The Sathya Sai Organization’s Treatment of Dissidents: A Desertion of Ethics and Spirituality

Posted by Barry Pittard on April 23, 2012

Among other reasons, there is a much less reported reason for the success – at a very deep and far-reaching level – of the former Sathya Sai Baba devotees’ long and gruelling exposure in some of the world’s leading media, the UN, etc., of Sathya Sai Baba and his worldwide cult.

This success drew the response from non-Sai devotee family members, friends, neighbors, and school, college, university, professional, trade and other and associates of devotees. It also drew a strong interest from many government, civic, legal, religious and other institutions.

These third-party interests had no compunction in consulting the internet and in judging the critical offerings on the basis of commonsense and reason. Sai Baba ordered his devotees that they should have nothing to do with the internet. Some of them saw the almost daily attacks upon us, and how viciously set-upon and libeled have been those who have made great personal, financial and other forms of sacrifice in getting the abuses investigated by responsible world media, the United Nations, and so on

Profoundly blinded devotees would not hear a word said against their idol. He was God walking the earth. He could do as he pleased. One had to love him for his mystery. And not question his plethora of outright contradictions, failed prophecies and promises of healing or giving places in his colleges or university or apartments in the ashram, etc.

They would not listen to the heart-wrenching testimony of the parents and boys and young men from many countries whom Sathya Sai Baba sexually abused. They were utterly remiss in refusing all proper and normative processes of moral and legal accountability. We have powerful and repeated well-documented evidence of Sathya Sai Organization leaders turning away the many parents and others who have gone to them in great distress with their shocking accounts of Sai Baba’s sexual abuse of their boys and young men and, sometimes, by a small number of his college and university teachers. The organization’s history of ignoring the allegations is truly appalling. Sorely afflicted families from many countries have verified the Sathya Sai Organizations profound failure of duty of care and accountability and transparency.  The media, scholars, police and other institutions have attested the extreme resistance of the cult to investigation. Top world media have observed this imperviousness and obfuscation, including:  BBC, CBC (Canada), DR (Denmark), Salon.com (USA), SBS (all television), ABC (Radio Australia). In paper media – Times of LondonDaily TelegraphGuardian (UK), Marie Claire MagazineSalon.com,BT, Bild, Focus, Trouw, Speegelbield, Noordhollands Dagblad, Sokaren, GatopardoOttawa Citizen, Toronto Star, Vancouver Sun, Age, Australian Financial Review, West Australian (a major front page article by an award-winning journalist (Torrance Mendez) was pulled at the 11th hour!), Adelaide Advertiser, etc., …..

For the international Sathya Sai Organization, and for Sai devotees en masse, reason and commonsense stood for naught, much less ordinary human compassion. There was utterly cruel shunning of their former colleagues and friends, often of many years standing, whom they had, for every good reason, previously held in high regard. Overnight, as it were, we transformed into devils.

History can only deliver a harsh judgement of those members at all levels of the Sathya Sai Organization who spurned those who, with great pain and difficulty spoke forth the shocking facts which they, around the world, increasingly uncovered – broadly speaking from about 1999. They deserted their constantly iterated principles of: Truth, Right Conduct, Spiritual Love and Peace and (in a few cases, resorted to violence – a legal case about more recent – and most terrible –  examples is now underway).

Whereas, Sai Baba, both in discourses and via the high level world leadership of his cult, made sure that devotees did not discuss the many allegations of criminal conduct, non-devotees deeply concerned for those within the Sai fold DID consult the critical writings of David and Faye Bailey, Robert Priddy, Brian Steel, Glen Meloy, Hari Sampath, Conny Larsson, Sanjay Dadlani, Shirley Pike, Elena Hartgering, Alexandra Nagel, and others such as myself – and, in general, on websites such as:  http://ex-baba.com, http://www.saibaba-x.org.uk/, http://www.saiguru.net/english/

These readers had an invaluable asset: Their independence. For they were not caught up in the trammels of one of history’s biggest and far-reaching cults.

For a brief glimpse of one of a whole series of Sathya Sai cult madness reflecting the increasing decrepitude of Sathya Sai Baba, 2007, see:

Is Indian ‘Godman’ Sai Baba’s Moon Waning Still Further?

It is interesting to find highly unofficially-officially connected prominent Sathya Sai Baba devotees, including those who as students were long in his colleges and university, now enthusing about visions in the moon of their guru. That some get so extremely excitable as to support calls on the Internet for people’s experiences of Sathya Sai Baba induced moon visions, suggests that Sai Baba’s years of education have failed them. (Yes, by the way, their education was ‘free’ but many of their parents forked out a fortune in donations and supposedly incidental expenses).

Unless, of course, a moon vision of Sai Baba – when, as it turned out, clouds heavily obscured the moon!!! – is one of his greatest miracles.

The astronomical moon chart for October 2007 sustains Robert Priddy’s point in his article Deceiving ‘devotee’ makes bogus image of Sai in the Moon. He writes:

“it so happens that the moon on October 23 was not full but was still ’waxing gibbous’, as can be seen from the following image taken from the astronomical website http://stardate.org/nightsky/moon/ This shows the moon two days before full moon. Full moon did not occur until Oct 26 04:52, according to NASA“.

Every now and then major examples of Sathya Sai Baba’s worsening mental physical decrepitude would – quite enormously – aid us in far more widely establishing our good credentials in exposing him and his cult. We, whom the Sai forces went to great lengths to make seem mad and bad, were all too validly, and often sadly, exposing a terrible madness. The madness of the human mind in the grip of an extremely powerful charismatic cult.

Will Hollywood and Bollywood Dare To Take On The Cult Theme?

Posted by Barry Pittard on June 14, 2010

Through very separate channels, I have learnt that there have been discussions in different parts of the movie-making world about what approaches to scripting, venue, demographics, legal issues, and so forth, might best lend themselves to portraying the story of a guru so controversial and ‘larger-than-life’ as Sathya Sai Baba. Other charismatic cult leader names are mentioned, but Sathya Sai Baba is the biggest.

I earlier wrote:  Dare Songstress Nora Jones Touch Sai Baba? Sathya Sai Baba interests courted Jones (the daughter of the famous Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar, both of them his longtime devotees) to play the lead in a movie, oddly titled “My Guy”, and it will be interesting to get confirmation of the story that the project has foundered.

With the above thoughts in mind, as I was looking at a few articles and it struck me how many impactful stories, if followed to their roots,  there would be found in so much work of the more serious and competent critics of Sathya Sai Baba. Wide publics have a thirst for murder and mayhem. This does not lack on Sathya Sai Baba’s bloody trail. There is massive financial, political, and judicial and police corruption. But whether enough audiences can be persuaded to view often-tabooed and acutely distressing themes such as serial sexual abuse is a moot point. One of the top handful of former police chiefs in the world told me that he considered Sathya Sai Baba as plausibly the master criminal of the 20th century. (To reputed media or other serious investigators, I can share his name. He is in consultancy these days). We also know , again at first hand, that in various foreign services there are high-ranking diplomats (including at the level of Ambassador) who do not wish to see Sathya Sai Baba triumph, but in repeated cases they are told by their governments:  not to ‘rock the boat with India’.

The need for excellent movies on the contra cult topic is acute. It is one of the most crucially avoided topics by powerful political and religious  instrumentalities. Apart from common-or-garden cowardice, there is a great deal of misconceived liberalism about, with an excess of political correctness and misunderstanding at large in the matter of what, exactly, religious freedom consists. In the preface to Robert Priddy’s and my long article, we wrote, referring to a writer dear to me:

“The foes of the ‘open society’ (Sir Karl Popper’s term) are those who use its very openness to achieve their closed and devious ends. Sai Baba and his highly authoritarian and cultist organisation have such ends, which critics have tried to make known. Its foremost leaders silence all those who question it – and never face substantive criticisms. For the first time – after six years of pained and guilty silence – since hundreds of long-term devotees left it in disgust – the Sathya Sai Organisation has found it necessary to try to defuse the debate about Sathya Sai Baba’s alleged crimes, deceits and fraudulence. Dr. Venkataraman’s tendentious cover-up article expresses untruths which have long circulated within the cult, giving an opportunity to confront him with facts and truth”:  The Sathya Sai Organisation’s Deception and Propaganda Exposed

The cultic costs to society are catastrophic, Intelligent movies driven by more than just profits will need to draw together the two main needs: integrity AND profitability. No reason why creative people should languish for honest work. I notice, incidentally, that some movies, expectedly, are jumping, but crassly, onto the 3D bandwagon. But what better country than India to portray via the 3D medium. Imagine if Sir Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ had been made in 3D. Those who wish to see the most powerful exposure of cults need to be on the cutting edge, but not for its own sake.

The articles I had in view (although there are so many others) were:

David Bailey on Sathya Sai Baba (transcript from phone call) Excerpts with surprising facts that came to light when this great favourite of Sai Baba was phoned by Thomas Wiehe of Sweden – concerning the reasons why the Bailey’s rejected Sai Baba and all his works.

David Bailey’s disaffection in 1999 (phone conversation transcript & audio) On how Britain’s MI5 investigated David Bailey on account of protection of the Royal family, and the consequences for him, and other surprising facts.

Is Heat Too Much For Swami Nityananda, Under Fire By Sex Abuse Allegations?

Posted by Barry Pittard on April 2, 2010

In country after country, to explode vast naivety based on blind, unquestioning faith, it may take a great many major unmaskings of powerful, outwardly respectable, institutions, and  the charismatic leaders often associated with them.

Bangalore: Tainted godman Swami Nityananda has decided to step down from all posts of his ashram to lead a life of spiritual seclusion. This, after a controversial CD surfaced three weeks ago, showing him in a compromising position with a Tamil film actress.

The Swami, who has lakhs of followers in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, maintains his innocence. But his ashrams have been deserted ever since the scandals became public. His case comes up for hearing in Bangalore on Tuesday.

TAINTED GODMAN: Swami Nityanand says he wants to live a life of spiritual seclusion now.

I have decided to live a life of spiritual seclusion, for some indefinite time, to which the acharyas have agreed in principle,” said the tainted godman.

“In view of this, and to enable Dhyanapeetam to function with such amended agenda as may be necessary, I am resigning as the head of Dhyanapeetam and from all the trusts associated with it,” he added.

Democratic Societies Need To Face Issues On Cults

Posted by Barry Pittard on January 9, 2010

In my colleagues’ and my extensive experience in exposing the global Sathya Sai Baba cult and its leader, India’s most famous guru, whom successive Indian governments and institutions have long and corruptly protected, we have found a striking fact: governments, and indeed whole societies, fail to face the problem of cults.

The ‘answers’ of totalitarian regimes are of course to be repudiated at the outset. Indeed, in their authoritarianism, these closely resemble a great many cults, in any case!  In some sense, they can indeed be deemed cults. Charismatic, autocratic leadership, enforcement of group-think, devious propaganda, and punitive styles exercised against those who question are some characteristics that loom large.

In facing the problems posed by cults, our democratic institutions fail abysmally. Typically, our governments and societies fail because of certain mistaken and exaggerated notions about religious and other freedoms concerning beliefs. The channels of wide discussion, debate and action need to be opened up. Problems posed by muteness – or sometimes by smarmy and false appearances that all is sweetness and light – in the face of ‘political correctness’ need to be faced as a co-operative, rather than divisive, endeavour. We have found that many academic communities seriously offend, for they do not regard apostates as useful subjects for research. Still further, academies need to do a great deal of soul-seaching in facing problems of orthodoxy, in which academics care far more for their emoluments than for speaking out fearlessly.

For too long, it has been overlooked that many cults violate those very notions of freedom which we need, of course, to cherish and uphold.

Certainly, care needs to be exercised in defining what is and what is not a cult, and this level of information is best, in my view, arrived via deliberations across whole communities in consultation with each other. It will not help very much if we see cultism as offending against the canons of this or that mainstream religion. It is the mentality itself that needs to be understood and addressed.

What would hold communities back from engagement? Surely, it is fear. Often unconscious or unacknowledged. There needs to be serious thought about how whole communities can be brought to see that, by avoiding such threats to freedom, very broadly defined, they expose themselves to far greater problems. One cannot but think of examples such as the social paralysis, and the terrible failure to act in democratic interests, that existed in Germany at the time of the Weimar Republic, prior to the triumph of Nazism.

Sathya Sai Baba On Magnetism. Science or Sai-ence?

Posted by Barry Pittard on August 12, 2009

Note:  Thursday 7 October 2010.  But two areas in which the blindness of countless followers of Sathya Sai Baba is exposed are of science and history. His comments are extremely ill-informed, and sometimes so absurd as to beggar belief. Here is India’s chronically ailing would-be Avatar of Avatars, the figure who has told us that he will soon be traveling abroad! And who long ago said that in the last quadrant of his life he would be ruling the world!  And who said at the time of his 60th birthday that he would not hitherto show signs of physical ageing! This article from 2009 at ‘Call For Media and Government Investigation of Sathya Sai Baba’ drives home the silliness of it all.

————————————————————–

Sathya Sai Baba is wildly at odds with some of the most basic scientific facts. His jumping between physical and metaphysical notions, vague at best, clash with the physics being taught in his colleges and university – and in any respectable classroom.  He would even have it that gold is magnetic!

Sathya Sai Baba - from Sanathana Sarathi, April 2002, p. 123

Sathya Sai Baba – from ‘Sanathana Sarathi’, April 2002, p. 123

In actual fact, at this time, Sai Baba was having grave difficulties with his hip, which had to undergo a series of operations.

In an early blog of mine in 2007 – A Great Deceiver – Laughable But Still Dangerous – I wrote:  “Sai Baba’s many scientist followers must have to block their ears or don magical-thinking hearing aids when he opines on matters scientific. Some of his pronouncements are comic, to be sure. But the smile disappears from one’s face when considering that Sai Baba’s devotees number many leaders in the top power echelons of politics, government, the sciences, the judiciary, diplomacy, industry, finance, the arts, medicine, and so on.  He speaks, for example, of the nature of magnetism” …..

Since then, Sai Baba’s critical commentators have noted many past and current absurdities. A scholar, Brian Steel, strongly versed in Sathya Sai bibliography, has examined many of these, and I have selected and commented on a number of his writings in articles that contain the links to these extensive writings. Sathya Sai Baba has made very serious scientific and historical blunders.

For Steel’s detailed and sharply contextualized discussions, see

on Jesus Christ and Martin Luther .

and:

Sai Baba and Christianity. Some Observations (2002).

In the latter, Steel remarks on the “alarming nature of Sai Baba’s inventiveness”. This piece can instructively be read in concert with his:

On Jesus Christ and Martin Luther .

These grand pronouncements of Sai Baba are sometimes accompanied by cheering from the crowds he attracts – or, perhaps one may say, magnetizes. Those devotees who have a scientific education would, if their faith were to be sustained, need to make some procrustean mental shifts, performing conceptual acrobatics worthy of the adherents of Manichaeism.

Further Reading

See Jorge Reyesvera‘s point-by-point, rational reductio of Sathya Sai Baba’s terribly confused, sometimes downright contradictory, notions of magnetism:

The Omniscient Sai Baba’s Massive ignorance of Physics Exposed (I)

  • Be it noted that the source of the discourse that Reyesvera uses is from a provenance long-accepted by Sathya Sai Baba adherents everywhere. A comment on this article reads that this:  “discourse on magnetism by Sathya Sai Baba is from the  Mahasivarathri, 2002 … The following is an excerpt from the verbatim translation of the premsai website’s version of Sathya Sai Baba’s discourse on Mahashivarathri, 13-3-2002, which appears in an edited-down version in ‘Sanathana Sarathi’ – March 2002″.

Public Petition On Sathya Sai Baba (1)

There is a Public Petition calling for official probing of Sai Baba and his Sathya Sai Organization. (See website details at the end of this post).

The JUST (Just Seekers of Truth) petition is presented by a globally networked group of former followers of Sathya Sai Baba. In the ranks of both devotees and dissenters, there are those who say that Sai Baba is history’s most powerful guru. Some critics regard him as one of history’s arch deceivers – highly charismatic, highly flawed. He may brilliantly inspire good social uplift works, which is why so many earnest and good people are attracted to him, but profoundly conceals, along with his core servitors who keep an vice-like grip on his global organization, what is morally loathsome and criminal.

The Case of UNESCO’s Missing Media Advisory

Robert Priddy, retired academic in philosophy and the social sciences, University of Oslo, writes in his article

Sathya Sai Baba followers in education and science :-

“Not one head of any independent University in the world has endorsed Sathya Sai Baba educational ideals or programmes, and – as is well known – a branch of UNESCO withdrew from a planned educational conference under the auspices of Sathya Sai Baba at Puttaparthi once they had investigated what this involved. (See UNESCO’s warning on Sathya Sai Baba here)

Not one Nobel laureate is known to be a follower, as far as can be discovered. Incidentally, Sathya Sai Baba has been forwarded as a candidate for the Nobel Peace prize by the Indian Government, obviously without result, of course. He made clear his  hopes that he would receive it from Dr. Michael Nobel, a grandson of Alfred Nobel, but a person who the Nobel Committee has denounced. Does Obama Carry Sathya Sai Baba Photo In Wallet?

Posted by Barry Pittard on March 29, 2009

Whenever an incident such as a contact by Sai Baba personnel with this or that powerful figure (Barack Obama in this instance), there is a rejoicing. For O look ye and be of glad heart!  see how our Swami is influencing the world’s leaders …

From the end of last year, the saibababaofindia conglomerate and followers elsewhere have hailed this sort of situation. Anita Sharma, an organizer on a host committe, Pittsburgh USA, for Barack Obama in November 2008 managed to hand a photo of Sathya Sai Baba to Obama, telling him:

“HE is my spiritual guru and am Giving you for your guidance, good luck and protection”

At the end of her rhapsody, Mrs Sharma, triumpantly proclaims:

“Swami is with Obama and guiding him every step of the way. It augurs well for the whole mankind”

Little doubt many other humble souls have handed Barack Obama and other leaders some photo or other talismanic artifact  reflecting their image of the deity.  Leaders, whether out of politeness and charm – either natural or calculated or a mix of both – will of course, if there is not a security constriction, accept. This woman and her group were, after all, on an Obama committee.

Sai Saint Barack Obama?

Sai Saint Barack Obama?

Obama – charming? Polite? Has one not noticed? But a real McCoy Sai Saint – such as his now Secretary of State Mrs Hilary Clinton is said to have aspired to be? Indeed, at least he is a popular politician who likes to make symbolic gestures of outreach to many cultural groups in the community. It would have taken a hard heart to have resisted the bountiful heart of the enthusiastic Srimati Sharma …

But, in a matter of seconds, amid so many other duties, is he quite likely to fall in love with a photo of Sai Baba? The photo immediately below is from the saibabaofindia group – whose prime movers are very close to the ‘Lord’s Throne’ – so we may take it to be a genuine likeness of their rapidly ageing and increasingly non compos mentis guru. Anita Sharma hands Sathya Sai Baba Photo To Obama

A glance at Anita Sharma’s email (see below) is enough for anyone not a blind follower to get a glimpse of a particular phenomenon. It is one that occurs when the idolized guru figure is believed to have made an impact on this or that celebrated power figure. It is widely seen among worshippers of Sai Baba:  immediately mobiles, landlines and email systems run hot.  Ooo and ahhh – Look at the untold Grace our Guru is bestowing right round the world! Hilary Clinton wants to see Swami! Ohhh and hallelujah! and Jai Sai Ram! Did you know that I sat next to  Raisa Gorbachev in the Puttaparthi darshan and she told me that Michael Gorbachev keeps a book of Swami’s discourses by his bedside! Ooo ooo ahhh ahhh, I was at Puttaparthi when Swami sat Steven Seagal on a sort of throne next to Him. O what a Leela Swami plays! Ohooo, how wonderful it  was to see Goldie Hawn And Fergie (the) Duchess of York looking so adoringly at Swami – what a lovely role model she is!

Team. We had an opportunity to speak to him personally for few minutes.
I gave him Sai Baba’s picture, he took it and looked at it intensely and
Asked ‘who is this’? I told him HE is my spiritual guru and am
Giving you for your guidance, good luck and protection. He put the
Picture in the pocket of his coat and told me he will always keep it.
Few hours later, my husband got a call from Obama’s campaign manager
And security people as to what was that picture about because Obama kept
That picture in his wallet. My husband explained to them that the
Picture is our spiritual master and we gave him for his good luck,
Guidance and safety. They were ok with that response.
Few days ago, my husband was invited for Obama Victory celebration and the Same campaign manager said Dr. Sharma your guru’s picture has worked.
Enjoy these four pictures.
Swami is with Obama and guiding him every step of the way. It augurs
Well for the whole mankind.
