U.S. Psychologist Shirley Pike’s Moving Challenge To Sathya Sai Baba and His Organization

The Sathya Sai Organization faces yet more resignations, and also departure of those who leave without formally resigning.  International coordinators such as Robert Priddy and myself (see sidebar at bottom right hand side of this page) are always happy to provide, from a wide database, contact details of those who have left and are willing to be contacted, and who reside in an area as close as possible to that of any enquirer. We have professional protocols to ensure that those who contact us are genuine. For individuals and families who have faced sore difficulties, we can also refer to very qualified, experienced professional counselers.

People from many professions, trades and cultures have left Sathya Sai Baba, and down the years, have continued to show the same attitudes of service in their communities as they did when followers of Sathya Sai Baba. One of these is the child psychologist Shirley Pike (Ex-President, North Central Region: Ex-President Cedar Rapids Center, Iowa  USA). She is a nationally Certified School Psychologist and has a specialist Master’s Degree (with forty five graduate units beyond the typical Master’s Degree). She works with children who have severe emotional and behavioural concerns, many of whom have been sexually and otherwise abused.

The way Shirley Pike has held to conscience and professional responsibity is a model that many in the Sathya Sai Organization need to practise. Their dereliction of the duty of care, and the manner in which they have shunned, and allowed to be execrated, those whom they loved and honoured down many years is a truly appalling fact not faced by this supposedly caring organization. 

No credible professional can remain silent when the most serious allegations keep on coming year after year, decade after decade.  Shirley Pike not only spoke out while still in the Sathya Sai Organization – she has proved of great support to other dissenting voices, and has given courage to those whose lives were shattered by the revelations of the dark side of Sathya Sai Baba and his core servitors. In the face of almost unimaginable libel, defamation and unrelenting attack, she, and others, have striven with much personal sacrifice to live those qualities of truthfulness, right conduct, peace and love that Sathya Sai Baba and many of his devotees have most dreadfully failed to embody.

One week ago, I resigned as president of the North Central Region, giving verbal notification to the National Coordinator, William Harvey, Ph.D. Serving the North Central Region’s centers, study groups, and individual devotees has been one of the most joyful and fulfilling experiences of my life. Never have I had the privilege of knowing so many wonderful, loving, giving, and spiritually dedicated people. I thank all of you for your gracious and kind support of me as we worked together for our spiritual growth and development. The reason for my resignation will probably dismay and shock many of you. A few weeks ago I received information from a fellow long-time devotee of an e-mail she had received concerning acts of pedophilia by Sathya Sai Baba. I had the e-mail forwarded to me and I personally investigated the information contained in that e-mail. I spoke personally to various individuals who had first hand experience with inappropriate behavior by Sai Baba. These individuals are respectable, credible, intelligent and have no axes to grind of any sort. I came away from these conversations believing these individuals and have therefore resigned and am sending you this letter. I am in the midst of a personal grieving process, involving all the typical stages of grief, including shock, denial, bargaining, profound sadness, despair, and acceptance. I am grieving because I believe that Sathya Sai Baba is a charlatan, who has used the power gained by the love and reverence of his followers and the truth of ancient Vedic Doctrines and Scriptures to sexually molest boys and young men from about the ages of eight to thirty. It is these allegations of unspeakable, abhorrent sexual molestation that force me to write this letter to you. I have personally investigated these allegations and spoken with several people who have either had direct personal sexual experiences or who know someone very well, i.e. an immediate family member, who has been abused. Two of these individuals are former regional officers, who have resigned their posts and whom I have known for many years. I trust them, know them to have exemplary character and believe they would not lie. Further, they have nothing to gain and everything to lose by coming forward with their experiences. These experiences include numerous accounts of Sai Baba rubbing male genitals with oil, mutual masturbation, mutual oral sexual gratification, and even anal intercourse by Sai Baba. As a child psychologist who is familiar with the emotional devastation that sexual abuse causes its victims and the classic patterns of abuse, I found these accounts and the individuals’ reactions, to my horror, highly credible. As a school psychologist, I am a mandatory reporter. This means that under Iowa law I am required to report any allegation or well founded suspicion to the authorities. If Sai Baba were a mere trickster fleecing people for their money, I would prefer to go quietly into the night, preserve my friendships with devotees, and not disrupt the faith of others. But, as an officer who has promoted Sathya Sai Baba as an avatar, I have both a moral and a legal obligation to warn all of the members and officers in this region and the national leaders that any male between approximately the ages of eight and thirty is potentially at risk for sexual molestation should they go to India to see Sathya Sai Baba and have a private interview. I do not expect anyone to take what I am saying at face value. Avatar of Deception: Sathya Sai Baba. 85, But Says He Will Rule World

As the international Sathya Sai Organization knows to its immense cost (both financially and morally), many, including foremost leaders, have left, having been able to analyse for themselves the many and terrible distortions of fact that Sathya Sai Baba and his core servitors have generated. 

Many shockingly suffering individuals and families around the world have needed to perform no analysis at all, since they have been prime victims of Sathya Sai Baba’s and his officials’ grave misconduct.

For those still in the throes of leaving the Sai cult, it is a time of profound emotional, intellectual and social upheaval. These afflictions cannot be expected to go away quickly. Those of us who have stuck at the job of exposure commonly find that leave-takers of the organization take a year or two, and sometimes much longer, to collect their thoughts in a consecutive way. Those who make a quick matter of transition to replacement life styles often say that they have ‘moved on’. There is a whole psychological literature that would suggest they have not, and that, in fact, by not looking carefully at what has happened in their lives, they have gone into an mental and emotional denial state. Some simply go from one cult into another or back to some ‘safe’ conservative haven, and then come to grief yet again, and wonder why.

Those who, however, wish to reflect on their experience, and look at some key themes that are under question, may find useful a detailed focused article such as ‘The Sathya Sai Organisation’s Deception and Propaganda Exposed’. The authors are Robert Priddy, co-founder and former head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Norway, and myself, Barry Pittard, former lecturer at Sathya Sai Baba’s Whitefield College (via Bangalore, South India). This four-part article quotes liberally from Dr G.Venkataraman, deputy chairman of the international Sathya Sai Organization, and director of Sathya Sai Baba’s international radio propaganda service, ‘Sai Global Harmony’.

The foes of the ‘open society’ (Sir Karl Popper’s term) are those who use its very openness to achieve their closed and devious ends. Sai Baba and his highly authoritarian and cultist organisation have such ends, which critics have tried to make known. Its foremost leaders silence all those who question it  – and never face substantive criticisms. For the first time – after six years of pained and guilty silence – since hundreds of long-term devotees left it in disgust – the Sathya Sai Organisation has found it necessary to try to defuse the debate about Sathya Sai Baba’s alleged crimes, deceits and fraudulence. Despite Sai Baba and his worldwide organisation’s constant claims to be extremely frugal with money, their extravagant promotions belie the truth of their claims. There are wasteful projects galore 2. For example, there are museums and other lavish buildings simply to glorify Sai Baba himself. See for yourself here 3. What Venkataraman cannot contemplate is that Sai Baba overestimated how much he could spend!

Leading media and other organizations such as UNESCO and the U.S. State Department have been very stringent in their expectations of sound evidence from organised former devotees around the world. Those who have researched the worldwide allegations against Sathya Sai Baba include the BBC, DR (Denmark), ATUL (Argentina), SBS (Australia), ABC (Australia), and print media in India, the UK, Europe, Scandinavia, Canada, Australia etc. They quickly discovered for themselves the dishonesty and elusiveness of Sai Baba and his leaders. For example, this was why the BBC’s legal department permitted its ‘The Secret Swami’ team to clandestinely film DR Michael Goldstein, allowing millions in many countries to see him show no respect for the accountability and transparency that citizens and responsible organizations today expect. They also saw Goldstein act nastily 4 in a way that is the very antithesis of a spiritual leader.

It suits Venkataraman – who refers to Goldstein as “Brother” to suppress this telling aspect, as he also does with other self-damning statements by Sai Baba and Isaac Tigrett in ‘The Secret Swami‘ 5. The BBC interviewer Tanya Datta says to Tigrett “But even if it was proven to you that Sai Baba was a paedophile and a serial sex abuser, you’re saying it wouldn’t change the fact that he is your guru”. Tigrett replies, “Absolutely not. Absolutely not. He could go out and murder someone tomorrow…”

“High standards” would include acknowledging a fact of great ethical and moral importance. This is that many honourable devotees once in high standing in the Sathya Sai Organisation have done their best to see that those making the allegations are properly and fairly heard. Those who have investigated and spoken out include those who held prominent roles, such as Rick Raines, Richard Nelson, Al Rahm, Shirley Pike, Ella Evers, Dr. Timothy Conway, Glen Meloy, Serguei Badaev, Dave Lyons, William Lo, Hariram Jayaram, Terry Gallagher, Stephen Carthew, David Bailey, Britt-Marie Anden, Conny Larsson etc.

In the absence of proper and, these days, typical standards of organisational openness and accountability, there has been a large and principled exodus from the Sathya Sai Organization. Why do Goldstein, Venkataraman and the other key leaders conceal this from their congregations, and those political or religious leaders and the wider public they try so hard to cultivate and fetch to their keynote events?

It is not surprising, then, that the unaccountable ashram authorities and International Chairman met their match when they ejected the BBC for asking reasonable questions after filming there. The result was a worldwide exposure of the cultist nature of it all. Every major British newspaper reviewed the documentary as being well-balanced and revealing journalism! 6

This ailing man, Sathya Sai Baba, has recently said that he will soon travel to other countries. He has also said that soon he will be ruling the world. 

 Sathya Sai Baba has said:

“In the days ahead, the whole world will be obliged to come to Prashanthi Nilayam” (p. 320 Sanathana Sarathi December 1991)

“The whole world will be transformed into Sathya Sai Organisation and Sathya Sai will be installed in the hearts of one and all”.  p. 16 Sanathana Sarathi January 1999)

“In Argentina (Sathya Sai Baba) bhajans are being held in every home [cheers].”  Sathya Sai Speaks, XXIII, 29:255 – 20-10-1990, on the alleged 50th anniversary of Sathya Sai Baba’s so-called ‘Declaration’ of his so-called ‘Reality’ as Avatar of all Avatars.)

Here is a simple test:  Ask any Argentinian whether this statement is true. If it is not, ergo – this Sathya is not telling the truth or is credulous and badly misinformed! But, then, how can this be so?  For he has long said that he is All-knowing and All-seeing ….

Sick and Ailing Sathya Sai Baba 85. His Promises to Look Young Have Failed

That age has its physical and mental ravages is not the point here.  Who is not privy to these? …. To which Shakespeare’s Hamlet refers in his famous soliloquy – … “The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to.”  The only point here is that Sathya Sai Baba has made demonstrably unreal and false statements in regard to prophecies about his own physical state.

At his 60th birthday, Sathya Sai Baba foretold that he would not physically age. But now look! And compare the various older photos with those only of the last days.

The newspaper Eenadu is the largest circulated Telugu newspaper in Andhra Pradesh (the State where Sathya Sai Baba lives), and claims a daily readership of over 10 million. (See my article: Sathya Sai Baba’s Slurred Speech Due To Old Age. ‘Eenadu’ News Report). Eenadu reported at the time of the last birthday:

“Lacking in Clarity: There was a lack of clarity in Satya Sai’s speech because of his old age. The interpreter struggled much to translate his speech into English. Satya Sai was seated in a special wheel chair which was brought very close to the car, so he could very slowly get into it. At the time of the speech, he stood up with great difficulty with the help of his assistants”.

Though, with what absurd self-deception, he has said:

“The attributes of the Avatars are beyond human comprehension…. Rama and Krishna were ever youthful. Have you ever seen a picture of Rama or Krishna with grey hair?….. Usually old people have wrinkles on their faces … I do not have any signs of old age. (loud applause). There is not a single wrinkle on My face”. Sanathana Sarathi October, 2002

“I do not suffer from any kind of disease because there is no trace of greed in Me. That is why I am always healthy…” Sanathana Sarathi September 2001, page 257f, 186

“Many people wonder that I look so young even at the age of 73. The reason is that I have the three P’s in Me. One is Purity, the second is Patience and the third is Perseverance. It is because of these three that I shall remain like this for any number of years to come. (cheers)” p. 302 Sanathana Sarathi, 11-1998

“Purity, patience and perseverance. With these three you are bound to acquire good health and bliss. You may believe it or not. But the truth is that these three are responsible for my health (Arogya) and bliss (Ananda)” (Sanathana Sarathi July 1995, p. 173)

60th Birthday Promise Of Not Physically Ageing – Falsified!

Our reports from Puttaparthi from reliable sources include that he has bouts that disclose mental difficulties.

In his public discourse March 13, 2002, he told thousands that his divine magnetism holds him to the ground, impeding his feet and hand movements:

“So when I put My foot down, the whole foot stuck to the ground. It is a little hard to lift a foot that is stuck. Wherever I walk, it sticks there. Whatever is held, it sticks to My (sic) hand. This magnet is not in everyone like this. This magnet is so powerful only in Divinity.”

Former co-founder and leader of the Norwegian Sathya Sai Organization, Robert Priddy has written:

“In 1998 V.K. Narasimhan (editor of Sanathana Sarathi) told me that Sathya Sai Baba had told him definitively that he had not had his hair cut for 20 years! However, photos taken of Sathya Sai Baba through that period show clearly that (around 1993/4?) his hair was suddenly seen to be about 1/3 or less of the volume it normally had. Then it slowly grew out again. I was present at the ashram at that time and observed this closer crop of his hair. So Sathya Sai Baba can tell his followers anything he likes, whether true or not, accurate or not, and get away with it! There have been any number of photos showing Sathya Sai Baba before and after a haircut (though this fact is never mentioned by devotees, of course. The condition of his thinning hair in 2010 is shown here. Even from these photos, all taken within a few years after 2004, one can see that his hair has been trimmed, fashioned etc. It is claimed too by Indian skeptics that he dyes his hair to keep it black, as he once predicted it would always be, and that he suffers from a bad skin condition as a result”.

In Februry 2007, I made a note:  “the Australian scholar Brian Steel’s remark of February 2002 seems almost prescient:

‘Since the ‘discrepancies’ appear to be increasing nowadays, is there any possibility that Sai Baba is suffering from a degenerative ageing disease which might have an effect on his thinking and speaking?’

Likewise, in October 2002, a Swedish psychologist and former devotee, Åsa Samsioe, noting physical signs of Sai Baba’s ageing like his development of a ’turkey throat’ and also the “low intellectual level” of his discourses, remarked:

‘He must have one heck of a job, Sathya Sai Baba… it can’t be easy to age in his situation, besides being under so much criticism as he has recently been… not surprising that it leaves its marks. Occasionally I think ‘poor man’… feel some pity for him. A whole life built on lies… captured by the myth about himself… to be the object of the projections of millions… and to be forced , at least outwardly, to live up to all the expectations put to him… to always have to have all those people around him’. http://home.no.net/anir/Sai/enigma/Swede4.htm

It is just under a decade since Sai Baba informed devotees all round the world that his aircraft is about to take off to bring his mission to the whole world. But the runway, like his own imagination, would seem to have run away on him. He turned 81 last November (though evidence indicates that he has falsified his actual birthdate by three years). Here, in his own words, in almost in full flight, is yet another of his myriad failed predictions:

‘Swami’s mission has made this turn to face the runway. The 70th birthday was the signal from the tower to accelerate. In the 75th birthday, the airplane will leave the ground’.

Sewage treatment is in shambles though civic authorities renovated it with Rs 1 crore last year. Residents are concerned as unhygienic conditions prevail at the municipal compost yard.

The government assured that it would provide boating facilities for devotees in Enumulapalli tank, but this has not materialised yet.

It is to be hoped that concerned families, friends and colleagues of Sathya Sai Baba devotees will make use of the list below – although the numbers of those who have left have grown greatly since someone took the trouble to compile this one.

The list can be shown to devotees whose Sai cult leaders have taken measures to depict as a “handful of disgruntled individuals” those former followers who have left Sathya Sai Baba for acute moral and spiritual reasons. The undying truth is that there are former followers from many countries, professions, trades and backgrounds who have made considerable sacrifices to bring the facts about Sathya Sai Baba and his core servitors into public view. They have been prey to the utmost distortion. They have been reviled, libeled, defamed and shunned.

It is important to understand that the list of names here represents only those who have spoken out about their disillusionment. This number is like the proverbial tip of the iceberg  (or less)… for in three countries I know well, less than 5% of those who have left the Organization have made known the fact to the public.

This list of apostates has been compiled from e-mails received , public postings of resignation letters and other such documents, including signatories of the Sai Petition (see here). How can those of them who have so cruelly rejected their once dearly beloved fellow devotees, whom they knew over decades to be good and decent human beings, proclaim that they are, as Sai worshipers, devotees of Truth, Love and Right Action? Sathya Sai Baba’s Gross Exaggerations of Puttaparthi Crowd Numbers

Robert Priddy (he for much longer) and I can fairly claim a friendship with the late V.K. Narasimhan, who had been, before he retired to Puttaparthi, the legendary and courageous editor of a number of India’s top newspapers, such as ‘The Hindu’ and ‘The Indian Express’ and ‘The Deccan Herald’. We would regularly sit together in his humble quarters at Puttaparthi, and he also received me as a guest in the family home in Chennai. Not long before VKN died, he instructed the hospital staff to allow me, even though considerable restrictions had been placed on visitation rights, to visit him at the Sathya Sai Superspeciality Hospital at Puttaparthi. I had been editing his book on the great French Jesuit philosopher and palaeontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.

I had seen a Priddy note in which he took to task a Sai Baba apologist who typified those many followers who reveal deep and repeated flaws of reasoning that are simply not acceptable in any proper discussion. He wrote to the individual: “I also know that there have never been “millions of foreigners” visiting him, though he has made such claims. The 70th birthday, which I attended, registered less than 40,000 foreign visitors from the entire world”

I have just asked Robert Priddy to send me a note from his writings that precisely record his observations on Sathya Sai Baba proneness to extraordinary exaggeration of crowd numbers. It reads:

“The ex-editor-in-chief of ‘Sanathana Sarathi’, V.K. Narasimhan (VKN), was a truth-seeker both of worldly facts and spiritual insight, with a critical sense and high standards, certainly not given to naive judgements, hasty conclusions, or exaggerated reports. As I got to know him in various situations, I came to regard his perceptions as very largely credible, not least because – despite all the good sense in many of SB’s activities, he always harboured doubts about SB’s more extravagant assertions. Though he seldom mentioned it in public, it was he who pointed out to me that SB repeatedly exaggerates figures wildly.On the 70th birthday SB had predicted that there would be 3 to 4 million visitors, said VKN beforehand. The ashram engineer, Mr. Ashoka, told a Norwegian engineer (whom I knew well and who was planning an ashram water project) that he calculated that, at any one time, the entire accommodation facilities of the ashram and Puttaparthi in (1995) were less than 50,000 persons. About 250,000 maximum can occupy the Hillview Stadium, where the entire crowd was present at the main ceremony. The ashram was as empty. Even when largish areas with tents and outside camps are accounted for, the figure of 500,000 persons is reckoned to be much greater than had been present in the area on the Birthday. An American friend, Robert Bruce, whom I have known for years, was told by SB in a brief interview after the celebrations that there had been 3 million persons present! Others reported similar statements by SB. (Some, unable to make SB’s figures add up, argued that – “since Swami is never wrong” – this perhaps was intended to include disembodied souls visiting God!). To this, VKN replied, “Swami always multiplies these numbers by ten.” He was well placed to know, if anyone was! In the preceding year to the 1995 birthday bonanza, SB had told one interview group that there would be 7,000 Japanese there, but in fact the registered number was 75! A group from New Zealand led by a foremost Sai foundational leader, Mr. Arthur Hillcoat, were informed by SB that he wanted 5,000 service workers from their country present in 1996 at the Birthday. (I then heard Mr. Hillcoat also tell that SB told them that radiation pollution from French nuclear tests would cause great havoc, ecological destruction and deaths in New Zealand. and other places thousands of miles distant. This has evidently not occurred as far can be judged). But at the 70th birthday, the biggest foreign contingent, however, came from the USA – 750 persons in all. The ashram accommodation office, which handles the passports of every foreign visitor, stated after the birthday event that there were at total of 8,000 delegates from 137 countries. This was the total number of foreign visitors registered at the ashram, whether believer or not: all were freely given the status of ‘delegates’, even mere tourists and inquisitive sceptics… my wife and I had to share a room with a couple, one of whom had never even had been to darshan once! This exaggeration is but one instance among many others. The figure of 3 million visitors was frequently repeated, because it came from Sai Baba himself both before and after the event (from reliable friends whom he told this in interviews). Yet estimated on a technical basis by the ashram engineer, Mr. Ashoka, no more than a maximum of 300,000 were present in the area at any one time, a fact also verified by calculating the size of the Hillview Stadium, which was not even entirely full even at the main opening ceremony, as photos show. This was no isolated case of such multiplication by SB, for VKN told me all important birthday attendance figures had been hugely overblown. He reckoned as an absolute maximum 400,000 at the 60th birthday, when millions were also said to have been present, but the engineer’s estimates made even this far too many”.

Many Contradictions In Sathya Sai Baba Official Literature

Worldwide, when deeply concerned people in very large numbers left Sathya Sai Baba – commencing circa 2000 – one of their most typical and prompt responses was to get rid of all the paraphernalia that belonged to devotion to this guru. This meant:  the books, the official newsletter, Sanathana Sarathi,  the photos, rings, pendants, robes, and so on, which would otherwise bring back memories far more painful than joyful.

Fortunately, since the books and publications such as Sanathana Sarathi, individuals of scholarly mind, such as Robert Priddy,  Brian Steel and Alexandra Nagel, realised the importance of preserving documentation. These now prove to be most revelatory in self-damaging ways that could never have been the intention of Sathya Sai Baba and his cult leaders.

Robert Priddy was a contributor to Sanathana Sarathi, and much respected by its editor, the renowned (retired to Puttaparthi) Indian newspaper editor, V.K. Narasimhan (See photo). For those who like to delve into archives, here are Priddy’s articles from that widely-distributed publication. They state positions very different to what he has taken, as a major dissenter, in the last decade. Priddy was co-founder and longtime head of the Sathya Sai Organization of Norway.

 Recent Robert Priddy blogs have made effective use of Sanathana Sarathi. If there were ever to be a law case in which facts and myths could be separated from each other, this newsletter, which goes worldwide to devotees, would be of substantive value as stark  testimony. Unless India were to be delivered from the dire corruption which afflicts that in so many other ways magnificent nation, such a recourse is quite out of the question. In the meantime, such Priddy articles excellently show the dichotomy between Sathya Sai Baba’s officially recorded words, and his actions as we know them to be.

It is not that official Sai editors have not tried, since the glaring spotlight thrown on the cult by critical and competent minds, and the exposure in leading worldwide media, to expunge terrible indicting references from the literature emanating from Sai publishing venues. ‘Everyone’ loves Me’ says Sathya Sai Baba, everyone will visit

Robert Priddy comments:

“If one looks at any website which collects news items from the world, one will not find the name of Sathya Sai Baba there, (unless it is an Indian subcontinent news collection). Sai Baba’s usual pretense that the “whole world” knows about him, repeated yet again in the August discourse, is a directly laughable claim which would suggest how little he knows of the real world!

Despite his life-long afro-frizz and glaring orange robe and many other ways of attracting attention to himself, he is very far from being as oft-mentioned or anything like as recognisable as world-famous people are… such as Queen Elisabeth, the Dalai Lama, Bishop Tutu, Nelson Mandela, or countless presidents and prime ministers  and he can’t even measure his fame against top sportsmen like David Beckham & Tiger Woods, or an entire compendium of stage and screen stars! Does he actually imagine that 1.4 million Chinese have even heard of him, or most of the world’s 2 billion Christians, 1 billion Muslims, not to detail countless others who care nothing for an Indian swami? If so, he is completely out of touch in an ‘eternal omnipresent’ sphere of his own intense imagining”.

Robert Priddy comments:

“Any near-exact estimate of the entire Sai holdings is impossible to make due to the extremely secretive Sathya Sai Central Trust and other funds over which he has control , but $10 billion would probably be a conservative guess. Calculating on the basis of membership figures and other estimates touted by the Sathya Sai Organisation, another source put the figure at $45 billion sometime after 2000. Since reliable information on everything about the Sai empire is never declared fully and their accounts are protected by the government, including the secrets of the many sources from which donations come (testimonies of deceased devotees, often their entire estates – such as the fortune of the famous film star James Mason, for one. A close relative of a friend of mine was induced to part with £1/4 million in her last will and testament to the Sathya Sai Central Trust when  Sai devotees – having already extracted tens of thousands of pounds from her for projects which never materialized – further concentrated on ‘love-bombing’ her in her aged frailty, giving her false hopes of salvation and so on”.

No accounts are available to anyone – other than undocumented annual gross sum statements by the authorities, who are often under Sai Baba’s influential thumb – as is well known to insiders -) The Sathya Sai Trust is exempt from taxation, and special freedom from import duties have been granted by his governmental followers. One certainly wonders where it all goes, apart from the opulent luxuries like charter jets, extravagant buildings, apartments and frequent costly festivals and huge ‘birthday bashes’!”

Sathya Sai Baba prophecies on his own death date(s)

Priddy relates:

“Sathya Narayana Raju (later Sathya Sai Baba) is reported by several devotee writers as having said he will die at the age 95 and/or 96 (in some places in India a person who is 95, yet is in-the 96th year, is said to be 96 years old.) On various occasions Baba has reportedly said in private that his life would last 96 years [eg by S. Balu, ‘Living Divinity’ London: Sawbridge Enterprises, 1981, p. 29] which age he finally confirmed in a discourse in 2000. Yet, contradictorily, in two early discourses in 1960 and 1961 respectively, he gave the length of his remaining life as 58 and 59 years (see scan of one instance below). This adds up to a life-span of only either 92 or 93 years! However, Mr. Ratan Lal, who was one of the closest associates of Sathya Sai Baba for many years, reported in a lecture at the ashram that  Sai Baba had repeated the prediction of 96 years personally to him, telling this to a friend of ours who edited his books for him (Anne-Irene). Moreover, Sai Baba had also told him that was no-one’s business when he would leave the body – he could even prolong his life if he deemed necessary! It certainly seems he was covering himself for whenever it actually happens”.

Sathya Sai Baba condemns his critics as “demons”

“The record to date shows, however, that Sathya Sai Baba’s self-described “glory” has not “gone on increasing day by day”. It has diminished in the eyes of the world (foreign devotees have dropped away in huge droves) and he is a wheelchair-bound invalid who very seldom smiles and who is actually reported by close servitors as crying much of the day! Among the elite of Indian politics, many worship Sathya Sai Baba. One small example: in an article in the International Herald Tribune, the Indian pundit Shashi Tharoor actually endorsed Sathya Sai Baba as a genuine miracle maker and virtually all-knowing person – see more here“.

Disquiet In India On Sathya Sai Baba

Despite a profound black ban by most of the Indian media on news inimical to Sathya Sai Baba and his cult, various forces of dissent in India continue to protest Sathya Sai Baba related visits involving Sathya Sai Baba devotee Chief Minister of the State of Maharashtra, Ashok Chavan. The two news reports below are months apart. 

 In the second report, our ‘old’ acquaintance, Shrivraj Patil, the former Indian Home Minister rates a mention. Patil is one of a number of deeply disgraced former government officials who are devotees of Sathya Sai Baba.  One cannot but wonder whether, in his role as India’s ministerial guardian of internal security,  he had been listening far too believingly to his guru’s badly failed prophecies, instead of to the shrewder species of Indian government security advisor.

Innumerable are Sathya Sai Baba’s failed predictions (just as are his broken promises of healing, places in his education institutions, that he will travel to this and that country, and so on). One of the tragedies of India is that so many of her leaders rush off, at great expense, to listen to the prognostications of gurus and other fortune tellers. His editors have made a desperate, but eventually hopeless to expunge some of his more damaging statements from the official Sai literature. In his  Convocation address, 22 October 2008, Sathya Sai Baba – in an utterance that the history of terrorism discloses as tragically crass – said:

 “India is the only place where people are not worried about any attacks.  In America , Germany and other countries, they can’t eat well or sleep well. There is fear of bombs always in those countries. But in India, there is no fear of bombs. India will never have any such attacks.”

Maharashtra CM postpones visit to Sai Baba ashram

With anger against Maharashtra [ Images ] sweeping across Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan [ Images ] has cancelled his visit to Sri Satya [ Images ] Sai Baba’s Ashram in Puttaparthi slated for Wednesday.Chavan was to arrive at Prashanti Nilayam at Puttaparthy in Anantapur district to seek the blessings of Sai Baba but he had to cancel his program on the request of the authorities.According to the police sources, in view of the threat of Telugu Desam party to organise protest against Chavan in the entire district on Wednesday, the Sathya Sai Central Trust requested Chavan to postpone the visit. Accordingly, he decided not to come to Puttaparthi, police officials said.

Chief Minister-elect Ashok Chavan ignored protests by anti-superstition  activists and hosted controversial spiritual guru Sri Sathya Sai Baba at his official residence, Varsha, on Sunday. Off limits to the media, Varsha looked festive – floral arches and red carpets greeted Sai Baba (82) and his entourage.

A political leader, requesting anonymity, said Chavan  and his family performed padyapooja (prayer at the feet) of the guru and later hosted a sumptuous maha prasadam (auspicious lunch) for the guests and devotees including family friends and former Union home minister Shivraj Patil, among several other Congress and NCP leaders.

While anti-superstition  activists phoned news channels and newspapers to protest, Chavan called the programme “my personal matter and nothing to do with politics”.

Narendra Dabholkar, president of Andhashraddha Nirmal Samiti (organisation for the eradication of superstition),  said from Pune: “Chavan has disregarded the Indian Constitution, which calls for a scientific approach to everything. He should have taken a  cue from former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who in his entire political career did not visit or worship any baba.”

The Shiv Sena, which often  violently enforces a version of Hindutva ideology, protested Chavan’s move. “We have no complaints if Chavan visits Sai  Baba at his ashram. But Varsha is not Chavan’s personal property. It belongs to the state’s 10 crore people, so no such event should be held there,” said Subhash Desai, the Sena’s group leader in the Assembly.

I just want to share the good news that Swami is with Obama. When Obama
Came to Pittsburgh in Sept unannounced for a private meeting with host
Committee in Pittsburgh, we were invited as a part of the host committee
Team. We had an opportunity to speak to him personally for few minutes.
I gave him Sai Baba’s picture, he took it and looked at it intensely and
Asked ‘who is this’? I told him HE is my spiritual guru and am
Giving you for your guidance, good luck and protection. He put the
Picture in the pocket of his coat and told me he will always keep it.
Few hours later, my husband got a call from Obama’s campaign manager
And security people as to what was that picture about because Obama kept
That picture in his wallet. My husband explained to them that the
Picture is our spiritual master and we gave him for his good luck,
Guidance and safety. They were ok with that response.
Few days ago, my husband was invited for Obama Victory celebration and the Same campaign manager said Dr. Sharma your guru’s picture has worked.

A glance at Anita Sharma’s email (see below) is enough for anyone not a blind follower to get a glimpse of a particular phenomenon. It is one that occurs when the idolized guru figure is believed to have made an impact on this or that celebrated power figure. It is widely seen among worshippers of Sai Baba:  immediately mobiles, landlines and email systems run hot.  Ooo and ahhh – Look at the untold Grace our Guru is bestowing right round the world! Hilary Clinton wants to see Swami! Ohhh and hallelujah! and Jai Sai Ram! Did you know that I sat next to  Raisa Gorbachev in the Puttaparthi darshan and she told me that Michael Gorbachev keeps a book of Swami’s discourses by his bedside! Ooo ooo ahhh ahhh, I was at Puttaparthi when Swami sat Steven Seagal on a sort of throne next to Him. O what a Leela Swami plays! Barach Obama’s Visit To India: Will Sathya Sai Baba’s Organization Try To Capitalize?

Note:  With the visit of U.S. President Barach Obama to India fast looming, I sent the following letter this morning.

To Attention:  Anita Doll, Public Affairs Officer, US Embassy, Canberra, Australia.

Dear Ms Doll,

I write as an international coordinator of a network of former followers of India’s most famous religious leader, Sathya Sai Baba. The wish expressed here is that President Barach Obama’s visit to India is not in any way used by the extremely powerful Sathya Sai Baba elements or sympathizers who occupy virtually every major power echelon in India.

The way in which, with the assistance of senior diplomats, such usage was averted in the case of the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s visit to India is recorded here: Tony Blair Was to Visit Sai Baba. Plan Thwarted.

We made successful representations to the UK Government, which led – with almost last-minute advice from the British High Commission in Delhi to the then British Prime Minister – to the cancellation of his intended visit to Sathya Sai Baba. Blair was within minutes of proceeding to Sathya Sai Baba’s establishment at Whitefield, just outside Bangalore.

Our group reflects very wide professional backgrounds, belief systems and countries of origin, and made, among other investigations appearing in some of the world’s leading media, large contributions to the BBC documentary ”The Secret Swami’ (2004), which has been seen by mass audiences in many countries around the world. the  United States Government spokesperson confirmed to the BBC (as referred to in ‘The Secret Swami’), that the person referred to in their Travel Warning to U.S. travellers was in fact Sathya Sai Baba.

 

“CRIME IN ANDHRA PRADESH – Americans traveling to or residing in Andhra Pradesh should also be aware that there have been media and other reports of inappropriate sexual behavior by a prominent local religious leader. Most of the reports indicate that the subjects of these approaches have been young male devotees, including a number of Americans. Although these reports are unconfirmed, American citizens should be aware of this information”.

 

In your archives, you will find submissions made by many well-respected US citizens, led by (the late) Glen Meloy of southern California, and records of my own detailed discussion with John Peters 202-647-6179. Your other officer concerned was: Angela Aggeler 202-647-2114, who was the officer dealing with the media. Along the way, we were informed that two political officers from the US Consulate in Chennai made extensive enquiries into Sathya Sai Baba and the Puttaparthi ashram in the State of Andhra Pradesh, South India. We know from our involvement in many submissions, and via extensive reliable contacts, that a number of other governments, including my own (Australia) have also investigated Sathya Sai Baba and his international cult.

Questions have been raised in many countries, including the USA, about Sathya Sai Baba and the Sathya Sai Organization. Some of many areas of concern include: his large-scale, serial sexual abuse of boys and young men from many countries (including several in the USA), implication in police executions in Sathya Sai Baba’s bedroom in 1993 and the attendant, monumental cover-up (unsuccessfully opposed by a number of Indian senior police, journalists, a former Home Secretary and others) of these events.  See:  V.P.B. There is also deep concern at repeated allegations down many years of Puttaparthi front-office and other ashram scams, and misappropriation of funds raised in many countries that are sent in truly prodigious amounts to the Sathya Sai Central Trust in India. In September 2000, after months of intense effort by former Sathya Sai Baba followers from several countries, UNESCO and its joint sponsor the University of Flinders, South Australia, withdrew sponsorship of a large international education conference on human values under Sathya Sai Baba’s aegis at Puttaparthi. After the (then) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Chubb, appointed a senior Staff member to investigate, delegates from Flinders University Institute of International Education cancelled. UNESCO’s Media Advisory stated:

 “The Organisation is deeply concerned about widely reported allegations of sexual abuse involving youths and children that have been leveled at the leader of the movement in question, Sathya Sai Baba.”  

UNESCO also filed a complaint against the Times of India (one of whose directors is a long-time key member of the Sathya Sai Central Trust) which gravely watered down the UNESCO Media Advisory. It subsequently printed the correct Advisory. UNESCO leaders had a number of Concerns, inter alia:  

“Certain decisions were taken by the Institute of Sathya Sai Education without consultation, such as plans to hold some of the sessions at the Ashram of the Sathya Sai movement in Puttaparthi, and the inclusion of some speakers in the conference programme without their previous consent. Furthermore, the Organization is deeply concerned about widely reported allegations of sexual abuse involving youths and children that have been levelled at the leader of the movement in question, Sathya Sai Baba.””.  See:  The Case of UNESCO’s Missing Media Advisory.

One notes in current news reports that the Obama India visit team is taking great care to avoid unfortunate image problems. We trust that the depth of our past submissions, and the high credibility of your country’s citizens who have made them to you, that the US State Department will ensure that any attempts by the Sathya Sai Baba Organization and its appendages to garner capital via the Obama visit are not successful.

Ms Doll, would you please assure us of your Government’s strenuous efforts to review our concerns?
