Is Sathya Sai Organization ‘Education’ Really Education?

Posted by Barry Pittard on March 25, 2011

There are many means by which the Sathya Sai Organization spreads its influence in communities throughout the world.  In regard to education, one is in-house, and introduces children of Sai devotees to the major world faiths, but emphasises primary faith in Sathya Sai Baba as God fully incarnate on earth at this time, and living in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh South India.

On the other hand, it seeks to gain admissions to schools wherever it can, where its devotees take a highly packaged, stripped down, re-vamped version of the program, in which Sathya Sai Baba is not promoted. This is called its secular EHV (Education in Human Values) initiative.

But getting children to think to a purpose, and to become confident in their own self processes, rather than indoctrinating them is among the most vital requirements of this or any other time. For those interested in seeking another approach to values education, this video clip is, I think, worth looking at as a challenge to hard-held ideas about getting kids involved in passionate and meaningful discussions about ethical values.

That is to say, we need to unfold an emphasis on stimulating independent ethical thinking and enquiry, rather than imposing received religious or philosophical systems of one kind or another. Teaching how to think, rather than what to think. And fostering feelingful, mutual acceptance, rather than mere toleration.

Quote from this article –

Sai Baba’s message is being preached in more than 500 British schools through charities which claim to provide non-denominational education in “human values”.

Tom Sackville, a former Home Office Minister, last night urged the Government to take decisive action to warn teachers and pilgrims of the dangers of becoming involved with Sai Baba. The guru’s reputation is plummeting after the United Nations cancelled a conference at his headquarters, issuing a condemnation of his alleged sex abuse of youths and boys.

Unicef pulled out of a conference it was due to sponsor with the guru’s educational organisation in Puttaparthi last September.

The UN’s cultural agency issued a trenchant statement: “The organisation is deeply concerned about widely reported allegations of sexual abuse involving youths and children that have been levelled at the leader of the movement in question, Sathya Sai Baba.

“Whilst it is not for Unesco to pronounce itself in this regard, the organisation restates its firm moral and practical commitment to combating the sexual exploitation of children, in application of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which requires states to protect children from all forms of sexual exploitation and violence.”

In hundreds of British schools, Sai Baba-influenced educational programmes on “human values” are currently being promoted as part of the National Curriculum. The Charity Commission met the trustees of one of the educational charities involved, the Sathya Sai Education in Human Values Trust UK, last year and “found no concerns”, a spokesman said.

Mr Sackville, chairman of the anti-cult organisation Fair (Family Action Information and Resource), said that he had successfully intervened to persuade a girls’ school to reject a Sai Baba-inspired course.

“Schools are not on their guard because at official level they are not given any steer,” Mr Sackville said.

The Quiet Weeding Out Of Sathya Sai Baba’s Embarrassing Statements

Posted by Barry Pittard on May 6, 2010

The official Sathya Sai ‘weeders’ have removed the presence on the internet of major Sathya Sai Baba claims. These are of the sort bound to attract prompt dismissal in the minds of many inquirers. An extremely wide cross-section of any public, except those of his own fold, would regard his claims as stemming from megalomania. And it is those inquirers – and the money and skill-sets that successful recruitment can bring – that Sathya Sai Baba’s organization desperately needs as donors if it is to continue to pay its astronomical bills. What to speak of subsidizing his promise to rule the world before he leaves it, circa 2022!

It should be noted that the huge claims have not, in and of themselves, been withdrawn. But they are being kept as in-house as possible. Secular fronts like his ‘Education in Human Values’ and ‘Educare’ have been developed, which aim to penetrate schools, universities and other mainstream institutions. Sai Baba’s leaders around the world have been instructed to avoid mention of the claims when dealing with the public. But the tall claims are an absolute article of faith among his devotees, and what is preached in all the Sai centers. The propaganda target is the wider public, which is not going to take kindly to Sai Baba’s grandiose claims.

Sathya Sai Baba’s weeders can weed out some of his embarrassing statements as much as they like, but they can’t weed out any of his palaces.

The following is taken from the main body of the official web page – removed from http://www.sathyasai.org/discour/content.htm  (but still archived here)

Four important discourses by Sri Sathya Sai Baba:
Shiva Shakthi
(6 July 1963). Swami heals himself from an 8-day stroke and announces his third incarnation as Prema Sai eight years after he leaves this body. The revelation (17 May 1968). The last part of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s discourse at the “World Conference of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organizations” in Bombay, 17 May 1968. Sai Baba states plainly and directly that he has come as an incarnation of God to restore righteousness (dharma). Forty-Third birthday discourse (23 November 1968). Swami speaks about His being the Avatar and proclaims his mission on earth: the establishment of righteousness. Who is Sai? (9 June 1974). Sai Baba talks about God, the Religion of Love, and His Avatar-hood. He explains why he materializes rings, etc., and gives them to people, and he explains what “Sai Baba” means.

Since the movement to expose Sathya Sai Baba and his worldwide cult began to flourish, circa the year 2000, the key leaders of the Sathya Sai Organization have had to make extraordinary attempts to arrest his organization’s decline. This has been an onerous task for them, not only in emotional but in vast financial terms. I have elsewhere noted the recruiting drives (although his propaganda managers certainly do not call them this) in plush venues in various countries. In the article ‘Secret Swami’ Cult Recruits At Prime Public Venues , I wrote:

“What does the cult  need for its survival – given over a decade of unrelenting exposure? It needs to provide for the stupendous upkeep and maintenance of its costly and sumptuous buildings and various programs that glorify Sathya Sai Baba as God of Gods … (A few recruitment centers are):  Cooper’s Union, New York; Town Hall, Melbourne; Copley International Conference Center, San Diego; Super Dome, Sydney; La Mirada Theatre, Hilton Ballroom (both Los Angeles); Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Chicago; etc., …”

But what the Sathya Sai weeders cannot remove are the patent evidences of vast opulence, the like of which India has seldom seen.

The Sathya Sai movement is in tortuous self-contradiction. The more its own documents are analysed, the more this fact rams home.  Thus the now chronically ailing would-be Avatar of All Avatars says:

“I do not like this pomp and show. I do not derive any joy out of it. Pomp, such as this, has become a fashion now, even among ascetics and monks who ought to know better. They profess poverty and simplicity and yet, they allow or encourage their disciples to waste much energy and money on pomp and pageantry which serve only to develop the egotism of themselves and their followers. The emphasis on show makes a thing hollow of all meaning.” (Sathya Sai Speaks Vol 3, p. 228)

“The foes of the ‘open society’ (Sir Karl Popper’s term) are those who use its very openness to achieve their closed and devious ends. Sai Baba and his highly authoritarian and cultist organisation have such ends, which critics have tried to make known. Its foremost leaders silence all those who question it- and never face substantive criticisms. For the first time – after six years of pained and guilty silence – since hundreds of long-term devotees left it in disgust – the Sathya Sai Organisation has found it necessary to try to defuse the debate about Sathya Sai Baba’s alleged crimes, deceits and fraudulence. Dr. Venkataraman’s tendentious cover-up article expresses untruths which have long circulated within the cult, giving an opportunity to confront him with facts and truth”

Robert Priddy’s Views on Key Human Values in Relation To Sathya Sai Baba

Posted by Barry Pittard on December 6, 2009

In the brief article – Human Values – Sai Baba’s truncated ideas Robert Priddy, an academic philosopher at the University of Oslo for many years, and a former head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Norway, states his view of what human values are, in contradistinction to “divinely-instated values for humans” as proclaimed by Sathya Sai Baba.

In the mind of any serious educator, especially when versed in the history of educational theory and practice, very concerning questions are raised. One of the key concerns is that, in the Sathya Sai educational undertaking, critical thinking is distinctly missing. When an English teacher at the Sathya Sai College in Whitefield, via Bangalore, South India, then Sai Baba’s premier education institution, I was alarmed at the extraordinary amount of rote learning to be seen. Swatting and regurgitation were on all sides. It was as though the great educational innovators, whether East or West, had never lived. Where were the exiting staff room discussions? Where was the meeting of minds? Where were the in-service professional development programs?  Where was there a working towards new paradigms? Rather, things were stuck in a time warp. Here or there was a teacher in love with his subject who deeply cherished the students (I think fondly of my former colleague P.K. Mohanti), but each lecturer slaved away in his own ‘burrow’. Lacking was a sense of the organic, of a meaningful community of learning. Marks and gold medals were the thing, and a wider unreformed education system in India reenforced this defecit of true learning. True, there were movements of reform in India, but the Sathya Sai setup, despite all the trumpet-blowing by those of narrow, uncritical mindsets on education, was decidedly not one of them.

In the way of innovation, I was fortunate in having the protection of the Principal (which actually meant Sai Baba), who handed over his own third year degree course to me as well as my teaching the other two years of the English course and the encouragement of the scientist and Sai Baba’s chief interpreter into English Dr S. Bhagavantham and the Board and two of my immediate colleagues, and many marvelous boys (both those devoted and not devoted to Sathya Sai Baba). But the flaws were great.

As the Sathya Sai Education in Human Values spread throughout Sai centers around the world, one could, yet again, see serious flaws. One saving grace was that contributors to the formation of the courses were international, which meant that some very antiquated teaching theory and practice got knocked aside. Since Robert Priddy and Serguei Badaev (the latter of whom was closely involved in SSEHV), both of them longtime educators, have incisively raised key questions, I shall point my readers to some of their critical work on Sathya Sai education programs. See my article: Sathya Sai Baba Critic Serguei Badaev: An Incisive Voice of Conscience From Russia

Priddy writes:

“The values according to [or against which] we act are unavoidable and essential links that tie together personal perceptions and judgements, motives and actions into the sphere of common cultural values.  They are central to grasping the motivations of our social and political life. Sai Baba promotes his own brand of ‘five human values’, which is a simple and often all too vague recipe. His biographer Kasturi writes that Sai Baba scribbled the 5 values down on the back of an envelope when Kasturi asked him to define them.  Grabbed as if out of thin air without any deeper thought, it is quite evident how shallow, rigid and incomplete they are when examined carefully and critically. They can only function at a most elementary level of teaching children, at best, for the doctrine is flawed and is badly out of step with modern thought and educational standards (outside developing nations)” .

6) Values, character development and psychic health
7) Inherent failings in Sai’s human values
8 ) Sai Baba’s teaching’s shortage of universal educational concepts and contents
9) Simplicity and vagueness in the service of moralism
10) The taint of intellectual and moral rigidity
11) Human justice as distinct from divine command
12) Sai Educare’s fundamentalist, doctrinaire teachings?

Badaev has written:   “Critical thinking, as one of a basic skills of character building, is absolutely opposed to the EHV and Sai Educare approaches. I think it is a threat to the Sathya Sai mini-empire. The situation is in a sense very similar to what occurred during the Soviet regime. Communist leaders needed people with good character to work hard and with enthusiasm. But the regime tried to restrict firmly (or to control) the area of application of their intellect and research skills to keep themselves safe from their analysis. The same with Sathya Sai. There is a sort of invisible circle around him where you should abandon your critical skills and submit completely to his uncertainty and mystery. Another interesting aspect of Sai education is an idea of separate education of boys and girls which is taken for granted without any serious justification”.

Tony McNulty Brit MP. Expenses Scandal Erupts. His Sai Baba Cult Nexus Yet To Be Probed

Posted by Barry Pittard on March 23, 2009

A big scandal has erupted in the UK surrounding  British Labour Member of Parliament, Tony McNulty.

Will Sai Baba Take Heat off Brit Minister Tony McNulty MP

Will Sai Baba Take Heat off Brit Minister Tony McNulty MP

Some of my readers will recall that McNulty is connected with the head of the Sathya Sai Organization in the UK, Ashok Bhagani. Evidence suggests the two men are friends.

It is also known that Bhagani’s daughter has long been working, with varying hours of service, for Bhagani in his Westminster office.

Tony McNulty has represented the Harrow Constituency since 1997, and been a government Minister since 2002. He is currently Minister of State for Employment and Welfare Reform, although widely tipped to become Home Minister. His wife is Christine Gilbert, the chief inspector of schools, with whose Ministry questions about Sai Baba’s secular fronts in Education in Human Values have been raised. The Times of London writer Dominic Kennedy raised on page 3. this issue of unacknowledged sect influence in UK, referring to June Auton, a familiar figure in Sai Baba’s UK organization. See:

‘Suicide, sex and the guru. The reputation of Sai Baba, a holy man to the rich and famous, has been tarnished by mysterious deaths and allegations of sexual abuse’The Times – August 27, 2001

The international Sathya Sai Organization has been going all out to penetrate the world’s satellite radio waves.  It is known that McNulty has been involved in efforts to bring these plans to fruition.

As declared by the director of Radio Sai Global Harmony, Dr G. Venkataraman, the aim is to get Sathya Sai Baba and his message into every corner of the globe. See:

Sathya Sai Baba’s ‘Minister of Propaganda’ – Dr G. Venkataraman

Note: Launched in November 23, 2001, Radio Sai Global Harmony in conjunction with Sri Satya Sai Books and Publications Trust, all part of the International Sathya Organization, delivers 24/7 satellite broadcasts via WorldSpace Corporation in many regions of the world. The latter’s supremo, Dr Michael Nobel, has extensively sung Sai Baba’s praises. See comments about Nobel in Robert Priddy’s articles:

Sathya Sai Baba’s hunger for international recognition

Dr Michael Nobel, Sai Baba man. Warned by Nobel Foundation, Sweden

Dr Michael Nobel, Sai Baba man. Warned by Nobel Foundation, Sweden

Nobel has been effectively disposed of in reports by e.g., The New York Times and by the Royal Swedish Nobel Foundation itself (see links in the Robert Priddy article). Sai Baba’s statement in a discourse (November 18, 2001), very far from omniscient, is also exposed for all eyes except those of his smitten followers:

“They are giving the Nobel Prize to many people. The man who gives the Nobel Prize (Chairman of the Nobel Prize Committee) is coming here on the 22nd November. The ones who will show this to the whole world, TV people, are all coming here on the 22nd.

Major British Newspaper Called Investigative Journalist off McNulty-Bhagani story

In 2008, a leading journalist from one of Britain’s top newspapers, The Guardian, attempted to investigate this McNulty-Bhagani nexus.  As soon as he made headway, he got called off the story.  However, on Saturday November 4, 2007, The Guardian had run Paul Lewis’s story The Indian living god, The paedophilia claims and the Duke of Edinburgh awards.  See my article:

UK Guardian On Sathya Sai Baba and Duke’s Awards

There have been instances where sudden spikings of Sai Baba related stories, much to the upset of journalists who have put in a lot of investigative slog – such as senior journalists on CanWest (where wealthy Canadian Sai Baba cult members threatened the withdrawal of considerable business advertisements). At the 11th hour, the editor of The West Australian pulled a story by award-winning journalist Torrance Mendez that was to be front paged. However, it is known that The Times, BBC, CBC (Canada), SBS (Australia) and India Today have all withstood considerable pressures by Sai Baba’s extremely wealthy and well-connected emissaries.

The Sathya Sai Organization is noted, whenever it gets wind of an upcoming media story, for attempting to keep critical stories OUT of the news. As perfectly fits its authoritarian, cultic status, it does not stand for openness, transparency and accountability. See the BBC film footage from its 2004 documentary:

See footage from India’s equivalent of the BBC, Doordashan:

The McNulty-Bhagani Nexus

There are questions to be asked about what kind of contributions may have been made by Bhagani to McNulty. Also, whether McNulty’s links with the Sathya Sai Baba sect are more than would be required of an MP on behalf of constituents.

Why has McNulty had such close association with the Sathya Sai Baba cult? This – when the Times of London, the BBC, CBC, SBS, ABC, The Telegraph, The Guardian, and serious media in other parts of the world, including India Today, all stood by the integrity of their investigations. Why, in short, Tony McNulty’s persistent linkage with the Sai sect?

Tony McNulty British MP. Sathya Sai Baba Behind Him

In background: Sathya Sai Baba’s photo. Is Sai Baba behind Tony McNulty MP in more ways than have been made known? Will McNulty declare moneys that he has received from any strongly Sathya Sai Baba-connected source? Will he disclose why he has made many visits to Sathya Sai Baba venues? Will he say what his interests are in Sai Global Harmony and in the setting up of a powerful transmitter in Great Britain?

The Daily Mail Story: Tony McNulty Expenses Disclosures

Yesterday, Sunday, Mar 22 2009, The Daily Mail ran a lengthy story that suggests McNulty has been, if not outrightly corrupt, then taking expenses of a kind bound to anger millions of Britons who are facing dangerously rising unemployment rates. See:

Minister’s £60,000 expenses for parents’ home: ‘Rumbled’ Tony McNulty drops claim… then calls for it to be curtailed

Among other newspapers reacting to the Daily Mail reports, the BBC has responded:

It will be interesting to watch the development of this story. In the meantime, my articles on Tony McNulty are:
