The Mystification of Sathya Sai Baba Devotees

Posted by Barry Pittard on August 30, 2011

Recently,  Sathya Sai Baba devotees have suffered terrible shocks. To devotees with any reasoning capabilities intact, no amount of Sathya Sai Central Trust’s spin-doctoring will do.  It is little wonder that some leaders in the Sathya Sai Organization with more developed democratic tendencies have long fell foul of those such as Indulal Shah. The difficulty here was always there was the thought that Shah and other leaders, however autocratic and unpleasant their manner, were, after all, but mouth-pieces for Sathya Sai Baba. Little did they know …..

Many followers were forced to consider that those servitors, handpicked by Sathya Sai Baba himself, have been party to extremely unaccountable, poor explanations surrounding his sickness and death. They learn, if they did not already know, or else had forgotten, that he foretold that he would die circa 2022 AD. It could not be lost on at least some devotees that many of his prophecies and promises did not materialise. Such anomalies were many.

In the extraordinary confusion of the recent events, the Central Trust tried to explain matters away. However (most sensibly from their point of view) they quickly reverted to their old ruse of saying nothing, and occasionally almost nothing.

What happens commonly with psychological trauma happens, of course, with Sai Baba followers, too. The victims go into psychological denial more intense than they have ever experienced.  After ignoring the extensive documentation of former devotees and other critics of Sai Baba for over a decade, devotees at last got to learn of Sathya Sai Baba’s incredible secrecy, and that of his leaders.

To be sure, what former devotees and other critics of Sathya Sai Baba did not know was the incredible hoarding of billions in various currencies and gold, silver and precious gems, and many luxury goods, the latter of which have been mouldering away in a manner not entirely unlike, I have suggested, poor Miss Havisham’s circumstances in Charles Dickens’ novel ‘Great Expectations’: When Perfumes Reek: Lavish Scents, Shampoos etc., Among Sai Baba Secret Treasure Hoard. Posted by Barry Pittard on July 24, 2011

The events leading up to Sai Baba’s death, the death itself, and the aftermath of infighting about the succession by his chief servitors, became known throughout India – namely, Satyajit (alias Yatish Salian, Sai Baba’s longtime paramour and favourite), V. Srinivasan, and R.J.Ratnakar

Satyajit (Yatish Salian), Sathya Sai Baba Favorite

about all of whom there is much mystification among many Sathya Sai Baba devotees. See:  Sathya Sai Trust’s R.J.Ratnakar – Long Police Interrogation. Intensive Investigations Continue. Posted by Barry Pittard on June 26, 2011.

The events were so newsworthy that a media which – unlike the international press to whom a number of us long ago convinced of the worthiness of our accounts of Sathya Sai Baba  –  has almost entirely to the last press baron failed to expose Sathya Sai Baba and his authoritarian cult.

The Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust’s R.J.Ratnakar, Sai Baba’s Nephew. Effective Sai Trust Supremo.

Here is the earlier type of presentation that Ratnakar would now clearly like the public to forget all about. It is a statement a prominent spokesman for Trustees and the Council of Management,V.Srinivasan, chairman of WS Industries, Chennai, South India, made on the same day as the Central Trust made its tediously waffling major public statement, couched verbatim, in this portion, in both cases:

“In the light of baseless, irresponsible and false accusations of defalcation of gold, valuable artefacts and even money, it is emphatically stated that the accusations are wholly untrue and it is believed these have been engineered by certain vested interests”. (Economic Times article:  ‘Baba had no successor in mind: Trustees, election for Sai Trust chairman next week’, Apr 28, 2011, 09.53pm IST).

NOTE:  Writers on the Sathya Sai saga, like Robert Priddy, Brian Steel and myself have long exposed the tissues of lies that Sai Trust officials spin to devotees at large and to others. But what devotees were prepared to use their critical faculties in the least? Very few indeed. Against all their knowledge down the years that we were not (as Sai Baba said of us)Demons’, ‘Judases’, and that we had paltry money motives, they mindlessly preferred to listen to the deceitful avowals of leaders such as Indulal Shah, Dr Michael  Goldstein – see: Sathya Sai Baba Chief, Dr Goldstein, Explodes. “I am the consummate professional” (See Film Clips), Dr G. Sathya Sai Baba and Deception: Does Truth Catch Up In The End?

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 5, 2011

Slowly but steadily – although both greatly aided AND greatly impeded by the internet – the awful facts about Sathya Sai Baba have been able to spread far and wide.

Aided, of course, because no other communication method in history has had such impact on transmission. But impeded because, although the internet can spread the facts, it is also a ‘wild west’ in which consummate liars as well as those determined to speak the truth can reach the world. And, what is more, get away with it. See my second last post: Sathya Sai Baba’s Mastery of ‘The Big Lie’

The internet is both main street and back alley. Here, the blackguard can shoot down and murder or cripple those with a lifetime of integrity and service to their communities. It can make lies to seem truth, and truth to seem lies.

Until he died in January 2005, Glen Meloy was my great friend and collaborator in exposing Sathya Sai Baba and his cult. By the time he left the Sai fold, Glen had been a deeply committed devotee of Sathya Sai Baba. He was a tireless worker and very well-known to a number of Sai Baba top leaders, such as Elsie and Walter Cowan, Dr John Hislop, Bob Bozzani, Dr Michael Goldstein, Dr William M. Harvey, and many in the rank-and-file, of the United States Sathya Sai Organization. See: Timothy Conway Ph.D – On ‘The Hislop Letters’

The last quadrant of Glen Meloy’s life is tremendously moving for those who know it. He was one who continued to speak the truth no matter how greatly he was calumniated. The way in which members of the Sathya Sai Organization have treated those who question and reveal will forever remain a terrible indictment of cultic blindness and suppression of conscience.  Only the slow unfolding of historic revelation can validate those who do not compromise their conscience, but who would rather live truth than go about singing its praises in hymns and preachments. My profoundly inadequate tribute to Glen is here: Glen Meloy (“Standing up for truth and goodness”) – In Memoriam

The fact will always remain, and the worldwide Sathya Sai Organization has never faced it. Many individuals whom  (then) fellow devotees esteemed for having qualities of truthfulness, kindness, service and decency, were suddenly, from virtually the moment they spoke out or tried to assist those raising heart-rending accounts, almost overnight, deemed to have become demons, Judases, and either mad or bad.  See: Sathya Sai Baba condemns his critics as “demons” and: The Sathya Sai Organisation’s Deception and Propaganda Exposedby Robert Priddy and Barry Pittard. Part One Part Two Part Three

The following is a small excerpt of a piece Glen wrote in helping to surface the story of Sharon Purcell, of Tustin, California (now deceased, who had been a devotee of 32 years, and also well-known to many in the United States Sathya Sai Organization . More about Mrs Purcell and her son Sathya can be found in the articles:

My Life As Sathya Sai Baba’s Prophecy, by Sathya (Satya) Purcell. Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6

Will Sai Baba Keep Hal Honig Smiling?

NOTE. I have elsewhere written:

“For Satya Purcell, the Hal Honig-led trip to see Sai Baba was decisive in the most negative way. He had been named from birth by Sai Baba, and was devoted since his earliest years. His mother, Sharon Purcell, was close to major figures in establishing Sai Baba’s fame in the West, such as the wealthy husband and wife Walter and Elsie Cowan, and Dr John Hislop. He came away profoundly alienated, and his belief that Sai Baba was the Divine in human form was shattered, as it became for his mother too, and a great many others from various countries and cultures who, over the years, have felt profound ethical and spiritual betrayal. A number of the youths on the trip lost their faith in Sai Baba, and confided that he had sexually abused them. They also relate seeing mistakes by Sai Baba that showed that he was faking his ‘miracles’ of materialization”.

Sharon Purcell’s personal story, by Glen Meloy (July 2001)

….. As if the molestations were not enough, the infamous shootings at Puttaparthi occured while Sathya and his Mother were still there and young Sathya remembers vividly having to jump out of the way when they were still sweeping the blood from the temple later that morning. Honig’s group of boys had been allowed to be on the verandah for morning darshan.

Unfortunately, Sharon said she mistakenly believed at the time that Sai Baba was merely re-channeling the sexual energies of the boys into spiritual energy and she continued to believe in Sai Baba for 7 more years.

This continued until May 2000 when a close female friend told her a pathetic and tragic story of how her husband had his genitals oiled by Sai Baba in 1968. She told Sharon about all the negative stories concerning Sai baba on the Internet and  how her husband, who was an intimate friend of Iris and Howard Murphet, had been asked by Sai baba to go back to the USA to study and get all the necessary credentials and experience to be Baba’s personal airplane pilot.

This came as a shock to the young man, who at the time was thinking about becoming an accountant. But because this was a direct request from God Almighty, the young man spent thousands of dollars and for 10 years invested all his energies and money into becoming qualified to be the personal airplane pilot for Sai baba.

When he returned to India, he was on the front line trying to tell ssb that he had done what Sai Baba had requested and that he was now returning to be his pilot. After completely ignoring him, the day finally arrived when he stood up and waved all of his credentials at Baba and then came the incredulous words from baba’s mouth…….”WHAT CAN I SAY?????………….NO PLANE!”

Sharon was in shock for several days after hearing that story and then to confirm what she had heard, she called another close male friend who revealed to her that Sai Baba had also molested him. She told him that she no longer believes in Sai Baba and that she wanted him to tell her exactly what Sai Baba had done to him over 30 years prior. He told her that Baba had molested him and had ejaculated into his mouth after taking Padanamaskar. It was such a disgusting story that she immediately called her female friend married to the would be airplane pilot and her friend also instantly stopped believing in what they both now call a monster.

Avatar of Deception: Sathya Sai Baba. 85, But Says He Will Rule World

Posted by Barry Pittard on November 27, 2010

As the international Sathya Sai Organization knows to its immense cost (both financially and morally), many, including foremost leaders, have left, having been able to analyse for themselves the many and terrible distortions of fact that Sathya Sai Baba and his core servitors have generated.

Many shockingly suffering individuals and families around the world have needed to perform no analysis at all, since they have been prime victims of Sathya Sai Baba’s and his officials’ grave misconduct.

For those still in the throes of leaving the Sai cult, it is a time of profound emotional, intellectual and social upheaval. These afflictions cannot be expected to go away quickly. Those of us who have stuck at the job of exposure commonly find that leave-takers of the organization take a year or two, and sometimes much longer, to collect their thoughts in a consecutive way. Those who make a quick matter of transition to replacement life styles often say that they have ‘moved on’. There is a whole psychological literature that would suggest they have not, and that, in fact, by not looking carefully at what has happened in their lives, they have gone into an mental and emotional denial state. Some simply go from one cult into another or back to some ‘safe’ conservative haven, and then come to grief yet again, and wonder why.

Those who, however, wish to reflect on their experience, and look at some key themes that are under question, may find useful a detailed focused article such as ‘The Sathya Sai Organisation’s Deception and Propaganda Exposed’. The authors are Robert Priddy, co-founder and former head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Norway, and myself, Barry Pittard, former lecturer at Sathya Sai Baba’s Whitefield College (via Bangalore, South India). This four-part article quotes liberally from Dr G.Venkataraman, deputy chairman of the international Sathya Sai Organization, and director of Sathya Sai Baba’s international radio propaganda service, ‘Sai Global Harmony’.

Part OnePart ThreePart Four

The foes of the ‘open society’ (Sir Karl Popper’s term) are those who use its very openness to achieve their closed and devious ends. Sai Baba and his highly authoritarian and cultist organisation have such ends, which critics have tried to make known. Its foremost leaders silence all those who question it  – and never face substantive criticisms. For the first time – after six years of pained and guilty silence – since hundreds of long-term devotees left it in disgust – the Sathya Sai Organisation has found it necessary to try to defuse the debate about Sathya Sai Baba’s alleged crimes, deceits and fraudulence. Dr. Venkataraman’s tendentious cover-up article expresses untruths which have long circulated within the cult, giving an opportunity to confront him with facts and truth

Despite Sai Baba and his worldwide organisation’s constant claims to be extremely frugal with money, their extravagant promotions belie the truth of their claims. There are wasteful projects galore 2. For example, there are museums and other lavish buildings simply to glorify Sai Baba himself. See for yourself here 3. What Venkataraman cannot contemplate is that Sai Baba overestimated how much he could spend!

Leading media and other organizations such as UNESCO and the U.S. State Department have been very stringent in their expectations of sound evidence from organised former devotees around the world. Those who have researched the worldwide allegations against Sathya Sai Baba include the BBC, DR (Denmark), ATUL (Argentina), SBS (Australia), ABC (Australia), and print media in India, the UK, Europe, Scandinavia, Canada, Australia etc. They quickly discovered for themselves the dishonesty and elusiveness of Sai Baba and his leaders. For example, this was why the BBC’s legal department permitted its ‘The Secret Swami’ team to clandestinely film DR Michael Goldstein, allowing millions in many countries to see him show no respect for the accountability and transparency that citizens and responsible organizations today expect. They also saw Goldstein act nastily 4 in a way that is the very antithesis of a spiritual leader.

It suits Venkataraman – who refers to Goldstein as “Brother” to suppress this telling aspect, as he also does with other self-damning statements by Sai Baba and Isaac Tigrett in ‘The Secret Swami5. The BBC interviewer Tanya Datta says to Tigrett “But even if it was proven to you that Sai Baba was a paedophile and a serial sex abuser, you’re saying it wouldn’t change the fact that he is your guru”. Tigrett replies, “Absolutely not. Absolutely not. He could go out and murder someone tomorrow…”

“High standards” would include acknowledging a fact of great ethical and moral importance. This is that many honourable devotees once in high standing in the Sathya Sai Organisation have done their best to see that those making the allegations are properly and fairly heard. Those who have investigated and spoken out include those who held prominent roles, such as Rick Raines, Richard Nelson, Al Rahm, Shirley Pike, Ella Evers, Dr. Timothy Conway, Glen Meloy, Serguei Badaev, Dave Lyons, William Lo, Hariram Jayaram, Terry Gallagher, Stephen Carthew, David Bailey, Britt-Marie Anden, Conny Larsson etc.

In the absence of proper and, these days, typical standards of organisational openness and accountability, there has been a large and principled exodus from the Sathya Sai Organization. Why do Goldstein, Venkataraman and the other key leaders conceal this from their congregations, and those political or religious leaders and the wider public they try so hard to cultivate and fetch to their keynote events?

It is not surprising, then, that the unaccountable ashram authorities and International Chairman met their match when they ejected the BBC for asking reasonable questions after filming there. The result was a worldwide exposure of the cultist nature of it all. Every major British newspaper reviewed the documentary as being well-balanced and revealing journalism! 6

Gerald Moreno: No Real Sai Baba Devotee Could Applaud

Posted by Barry Pittard on July 14, 2010

It would not be possible for any professional, nor indeed competent school students of clear thinking, to view as urbane, civil and non-defamatory the writings of the internet fanatic, stalker and extreme manipulator of internet rankings, Gerald Joe Moreno, of New Mexico, USA.

Moreno’s bush-lawyering and untutored ‘research’ would be spotted (and regularly have been) in a few sentences by any lawyer, journalist or other bona fide researcher. That he is supported by well-known Sathya Sai Baba devotees is yet another sure sign of the trouble that the Sathya Sai cult is in. Demonstration of the poverty of Moreno’s intellectual and ethical status is not reliant on those who oppose Sathya Sai Baba and his cult. No sensible and civil individual would give Moreno a pass mark. For the freakish feat of staying on-the-job by night and day, often engaged in the most peripheral machinations, he fully merits an A+++.

In striking at prominent former Sathya Sai devotee coordinators such as Robert Priddy and me, he will even abuse the names of their family members. Terribly faulty inductions abound in his writings. By regular misreading of his paucity of facts, he maintains that these family members are involved in, or somehow support, the critique of Sathya Sai Baba. The independent British author of books and papers on religion and philosophy Kevin R.D. Shepherd writes:

“I learned about the invasive Moreno tactic of emailing the acquaintances of victims, a tactic designed to elicit details or to convey adverse reports. Furthermore, many emails sent to Joe Moreno have been paraded on his primary website in a manner that does not inspire universal approval. Those emails include some from the son of Robert Priddy dated January 2005. The non-devotee Kai Nicolai Priddy objected to being drawn into stigmatising web coverages along with his ex-devotee father. He repeatedly requested that his image and personal information should be deleted from the primary Moreno website The Moreno responses were aggressive, and unyielding with regard to the image of the protester. Moreno excused his action in this respect by arguing that he had merely published a screen capture of a public domain image”.

Moreno stoops so low as to cause great concern to a young child (and of course his extended family and friends) by putting up his photo and naming him in multiple references, all the while severely defaming his father (myself). What child (indeed what adult) does not query his or her name, and the name of this or that friend, in an internet search engine? As typical of his attacks on many others, Moreno gets facts wrong such as the child’s age, making the child appear older than he is. Of course, a child of any age should not be drawn into such matters. That he would draw sobbing tears from a child by associating his name with Sathya Sai Baba related matters is despicable, and indeed seriously unbalanced. Yet he is a known associate of those closely associated with Sathya Sai Baba. How can it be said that these individuals – for example, those associated with the saibabaofindia group and key followers elsewhere – are following his teachings of Sathya (Truth), Dharma (Right Conduct), Shanti (Peace), Prema (Love) and Ahimsa (Non Violence)?

Unfortunately, the internet is a ‘wild west’, and frequently prevents actions against libel, defamation and other forms of abuse. Our formal complaints to internet authorities and the police about Moreno’s conduct have proved fraught with difficulties. Particularly, these relate to the anarchic state of the world wide web. Internet freedom is treasurable, but unlike democratic freedoms and norms, where there are legal and other measures of accountability, it can transgress against the most fundamental civilities and ethical responsibilities. There is a place for robust, even painful debate. But, characteristically, the internet tolerates far more than this. It is the magnet for those hellbent on causing hell for others.

Moreno’s myriad and unrelenting ploys include taking a fact or a half-truth and twisting it in hostile and extreme degree, and in putting worst-case constructs on facts for which commonsense alone would suggest alternative explanations. Whatever does not meet with his interpretation is branded a lie and a deception. He attacks virtually every individual who has another view on Sathya Sai Baba. His language is full of denigration and heat. When Sathya Sai Baba’s failed prophecy, made on his 60th birthday, that he would not age thereafter is pointed out, Moreno calls foul, calls us ageist, and puts up photographic proof of the ageing process in the Sai Baba critic. As usual, he misses the point. But then, such gross distortions abound in his writings.

In short, it is simply not possible for a Sathya Sai Baba devotee genuinely following his or her guru’s teachings to agree with his conduct. Strangely, one of his plethora of internet sites is named: Love, Light and Spirituality.

Robert Priddy has recently posted the articles:

Guru-buster Premanand exposed Gerald Moreno

Posted by robertpriddy on July 14, 2010

Gerald Moreno: straw man fallacy re Conny Larsson, Sanjay Dadlani etc.

In the latter article, he writes:

“The logical fallacies that Moreno does not employ cannot be listed, as there seem to be none. He is the great proponent of argumentum ad hominem and equally the straw man argument. This fallacy is one of his most basic crutches. The Straw Man fallacy occurs when one ignores a person’s actual position and substitutes a distorted, exaggerated or misrepresented version of that position through a false association to other persons or standpoints. For example, it works thus:

Robert Priddy states x
Conny Larsson states x, but also y
Therefore Priddy supports y!
Sanjay Dadlani stands for x and y
Priddy endorses Dadlani’s stand on x
Therefore Priddy endorses y!
Kevin R.D. Shepherd is against x
Priddy is also against x
Therefore Kevin R.D. Shepherd is for what Priddy is for!

One can substitute for x and y all manner of specific terms, as Moreno does ad lib. All such ‘arguments’ are completely fallacious conclusions – there is no common middle term in any argument”.

For many years, Robert Priddy headed the Sathya Sai Organization of Norway. He is a retired academic in philosophy and the social sciences, University of Oslo. His articles for ‘Sanathana Sarathi’, Sathya Sai Baba’s official publication that goes round the world, were highly regarded by its editor V.K.Narasimhan (who had been one of India’s greatest newspaper editors). See my article:

Will Hollywood and Bollywood Dare To Take On The Cult Theme?

Posted by Barry Pittard on June 14, 2010

Through very separate channels, I have learnt that there have been discussions in different parts of the movie-making world about what approaches to scripting, venue, demographics, legal issues, and so forth, might best lend themselves to portraying the story of a guru so controversial and ‘larger-than-life’ as Sathya Sai Baba. Other charismatic cult leader names are mentioned, but Sathya Sai Baba is the biggest.

I earlier wrote:  Dare Songstress Nora Jones Touch Sai Baba? Sathya Sai Baba interests courted Jones (the daughter of the famous Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar, both of them his longtime devotees) to play the lead in a movie, oddly titled “My Guy”, and it will be interesting to get confirmation of the story that the project has foundered.

With the above thoughts in mind, as I was looking at a few articles and it struck me how many impactful stories, if followed to their roots,  there would be found in so much work of the more serious and competent critics of Sathya Sai Baba. Wide publics have a thirst for murder and mayhem. This does not lack on Sathya Sai Baba’s bloody trail. There is massive financial, political, and judicial and police corruption. But whether enough audiences can be persuaded to view often-tabooed and acutely distressing themes such as serial sexual abuse is a moot point. One of the top handful of former police chiefs in the world told me that he considered Sathya Sai Baba as plausibly the master criminal of the 20th century. (To reputed media or other serious investigators, I can share his name. He is in consultancy these days). We also know , again at first hand, that in various foreign services there are high-ranking diplomats (including at the level of Ambassador) who do not wish to see Sathya Sai Baba triumph, but in repeated cases they are told by their governments:  not to ‘rock the boat with India’.

The need for excellent movies on the contra cult topic is acute. It is one of the most crucially avoided topics by powerful political and religious  instrumentalities. Apart from common-or-garden cowardice, there is a great deal of misconceived liberalism about, with an excess of political correctness and misunderstanding at large in the matter of what, exactly, religious freedom consists. In the preface to Robert Priddy’s and my long article, we wrote, referring to a writer dear to me:

“The foes of the ‘open society’ (Sir Karl Popper’s term) are those who use its very openness to achieve their closed and devious ends. Dr. Venkataraman’s tendentious cover-up article expresses untruths which have long circulated within the cult, giving an opportunity to confront him with facts and truth”:  The Sathya Sai Organisation’s Deception and Propaganda Exposed

The cultic costs to society are catastrophic, Intelligent movies driven by more than just profits will need to draw together the two main needs: integrity AND profitability. No reason why creative people should languish for honest work. I notice, incidentally, that some movies, expectedly, are jumping, but crassly, onto the 3D bandwagon. But what better country than India to portray via the 3D medium. Imagine if Sir Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ had been made in 3D. Those who wish to see the most powerful exposure of cults need to be on the cutting edge, but not for its own sake.

The articles I had in view (although there are so many others) were:

David Bailey on Sathya Sai Baba (transcript from phone call) Excerpts with surprising facts that came to light when this great favourite of Sai Baba was phoned by Thomas Wiehe of Sweden – concerning the reasons why the Bailey’s rejected Sai Baba and all his works.

Inside information on Sathya Sai Baba by very close servitor Famous Indian editor, V.K. Narasimhan, was full of doubts about Sathya Sai Baba’s claims, but supported him due to social improvements his movement has made.

Big Cult Trumps At Law. Is But A ‘Bookshop’

Posted by Barry Pittard on June 7, 2008

The issue of the Alaya Rahm law case against the directors of the Sathya Sai Society of America is dealt with at this place:

Alaya Rahm’s Lawsuit vs Sathya Sai Society of America – Joint Statement by the International JuST Group and the Rahm family

Sathya Sai Baba’s Organization Lost Chance For Independent Adjudication

The Rahm case was lost on a technicality. The Society is but a bookshop! Lawyers and others in various countries since consulted are nonplussed that the Alaya Rahm’s pro bono attorney, William Brelsford, appeared not to see this coming and therefore to preempt it. Further, the judge in Orange County Court initially pointed out that Sathya Sai Baba could not be sued in the USA, only in India. Thus, a neat piece of lawyering in the cult’s long-term setting up of its organs paid off for them. But it was not good for the truth, which the Sathya Sai Organization members go about proclaiming is theirs – with such beatific smiles on their faces!

Here was an opportunity for the facts – wherever they may have led – to get out into the open. It is no frivolous thing for a family (or anyone) to embark on a course so potentially fraught with hazards. If confusions are being systematically generated, they can be sorted out. If lies are uncovered, penalties for perjury can be heavily invoked. One’s strengths and weakness are open to the media and to the public.

Yet Mr and Mrs Rahm (Al and Marisa), who formerly and for many years rose to great heights in the Sathya Sai Organization, embarked on a number of attempts, in consultation with other family members, including most of all their son Alaya, to bring to light the facts as adjudged within the third party, democratic and accountable institutions in their country, such as the Orange County Court, in California, and the State Department, USA. They were also generous of their time and energy (amidst strong private commitments that those such as Glen Meloy and myself had to be very respectful of) in testifying to demandingly investigative media such as the BBC, DR (Denmark’s national television and radio broadcaster, Daily Telegraph, India Today, The West Australian, etc. Likewise in our group’s submissions to UNESCO. See links at the foot of this note.

Demonization of Dissenters Who Stand Up At Great Sacrifice

As I know from my personal contact with them and other first-hand sources, they have withstood unimaginable distortions, attacks on their integrity, slander and libel. The links, sometimes disguised by being indirect, between foremost leaders of the Sathya Sai Organization and unofficial Internet presences where the libeling of former devotees continues, we are able to document to bona fide media, scholarly investigators, courts, concerned public institutions, and so on. In regard to the unconscionable behavior of  Sathya Sai Baba devotees who keep silent in the face of the terrible libels and slanders, See the recent document (supported by still further evidence which, for any legal or other prudential reasons is for the time being witheld)  signed by former devotees:

The International Sathya Sai Organization – an accessory to a massive libel and disinformation campaign. Open letter to the Prasanthi Council – c/o Dr. M. Goldstein, Dr. G. Venkataraman and its other members

One observes, as in many other cases of individuals becoming former followers of Sathya Sai Baba, how decades of loyalty, enormous sacrifice in contribution of service, finance, traveling to India under stressful conditions, traveling around one’s own and other countries on behalf of the teacher’s work, etc., are suddenly set at naught, and one is, virtually overnight, demonized.

The following quotes from Robert Priddy‘s and Barry Pittard’s four-part series – The Sathya Sai Organisation’s Deception and Propaganda Exposed – which contains many links to germane sources, and is particularly useful for media, scholars, and to those public or private institutions who wish to be wary of connections with the cult’s officials, and other serious investigators:

In a statement by the Rahm family, their attorney and the International JuST Group (9), we read: “No court found Alaya’s allegations to be false. Simply, the suit could not continue on a technicality, and the claims of sexual abuse stand irrefutably true, just as before”. Dr. Venkataraman is himself making a false allegation! Attorney William Brelsford Esq., seeing formidable legal obstacles set by the defendants, and not least working against a statute of limitations deadline, advised Alaya Rahm to self-dismiss the case. Along with other difficulties encountered, his attorney has explained, June 29th, 2006, to Alaya Rahm and his family:

“We were successful at the demurrer stage in establishing that a duty would be owed by the Society in the event they sponsored and/or endorsed the trips that Alaya went on when he was abused by Sai Baba. As it turns out, the Society is not the “hub” of all of Sai Baba’s corporate activities. Rather, the Society, pursuant to declarations under penalty of perjury, confirmed they are a bookstore… nothing more. Accordingly, we do not have the necessary factual requirements to establish liability on the Society/Book center.”
