Al Rahm’s Explanatory Letter To Sathya Sai Baba Internet Proxy Gerald Moreno

Posted by Barry Pittard on January 14, 2010

Al Rahm was one of Sathya Sai Baba’s highest profile leaders. Part of his testimony, and that of his son, Alaya, can be seen in the BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ and DR’s ‘Seduced’. See links HERE.

 Al Rahm’s Explanatory Letter

1. Introductory note by Barry Pittard

2. Copy of a letter by Alaya Rahm’s parents. Date: 12-06-04

The letter copied below was from: Al Rahm. Date: 2004-11-15 12:27 a.m. to: Joe Moreno (‘This day he is in Denial City, next day he will regret his Huge Stupidity’). The latter says that he, Moreno, is not a devotee but he has web and blog sites on the web that show beyond doubt that he is highly partial to SSB.

Sometimes pointing to genuine mistakes (which are not sinister, as Moreno would frequently have it), he has typically leaped to most unfair, out-of-context, erroneous conclusions, virtually trying to set himself up as a sort of one-man ombudsman. With no sensitivity to how sexual abuse survivors (and other close parties, such as families) feel, he has, e.g., demanded that they send their affidavits to him.

Mr Moreno has raised questions about the validity of much former devotee testimony, and Al Rahm’s response is surely a model of restraint in the face of one who shows great insensitivity to the feelings of many SSB survivors.  This adversary daily excels himself in assailing many individuals whose goodness only bigoted SSB activists would ever dare to slur. It is right, as Mr Moreno says – but no differently to many former devotees who also ask for it (but sensitively, patiently and lovingly) – that issues about factual evidence be clarified. But it will be clarified with police, abuse counsellors, and legal representatives – in preference to Mr Moreno.

Cc.’d recipients of the letter below were former devotees:  1. Rick Raines. Before leaving the Sathya Sai Organization, he was a Regional president in an area comprising Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana  – the South Central Region of USA. He was a member of the national council, reporting to Dr Michael Goldstein. 2. Glen Meloy, 26 years a devotee, was a close personal assistant to Mrs Elsie Cowan,  member of the first Advisory Board of the Sathya Sai Baba Society for USA, and Co-Manager, Sathya Sai Book Center of America, Tustin, California. 3. Barry Pittard, 25 years a devotee, taught English for two years at the Sathya Sai College at Whitefield, 1978-1979.

Al Rahm. Brief Background:

In a sworn affidavit forwarded to the FBI, the State Department and other relevant agencies, dated Tuesday, October 31, 2000, Al Rahm writes:  “By the year 1999 I had been a devotee of Sai Baba for 26 years. I started and lived in a Sai Baba community in Northwest Arkansas.  I was one of 5 regional officers in region 10 of the Sai Baba Organization of the United States.  I had started the first Sai School in the United States at the personal direction of Sai Baba in interviews that took place in 1997.  The school was a 501c3 non-profit by the name of School of Human Values.  I was travelling to regional conferences all over the United States along with my family as a guest speaker and we also sang devotional music.  The crowds would often be as large as 500 or more people.”

Faithfully,  Barry Pittard.  December 6, 2004.

Al Rahm’s Explanatory Letter Joe Moreno, and others, contacted me to clarify what appear to be inconsistencies in Alaya’s testimony. All of Alaya’s testimony and the testimony of his family is true. The inconsistencies are merely editing issues.  Perhaps the following will explain for you. Alaya was born into a family who taught him from birth to believe that Sai Baba was a fully conscious, physical manifestation of god, or otherwise known as an avatar.  Alaya’s first personal contact with Sai Baba was in a family interview with his parents when he was 8 months old.  Alaya was again in an interview with his family when he was in the second grade.  He did not have any private time with Sai Baba on either of those occasions.  When he was 16 years old he went to India with a friend along with Wilma Bronke’s group.  On that trip Sai Baba called him into a private interview and on that occasion Sai Baba began the sexual contact by rubbing oil on Alaya’s genitals and kissing on the mouth and attempting to cause an erection in Alaya. When Alaya returned from that trip with a robe and a ring that had been given to him by Sai Baba we asked many questions about every detail of his interview.  He told us that there were some things he could not tell because Sai Baba had told him never to tell anyone.  I suspected that this must be the oil treatment since I had received a similar treatment when I was 18 and was also told by Sai Baba never to tell anyone.  Also, the leader of the Litestorm group, who I was staying with at the time asked me if Baba had made me oil and rubbed it on me.  I said yes and he told me that it had happened to all the guys in the group.  He said, “Welcome to the club, Swami does that to help get rid of sexual desires in us.” That was in 1974 and it was 1979 before I had another interview with Sai Baba. I was married by then and had a child. I had no further experiences involving oil or touching by Sai Baba and so I accepted the oil experience as sort of a doctor patient relationship and thought no harm was done. After Alaya’s return from his first private interview in 1995 I privately asked if he had received the oil treatment from Sai Baba. Alaya was surprised that I knew.  He admitted it to me and we agreed to keep it to ourselves. I asked him if he felt that there was anything sexual in it and he said no, that it was like Baba was a doctor doing his job. He did not mention to me at that time that Sai Baba had kissed him deeply or tried to cause an erection.  What the reader must realize here is that a 16-year-old boy who has been born and raised into this belief thinks of this person, Sai Baba, as god, tells himself that it must be a great blessing and there could not be any way that it was sexual.  Baba was saying it was a good luck opportunity and that he was purifying him. However, in Alaya’s case it went further.  In 1997, in front of the first international young adult conference in puttaparthi, Alaya was singled out and called in for 14 interviews in a period of less than 2 months in front of 20,000 young adults from around the world.  7 of those interviews were with his family but Alaya was also called privately in each of those as well. He and his entire family were given rings, watches, earrings, photos with Sai Baba, robes, silk lungis etc. etc. etc. Alaya was the envy of every young adult there and his family was also in a very desired position.  Alaya came out of one interview with a hand full of cash given to him from Sai Baba.  There was over $1000 in rupees that Alaya was told to give to his mother to take care of the room, food, saris etc. and there was $3000 in crisp one hundred dollar bills for Alaya. Sai Baba kept calling Alaya his exemplary boy. He told Alaya that he had picked out his wife, a daughter of the Craxi family of Italy.  Baba impressed on Alaya how much money they had and that he, (Baba), would introduce Alaya to prime ministers and presidents from around the world.  Baba always impressed on Alaya how wealthy he was going to make him if he did what he wanted him to.  We did not know at that time what Sai Baba really meant.  We thought he meant if Alaya behaved with exemplary character and studied well etc. Sai Baba told us that all of this attention was being given to us because we were all great devotees of Shirdi Sai Baba and that Alaya was the greatest devotee of Shirdi Sai Baba.  Baba instructed us to start the first Sai School in the US but not to use his name in it because the US organization would give us too much hassle if we did.  He told me he wanted me to make a movie and that he would be in it.  He looked over the by laws and photos of our community and signed them with his approval.  He invited us to sing in the mandir, which we did. He invited us back to puttaparthi for Christmas. You can only imagine the high that we were all going through. You can only imagine how Alaya felt seeing his family in the peak of their life.  After all, from his viewpoint, this was their god.  This was what they lived for. This was what every devotee hoped for.  What we did not know at the time is that Alaya was paying a heavy price for all of this glory. A price, which he did not understand and could not tell us about because Sai Baba was threatening him not to tell, or Baba would never talk to his mother or family again.  How would you feel?  Baba even threatened to cause an accident and cut off Alaya’s penis if he told.  Remember, this is a boy who believed that Baba had this power.

We returned for Christmas and received more interviews, more money, more stuff, more singing in the mandir. We returned the next summer; more interviews, more money, more stuff and so on.  By the summer of 1998, Alaya’s mother began to detect a troubled feeling in him.  She assessed that the pressure Sai Baba was putting on Alaya was too much for him.  For example, Alaya was not to have any friendships outside of his family. He was to be in school or at home. He was not to speak with or associate with girls in any way.  He was only 18 and was to live like this until he was 25 when Sai Baba would perform his marriage to the Craxi girl. Baba insisted on these things openly in our family interviews and told Alaya’s mother and I that we were to insist and keep him in line. We spoke to leaders of the US organization who had been devotees for 30 plus years about these concerns over Alaya’s apparent hesitation and subtle withdrawal.  They always assured us that we should not be concerned and that Baba knew what was best.  When we asked Alaya about it he said that he wasn’t sure he wanted the marriage. He said that he wasn’t sure that Sai Baba knew what was best for him. By Christmas of 1999 we began to suspect something was very wrong.  I even told Alaya that if he was ever asked by Baba or anyone else to do anything that he didn’t feel was right in his heart, that he should say no. I told him that his family was with him and that we didn’t care if we ever had another interview. Alaya had his last private interview on our final trip to see Sai Baba that Christmas. In that interview, we later found out, he told Sai Baba that he didn’t like his behavior and Alaya left the interview.

After our return to the US we became even more concerned. Alaya did not look happy, he did not want Baba’s robe in his room, and he did not participate in young adult programs. Alaya said that he did not trust that Sai Baba knew what was best for him and that he didn’t care how much money the Craxis had, he wanted love in his marriage more than anything.  Marisa and I confronted Alaya in hopes of shaking him out of his resistance.  With great fear and hesitation Alaya finally told us what had really been happening behind that curtain in the private interview room.  I asked him why he had never told us before and he said that he was afraid that he would be responsible for bringing down the organization and that his parents might choose to stay with Sai Baba and that he would be alone without the family that he loved. He also explained that he was hoping it would stop and everything would be all right.  But it didn’t stop, it kept getting worse until all he could think to do was to stop going to India and never tell us about it for fear of losing us.

The abuse was much worse than oil on the genitals. Baba would get very angry with Alaya because Alaya couldn’t get an erection for Baba.  Alaya explained that he did not like it and that he liked girls.  He told Baba that he loved him but he did not want sex with him.  Baba didn’t care, that was what he wanted and he used the excuse that he was purifying Alaya. On one occasion Baba took off his robe and lungi and, fully naked, attempted to pull down Alaya’s pants and climb onto his back in an effort to have anal sex.  Alaya pushed him off and said no.  Baba got angry and put his robe back on. Then said he would never talk to Alaya again.  Alaya pleaded with him not to be angry and to please continue to grant interviews and talk with his parents and sisters.

After hearing the truth we contacted and met with Bill Harvey and Dr. Goldstein and told them the entire story.  We thought that they would at least get the information out to devotees so they would have the right to choose whether or not they accepted this behavior of Sai Baba. In time this information was shared with all of the leaders of the SSB organization of the United States as well as India.

Now, many claims have been made that testimony is inconsistent. For example;

1.      Alaya first said that when Baba first used oil and kissed him it was not sexual.  Later Alaya said it was sexual.
When he was 16 he convinced himself that it was not sexual and that is what he believed to be true. Later, after so many other experiences and a retrospective viewpoint, when Mick Brown, the Danish Broadcasting Co. and the BBC interviewed him, he could see that it was sexual.  The BBC film did not explain that.  Only so much could be included in the final edit to keep within the time limits of the film. We never got to see any rough edits nor were we consulted regarding the final edit.  As a matter of fact we didn’t even see a copy until after it aired in the UK.

2.      Alaya said he received $10,000 and I said several thousand dollars.
To me several means 3 or more.  I don’t bother counting it all up.  Who cares?  So What? It may have been more than $10,000 in cash.

3.      Alaya talked openly with other American devotee boys who had similar experiences, or they didn’t talk because they were afraid that Baba, who was omnipresent, would know.
Yes, he talked with American and Indian devotees, at Sai retreats in the US. One of these boys attended Baba’s school and was the son of a woman who worked in the balvikas program in the US. This boy was undergoing similar sexual pressure and threats from Sai Baba. His mother always received a lot of attention from Sai Baba including earrings, praise etc. This boy was afraid to tell her because Sai Baba would threaten never to talk to her again. That is the same technique that Sai Baba used on Alaya (a boy’s love for his mother). That boy never did tell his mother that we know of and eventually left Sai Baba’s school. Other boys who went to Baba’s school said that there are whole groups of boys who have sex with Sai Baba and that Baba has boys brought to his bedroom at night. Alaya and these boys tried to figure it out together since they could not tell anyone else, but they were afraid to talk about it too much because they were afraid also that Baba might know. They weren’t sure. They suspected that Sai Baba really didn’t know. Sai Baba often displayed anger toward the boys. They were young, they were confused, they were abused, and they were searching!  Don’t get caught up with details that don’t matter.

The reason that other names, (like Sam Young) were used in Mick Brown’s article is because we were fresh into the awareness of the abuse and concerned about Alaya’s exposure and our family’s. We were unsure what it would mean to expose our family and our son to the world. There was even some concern for safety since reports of Dr. Batia fleeing for his life were circulating and Anil Kumar was in the states asking about our family. Yet, we felt it was important to share the truth.  We never contacted the media they contacted us.  We did however share the true story with anyone who asked.  By the time the BBC contacted us we had had several years to think about it and we decided to come fully forward.  It took a lot of courage on Alaya’s part and on ours.  We were never paid anything for any of our testimony.  We have nothing to gain from any of it.  We simply did it to share the truth with those who might have the courage to hear it.

All of the testimony is true.  The editing often makes it difficult to follow the timing and remember this took place from the spring of 1995 to January of 1999.

The most important fact is that sexual abuse has taken place not only with Alaya but also with many boys.  I personally have been contacted by boys from around the world since this happened.  Their stories are the same when it comes to the sexual abuse. It always starts with the oil and then it escalates. I suspect that it is still going on.

Please don’t get caught up over insignificant details

Sincerely and Truthfully,

Alaya’s Parents

Tiger Woods Faces $164 Fine. Sathya Sai Baba Still Free

Posted by Barry Pittard on December 11, 2009

World champion pro golfer Tiger Woods faces a $164 fine for the driving incident in Orlando Florida, USA on 27 November 2009. Out of this small incident has erupted an ever-burgeoning series of revelations that have dominated world news headlines since that early morning.

Many commentators – even among those who agree that Sathya Sai Baba should have been answerable to proper processes of the law -keep saying:  But look at all the good social work that he has inspired.

Tiger Woods also has also brought a high profile to, and raised great amounts of money for, needy causes.

But you see – the one tiger is answerable before the law. The other one, in India, isn’t …..

For consorting with various sorts of dames

Now no-one’s denying a man sometimes connives

But don’t these gals know these guys have wives?

Says the Reporter – I’ve got this sacred duty

To service goodness and truth and beauty

I’ve millions of readers who need me to feed them

And my Publisher feeds me my bonus to heed them

Says the Lawyer to each blushing dainty damozel

Close your mouth now honey, we’ll pay you so swell

Lawyer says: trumpet small – but in essence don’t squeal

Lawyers and Reporters love Mademoiselles

Who tout and spout a tale that sells

Now here’s a conundrum – you can have a go

Just tell me who’s the pro, and who’s the pro!

On Leaving the Sathya Sai Baba Cult (Part 1.)- Ex Leaders and Rank-and-File

Posted by Barry Pittard on November 20, 2009

In 1999, came the publication (August-September) of three articles in a piece entitled: Sathya Sai Baba Exposed. These had been taken up from other sources by the editor, Duncan Roads, who, quite separately and via his own sources in Australia, had suffered his own disillisionment in Sai Baba. A person close to me, who knew well that I had deafened my ears to anything inimical to Sathya Sai Baba, strongly urged me to read these articles, one of which was by the (then) head of the Australian Sathya Sai Organization, Terry Gallagher, an agricultural scientist and businessman of Kyama, in the state of New South Wales on Australia’s eastern seaboard.

Sathya Sai Organization, Australia, Ex-Head Terry Gallagher’s Testimony Against Sathya Sai Baba

Terry Gallagher.  A Voice of Conscience Raised In The Wilderness

Terry Gallagher had come to realise – between 1986 and 1993 (the latter being the year of the grisly police executions in Sai Baba’s bedroom) that grave matters had been profoundly covered up, not only by the ashram officials but by local, state and central governments. Those who eventually leave commonly do not leave suddenly. There is a fighting against the blinkers. There is refuge in thought of all the positives that have occured.

In much detail, by telephone, Terry Gallagher told me that, against extraordinary unwillingness of devotees in the Australian Sathya Sai Organization, to look at the allegations,  he had done what he could to investigate. This led to his surfacing, after his private discussions with those whom he regarded as dependable witnesses, including a number of Sathya Sai Baba college/university students, terrible facts about Sai Baba’s serial sexual abuse of young males. He also took his concerns to Sathya Sai Baba, whom he says tried to get from him who his informants were. He told me that he had extensively, in the course of a whole weekend, shown documentation to Valmai Worthington, a Brisbane leader of the Sathya Sai Organization, who has led many groups to from Australia to see Sai Baba. This led to no meaningful action, and she has continued to lead groups, including those with young males in them. In fact, she led the group of which I was a member when it went to India on mid November 1997.

Other leaders were likewise impervious and went into the utmost psychological denial. Groups, including those with young males in them, continued to go to the ashram. (See the link at the top of the present article for excerpts from the Terry Gallagher testimony and the link to the full document). These explorations – including direct contact with a number of deeply concerned students from Sai Baba’s education establishment – culminated in Terry Gallager’s resignation on the most serious moral principle from his headship of the Australian Sathya Sai Organization. However, he said, his relations with his brother-in-law, Neville Fredericks, now the head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Australia, had slowly been repaired in both the family and business sense, and he (Gallagher) didn’t want to raise his voice further. NOTE:  For those with limited time, I have excerpted, for the sake of a focus, some points from Terry Gallagher’s testimony, which was first published by David and Faye Bailey (very prominent leaders who also resigned) in The Quarterly, UK.  See also:

David Bailey and Thomas Wiehe. Transcript Of Phone Link: Sathya Sai Abuses

Truth In Action: David and Faye Bailey Vs Sathya Sai Baba

Later the Gallagher testimony appeared in the September-October 1999 edition of the Australian magazine ‘Nexus’. Before returning to Sathya Sai Baba for a few months in November 1997, I had somehow dared to look at writings on the Internet. I read the Canadian academic rationalist philosopher Professor Dale Beyerstein, of the University of British Columbia. His very incisively-written book: “Sai Baba’s miracles: and overview is HERE.  There was the likewise articulate Italian former devotee Paul Holbach.

Across a range of Sai Baba issues, their writing was disciplined and probing; they raised questions which, by any token, deserved proper answers. These were the sorts of questions which, if not answered frankly and truthfully, could best be answered by properly consitituted processes, such as a police, court of law or government enquiry. Above all, they needed to be answered by the leaders of the Sathya Sai Organization. But they were glacially silent. Except to slander and drive out those who questioned, whom they very well know through years of experience of them to be truthful persons. Sathya Sai Baba and his servitors remain tight-lipped to this day, all these years after – although the allegations, not only of sexual abuse but abuses of various other grave kinds. With incredible mendacity, they tell their congregations – inasmuch as they tell them very much at all – that ‘the allegations’ are made by a small handful of disgruntled individuals. It is a typical ploy used by many groups with serious matters to hide.

Hard questions were being raised. It was not enough, as so many devotees do when there is a process of questioning, to assume, somehow, the unworthiness of those who question.  In that direction the psychological factor of being in-denial is all too likely to kick in. Honest questions merit honest answers. During twenty-five years of deep devotion, I underwent many wonderful experiences, but facing the questions was not one of them. As I began to hear the direct testimony, and, in other cases, from parents and close friends of those who had been affected, the experience was gut-wrenching.

Michelle Goldberg, US Author-Journalist, on Sathya Sai Baba (1)

Posted by Barry Pittard on October 8, 2009

It is one of the gambits of pro Sathya Sai Baba activists like Indulal Shah (when he was active), Dr G.Venkataraman and his virtual counterpart Gerald Moreno, to portray highly reputed media journalists as sensationalist, and so on. In their offensive and denunciatory style, they fail to credit world leading media journalists, and the researchers as well, with a sharp eye and habits of careful checking into the credentials of the former devotees and other critics who have shared their accounts. The journalists work, for example, for the BBC, CBC, CNN, SBS, ABC, India Today, Times of London, Telegraph, Guardian, The Age, and newspapers in Europe and Canada.

It is a version of the Orwellian “Four legs good, two legs bad!” In George Orwell’s classic novella ‘Animal Farm’, Rule #1. (for the animals contra the human beings) is:  “Whatever goes upon two feet is an enemy”. In the Venkatarman-Moreno nomenclature:  All former devotees and other critics who dissent from Sathya Sai Baba are wrong. Likewise all highly reputed media who investigate and report critically.

Both these individuals can be shown conclusively to have borne false witness against former devotees, notwithstanding that the latter have, many of them for decades, been in good standing as deeply committed workers among Sathya Sai Baba’s faithful. Suddenly:  All legs who have not walked away, good. All who have walked away, in dissenting, bad.

David and Faye Bailey

In short, individuals like David Bailey and his wife Faye are deemed to be bad. This is a man to whom Sathya Sai Baba gave extraordinarily such grave responsibilities, not only in care, as a lecturer in Music at his university, of students whom Sai Baba holds to be the ‘apple of his eye’, but also in David Bailey’s rare status of  being a travelling emissary at Sai Baba’s behest to various parts of the world. Indeed, it was as he travelled that individuals in good standing would come up and privately share their terrible accounts. But Bailey dissented from Sathya Sai Baba and those core leaders who were found to have been covering up for him for many decades.

Therefore, Bailey bad. Bailey to be denounced. Bailey to be defamed.

Faye Bailey, who Sathya Sai Baba chose as bride for David Bailey and himself presided over their wedding, was a widely known and respected figure in the Sathya Sai Organization in Australia. Like David, Faye Bailey was privy to ever-increasing direct, personal accounts of those – or, in other cases, the parents or closely related others – with harrowing accounts of Sathya Sai Baba’s sexual abuse of boys and young men over many years, and various other most shocking types of abuses more widely. Again, in the Orwellian schemata referred to above, Faye Bailey bad. Faye Bailey to be denounced and defamed.

For years, people = good, when close to Sathya Sai Baba;  suddenly, as if they have become devils overnight, those same people = bad!

It has been the discovery of each independent third party like the media mentioned above, and like those independent scholars who have tried to research it, that the Sathya Sai Organization leaders are engaged in a powerful suppression of information about itself, and about the many worldwide allegations.

For the long, well-researched Salon.com article (25 July, 2001) the noted US journalist Michelle Goldberg travelled to India, and also interviewed witnesses in various countries.  Ms Goldberg wrote of David and Faye Bailey’s ‘The Findings’:

“Part of the nearly 20,000-word piece is given over to evidence that Sai Baba fakes his materializations and doesn’t magically heal the sick — revelations that seem self-evident to nonbelievers but provoke fierce debate in devotee circles and blazing headlines in the Indian press. Most of “The Findings” consists of testimony of sexual harassment and sexual abuse. “Whilst still at the ashram, the worst thing for me — as a mother of sons — occurred when a young man, a college student, came to our room, to plead with David, ‘Please Sir, do something to stop him sexually abusing us,'” Faye writes. “These sons of devotees, unable to bear their untenable position of being unwilling participants in a pedophile situation any longer, yet unable to share this with their parents because they would be disbelieved, placed their trust in David; a trust which had built over his five years as a visiting professor of music to the Sai college.” These pleas eroded the Baileys’ faith and finally made them go public”.

Concerning Attempts To Contact Former Sathya Baba Followers

Posted by Barry Pittard on October 4, 2009

Every now and then, networked former devotees are approached for information of a kind that, because of sensitivity, stands outside commentary on such trusted sites as:

Concerning Attempts To Contact Former Sathya Baba Followers

In regard to sincere enquirers:  Not everyone seems to understand how fragile human beings who have survived various forms of abuse most commonly are. We have met with those situations where the abuse accounts to us come from decades back, and yet the person’s sensitivity is still great. It is frequently an area for trained, experienced counselors – and not for the rest of us, however well-meaning.

In the case of approaches to us, we carefully vet so as to screen off the proven attempts of Gerald Moreno and others to infiltrate or otherwise undermine former devotee work to bring about proper third party investigation of Sathya Sai Baba and core components of his international Sathya Sai Organization.

Where certain very serious infractions occur or appear likely to be occurring, we have a direct contact to high-ranking contact in Interpol (details of which we are happy to share with bona fide investigators). In one instance, in which Interpol were informed, a former student and lecturer in Sathya Sai Baba’s establishment at Puttaparthi attempted to penetrate us, and he and his family consequently received a visit from a senior member of the Indian police force.

It has been important for us to take advice from outstanding abuse professionals, lawyers, and so on. The temerity, and in some cases the naivity, of some requests to us for even the most sensitive information might stagger those who had not grown used to it.

In one case, there was an attempted penetrative subterfuge practised – fortunately unsuccessfully – against a major broadcaster. Through our own resources, we were able to uncover the unprincipled interloper. It was a member of a large and powerful law firm, whose head is someone once known to me. He (the latter) is one of the Sathya Sai Organization’s key legal advisors. (Details of this culumny will be shared with any well-reputed media or other bona fide agency which might investigate the Sathya Sai Baba issue).

The Security of Affidavits and Other Sensitive Testimony Concerning Sathya Sai Baba-related Abuses

Under no circumstances are we, on behalf of those who have entrusted to us their affidavits, ready to allow them to be seen by other than appropriate and very reputed lawfirms, and media such as the BBC, Times of London, etc., or agency such as UNESCO, and in some instances to those former devotees of known, long-established standing in relevant professions, such as the mental health or medical areas, who assist us. And then and only then with the updated approval of those who have provided prior documentation to one of my close colleagues or me – the families and/or the abuse survivors themselves. (Other forms of abuse in addition to sexual abuse of boys and young men are included).

Sathya Sai Baba can’t escape the sex abuse testimonies

Posted by robertpriddy on October 3, 2009

At least 30 young men have openly testified in public to one or another form of sexual abuse by Sathya Sai Baba, from handling of genitals to masturbation and oral sex. Numerous others who fear for their own safety have contacted trusted dissidents in private with their accounts.

Truth In Action: David and Faye Bailey Vs Sathya Sai Baba

Posted by Barry Pittard on September 24, 2009

For several months of each year, the British pianist David Bailey taught music at the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning in Puttaparthi, founded in November 1981,which became the Sri Sathya Sai University. For a number of years, Bailey was in a unique role – a westerner with extraordinary access to Sathya Sai Baba, who also assigned him to envoy duties to a number of countries, which is a role he has assigned to very few, such as Indulal Shah, V.K. Narasimhan, Dr V.K. Gokak, Dr S. Bhagavatham, Dr D.J. Gadhia, Dr Michael Goldstein, J. Jadadeesan, Professor Al Drucker.

David Bailey’s wife, Faye, prior to marrying him, had been prominent in the functions of the Sathya Sai Organization in Australia. Sathya Sai Baba arranged their marriage and officiated at their wedding.

David and Faye Bailey. Authors of 'The Findings'. An historic and lengthy indictment of Sathya Sai Baba, by two former and very close disciples

Great was their – and indeed the general – surprise at this turn of events, but they,  accepting him as their guru, complied. They are still together. However, having left him after boys from the college and also troubled devotees from around the world came to them with harrowing accounts of sexual abuse of boys and young men, and other forms of abuse, they eventually found the pressure of speaking out to be too much to bear (It is not, a small few of us note, one of the world’s magnetic attractions) . They did not, though, vacate the critical scene before having written a long document, entitled ‘The Findings’ (click on title, below).

Shortly, I intend to  blog further on the matter, referring to the account of the U.S. author and journalist, Michelle Goldberg.

For more regarding the Terry Gallagher who is mentioned in ‘The Findings’, see HERE. He was the former head of the Sathya Sai Organization, who resigned after strenuously investigating the allegations of Sathya Sai Baba’s sexual molestation of boys and young men, and confronting Sai Baba himself.

Excerpt from:

The Findings by David and Faye Bailey, U.K.

“I had to find someone who had had the same level of experience as I had.

I began to look for Terry Gallagher, an Australian whom, I heard, had been close to Swami before my time. Terry had been Central Coordinator for the Sai organisation in Australia for three years, and had been given very preferential treatment from Sai Baba for a number of years. I traced him to Kiama in New South Wales, Australia.

I knew he had left the ashram vowing never to return, and I wanted to know why? I soon found out. Terry had discovered the unmentionable inner workings of Sai Baba as I had now done. Exactly the same… but more. Terry left, never to return after the assassination attempt by ex-students in 1993. I wanted to know what Terry knew. I soon did”.

‘BILD’ Story. “Guru Wants Sex” (Sathya Sai Baba)

Posted by Barry Pittard on September 13, 2009

The article quoted below, in which Jens Sethi , a former devotee, recounts being sexually abused by Sathya Sai Baba, is from the magazine ‘BILD’ of Munich on 21 August, 2000. Wikipedia states that ‘BILD’ is “the best-selling newspaper in Europe and has the sixth-largest circulation worldwide”.

About a year earlier, NEXUS Magazine (Australia), August-September 1999, featured three articles on Sathya Sai Baba, containing serious allegations. One of these was the testimony of a German husband and wife, Jens and Gurprit Sethi who had been devotees, but had left him.The other articles were the testimony of Terry Gallagher (who, on principle, had resigned as head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Australia) and Hans de Kraker, also Australia, who had reported his own experiences of Sathya Sai Baba sexual abuse, and had likewise resigned his roles having further investigated allegations of Sathya Sai Baba’s serial sexual abuse of boys and young men. Kraker was, for a number of years, head of the Western Canteen at Puttaparthi, See here) . Kraker’s account can be seen at:

A searing testimonial about Sathya Sai Baba

Posted by robertpriddy on August 30, 2009.

Until the NEXUS article, mentioned below, I had dismissed for many years as absurd no fewer than nine accounts of sexual abuse by Sai Baba, five of which I had heard between 1978 and 1982, and two shortly before I read the NEXUS articles, the rest between 1997 and 2000. I must say, though, it was a relief when leading sources such as India Today, The BBC, UNESCO, The Times of London, The Telegraph, The Guardian, BT, The Age, The Australian Financial Times, Vancouver Sun, Ottawa Citizen Gatopado , UNESCO, some academic institutions such as Flinders University, Australia and others, not known for sensationalism, took our team and witnesses seriously. Even the like of these have been attacked by an unscrupulous zealot who is known to be assisted by those long and strongly associated with Sathya Sai Baba. See: Exposure of Sathya Sai Baba. BILD (Wolfgang Ranft) interview on Sathya Sai Baba

Translation of text:-

RESIDENT FROM MUNICH RAN AWAY FROM INDIA –  GURU ALL OF A SUDDEN WANTS SEX

By Wolfgang Ranft

MUNICH – Jens Sethi was young, naive, full of religious expectations. In 1988 this resident from Munich who worked that time in a printing office travelled to India the land of the Hindu Gurus. The 24-year-old man was looking for new spiritual fulfillment. He found, what he was looking for. Sethi succumbed to the fascination of a Guru who was already 62-years old that time: Sathya Sai Baba. “I was totally fascinated by the Aura of Sai Baba”, he says today. “I surrendered in a way that I was mainly concentrating on him.” Every year he travelled together with his wife for four or six weeks to the Ashram of Sai Baba. During the festival time more than 20 000 devotees gather there.

The fascination remained for Sethi just an external moment as he never could approach the Guru during the first years. This happened only in October 1996 when Sethi finally decided to go to India where he settled down in Puttaparthi close to the Ashram. During the daily pilgrim-meeting he was called for an interview by the Guru, the utmost a pilgrim can expect within the Ashram. Sethi enjoyed his good luck. He, one of those rare devotees, who has been personally selected by the Guru.

But the conversation took a different course than he expected. Sethi appeared together with his wife. The Guru was outraged and has sent the woman away. Alone in the room the old man started to kiss the man from Munich, stroke him and went into the trousers. Shocked but still full of faith and naivety Sethi accepted two other meetings some month later. Again the Guru kissed him and finally touched his genitals.

Only then the young man ran away back to Germany. It took him three years to overcome the crisis and to separate himself mentally from his spiritual guide. During that time he did investigations in the internet and came to know about other young men from UK, Sweden, USA who underwent a fate of similar experiences.

Only this summer he did the final step to escape from the spell under the Guru: He brought a charge against Sathya Sai Baba at the public prosecutor´s office in Munich – because of sexual molestation.

In its cover story on the allegations, the mass distribution, multi language edition magazine ‘India Today’ (4 December 2000) stated:

“In Australia too, The Sunday Age carried an article on Baba’s sexual abuse. In Munich, Germany, Jens Sethi, a former devotee who claims he was molested, has filed a complaint in the public prosecutor’s office. In Sweden, the central Sai group has closed down and so too has a school based on programmes devised by educationists at the Baba ashram in Puttaparthi …

JENS SETHI is a German settled in Munich. He was a Sai Baba devotee for 10 years. His charges were published for the first time by the Focus magazine on September 18.

Allegations (as sent in a signed affidavit to INDIA TODAY): “In the private chamber, Baba said ‘Come,’ and kissed me on my lips for a long time. I resisted and he gurgled, ‘Have no fear. This is a good opportunity, so many are waiting for months and will not get.’ He asked me to remove my trousers, unzipped my fly and went with his right hand into my underpants. Baba massaged the genitals unasked. He expected some erection but this did not happen for I didn’t feel any sexual excitement. I also didn’t come for such games to Puttaparthi. I was really disgusted. Baba was disappointed and had the impudence to say, ‘It is very weak, don’t waste energy.’ When I looked at him, I realised the truth about him. He had such an evil vibration that moment. Soon, he sent me out of the room without saying a word.”

STATUS: Sethi recently filed a complaint with the public prosecutor in Munich. The Sai Baba Ashram has no comment on the allegations”.

Ex-NASA Scientist and Wife Test Sathya Sai Baba’s ‘Grace’

Posted by Barry Pittard on November 9, 2008

In 2000, Sathya Sai Baba devotees worldwide wanted desperately to cope with the allegations falling thick and fast of Sai Baba’s serial widespread sexual molestations of boys and young men.

Devotees extensively circulated a photocopy of talks by Yaani and her husband Professor Al Drucker at the ‘United Kingdom Sai Baba Retreat’, April, 2000. These two, especially Al Drucker, have been very influential in the history of the Sai Baba movement. Referring in their talks to Jaani Drucker’s rape in an official Sathya Sai Center, they both held that Jaani is not her body. She is only in a dream. Not being her body, but the eternal Atma, Jaani was never raped. All is the Lord’s Grace.

There is here a procrustean stretching of the Advaita Vedanta philosophy. Some have posited an ultimate state of non-physical being, but to do so can be to merge not into some blissful state of enlightenment but rather partake of an unreality which little equips human beings for deciding on issues of responsibility to their psychological welfare.

The Wishing Away Of Unpleasant Realities

For example, none should entertain the notion: The boys and young men who have had terribly shocking experiences at the hands of Sathya Sai Baba are not their body. Therefore, nothing, in all reality, happened to them. Secondly, even IF the Druckers were to be in some elevated state of spiritual enlightenment, it would be mistaken for anyone to think that all others should be as the Druckers.

Is the Druckers’ expression of a non-dualistic philosophy one to model to those struggling to make sense out of the shocks of the world or of the workaday world of commonsense and responsibility? The advaita philosophy improperly interpreted is full of dangers for the unwary.

al-drucker-when-young-former-nasa-specialistyaani-drucker

Al Drucker’s wife, Jaani

Belief System Interpretation of ‘Exalted’ Experiences

Jaani Drucker is surely right when she says “Denial gives energy to the darkest fears by attempting to hide them and put them out of the consciousness.  Exposing our fears or negative qualities undoes them and reveals them as the nothing that they have always been”.

However, one may doubt whether she has understood the power of but one of the human mind’s radical coping mechanisms when she relates, “Even while I was being brutally raped, within me all fear and horror of the situation had left. Quite inexplicably I became very calm and to my astonishment discovered an incredible compassion welling up in my heart”. However, those on some ‘spiritual’ paths will immediately interpret the experience according to their belief system. There are many accounts of those in situations of danger who have had similar experiences. But the happy state into which they entered is later belied, for example by their shaking bodies subsequent to the event and, far more, to poste-traumatic aftermaths.

Former Devotee Ends Her Euphoria

Ella Evers, along with her late husband had led a US Sathya Sai Baba center in Oregon, USA. (John had been a banker who had served as a Dutch intelligence officer in the war against Hitler’s Germany). Ella and John were among those many in the United States Sathya Sai Organization who left it after investigated cases within Sai Centers, having – with signal failure – put to the national leaders – such as Dr John Hislop, Dr Michael Goldstein, Bob Bozzani, Dr John C. Evans, Dr William Harvey, Dr Phylis Kristal, and others – the serious allegations that were arising within the organization, particularly about allegations against Sathya Sai Baba of his serial widespread sexual abuse of boys and young men. The following report depicts an experience familiar to very many former devotees who had earlier ignored the evidence of grave malpractice. They, in a state of psychological denial and commonly a euphoric state, preferred to rationalize the conflicted situations as “Swami’s Divine Play”, “Swami’s helping to speed up the evolution of those with bad karma”, and so on.

A Former Devotee Ends Her Euphoria

The Grant’s Pass (Oregon, USA) newspaper reporter wrote:

Evers claims that, during a trip to the India compound in 1989, she glimpsed Sai Baba unzipping the pants of a boy before the holy man jumped up and closed a gap in the interview curtain. “Wanting so desperately to be a good devotee”, she blamed her own impure thoughts and suppressed what she’d seen until she learned of other stories last year, she said. Evers doesn’t want to take away from the good works of Sai Baba followers, but she believes they have been slowly drawn in and discouraged from thinking for themselves.

When Huge Cult Is A Small Shop. Sai Cult Legal Tricks

Posted by Barry Pittard on July 7, 2008

In the Orange County court, USA, Alaya Rahm’s pro bono lawyer, William Brelsford, asked the judge if Sathya Sai Baba could be sued from the United Sates of America, to which the answer was no.

(Case: Alaya Rahm vs. Sathya Sai Baba Society, Superior Court of California, filed January 6, 2006, County of Orange)

It transpired that no one in the US could be held responsible for the sexual abuse by Sathya Sai Baba, not least because there was no registered Sathya Sai Organization (or, to be exact, Sathya Sai Society of America), in the US, only a bookshop and a Sathya Sai charitable society.

In short, the Sathya Sai Baba US cult’s legal advisors have been adroit all along e.g., in ensuring that the Sathya Sai Society of America is nothing but a bookshop – no matter how financially vast and highly organized Sathya Sai Baba’s cult in the USA in fact is.

Hence the case had to be withdrawn. But all the allegations stand fully still. Here are some articles/formal documents relevant to the case:

UK Law Lords’ Landmark Ruling On Sex Abuse

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 1, 2008

Breaking 400 years of precedents, Great Britain’s law Lords have ruled that it possible for those alleging sexual abuse to take legal action even years later.

One wonders whether the Manmohan Singh Government in India has the will or the capability of making such major changes in India. Certainly, it has made a beginning with its major study of child abuse in India. See my articles: Child Abuse. Landmark Indian Government Study. Abuse of Indian children ‘common’ and Child Abuse in India. Will Minister Renuka Chowdhury Act? and Dr Naresh Bhatia. Silenced Now In Indian Child Abuse Scourge

Whilst it is true – as activists (see below) make a point of urging – that such legal remedies are far too often the province of those who can afford it, nonetheless the existence of strong laws surrounding sexual abuse can help to influence further social reform. There has to be a strong constellation of responses. It is the case that, for example, many Nazi war criminals escaped the reach of formal justice. But this does not mean the the Nuremburg trials did not send powerful signals and highlight some very great evils.

Those who would attempt to somehow ‘wish’ evil away by averting the gaze and so-called ‘moving on’ help to perpetuate the very evils which they think they have little or no relationship to or responsibility for.

Especially among those who deem themselves ‘spiritual’, there is a lot of confusion about the significant differences between forgiving and forgetting. See my articles: Bernie Banton Case. Mega Poor Can Fight Mega Rich and Dalai Lama: Forgiveness does not mean forgetfulness

The following are excepts from the BBC report Wednesday, 30 January 2008, 13:10 GMT

Lords issue landmark abuse ruling
“Victims of sexual abuse may be able to sue their attackers after many years, following a ruling by the Law Lords.
(Quote from Baroness Hale):
“A fair trial can be possible long after the event and sometimes the law has no choice”
Leading child abuse lawyer Tracey Storey, of solicitors Irwin Mitchell, said the decision ended the “bizarre situation” which meant child abuse victims over the age of 24 could not sue their abusers.
David Greenwood of Jordans Solicitors, which also represents victims of child abuse, agreed that the ruling would “empower” people to come forward.
“Victims of sexual and physical abuse in care establishments can now be confident that even after many years they will be treated seriously and sympathetically by lawyers and the courts,” he said.
But Victim Support said that while it welcomed the ruling, it believed it would help only a small number of people.
“It’s very good news for her but the wider significance is questionable because the vast majority of offenders don’t have assets to chase,” said spokesman Paul Fawcett.

Hazards For Abuse Survivors Both Timid and Bold

Posted by Barry Pittard on November 6, 2007

Many abuse survivors are afraid to speak out.

Sai Baba’s proxy defenders on the Internet and elsewhere make the most of this difficulty. They say there have been no prosecutions of Sai Baba. Yet it often takes years or decades before survivors can come to terms with what happened to them.

Hazards Of Brave Abuse Survivors

Even those few ready to face the public with the facts can often be in no position to litigate. This is because of lack of funds, time, energy, or family or close friends to support them in an intelligent and genuine manner.

In one case (See 1. under Further Resources) which should never have failed, a pro bono lawyer let his client down badly and was not proactive enough to field excellent witnesses who stood ready – indeed at various kinds of personal sacrifice – to testify.

Problems of Litigation Acute

In any case, litigation is always an uncertain, costly and often extremely drawn-out process, especially in sex abuse cases where the success rate is still far lower than in most other common crimes.

Sai Baba Heavily Protected In India.

Added to these huge obstacles, Sathya Sai Baba enjoys (as he has done for many decades) powerful protection from the Indian Government, judiciary and other power echelons from any prosecution, as attempts to bring him to book in the Supreme Court of India and High Court of Andhra Pradesh have amply demonstrated. (See 2. 3. and 4. below)

Further Resources

1. Alaya Rahm’s Lawsuit vs Sathya Sai Society of America – Joint Statement by the International JuST Group and the Rahm family

2. Sai Baba Protected By The Supreme Court Of India

The archive at this link contains a document with court proof – contrary to assertions of Sai Baba’s proxy defenders on the Internet – that a case was in fact brought. One of India’s top advocates, Kamini Jaiswal, took the case on behalf of Hari Sampath, and she and her assisting Counsel Prashant Kumar and Gaurav Agarwal and their client had to suffer the ignominy of a kangaroo court presided over by the profoundly compromised  judges: S.P. Barucha, A.S. Anand, G.B. Patnaik (or G.B. Pattnaik), and R.C. Lahoti. Each one of these went on to become Chief Justice of India. Their CJ at the time was P.N. Bhagwati, a very active member of the Sathya Sai Central Trust, well known for keeping a damper on Sai Baba scandals over many years. As a number of us know personally, when the legal notes for this case are shown in eminent legal quarters where mature democratic principles much more cohere, the lawyers are disgusted! We shall share the as yet unpublished details of this case with responsible media, legal authorities or academic researchers.

3. See my Corrupt Indian Judges Stonewall Case Vs Sai Baba. In 1986, a case B. Premanand brought in the Andhra Pradesh High Court shows a judge’s clear violation of India’s secular legal system. Judge Y.V.Anjaneyulu (who just happened to be a Sai Baba devotee!) pronounced,

“An article or ornament materialized from air in a split second by the use of spiritual powers or otherwise cannot be said to be made, manufactured, prepared or processed within the meaning of section 11 of the Gold Control Act”

See also, Satya Sai Baba and the Gold Control Act, by B. Premanand, 1986

4. My reader may be curious (or could simply guess) as to the outcome of the following. The news article is from the Deccan Herald, May 11, 1999:

“Hyderabad Nov 4: Justice G Raghu Ram of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday admitted a writ petition seeking initiation of criminal prosecution against the doctors of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Puttaparthi in Anantapur district alleging malpractices regarding the transplantation of kidney”

So, for the sake of condensation, here, in the form of quotes, are some key pieces of information from it. Downloadable video footage is in the clickable references at the foot of this present blog.

Quotes

“The BBC’s cameras at Sathya Sai Baba’s ashram at Puttaparthi in South India catch the pomp, circumstance, opulence and the highly stage-managed atmosphere of the crowded Mahasivaratri festival, February 2004”

V.P.B. Nair, former Home Secretary in Sai Baba’s State of Andhra Pradesh at the time of the killings, is seen in the BBC television documentary on Sai Baba, The Secret Swami, (2004), where he says that the police killings were “cold-blooded murder””.

The Secret Swami confines itself to four areas:

  • Accusations down many years of Sai Baba’s serial sexual molestation of young males from various countries
  • His implication in police executions in his private quarters on June 6, 1993
  • Cover-up by him and the leadership of his worldwide organization, and as well as by successive Indian governments, of major criminal allegations
  • His faking of miracles”

“BBC producer Eamon Hardy and his team’s view was that serious questions are raised about India’s political maturity”.

“Focusing on one family meant no examination of anything like the full extent of the allegations. It also meant no examination of the multiple billions (that’s a ‘b’ not an ‘m’) that pour into the Sathya Sai Central Trust coffers from all over the world, or of financial scams by his administration (e.g., the selling of apartments which are sometimes later taken away from the paid up owners), which devotees blindly accept, as “tests of faith”. It meant no examination of Tony Blair’s and also the Conservative Party Whips suppression of over fifty British parliamentarians (an earlier list showing, as I recall 47, was incomplete) to raise Sai Baba-related issues in the House of Commons.  This was at a time when Blair wanted to placate the then Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee so as to win a contract for 66 jet fighters for India. The BBC had evidence from a former British diplomat that Vajpayee demanded of Blair that he cool down the activity concerning Sathya Sai Baba, whose long-time devotee Vajpayee was, and is. The urgency to win the deal was bi-partisan”. For futher information, see my article, Flag Follows Trade. Abetting Indian Government Corruption

“Other documentaries will need to look at the supposedly miraculously materialized jewelry which independent international assayers like the Queen of Denmark’s crown jeweler attest are faked

“Caught by the BBC cameras for all time, Sai Baba pretended to vomit up pure gold Siva Lingam. A few minutes later, he told his vast audience:

“Out of the stomach emanated Shiva Lingas of the weight  of three tonnes.  That’s the reason why some strain on  the face and the body”.

“BBC producers say that Sai Baba’s top leaders at first thought the documentary would present a ‘positive image’ of their guru and the works of his organization to the world. Hence the rare permission for the BBC to shoot at Sai Baba’s ashram”.

“The exposure by Denmark’s national broadcaster in its 2003 documentary Seduced (renamed Seduced By Sai Baba in the English language version by Australia’s national multicultural broadcaster SBS), seen by millions in Denmark, Norway and Australia – when the top Sai leaders in Denmark and Australia made unavailing threats of legal action – must still have haunted their minds”.

“Showing three zealous western devotees eccentrically rhapsodizing about Sai Baba fails to indicate his appeal to people of many cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. Filming eccentrics detracts from the serious purpose seen elsewhere in the documentary. It obscures the interest he has evoked in figures of great power (e.g., Bill and Hillary Clinton (more particularly Hillary), Al Gore, Mikhail and (the late) Raisa Gorbachev (a friend of mine informed me that Mrs Gorbachev told her that Gorbachev had a book of discourses by Sai Baba as his bedside reading). Confirmation of the Clinton connection and their readiness to meet Sai Baba, which was thwarted by security advisors on both sides, was given to me by my beloved friend, one of Sai Baba closest of all servitors, the great Indian author and newspaper Editor (the late) V.K. Narasimhan. The sheer penetration of Sai Baba’s influence is of real concern”.

“One learns that The U.S. minerals magnate James Sinclair got upset when Sai Baba officials announced sums of money that he had donated, so it is likely that his continuing donations are now not being disclosed. However, we know that he twice donated U.S. 600 million dollars. I shall have to see whether I can check the figure but I think Sinclair further donated $100 million for Sai Baba’s first water project, a sum announced by Indulal Shah (then head of the Sathya Sai Organization) at Sai Baba’s 70th birthday celebrations, when Shah listed every donor to the Water Project who had given at least one crore. U.S. devotee friends who knew Sinclair and his wife, (the late) Barbara Sinclair said that Sinclair was very shocked that his name would brought out”.

“Would many Indian politicians, notorious for their extreme corruption, dare expose the foreign goose that lays the (cosmic!) golden egg? Driving this question would have reinforced the documentary’s fundamental query about whether India is a mature democracy”.

“We see the hospital by English architect Keith Critchlow for Sai Baba (a long-time conduit to Prince Charles). Largely funded by Isaac Tigrett and inaugurated in 1991, this hi-tech heart and kidney hospital even outdazzles the many-splendoured architecture of the ashram. BBC cameras miss the names of other big donors, overseas and Indian, which are on a Roll of Honour in the hospital portico. Indeed, The Secret Swami fails to mention the billions that pour into the Sai coffers from various countries such as Australia, Canada, Hong Kong (indeed, the Chinese diaspora), Germany, Indonesia, Japan, UK, USA … Like the American James Sinclair (who often works from Canada), the precious metals speculator, alone has donated several hundreds of millions of dollars)”.

“To convince the most critical, the BBC needed demonstrations as sophisticated as those in the Danish documentary Seduced (a copy of which the BBC possessed) where the Danish magician Nils Krøjgaard exposes the deceptions involved”.

“Confronted by the BBC’s Tanya Datta, Murli Manohar Joshi, one of the most powerful ministers in the since-defeated right wing Vajpayee government, soon loses his temper, jabbing away with pointed finger at Ms Datta, accusing the BBC and people in England of plotting against Sai Baba, A.B. Vajpayee and P.N. Bhagwati (a key Sathya Sai Central Trust member and former Chief Justice of India). He arrogantly shouts at her:  “No, no, no… You don’t know the meaning of interviewing a minister in my capacity, as a minister of my stature””.

“So repeatedly evasive was Dr Michael Goldstein that the BBC team gained permission from BBC heads and legals to film him with hidden cameras. The BBC cleverly gets him to admit the correctness of the Rahm family’s report of his words. Unlike his archangelic namesake and just like Joshi, his finger repeatedly jabs at Tanya Datta as he snarls, blusters and fulminates. Seemingly in need of a child’s first dictionary, Dr Goldstein hurls the questions, “Transparency in what sense?” and “What do you mean by thorough investigation”? He says that his “heart and his conscience” know that the allegations of sexual molestation could not be true. But what about the heart and conscience of families and individuals around the world who give accounts of Sai Baba’s tragic harming of their boy children?”

“We see the President of India Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and Dr Manmohan Singh (now India’s Prime Minister) visiting Sai Baba on his birthday. The ‘secret swami’ does not have to go to Indian Presidents, Prime Ministers and other power brokers on all sides of politics. They go to him!”

“In exposing a dangerous and influential cult, The Secret Swami is plucky and perceptive. Canada’s national broadcaster CBC was waylaid by hundreds of phone calls and emails by Sai Baba devotees, both before and after the screenings of the documentary in Canada. The program host said on air “We stand by the professionalism of our BBC colleagues”.

Probed On Male Sex Abuse, Sai Baba Evicts BBC TV Team

Posted by Barry Pittard on August 2, 2007

In Puttaparthi, 2004, a BBC This World television team led by producer Eamon Hardy was evicted from the Sai Baba Ashram for asking about the worldwide male sex abuse allegations that face Sai Baba.Call for media and government investigation of Sathya Sai BabaSubscribe in NewsGator Online

goldiragingbullCaught by BBC hidden camera: an angry and shouting Sai Baba’s world chairman, Dr Michael Goldstein. He dismisses the BBC interviewer’s point about organization accountability and transparency and says of the worldwide serial sex abuse allegations against Sai Baba, “I would know it in my heart because I am what I am – a consummate professional. Can you understand that?”

Fortunately, before they were summarily thrown out, the BBC crew had shot close up valuable footage that clearly shows Sai Baba faking the miraculous production of a pure gold Shiva lingam or lingodbhava – a ‘cosmic egg’ from his stomach. He then – there are no signs of him faking this – faints. A few minutes later, in but one of his many statements that question the rationality of his devotees as well as his own, Sai Baba told his vast audience,

“Out of the stomach emanated Shiva Lingas of the weight of three tonnes. That’s the reason why some strain on the face and the body“.

The final film documentary was The Secret Swami, which has been screened in many countries.

BBC producers say that Sai Baba’s top officials at first thought, on their own entire assumption, the documentary would present a ‘positive image’ of their guru and the works of his organization to the world. Hence the rare permission for the BBC to shoot at Sai Baba’s ashram.

The ashram authorities extended highly guided tours to the BBC by Central Trust Secretary K. Chakravarthy and other leading officials, including the world head of the Sathya Sai Organization Dr Michael Goldstein of Covina, California, never before granted to a television corporation. In November or December 1997, Indulal Shah (then world head of the Sathya Sai Organization) told me that, over the years, a number of big overseas television companies had sought permission to shoot in the ashram but that ‘Bhagavan had not permitted it’.

A few days into the film shoot, the BBC asked for a comment on the worldwide allegations against Sai Baba of sex abuse of young males. The ashram authorities then peremptorily ordered them to leave, and Dr Goldstein (who was in Puttaparthi at the time) sent a prompt  instruction to all Sai Baba centres throughout the world that no-one must cooperate with the BBC.

Haunted By Other Media Exposure

Quite apart from other exposure in leading media, the exposure by Denmark’s national television and radio broadcaster DR can only have haunted the minds of Sai Baba and his officials. This was in its 2003 documentary Seduced (renamed Seduced By Sai Baba in the English language version by Australia’s national multicultural broadcaster SBS), seen by millions in Denmark, Norway and Australia. At this time, the top Sai leaders in Denmark and Australia made unavailing threats of legal action. In Denmark Sai Baba’s leaders Thorbjörn Meyer and Jørgen Trygved, hiring the top litigation talent in the country, took, between them, as many as ten court actions, all of which failed. In a scene reminiscent of Dr Michael Goldstein’s angry outbursts caught by the BBC’s hidden camera, Thorbjörn Meyer, one of the highest ranking of Sai Baba’s world leaders had, I am reliably informed, to be ordered out of the office of the distinguished head of Denmark’s top national television and radio Director of DR, Christian Nissen.

So much for such cultist. From his grave, the perennially and sorely relevant Sir Karl Popper must be desperately trying to write an update of The Open Society and Its Enemies.

Cost Of Cover Ups Can Far Exceed Hoped-for Benefits

Posted by Barry Pittard on July 23, 2007

A great irony of cover-ups is this – that once they have been exposed, the initiators of the abuses sustain a cost far greater than would have attended the prompt admission of the initial misdeeds – and genuine, exhaustive measures to address the abuses. Tragically, “cost” may be multiply defined – and in far from money terms alone.

                              sai-babas-symbol-of-world-faiths.jpg

And is there any Faith, major or minor, that is not sorely complicit in profound cover up of systemic sexual abuse?

                              host.jpg

The present repercussions of the Los Angeles Catholic Diocese afford us a ready example. Questions are being raised about whether there is enough – after insurance and money from other Orders have been paid – for even a rich Diocese’s coffers to afford such a vast pay-out. This is but one diocese, and yet many others face, or have already faced, a similar predicament. Is there even a single one (as a BBC television news report would indicate) in which such allegations have not been raised?

The Editorialist in The Boston Globe, July 17, 2007, writes:

“The Los Angeles and Boston money could have been spent on other important projects if Mahony and Law had adopted a zero-tolerance policy against abuse when it first became a national issue for the church in the mid-1980s.

Catholic dioceses across the nation, including Los Angeles, have initiated thorough policies to prevent future abuse, and Mahony apologized to the victims on Sunday. Yet new policies and regrets aren’t enough. In the eyes of victims, the scandal will never be fully resolved as long as bishops who put the interests of their fellow priests over the protection of children remain in positions of leadership”.

‘Or who shall ‘scape whipping’?

But is there any organization – anywhere – which has not covered up serious allegations? Can it be a good thing that when exposure of sexual abuse is discussed the Roman Catholic Church is so often the tarnished exemplar?

Another irony is that first whistleblowers are scapegoated but then public scapegoating can too easily turn on discretely ‘easy’ targets. And what more ‘easy’ than arguably the biggest religious monolith on the planet?

Does convergence of attention on a big institution help to prevent a much wider focus?

Naturally, of course, there is, at least, a chance for other organizations – before it is too late (if it is not already far too late!) for them to act without the courts forcing them to act – to learn from the fate of those churches or other organizations already strongly exposed?

Today, most societies are multicultural. Would it not make sense to take the broad approach, with not a single organization acting as though it, too, is unaffected? Or a wider public permitted to think that it has not its own accountability?

See, Robert Priddy’s article ‘Spiritual’ Abuse. Quote:

“One US lady who has been raped by a priest broke down in tears on worldwide TV News (22/7/2007) while telling how she was not believed by her very own church community, which ostracised her. This ‘turning a blind eye’ has been very common, also in the Sathya Sai Organization”.
