‘Little Fly’. A Ballad of ‘Rock Spiders’ and Sexual Abuse of the Young

Posted by Barry Pittard on June 17, 2011

Little Fly.  A Ballad By Barry Pittard.

She was 9, and she knew nothing

‘Little fly,’ ‘Little fly’ he called her

As she writhed in his spider toils

As kind Uncle with his charm enthralled her

But who, who would believe her?

Would you, you believe her?

She was 12, and she knew little

In another spider’s toils

All oozing charm he harmed her

There are many rock spiders that toil

But who, who would believe her?

Would you, you believe her?

Little fly, little fly, little fly

Fleeing from a rock spider’s toils

Into her music she flew

As all too few can do

Can you?

Then she was 14. And caught

Caught again – would you believe?!

By another rock spider. Another

Abused her, too. Like they do

Then she slashed her wrists

Like kids who are rock-spidered can do

Would you?

She was 16, with a heartful of music

Her keyboard lifted her up like a lifebuoy

She loved her teacher but he struck

She ripped herself from his toils

Little fly, little fly, little fly

Fleeing from another spider’s toils

Into her music she flew

As all too few can do

Can you?

Can you?

She forged a first-rate band

Made musical gossamer shapes

Where her pain spun to love in her hands

And human angels played

Human angels played

Can you?

Can you?

She could maestro the Berlin Philharmonic

But makes music lots of people can play

She prays for spiders to be angels

With no venom for any child

Again and again, helpless

She makes music lots of people can play

And words lots of people can understand

Can you?

Can you?

She writes songs from the heart to the heart

Not for the sake of one more song

But for those distraught in webs ….. caught up

In case they should ache for too long

Far, far too long

She toils for spiders to be angels

With no venom for any child

No venom for any child

Do you?

Do you?
