’s writings on G. Venkataraman, I have excerpted from articles that appear at: http://robertpriddy.wordpress.com

Robert C. Priddy On Dr G. Venkataraman, Sathya Sai Baba’s Chief Propagandist

Dr. G. Venkataraman, propagandist in the limelight

Dr. G. Venkataraman, a physicist, formerly employed in India’s nuclear bomb programme community, became a devotee of Sathya Sai Baba when he suffered major depression after the loss of his son. Being one of the few somewhat notable scientists in the following, he was duly made Vice-Chancellor of Sai Baba’s university at Puttaparthi. He is now on the central body ruling Sai matter, the Prashanthi Council, and is 2nd-in-command of the International Sathya Sai Organization. As head of Sai Global Harmony which broadcasts Sai propaganda en masse via WorldSpace International Satellite Radio Service, 24/7 to a number of countries. The agenda of this multi-billion dollar mini-empire involves penetration of the world and infiltrations of all official bodies, governments, UN organizations and so on. The entire set-up has virtually all of the distinguishing features of a clandestinely-managed religious cult. They exploit the liberal world’s tolerance under freedom of religion legislation, though they operate in a completely top-down, no feedback, autocratic and censoring cult.

Slander by Dr. G. Venkataraman & Joe Moreno

Among the many intentional untruths that has been spun and spread about Barry Pittard and myself is the claim that we somehow are behind the entire exposè of Sathya Sai Baba ….

Dr. G. Venkarataman – head of Radio Sai and member of Sai Baba’s ruling Prashanthi Council – has lied about me on his misnamed “heart-to-heart” website, where he wrote “Robert Priddy who was one of those who started much of this slander claimed that two Vice Chancellors of Universities in Australia supported the allegations.” This is so far the only claim published against my name by any central Sai official. The distinct activity in the exposure of Sathya Sai Baba’s sexual abuses began already from about April 1999  with many testimonies and documented facts about Sathya Sai Baba’s alleged sex abuses, fraud, deceptions – I did not start any of that. The two Vice-Chancellors were contacted before my time by Glen Meloy and Barry Pittard, I have only referred their contacts with them. Since then I have spoken out on many issues known to me (not least through Sai Baba’s close servitor, V.K. Narasimhan – also my close friend and confidante).

Donations to Sathya Sai Central Trust misused by/for directors etc.

The only top Sai official who has ever even mentioned the many allegations against Sai Baba – and then only after a period of six years or more had gone by – is Dr. G. Venkataraman. He has shown his true colours, however, in having written a document full of cover-up and false statements aiming to refute the countless allegations against Sai Baba, which has been refuted in its entirety point by point with full documentation (see here).

Sathya Sai Baba, dictator Idi Amin and G. Venkataraman

In a discourse held on Christmas Day (2007) – of all days – Sathya Sai Baba chose to talk most affirmatively about the spirituality of his meetings with the despot and Dictator Idi Amin. His servile propagandist G. Venkataraman – who ought to have known better – blithely overlooked Idi Amin was a known and self-confessed murderer who had at least five wives and 23 children (plus hundreds of ‘lady friends’), who fed enemies to crocodiles, reportedly kept some of his victims in his deep freezer, and – according to persistent reports of his staff who escaped – even tasted human flesh!

Apologist for Sathya Sai Baba

The only top Sai official who has ever even mentioned the many allegations against Sai Baba – and then only after a period of six years or more had gone by – is Dr. G. Venkataraman. He has shown his true colours, however, in having written a document full of cover-up and false statements aiming to refute the countless allegations against Sai Baba, which has been refuted in its entirety point by point with full documentation (see here).

G. VENKATARAMAN – CHIEF PROPAGANDIST FOR ‘GOD’

To accept Sathya Sai Baba as a universal teacher also means accepting ‘Creationism’

(see http://robertpriddy.wordpress.com/2007/06/18/kentucky-creationism-plus/), That is a totally discredited quasi-theory, banned from education by a 1987 Supreme Court ruling.Venkataraman’s attempt to misuse science to support his belief in God does not befit anyone who truly bends to the scientific spirit.

Dr.G. Venkataraman – physicist ‘explains’ Sathya Sai Baba.

Dr. G. Venkataraman rambles on denigrating scientists and science and promoting Sathya Sai Baba – as God descended to earth – and his most spurious speculations (’teachings’) about an invisible beyond

G. Venkataraman’s out-dated and fallacious ideas – part two. Propagating Sai Baba’s anti-scientific views, Dr. G. Venkataraman – former physicist – attacks science and scientists in general for the usual sins that religionists hold them to be committing. These I refute at some length, as called for.

Atomic physics Puttaparthi style. Deeply intriguing

Some few quotations from many similarly anti-empirical statements and false ideas by Sathya Sai Baba show how he tried to impose on a simplified picture of the atom and the universe a meaning and purpose which is pure speculation… even though it has ancient roots in obscure and often confused scriptures written when humankind was in a very primitive state of speculation and ignorance of the workings of the physical universe. Interestingly, his chief propagandist is a relatively informed physicist (relative to Sathya Sai baba) yet this poor superstition-beleaguered Dr. G. Venkataraman – in his blind faith – naturally fails to challenge any of the Tommy rot his Lord and Master preaches.

Venkataraman – the most gullible physicist alive?

Dr. G. Venkataraman reviews at length developments in our scientific knowledge of the cosmos… though nothing scientific that is not found in hundreds of books and other media. Venkataraman was a physicist working for the Indian government’s nuclear programme. However, he has copied his information on astronomy from other scientific authorities. Yet he does not once attribute anything he reports to its originators or to other scientific sources! He has even plagiarised text from the Dennis Dutton website, without any mention.

Outright plagiarism: Both text and an image ‘lifted’ from denisdutton.com/einstein_eddington.htm by Prof. G. Venkataraman, who also took the following images, all  without acknowledgement:-

The Big Bang’ image from science.hq.nasa.gov/universe/science/bang.html

An Expanding Universe’ from http://www.lbl.gov/Science-Articles/Archive/Phys-SNAP-dark-energy.html
‘The Periodic Table of Elements’ is from http://www.scientificpsychic.com/health/chemistry.html (on which he has even imposed the logo of Radio.Sai!

The Chandra Telescope’ images come from starbulletin.com/2000/01/14/news/story1.html

and from http://whyfiles.org/223orbital_astro/images/chandradiag.jpg

The images of white dwarfs are falsely sub-titled “www.radio sai” but they are taken  from http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/Images/science/hubble_m4wd.jpg

He uses copyright images from the Anglo-Australian Observatory at http://astro.ic.ac.uk/Research/Stellar/images/aat050.jpg

This failure to cite any references in articles on science or academic subjects is regarded as dilettantism by scientists and scholars. The innocent and uneducated may well believe that Venkataraman  discovered such things himself, when he is simply promoting himself as if he were an authoritative researcher. This marks him out as bogus. In addition to this absence of basic scholarly standards, he has a pretentious main agenda. He presumes to inform us of 1) The Cosmic origin of man.  2) Man’s Cosmic connections. 3) Man’s Cosmic responsibilities, and 4) Man’s Cosmic Destiny, no less!
These (contra-feminist) titles alone reveal that he is setting himself up as some kind of ‘spiritual mouthpiece’, misusing science as a mere tool in an attempt to inculcate religious belief – preferably  faith in his Lord and Master, Sathya Sai Baba, as the Incarnation of God Almighty in this Age.

Venkataraman, a victim of emotional blackmail?

One of the many former devotees with whom I correspond privately has commented to me that “Dr.G. Venkataraman lost all his scruples.” Also that he “had a harrowing experience when he lost his son and that is the main reason he is with Sathya Sai Baba who kind of gave him emotional support during the hard times.” Sathya Sai Baba is known to inquire of his servitors about persons coming to him, and so he is able to pretend he knows their problems and gives assurances he will take care of them etc.. But he does not even do this when he gets a massive payback in support, funds or other services… as was seen in the case of the long sufferings and inability to cure some of his staunchest supporters.

Money, Morality and Sai-worshipper Dr. Venkataraman

Venkataraman has lost all his scruples about sexual abuse allegations and murder cover-up by Sai Baba, he is comfortable with all of it! (See here!) So morality is certainly ignored in his scheme of things, at any rate. He also tells what everyone knows anyhow, how scientists made the atomic bomb and states, Overnight, scientists lost their innocence and became putty in the hands of those who had money to throw.” Well, G. Venkataraman is one of those very persons, for – like his more accomplished former colleague Dr. Bhagavantam – he worked for the Indian government on developing atomics which backed up India’s nuclear capacity! Now he is preaching against this… and he is one of the guilty!

Most Former Sathya Sai Devotees Respond Without Hatred

Posted by Barry Pittard on September 26, 2009

Former followers of Sathya Sai Baba have noticed recurring features in the notes of Sai Baba defenders who write to us. The most common, by far, is reference to his purported miracles. This tendency is evident in writers whether more sophisticated or uneducated. This despite the advice of a great many spiritual teachers (including Sathya Sai Baba) of various traditions who say not to get hung up by phenomena such as miracles.

Another common trait revealed is extreme attachment for Sathya Sai Baba’s form, which he himself has often also referred to as an obstacle to spiritual development.

As pointed out in the article  Reply To Sathya Sai Baba Defender, most former devotees – leaving aside those few who have much-to-be regretted bad manners – do not respond nastily.

Two writings that would invite the description: grace and self-restraint whilst under fire are by Timothy Conway Ph.D. and Al Rahm (both former prominent leaders in the Sathya Sai Baba movement). See:

The crucial John Hislop letters, Sathya Sai Baba, & Sathya’s defender Joe Moreno

Al Rahm’s Explanatory Letter

When those who are now former devotee were engaged in their transitional discovery process – for example, speaking to individuals and famililies with shocking accounts of abuse by Sathya Sai Baba and/or some of his core servitors – they came up with the same questions that some devotees would now aim at them. And, at an earlier stage, when unquestioning devotees, they used the same defences of Sathya Sai Baba when questions were raised by others.

Here is a quite typical note from a defender of Sathya Sai Baba, and the reply from one who is no longer partial to him. The writer had written a number of emails to the recipient, who did not retaliate to any of the points. Some of the language of the other emails was couched more unkindly than anything in the following. The former devotee responded because of the basic decency and sincerity, nontheless, of the person who wrote:

“All your articles written on your websites ( Anti-Sai Baba) seem to be an old type of fairy tales similar to what we have been seeing as a kid in our kindergarten days. The difference in presentation lies in its depth, of hate and malice. The idea of molest is a great hoax to discredit Swami, that’s for sure. When you compare Baba’s materialization of vibuthi and other manifestation as a stage show similar to what magician can do, is very puzzling. Swami’s divine manifestation of vibuthis and other religious artifacts etc;  in various part of the world is a fact. How do you answer to that? There is no need for anyone to cheat on this. It’s a world wide phenomena going on for decades. It’s not a simple paranormal activity. What about prayers? How do you answer to those prayers which Swami has responded to his devotees? How could this be possible, if not for His divine grace? Do not make sweeping allegations. Swami teaches love, not hate. Do take care”

Response (by former longtime devotee of Sathya Sai Baba, who had considerable responsibilities in his service)

“I think that I understand your harsh judgements on us and the driving of very important questions. For many former devotees have had to raise, amid great anguish, the same issues that you raise. Many of them spent years of great devotion for Sathya Sai Baba and dedicated service in the various wings of his organization. How there can be such an incredible anomaly between the uplifting experiences which you have mentioned – which many former devotees have also experienced – and the stark opposites is a very great mystery.

However, what may appear as hatred in the eyes of one devoted is not hatred. It is speaking out the facts as we have best been able to determine them.No doubt, reading such claims can be very upsetting for devotees. That is most understandable. Some have viewed it as a challenge to their own sadhana of calmness and steadfastness.

One of Sathya Sai Baba’s key teachings – and that of many spiritual teachers down the millennia, as you will be aware from your 34 years of sadhana – is to learn to distinguish the form from the formless. When we human beings become defensive about the form, does it not mean that we are very attached to it?

I notice in your prior emails that you have made much of the miracles, and yet Sathya Sai Baba, in his spoken words, has placed a very small value on them. Do not we human beings also become very attached to such manifestations, which are rupa (embodiment), as well.

Do you not think that many former devotees pray? And have lovely spiritual experiences? If we were to be motivated by hatred, do you think that I would write to you (just as other former devotees write to devotees who have written to us) with patience and respectfulness?

Many sweeping allegations, including your own, have been made about large numbers of former devotees, including, I may repeat, some who were important and much-respected leaders in the Sathya Sai Organization, who continue to be loved and respected in their various walks of life”.

Truth In Action: David and Faye Bailey Vs Sathya Sai Baba

Posted by Barry Pittard on September 24, 2009

For several months of each year, the British pianist David Bailey taught music at the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning in Puttaparthi, founded in November 1981,which became the Sri Sathya Sai University. For a number of years, Bailey was in a unique role – a westerner with extraordinary access to Sathya Sai Baba, who also assigned him to envoy duties to a number of countries, which is a role he has assigned to very few, such as Indulal Shah, V.K. Narasimhan, Dr V.K. Gokak, Dr S. Bhagavatham, Dr D.J. Gadhia, Dr Michael Goldstein, J. Jadadeesan, Professor Al Drucker.

David Bailey’s wife, Faye, prior to marrying him, had been prominent in the functions of the Sathya Sai Organization in Australia. Sathya Sai Baba arranged their marriage and officiated at their wedding.

David and Faye Bailey. Authors of 'The Findings'. An historic and lengthy indictment of Sathya Sai Baba, by two former and very close disciples

Great was their – and indeed the general – surprise at this turn of events, but they,  accepting him as their guru, complied. They are still together. However, having left him after boys from the college and also troubled devotees from around the world came to them with harrowing accounts of sexual abuse of boys and young men, and other forms of abuse, they eventually found the pressure of speaking out to be too much to bear (It is not, a small few of us note, one of the world’s magnetic attractions) . They did not, though, vacate the critical scene before having written a long document, entitled ‘The Findings’ (click on title, below).

Shortly, I intend to  blog further on the matter, referring to the account of the U.S. author and journalist, Michelle Goldberg.

For more regarding the Terry Gallagher who is mentioned in ‘The Findings’, see HERE. He was the former head of the Sathya Sai Organization, who resigned after strenuously investigating the allegations of Sathya Sai Baba’s sexual molestation of boys and young men, and confronting Sai Baba himself.

Excerpt from:

The Findings by David and Faye Bailey, U.K.

“I had to find someone who had had the same level of experience as I had.

I began to look for Terry Gallagher, an Australian whom, I heard, had been close to Swami before my time. Terry had been Central Coordinator for the Sai organisation in Australia for three years, and had been given very preferential treatment from Sai Baba for a number of years. I traced him to Kiama in New South Wales, Australia.

I knew he had left the ashram vowing never to return, and I wanted to know why? I soon found out. Terry had discovered the unmentionable inner workings of Sai Baba as I had now done. Exactly the same… but more. Terry left, never to return after the assassination attempt by ex-students in 1993. I wanted to know what Terry knew. I soon did”.

Reply To Sathya Sai Baba Defender

Posted by Barry Pittard on September 21, 2009

A former devotee received a note from one clearly upset at dissent from Sathya Sai Baba. Its mood is fairly typical of emails former followers receive. It may be noted that, apart from a minority of former Sai devotees who don’t know their manners, there is a strong commitment among Sai Baba’s leave-takers to courtesy (just as, indeed, there is among Sai devotees too). The recipient responded as follows:

“Every group, from every land, contains those who seek the ‘tinsel and trash’. I am sad to see you single out any race, such as when you specify Westerners.

Many wonderful people, who have now left him, have spent decades in Sathya Sai Baba’s service, and in the utmost devotion and service to him, including those who held very high positions in the Sathya Sai Organisation, and they have left his side.To equate them with the voices of hatred and anger and so on simply does not state the facts.

Because some persons speak out of hatred does not mean that all former devotees do so. In the same way, it would be wrong to judge genuine Sai devotees by the hatred aimed so cruelly at those who have spoken out. It is not wrong to expect that serious allegations be aired. Will truth, or Sathya, flourish in an atmosphere of suppression and the lack of accountability? It is accountability that a great many organisations in democratic countries regard as a vital practice?

There are many former devotees who have been extremely libelled and slandered, and who have refused to deal hatefully with the matter. Most remain silent, so you will not, of course, have heard of them. It is,therefore, most inappropriate to judge of those whom you do not know. Have you, as dispassionately as you best may, attempted to read through the evidence? Is automatically damning of a different point of view a healthy thing? The abundant fact is that, although Sai Baba and his officials have sealed themselves off from normal processes of enquiry, there are many evidences of great duplicity, including of the sort that comes from examining of official Sathya Sai-related documents published over many years. There are many terribly contradictory statements, and misstatements of historical fact, as well as prophecies that have clearly not come to pass.

However one may interpret the accounts of miracles, there remains the fact that many good and decent individuals and families around the world have been profoundly shattered by what has happened in regard of their young male children, as well as other shocking experiences at the ashram. That focus on the miracles can so obscure normal and healthy concern for human beings is greatly saddening. One might have thought, given that many Sai devotees know how badly these individuals and families have been affected, that compassion would have been the first of all responses”.

Susan Boyle: ‘Wild Horses’ Won’t Hold Her Back

Posted by Barry Pittard on September 15, 2009

There are, of course, more beautiful things in life than writing about Sathya Sai Baba and his movement. Duty can have its own beauty, though it is far from an absolute form of it. The exquisite and stereotype-challenging saga of Scots singer Susan Boyle affords something closer to the absolute. (And those who have come to this page who are simply interested in her can scroll down this page to the information about her).

Though the thought of my own engagement in anything significantly-other in life courts disbelief by a prominent Internet detractor and gross defamer, my work on Sathya Sai Baba constitutes but a minor part of my frequently delightful and deeply fulfilling days. Working quickly, and having other life interests, is native to a number of former followers of Sathya Sai Baba who have stood forth to call for media and government investigation of Sathya Sai Baba and certain of his core leaders.

Indeed, many former devotees, including those active in unmasking him and his powerful worldwide cult, have long had – as has  Susan Boyle (see in the two photos below) – strong responsibilities in regard to family (she dedicatedly nursed her mother for many years), cultural activity – e.g., with involvement in bringing  joy and loving company to those such as the elderly and other marginalized groups – (Susan Boyle was a member of her Church Choir and active in her small Scottish village community), and other worthy pursuits.

Belle Scots Chanteuse Susan Boyle Continues To Delight

Last April, deeply moved, as was so much of the rest of the world (she, by degrees of magnitude, broke all-time records for the number of hits on YouTube), by the Scottish singer Susan Boyle, I wrote of her in relation to having been the target of ageist discrimination not unlike, in its own way, that shown by the Sathya Sai Baba proxy defender on the Internet in relation to Robert Priddy, Brian Steel and myself. See:

After some hardships in facing her possibly even  more than meteoric rise to super stardom Susan Boyle has now re-appeared. You can hear this lovely voice and courageous personality singing ‘Wild Horses’ by clicking on Susan Boyle’s photo or the article title below, which is at the music-related website:  http://www.undercover.com.au

Susan Boyle has a makeover

Susan Boyle Covers Rolling Stones Wild Horsesby Paul Cashmere – September 14 2009

The first single from the forthcoming debut album from Susan Boyle is indeed an interesting choice. She has covered the Rolling Stones `Wild Horses`.

The original Stones version was from the 1970 ‘Sticky Fingers’ album.

Boyle has taken the Stones acoustic track and reinvented it into a haunting Tori Amoseque version.

The album will be released in November and last week outsold the new Whitney Houston album on presales alone at Amazon.com.

‘BILD’ Story. “Guru Wants Sex” (Sathya Sai Baba)

Posted by Barry Pittard on September 13, 2009

The article quoted below, in which Jens Sethi , a former devotee, recounts being sexually abused by Sathya Sai Baba, is from the magazine ‘BILD’ of Munich on 21 August, 2000. Wikipedia states that ‘BILD’ is “the best-selling newspaper in Europe and has the sixth-largest circulation worldwide”.

About a year earlier, NEXUS Magazine (Australia), August-September 1999, featured three articles on Sathya Sai Baba, containing serious allegations. One of these was the testimony of a German husband and wife, Jens and Gurprit Sethi who had been devotees, but had left him.The other articles were the testimony of Terry Gallagher (who, on principle, had resigned as head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Australia) and Hans de Kraker, also Australia, who had reported his own experiences of Sathya Sai Baba sexual abuse, and had likewise resigned his roles having further investigated allegations of Sathya Sai Baba’s serial sexual abuse of boys and young men. Kraker was, for a number of years, head of the Western Canteen at Puttaparthi, See here) . Kraker’s account can be seen at:

A searing testimonial about Sathya Sai Baba

Until the NEXUS article, mentioned below, I had dismissed for many years as absurd no fewer than nine accounts of sexual abuse by Sai Baba, five of which I had heard between 1978 and 1982, and two shortly before I read the NEXUS articles, the rest between 1997 and 2000. I must say, though, it was a relief when leading sources such as India Today, The BBC, UNESCO, The Times of London, The Telegraph, The Guardian, BT, The Age, The Australian Financial Times, Vancouver Sun, Ottawa Citizen Gatopado , UNESCO, some academic institutions such as Flinders University, Australia and others, not known for sensationalism, took our team and witnesses seriously. Even the like of these have been attacked by an unscrupulous zealot who is known to be assisted by those long and strongly associated with Sathya Sai Baba. See: Exposure of Sathya Sai Baba. BILD (Wolfgang Ranft) interview on Sathya Sai Baba

Translation of text:-

RESIDENT FROM MUNICH RAN AWAY FROM INDIA –  GURU ALL OF A SUDDEN WANTS SEX

By Wolfgang Ranft

MUNICH – Jens Sethi was young, naive, full of religious expectations. In 1988 this resident from Munich who worked that time in a printing office travelled to India the land of the Hindu Gurus. The 24-year-old man was looking for new spiritual fulfillment. He found, what he was looking for. Sethi succumbed to the fascination of a Guru who was already 62-years old that time: Sathya Sai Baba. “I was totally fascinated by the Aura of Sai Baba”, he says today. “I surrendered in a way that I was mainly concentrating on him.” Every year he travelled together with his wife for four or six weeks to the Ashram of Sai Baba. During the festival time more than 20 000 devotees gather there.

The fascination remained for Sethi just an external moment as he never could approach the Guru during the first years. This happened only in October 1996 when Sethi finally decided to go to India where he settled down in Puttaparthi close to the Ashram. During the daily pilgrim-meeting he was called for an interview by the Guru, the utmost a pilgrim can expect within the Ashram. Sethi enjoyed his good luck. He, one of those rare devotees, who has been personally selected by the Guru.

But the conversation took a different course than he expected. Sethi appeared together with his wife. The Guru was outraged and has sent the woman away. Alone in the room the old man started to kiss the man from Munich, stroke him and went into the trousers. Shocked but still full of faith and naivety Sethi accepted two other meetings some month later. Again the Guru kissed him and finally touched his genitals.

Only then the young man ran away back to Germany. It took him three years to overcome the crisis and to separate himself mentally from his spiritual guide. During that time he did investigations in the internet and came to know about other young men from UK, Sweden, USA who underwent a fate of similar experiences.

Only this summer he did the final step to escape from the spell under the Guru: He brought a charge against Sathya Sai Baba at the public prosecutor´s office in Munich – because of sexual molestation.

In its cover story on the allegations, the mass distribution, multi language edition magazine ‘India Today’ (4 December 2000) stated:

“In Australia too, The Sunday Age carried an article on Baba’s sexual abuse. In Munich, Germany, Jens Sethi, a former devotee who claims he was molested, has filed a complaint in the public prosecutor’s office. In Sweden, the central Sai group has closed down and so too has a school based on programmes devised by educationists at the Baba ashram in Puttaparthi …

JENS SETHI is a German settled in Munich. He was a Sai Baba devotee for 10 years. His charges were published for the first time by the Focus magazine on September 18.

Allegations (as sent in a signed affidavit to INDIA TODAY): “In the private chamber, Baba said ‘Come,’ and kissed me on my lips for a long time. I resisted and he gurgled, ‘Have no fear. This is a good opportunity, so many are waiting for months and will not get.’ He asked me to remove my trousers, unzipped my fly and went with his right hand into my underpants. Baba massaged the genitals unasked. He expected some erection but this did not happen for I didn’t feel any sexual excitement. I also didn’t come for such games to Puttaparthi. I was really disgusted. Baba was disappointed and had the impudence to say, ‘It is very weak, don’t waste energy.’ When I looked at him, I realised the truth about him. He had such an evil vibration that moment. Soon, he sent me out of the room without saying a word.”

STATUS: Sethi recently filed a complaint with the public prosecutor in Munich. The Sai Baba Ashram has no comment on the allegations”.

Will the Real Professor Alvin Drucker Be Upstanding?

Posted by Barry Pittard on September 9, 2009

For many years, Professor Alvin Drucker, an ex-NASA scientist, was one of those ‘star turns’ well in demand as a keynote speaker within the international Sathya Sai Organization. In the seventies, he taught at the Sathya Sai College in Whitefield during part of the same time that I taught there, and he lived within the compound that housed Sai Baba’s residence.

A common assumption was that Sai Baba had cast Drucker out because he had disobeyed his guru in marrying (or wanting to) Yaani. She is his wife to this day.

Will the Real Professor Alvin Drucker Be Upstanding?

However, we learn from reliable sources of the reason for Professor Alvin Drucker’s departing the side of Sathya Sai Baba:

Very distressed parents of young boys came to him desperate for some kind of explanation for actions bearing all the indications of Sathya Sai Baba’s sexual molestation of their sons. Al Drucker left for this reason, and got married.

Note:

(The witnesses’ details and proof of their excellent standing in their professions and communities, and of their longtime devotion, high-standing and service to Sathya Sai Baba will be shared on request with reputed media, lawfirms, scholarly investigators, etc. Barry Pittard)

One thinks of the case of a still more prominent former Sathya Sai Baba lecturer, David Bailey, and the manner in which many anguished parent came to him (and his wife, Faye). See: The Findings by David and Faye Bailey, UK. Eye-witness reports (see that of Robert Priddy below) indicate that, after a passage of years, Drucker returned to Puttaparthi. Those who argue badly, ignoring psychological complexities such as the in-denial state of mind, like simple-mindedly to state that Drucker has come “back to Swami” so what are critics of Sathya Sai Baba on about. Let him speak for himself. But will he? Do those grief-stricken parents who came to him mean nothing to him any more?

There is no doubting the excellent standing of a number informants with whom Drucker has shared this information, and who have written to us over time. They would make excellent witnesses in a court of law or if interviewed by media or scholarly investigators.

Naturally, it would be of benefit were Drucker himself to make a clear statement. Or is he content to stand by while those who have done their best, against many and formidable obstacles, to bring out the truth are execrated as liars, spreading stories for money (Sathya Sai Baba has said), hallucinating (Dr John Hislop) , disgruntled, hateful apostates, and so forth.

One may add that Drucker has often written and spoken on the Vedas. Where, then, is his fearlessness? It is a notion that resounds through the Vedas.

See former head of the Norwegian Sathya Sai Organization Robert Priddy’s journal entry of which he refers as:

“Directly recorded notes from my long Brindavan stay 1994 – about V.K. Narasimhan and Al Drucker (scanned from 1994 notebook)”
V.K. Narasimhan on Sai colleges etc. Transcript:

SUNDAY 27/3/94 (Bhajan all day)
Afternoon darshan: Sat in chair at back. He came down to the last block and looked in my direction – but did not fixate gaze on me. [Same way?]
I had back problems again.

Comment: Once I had thought that Sai Baba had helped cure my spinal misalignment problems – caused by several falls from childhood onwards – especially though a dream. I later realised, when the problems returned and got worse, that it had just been some temporary placebo effect.

After darshan I was hi-jacked to the Warden’s room at the college by Narasimhan. He did not want to use my last chapter for Sanathana – he considered my view of the Organisation to be too positive.

Comment: Narasimhan had already occasionally expresses scepticism about the claims by leaders in the Sai Organization and he had suffered problems from Sai Baba because he had published things in the journal Sanathana Sarathi by a Central Coordinator which were intended to mislead him (about copyright), resulting in him being suspended as editor for a long period. VKN was particularly cynical about Antonio Craxi (brother of the then Italian PM B. Craxi – later convicted of embezzlements) because of his Mafia connections and his vile attacks on other leaders in Italy, like Marena who eventually replaced Craxi.

But he did not say why – just went on in his usual way, recounting life experiences at kibbutzim, in Massachusetts and so on and soon the Warden gave us Sai prasadam – and another (lecturer in English lit.) gave us a second lot – so I had for both Reidun and I. It was Mysore pak.

It turned out I had deserted Reidun – should have met her after darshan to visit Robert and Rita!! But I thought it was after dinner!
Heard about Al Drucker: he is literally excommunicated – can’t enter any of the ashrams or go to Sai centres in the US. It is because he married a young girl against Swami’s expressed wish. The girl was refused at the ashram when her identity was found out. But she later got Baba to take a letter (presumably by staying incognito somehow to the ashram staff). She is not allowed in, ever!! Swami once said to Drucker that he could not have realisation because he would first have to lose everything. Drucker said he wanted it anyhow. Who knows? Or perhaps he broke faith with Sai

Comment: Alvin Drucker was a long-term (US) resident at the ashrams and very active promoter of Sathya Sai Baba. I had seen briefly one day previously, and the news came via Reidun after a long talk she had with an American lady devotee who had recently come from the interview where Sai Baba had seen both Drucker and his new wife at the interview (possibly they had not yet actually married). Sai Baba He had warned Al that he would cut him off and had told Yaani that Al was dying of stomach cancer and he was far too old for her etc. (Yaani was later brutally raped on Shivartri night before a shrine to Sai Baba and who wrote and lectured about it, demonstrating her state of total psychological denial – see here, and here)

Transcript (black text) and comments (violet text):-

6/10/98 Changed room from B2 to B4, which Anne-Irene vacated before darsan. Missed darsan again therefore. New room cooler and various advantages. (Comment: However, this North block for Organization donors was daily enveloped for hours in a vomit-ghastly putrid smell of rotting faeces from an open sewage pit nearby which should have been replaced by an ecological system – but the officials stole the money given for the purpose! See the facts about this scam here)
Saw Narasimhan briefly – I wouldn’t stay. He was writing the preface for ‘From Bapu to Baba’ 3rd ed. His eye is very poor – but he may get a lease of new eyesight from glasses designed by an English specialist soon. (Comment: Battling on as editor of Sai’s journal at his command, VKN had taken an eye operation on Sai Baba’s advice and lost the eye as a result, despite vibuti applied by Baba after the op. See here.)
We saw a bearded Al Drucker when we came from darsan. He seemed not to have been to it. (Comment: Since Alvin Drucker was banned from th ashram by Sai baba personally in 1992 see here, he had not been seen at any Organization conferences either. He attended the ‘paduka’ (sandal) ceremonies but hid away from everyone the rest of the time. The beard seemed to be a disguise)
Saw Henk and exchanged a greeting. Wrote rest of letter to Ragnhild …. etc…

7/10/89 At benches by 6.19 Shenai and drum music. Still a few places. We were awoken at 5.30 by Oms and Suprabhatam just outside our window at full force. Then music, chanting, more trumpet and drum music etc. Also a dose of unstoppable feedback from the microphones, despite repeated late night “Testing, testing, one, two”‘s
Went with Narasimhan in car, driven by his relative (brother’s son-in-law) who organised the entire Rayalaseema Water Project (he had come from the USA). (He had secured a copy of my book from the US too). N. and I had a chat about Sai Books and my book. He has told Devendra that my book would be a runaway success, so no problem with an edition there. The index he feels best in data form. (see about Suri’s misappropriations here)
Suri was removed on a good “pretext” by Swami – a book he published caused Swami’s ire … some Ma who claimed that she embraces Sai as a mother etc. N. said Suri is a rogue who still pretends he is in grace, sitting on the verandah. His wife, however, is a devoted server – as are her parents.
Damodar Rao is in B’lore & very ill. Hans is with him. Srinivas Rajendra is going strong and lecturing.

(Comment:Damodar Rao was an old follower of Sai Baba – a retired circuit judge – who visited the US once and told me his story at great length. He told me that he thought sexual abusers of children “should all be boiled alive in oil”!! A very extremist viewpoint for a judge? But perhaps not in India? This subject came up without reference to Sai Baba, who neither of us suspected (then). Hans was Hans Baerholm, a Danish follower i knew well too, who was living in Rao’s house in Bangalore.)

Note: Yaani and Al Drucker have publicly subscribed to the notion that Yaani – in her brutal rape in a Sai center – was never raped. It was only her body that was raped. The lack of careful distinction between a philosophical of spiritual vantage-point is evident here, and the case is suggestive of the dangers of extrapolating a concept and servicing a psychological denial of events that need formal professional counseling. It is a view that too well lends itself to false notions of forgiveness, and to actually aiding criminals. It must, however, be said that the rapist in this event was convicted on Jaani Drucker’s evidence. What I refer to is the importance in ensuring that auditors to accounts like this do not go away harbouring – in an air of unreality – interpretations that endanger psychological health and social responsibility.

“What about the miracles”? Response To One Drawn By Sathya Sai Baba

Posted by Barry Pittard on September 6, 2009

Sometimes, a clearly decent and civil email comes from those not in agreement with one’s stance. Offensive mails seem to be the lot of those who, no matter how civilly, speak out asking for proper investigation into the worldwide allegations against Sathya Sai Baba.  One is happy to respond to polite queries, and to save one’s precious energy by not responding to those who are rude. Interesting, by the way, is how the genuine-sounding emails typically – unlike quite a few of those which strike one as having an agenda to draw one into reaction – contain a genuine email ID.

Recently, a writer, who had witnessed inexplicable phenomena occurring at a Sai devotee venue, asked me:  what about the (Sathya Sai Baba-related) miracles that are happening around the world? I responded in terms close to the following. I shall now include some relevant links:

The question is fair. It is one that many who have left Sathya Sai Baba have pondered over. I have not seen any satisfactory explanation. Typically, there is a quality of manifestation that cannot be explained. In my view, these phenomena are far removed from phenomena of the Ouija Board type, what to mention many another variety studied by parapsychologists.

I think that neither devotee nor non-devotee explanations can do justice to phenomena about which, in the scientific, rational sense, we can say very little. There is that arresting statement in the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein’s ‘Tractatus’: “Whereof we cannot speak, thereof we must be silent”.

Yes, the cry by some that there is trickery in many homes and other places where these phenomena occur is mistaken. There are too many householders etc., and the many who know them, of decades, of known integrity for this to be correct. I have had, over the years, my own experiences in such homes (in three of which, in markedly different places, I dwelt for some time).  However, from the point of view of those who have either suffered directly from or else carefully investigated Sathya Sai Baba’s abuses, there are two markedly different situations:  one of them delightful – the manifestations, experienced by a number of us; but the other terrible indeed. There is the joyful. There is the terrible.

The happy faces of those as they experience such phenomena is very different to the pain in the whole demeanor of those individuals and families who have suffered at the hands of Sathya Sai Baba and, in some cases, of those close to him, including in his educational wing. Those who have suffered – in regard to sexual abuse of boys and young men AND in other ways – feel very differently to those who undergo the delights of feeling their faith affirmed by the presence of honey and ash coming out of the pictures, and other sorts of phenomena. In any event, when it comes to Sathya Sai Baba’s own apparent physical performance of miracles, the truthful enquirer may have to watch video footage from various sources, including the BBC, without side-stepping. See my article:

Right Hand. Sleight Hand. Watch Sai Baba Cheat With Sacred Ash (Film clip)

The fact is that individuals and families from many parts of the world have been shattered. Sathya Sai Baba and his ashram authorities, further assisted by successive Indian governments, have initiated extreme cover up:

New Zealand Lawyer Exposes Official Cover Up of Killings In Sathya Sai Baba Bedroom

Indulal Shah and Indian Government Cover Up

V.P.B. Nair, B.Premanand, Robert Priddy: Sai Baba Bedroom Killings

Facts about murders, huge ashram financial ashram scams, as well as the widespread, serial sexual abuse of boys and young men have been profoundly suppressed. To these more obviously shocking facts, one must also consider the many contradictions and anomalies that have been uncovered by close examination of the Sathya Sai literary canon. One thinks especially of the work of Brian Steel and Robert Priddy.  See, e.g.,:

Recent Research on the Claims of Sathya Sai Baba (B.D. Steel website)

Sathya Sai Baba Deceptions Exposed (R.C. Priddy blogsite)

Sathya Sai Baba In Word And Action (R.C. Priddy’s extensive website)

Any truthful, consecutive thinking needs to consider the importance of this type of critical work. Those who continue to speak out are motivated by very old-time personal, ethical habits of speaking the truth irrespective of the attacks that come. Many who have left his side are very far from the manner in which he and various devotees would depict us. It is simply not true that we are liars, disgruntled, dissenting for the sake of money, and so on. He and his core leaders know it too well.

We have come to see the twistings and procrustean stretchings of what we have stated, by certain pro SSB activists. What is more, certain key officials know very well the terrible facts. There is also the appalling lapse of memory by those we long knew as co-workers and loving friends. It is good that my correspondent is “still continuing reading”. This is exactly what, typically, the devotees would not do, and are told not to do by Sathya Sai Baba himself in regard to our material on the Internet and elsewhere. He says to question, and yet heads a very autocratic worldwide organization. He says it is THE divine institution on earth, through which the whole world will be saved from its greatest perils ever to confront it, and this mostly within his own lifetime. Yet so many of his promises and predictions have failed, as can be seen by a great deal of proper documentation from official Sathya Sai publications of discourses (See Further Reading, below).

I may add that there have been those such as Buddha, Ramakrishna and many other spiritual teachers who have been very specific about the obstacle to the spiritual path that is posed by the mind’s attention to miracles.
