Dr Naresh Bhatia’s Testimony: Sathya Sai Baba Serial Sexual Abuser of Boys and Young Men

Posted by Barry Pittard on January 16, 2010

An Indian citizen, Dr Naresh K. Bhatia, publicly announced to a leading British newspaper, The Telegraph, that he had been a homosexual lover of Sai Baba.

For many years Dr Bhatia was prominent doctor in Sathya Sai Baba’s service – head of the Blood Bank at Puttaparthi and for six years head of the blood bank of the Sathya Sai Super Speciality hospital in Sathya Sai Baba’s vast medical establishment. He has since worked in a hospital in New Delhi.  A very popular Sai Baba-appointed speaker to both Indian and foreign groups, he wrote the widely read ‘Dreams and Realities’, published by Leela Press, the US publisher of many books on Sai Baba. After Dr Bhatia had spoken out, the organization stopped the book’s further sale. A note of proscription appeared in the official Sai newsletter, distributed worldwide.

Dr Bhatia told author and Daily Telegraph journalist Mick Brown that he had sexual relations with Sai Baba for 15 or 16 years. He revealed that Sai Baba had, over the years, sexual relations with “many, many” of his students, and had brutally raped a minor whom Dr. Bhatia examined afterwards and referred to a physician in Bangalore. He says he confronted Sathya Sai Baba, which led to his banishment. It is standard Sai handling for those who speak up.

In early 2004, BBC assistant producer David Saville, with whom for about seven months I was in contact during the making of ‘The Secret Swami’, told me that producer Eamon Hardy, who was then in India with the BBC investigative and camera crew, had just spent some time with Dr Bhatia. I may mention in passing that the sort of desperate comment typically emanating from Sai Baba apologist commentary is that there is no guarantee that the person contacted by a reporter was in fact THE Dr Bhatia.

He is not the only prominent figure around Sai Baba who has come out publicly and spoken frankly about his having sexual relationships with India’s most famous and powerful religious teacher. Another is Conny Larsson, former head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Sweden, who was a film star and more recently has worked in alcohol and drug rehabilitation in the Swedish prison system. For Swedish psychologist and ex-devotee Åsa Samsioe’s review of Larsson’s book ‘Behind the Mask of the Clown’, see HERESee ex-head of the Norwegian Sathya Sai Organization Robert Priddy’s review HERE.

Dr Bhatia’s case is one of many in which, from the moment an individual speaks out, a process of Sai demonization commences. They have given decades of service and won respect for the quality and dedication of their service. Lo, overnight, Sai Baba and his servitors, quickly followed by members at large, pronounced dissenters to be devils, Judases, etc.! In the Sathya Sai Organization, there is no process of accountability for those who stand accused. Indeed, this stark fact is one of its greatest vulnerabilities, in those parts of the world which cherish proper justice processes, of this global organization.

As is commonly seen in accounts of apostates from many other cults, former devotees have not been spared that hatred, anger and denunciation which turn upon those who have stood forth, at tremendous cost to themselves and in the interests of truth. Thousands have heard Sai Baba say that the Sathya Sai Organization is divine, and the instrument via which he will transform the planet before he leaves in circa AD 2022. Its behaviour in denouncing leave-takers, and covering up many scandals including killings in Sai Baba’s bedroom bares it to stark exposure. It resoundingly falsifies such claims at the outset.

Former devotees have already had to handle, after years of intensely loving devotion and service, the immense sense of spiritual betrayal. Their lot is untold execration, harassment, distortion of their words and motivations, defamation and libel.

In correspondence, Dr Bhatia told me that he still cannot shake off his belief that Sai Baba is Divine. Clearly, in his case, and in that of his devotees at large, spiritual detachment, which Sai Baba forever advocates, is notably missing. The grip is vice-like.

Dr Bhatia told me that Sai Baba has sexually abused very many of his (Sai Baba’s) students. Dr Bhatia wrote further that the threat to life is very real, especially that of a boy whom he professionally believed to have been badly sodomized by Sai Baba. He had the boy sent to a physician in Bangalore, who arrived at the same professional diagnosis  about the presentation, including serious injuries.

I asked whether all that he had testified he could corroborate in a properly conducted court of law. He assured me that this was so. In fact, many former devotees around the world who are closely conversant with the facts in their experiences have been ready to testify.

Dr Bhatia mentioned that he had reason to fear for the well-being of the young person and modified his earlier public stance. His public statement can be seen in David and Faye Bailey’s seminal document ‘The Findings’ (circa late 2000). This husband and wife were unusually prominent Sai Baba emissaries. See my article:  Reply to a Sathya Sai Devotee’s Note re: David and Faye Bailey. They have recounted that, as they moved around the world representing Sai Baba in his official centers round the world, parents of abused young males, and sometimes those who claimed Sai Baba (and in some cases certain of his servitors) sexually abused them, would come to them with harrowing accounts of sexual abuse. These depicted a very different Sai Baba – one who had long engaged in actions that were criminal and hypocritical in the extreme.

Dr Bhatia also clarified a misunderstanding for me. It had earlier been said that this boy was seven years old when very badly sexually abused by Sai Baba. He confirmed to me that the boy was not seven seven years old but was then in Level 7 at Sai Baba’s school at Puttaparthi. He has also confirmed all the above to my fellow Australian Stephen Carthew, former spiritual coördinator for South Australia in the Sathya Sai Organization, who visited Dr Bhatia in New Delhi 2000. He wrote to me that: “I found Dr Bhatia delightful and most welcoming, notwithstanding the bind he is in. His own ambivalence regarding the spiritual nature of his Guru, and the pressures coming from many sources to keep quiet, makes it difficult for him to do more than tell his story when asked. Certainly, he believed he was threatened and harassed during his rushed departure from Puttapaparthi, after criticizing Sai Baba to his face.” For an update and the link for an Australian Broadcasting Corporation documentary featuring Stephen Carthew, see: Stephen Carthew, A Voice of Testimony From Australia, On The Dangers of Cults

Robert Priddy’s comment on the Bhatia case

Note: At the time referred to in his note, Robert Priddy was head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Norway. “Ours” refers to himself and his wife, Reidun Priddy. Priddy was a careful diarist and he has begun releasing scans of his diaries.

“In 1999/2000 a lady friend of ours – Anne-Irene – had close connections with ‘insiders’ at Prashanthi Nilayam, especially Mr.& Mrs. Ratan Lala and the US lady called Veronica who ran the foreigners’ canteen. Anne-Irene was present when Dr. Naresh Bhatia was discredited and made to leave his post as head of the Blood Donation Unit at Sathya Sai Baba’s big hospital in Puttaparti. She reported how rumours flew in all directions, as is always the case when such events occur at the Sai ashrams, for there is always a rigid clamp-down on anyone who knows facts from telling the truth. As usual, those unsupported rumours were set going and allowed to flourish with ‘no comments’… especially that Dr. Bhatia had been caught having sexual relations with nurses at the hospital, and that this had been going on with other young ladies over whom he was in a position of authority. Dr. Bhatia, who is married with children, wrote a very flowery and adulatory book called “Dreams and realities face to face with God” (which reflects his belief fully). It was immediately taken off sale at the Sathya Sai Baba Book & Publications Trust, and it was withdrawn and all existing copies were remaindered by the publisher (Jack Scher – since deceased – another egocentric millionaire follower of Sai Baba who had so to speak ‘bought into’ a verandah place by setting up a publishing co. for Sai books in the US called ‘Leela Press’).  V.K.Narasimhan was instructed to publish the disclaimer about Dr. Bhatia in Sanathana Sarathi”

Sathya Sai Baba Student Communications On Sex Abuse

Posted by Barry Pittard on January 10, 2010

As a Sathya Sai Baba Exposé colleague of Robert Priddy, former head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Norway, and retired academic philosopher of the University of Oslo and former researcher in social science at the Institute for Social Research, Oslo, I endorse his comment, below, which he has just noted in his frequently updated blog: Sathya Sai Baba Deceptions Exposed (Exposing major deceits by guru Sathya Sai Baba in India, incl. murders cover-up …). His extensive, highly-organized website is: http://www.saibaba-x.org.uk . The site notes that it “showcases the views of a group of former Sathya Sai Organisation members (ex-devotees) with full rights to expose the organisation that deceived them”.

As always, I too (as do other former devotees from a wide array of social, cultural and professional backgrounds) stand ready to so testify in any proper court of law and also in regard to respected media, as has been the case with testimonies by many former devotees from around the world. For example: BBC, CBC, ABC, DR, SBS, The Times of London, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, India Today, Salon.com, Gatopardo, The Age, Financial Times (Australia), West Australian, Vancouver Sun, The Ottawa Citizen, Toronto Star, BT, Trouw, Spiegelbeeld, Noordhollands Dagblad, Focus, BILD …

See: Exposure of Sathya Sai Baba. Media Source List

Organized former devotees have also submitted much evidence at high levels of UNESCO. See:

The Case of UNESCO’s Missing Media Advisory

BBC Caught UNESCO Head Bowing To Indian Government

I may add that those former devotees who have spoken out over the years have often done so despite major disruption to their lives, and in the face of almost unimaginable personal attack, libel and disinformation Sathya Sai Baba forces. This includes studied misinformation given by leaders to rank-and-file members of the international Sathya Sai Organization. The cost in time and effort has been formidable, but has been appropriate in the face of – indisputably – one of the most profound religious duplicities and cover ups in history.

‘Spiritual’ Politicking Sathya Sai Baba Style. An India-UK Nexus

Posted by Barry Pittard on November 5, 2009

After our urgent, coordinated actions, the British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife Cherie were – indeed within minutes – prevented from visiting Sai Baba  at Whitefield near Bangalore. They were about ten minute’s drive away from his ashram when, heeding our representations, British High Commission officials were able to dissuade Blair and his wife from visiting Sathya Sai Baba.

Tony Blair and Sathya Sai Baba: The Meeting That Was Averted With Minutes To Spare

A photo call, with results expected to be flashed round the world, was thus averted. The Blair visit to Bangalore occurred at an historic watershed period for the Sathya Sai Baba movement.  He and his global sect was under tremendous scrutiny – very difficult for a group whose top officials act with considerable secrecy and suppression.

In the British House of Commons, questions about Sathya Sai Baba were raised  (November 2000).  This was maintained in early 2002:

‘Sai Baba and sexual abuse of children’ no. 886
That this House, mindful of the many accounts and witness statements of the sexual abuse of the male children of devotees by the Indian guru, Sai Baba, calls upon the Foreign Secretary to use the Travel Advice for India page of the Foreign Office Website to issue guidance to British families intending to visit the Ashram of Sai Baba about the possible danger to their male children of individual audiences with the guru.
Source: UK Parliament, 26.02.02 House of Commons

Major, researched stories appeared in India Today (October 2000), Daily Telegraph (December 2000), and Times of London (August 2001).

Internal crises erupted within the Sathya Sai Organization. In Sathya Sai centers in various parts of the world, members discovered among their own local memberships terrible evidence from respected, longtime members that all was far from well. Some centers disbanded altogether. Increasing attention focused on many accounts of Sai Baba’s sexual abuses of boys and young men, implication in the ashram, local, state and central government cover up of killings in his bedroom, and other monumental spiritual betrayals. Many of its members left the Sathya Sai Organisation, including some of its most respected leaders. See:

‘Spiritual’ Politicking Sathya Sai Style

There was a concerted plan to bring Sathya Sai Baba to the attention of the world. From various sources we were able to piece together information about some of the survival strategies of Sathya Sai Baba and his core, high-level servitors. for example, we learnt that his top leaders in India and the UK, along with the Indian and British governments (most notably the Foreign and Commonwealth Office), planned as follows:

  • To ensure a meeting between Hon. Tony Blair MP and Sathya Sai Baba during the British Prime Minister’s Bangalore visit in the first week of January 2002
  • To ensure that a bevy of Indian and UK journalists asked him and his wife questions about his experiences of Sathya Sai Baba
  • To get the then Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a publicly professed devotee of Sai Baba, to speak to Blair personally about Sai Baba, which he did at Chequers on November 12, 2001 when he visited the UK.
  • To obtain Vajpayee’s signature to a pre-written letter vociferously defending Sai Baba, co-signed by then Chief Justice of India, P.N. Bhagawati, former Chief Justice Ranganath Mishra, at that time Chairperson, National Human Rights Commission of India, and Dr Najma Heptulla, former President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Council, former Speaker Lok Sabha, and Union Minister. See:

Open Letter to Prime Minister of India, Hon. A.B. Vajpayee. By Barry Pittard, Australia, former Lecturer, Sri Sathya Sai College of the Arts, Science and Commerce, Whitefield, via Banglalore, Karnataka

  • To publicise this letter, for example on the UK Sathya Sai Organisation’s website (it was later taken off)
  • To get Tony Blair, via direct personal pressure from former Indian Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee, to curb British parliamentary efforts critical of Sathya Sai Baba.

Sai Baba, Kubla Khan, Citizen Kane, Bill Gates et alia

Posted by Barry Pittard on June 7, 2007

Note:  3 December 2010.  In the aftermath of Sathya Sai Baba’s 85th birthday celebrations, here is a 2007 article which shows that the incredible opulence that surrounds him has been in the building for a long time now.

………………………………………………………………………………………

In the director-writer-actor Orson Welles’s great movie classic Citizen Kane, one can, it is true, note certain differences between the U.S. newspaper proprietor William Randolf Hearst

and Welles’s and Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s creation Charles Foster Kane. For decades, the differences have been fought over – fiercely. Nonetheless, both were fabulously wealthy, gigantically egocentric – and corrupt. They splurged incredibly on their domiciles. As does Sathya Sai Baba -See: Sai Baba’s Birthday. Vast, Costly Pomp and Ceremony

(Microsoft founder, Bill Gates’s humble little shack – dubbed by some wag as: Xanadu 2.0. No zoo there yet, but who knows? – with the true coming-of-age of Robotics something cyber-‘animal’ might be managed. Although Sai Baba’s imperial fiat has gone out to his devotees that they must have nothing to do with the Internet, his devotees, from top to bottom, are using it extensively. So much for the notion ‘Guru is God’).

In naming the fictive Kane’s dream home on sprawling acres, Xanadu, Welles and his writer Mankiewicz thought – perhaps inevitably – of the fabulous city of the 13th Century Mongolian emperor, Kubla Khan (see portrait above) and of the English Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s fittingly eccentric and exotic poem known to millions, whose first line runs:

In Xanadu did Kubla KhanA stately pleasure-dome decree
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea
So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round :
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree ;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,

Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.

Today’s Would-be ‘Emperor’ of India and Then the World

Kane in Florida, like Hearst at San Simeon in California, was absolute King of his castle. But there is a virtual Emperor in India – Sathya Sai Baba.

But even Randolph Hearst (as perhaps a modern-day media buccaneer Rupert Murdoch) might have blushed a wee bit for shame to hold such sway with the big end of town as Sathya Sai Baba has long done with India’s power brokers, irrespective of what political party is in power. Sai Baba (and I have seen him up close a great many times), who long ago learnt not to blush, is arguably India’s and history’s most famous – and infamous – guru.

How the stupendous splurger Sai Baba can ever say the name of Mahatma Gandhi, modern India’s simple-living ‘father of the nation’, without blushing is one of his greatest miracles!

Hearst would refer to his establishment as “the ranch”. Hugh Heffner, the ‘soft’ pornography magnate and publisher of Playboy Magazine had built his Playboy Mansion, of which  the writer John Marshal has observed  that  driving through its gates is “like being misdirected into the back entrance of a public zoo”. The zoo atmospheric reminds that Hearst’s estate included a zoo – then the world’s largest. The narrator in Citizen Kane speaks of Kane having the largest zoo since Noah. See USA Weekend LINK.

India’s Fabulous Top Guru Sai Baba. More Emperor Than King

But then see the article:

The Decline and Fall of the Showman Empire. Posted by Barry Pittard on July 10, 2007

One wonders why Sai Baba has not included a gee-wizzo zoo. Perhaps it would be a counter-distraction, because everybody is supposed to have their eyes trained on Sai Baba (it is called ‘darshan’, and his devotees spell it with a capital ‘D’. Instead of gazing at one’s navel, one gazes at the guru). However, one Indian man sitting next to me at a Sai Baba ‘darshan’ described Sai Baba’s setup to me as “a national circus”.

Vastly Costly Monuments Glorifying Sai Baba

His splashy-colored and sometimes vast buildings rise up at enormous cost. Sathya Sai Baba’s exchequer owes to vast donations to his Central Trust via his powerful organisation spanning more than 150 countries, and not least to the donations of the extremely wealthy – like James Sinclair, James Sinclairthe Canadian cable and minerals magnate, Isaac Tigrett the American founder of the Hard Rock Café and House of Blues, the Rai family in India in steel and technology, and an astounding number of other hugely wealthy and influential individuals and families from many countries. Rediff News, July 06, 2005, reported:

“The Andhra Pradesh-based Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust is the largest recipient of foreign contributions. The Sathya Sai Trust received Rs 95 crore (Rs 950 million) during 2003-04″.

This figure – which is well over US $20 million – is but the officially declared one and does not account for contributions of those foreigners who donate when they are in India. One can observe how at Sathya Sai Baba’s establishments at Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh, and Whitefield, Karnataka, in South India, the Indian and foreign mega business fraternity swap business cards – within what devotees regard as the so-called Holiest of Holy precincts! – and thereafter mutually thrive. At the Puttaparthi temple, on June 6, 1993) police executions took place in Sai Baba’s bedroom, with his close proximity and command of the situation. See my article, at LINK, which contains a further link to a video clip of the BBC The Secret Swami television interview with former Andhra Pradesh Home Secretary V.P.B. Nair saying that the slaying was “absolute cold-blooded murder”).

It is easy to see that far wider national and international economic and political forces are at play, and that it is little wonder how successive Indian governments both State and Central have been loathe to ‘kill’ a goose that lays an incredible number of golden eggs.

Twin Palace. Sai Baba Lives Here

Efforts to Globalize Sathya Sai Baba with World Radio Station

Sai Baba controls with an iron hand the international Sathya Sai Organization. This powerful cult has been found by some of the world’s top media like the BBC, Times of London, Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, and in other countries, as well as UNESCO, the U.S. State Department and other institutions to be extremely hard to investigate or act against. His second most senior aide is its deputy chairman, who, as head of Sai Global Harmony, is his ‘minister of propaganda’, Dr G. Venkataraman, one of the progenitors of India’s atomic bomb, as was Sai Baba’s previous close aide, the late Dr S. Bhagavantam – sometimes called ‘the father of the Indian atomic bomb’ – as was his present staunch devotee, the President of India, Dr A.J. P. Kalam, who writes flowery  panegyrics to Sai Baba, as did the last Indian Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Sai Global Harmony broadcasts, in affiliation with WorldSpace International Satellite Radio Service, 24/7 to many countries. With a behind-the-scenes corporate-style, assisted by the billions of funds that pour from many countries into the Sathya Sai Central Trust, the declared aim is to penetrate to every corner of the globe.

Government Inaction on Powerful Cults

A vital question will be whether politicians in democratic countries will be capable of distinguishing between the issue of freedom of religion and the issue of cults that decidedly do not, whatever may be their rhetoric, respect democracy.

Followers Believe Sathya Sai Baba Will Rule World

Former monstrous Ugandan dictator Idi Amin (about whom Sai Baba and G. Venkatarman have warmly recollected, See LINK) only imagined himself to be the ‘Last King of Scotland’ but Sai Baba takes all India for his domain, not to mention the world, which he has long said (it is one of his myriad of broken promises) he will travel to and bring to his feet, after he has “set (his) own back yard (India) in order” and before he dies in AD 2022. Given India’s enduring tragedy – despite her superpower aspirations – he had better get a bit of a wriggle on!

Poor Hearst, Jackson, Gates, Murdoch, et alia! For Sai Baba is an Emperor, who has Indian power brokers in his thrall irrespective of their party or religious affiliation. None – except a rare and tremendously courageous individual like B. Premanand, India’s famous “guru buster” – dare  take him on in India. See BBC story HERE.

For Successive Indian Governments, Sathya Sai Baba Is ‘goose that lays the golden eggs’

Indian local, central and state governments, often incredibly corrupt and incompetent, are able to watch while the more efficient Sai Baba and his massive organization get social welfare projects done. Drawn out of donations from some 150 foreign countries, his revenue is prodigious. India’s profoundly compromised ruling elites would no more sneeze at that country’s donations from Bill Gates, yet another of history’s outstanding buccaneers, than it would at the taxable revenue pouring into the Sathya Sai Central Trust.

The shadow of the dome of pleasure
Floated midway on the waves ;
Where was heard the mingled measure
From the fountain and the caves.
It was a miracle of rare device,
A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice ! …..

….. That with music loud and long,
I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome ! those caves of ice !
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware ! Beware !
His flashing eyes, his floating hair !
Weave a circle round him thrice,

And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.
