Parapsychologist Erlendur Haraldsson Under Fire For Suppressing Vital Evidence About Sathya Sai Baba

The last mentioned link, especially, may severely contribute to the permanent academic and social discrediting of the Icelandic parapsychologist, Professor Erlendur Haraldsson. The Wikipedia entry on Haraldsson states that he “is a Professor emeritus of psychology at the Faculty of social science at the University who, despite having retired from his former post at the University of Iceland, continues to be an active academic”.

The readings cited above suggest, in various of Haraldsson’s writings terribly flawed researches but also in serious disconnects between what he has divulged privately, and what he has written publicly, including in his latest book:  “Modern Miracles: The Story of Sathya Sai Baba: A Modern Day Prophet” (2013, ISBN 9781908733252).modern_miracles

He certainly has been active in traveling around the world, hosted by Sathya Sai Baba devotees avid to hear his allegedly learned confirmations of Sathya Sai Baba in 1980. It delighted them to hear such a noted academician say how remarkable was Sathya Sai Baba, a great spiritual being, ‘true to his nation’.  See:  Erlendur Haraldsson (1980), “Golden Age”, Sri Sathya Sai Books and Publications, Prasanthi Nilayam, Andhra Pradesh, 255-256. This year, Haraldsson has given university lectures on Sathya Sai Baba in the UK. We regretted that we were not able quickly enough to get academics along who were prepared to question him in a rational, scientific way.

For several years, Haraldsson and Robert Priddy, retired academic philosopher and social scientist (Oslo University, Norway), and for many years head of the Sathya Sai Organisation in Norway, were friends. During a plentiful exchange of emails, Haraldsson made frank disclosures that, as we compare the emails and other reputable testimony as viewed alongside his public writings, are very different indeed to what he has stated to the world at large, and this in books published in (according to a note on Haraldsson’s website) 17 languages and in many editions.

Priddy says that, after his repeated sharing with Haraldsson important and highly credible data (including television footage from the BBC and India’s national broadcaster Doordarshan) that e.g., showed Sai Baba faking of miracles, he felt that Haraldsson’s continued suppression of his real views (which have long had a readership of many thousands of Sathya Sai Baba followers around the world) and his sweeping dismissals of palpable contrary evidence were so serious a professional and ethical affront that he, Priddy, has now released the traffic of emails.

Vishal Arora’s Article On Sathya Sai Baba

Posted by Barry Pittard on October 15, 2010

I draw my readers’ attention to the following articles by colleague and former head of the Norwegian Sathya Sai Organization, Robert Priddy.

  • Vishal Arora Indian journalist exposes Sathya Sai Baba
  • Vishal Arora – New Delhi Indian Journalist – on Sathya Sai Baba
  • Vishal Arora and Gerald Moreno’s vain deceptive e-mails
  • Vishal Arora Indian journalist exposes Sathya Sai Baba
  • Vishal Arora – New Delhi Indian Journalist – on Sathya Sai Baba

“As is his wont, Moreno speculated over why I was not on-line for two weeks in the month or so prior to Arora’s articles, implying that I was in India meeting him. Far from it, I was travelling in the Western hemisphere only.

In fact, Moreno is extremely frustrated by the fact that no serious journalist or researcher will take any notice of what he writes, not as soon as they read his diatribes and falsifications. He was rejected by journalists in USA and one in Norway (at Aftenposten, who contacted me after an e-mail exchange with him which gave her the right picture well enough. She thought he was childish! Moreno wrote back to her that he was “very disappointed”!). He was up in arms over Tulasi Srinivas, who mentioned –  sometimes inaccurately and with much censorship of our evidence – the researches of Brian Steel, Barry Pittard and myself… but gave Moreno’s conspiracies the cold shoulder altogether. He has also been given the cold shoulder by my friend and colleague, Erlendur Haraldsson (in psychological and parapsychological matters), who simply mailed back to the mischievous Moreno how we are old friends. Everything I wrote about Haraldsson on my web pages is true (my wife can attest to the content of many conversations about Sai Baba’s egomania etc. he and I had). Of course, I have the proof of my various claims about his opinions in Haraldsson’s own e-mails to me, of which I have at least 50.

Thus, Vishal Arora was no doubt drawn more and more into a sceptical attitude regarding Sathya Sai Baba by Moreno’s phoney friendly advances, though he (Aurora) did not communicate much with the sceptics. He e-mailed me on the advice of the dissident Serguei Badaev, former Sathya Sai Organization President in Moscow, quoting him as follows:-

‘We are continually being persecuted by various Sai Baba supporters, not least by Murali Krishna Yachendra… related to a most prominent Sai Baba follower in India. I have, for example, received a public death threat not so long ago too'”

Public Petition On Sathya Sai Baba (1)

There is a Public Petition calling for official probing of Sai Baba and his Sathya Sai Organization. (See website details at the end of this post).

The JUST (Just Seekers of Truth) petition is presented by a globally networked group of former followers of Sathya Sai Baba. In the ranks of both devotees and dissenters, there are those who say that Sai Baba is history’s most powerful guru. Some critics regard him as one of history’s arch deceivers – highly charismatic, highly flawed. He may brilliantly inspire good social uplift works, which is why so many earnest and good people are attracted to him, but profoundly conceals, along with his core servitors who keep an vice-like grip on his global organization, what is morally loathsome and criminal.
