Sathya Sai Baba Made Huge Science and History Mistakes

Posted by Barry Pittard on September 21, 2011

“India is the only place where people are not worried about any attacks.  In America , Germany and other countries, they can’t eat well or sleep well. There is fear of bombs always in those countries. But in India, there is no fear of bombs. India will never have any such attacks.” Sathya Sai Baba 22-10-2008.

Sathya Sai Baba’s ‘educated’ devotees have a great deal to answer for. Many of his pronouncements directly contradict basic, long-established, irrefutable facts that their own children learn at school. It is little wonder that many Sai devotees’ children so seriously question their parents’ beliefs, and that unbridgeable gaps of discourse subsist between, on the one hand, the nonsense their parents subscribe to and, on the other, the perfectly legitimate attempts of the children’s teachers to teach them facts of history and science that are not in any dispute.

This regrettable situation does not relate to expected intergenerational differences of perception. It is fundamental to the breakdown that occurs in the case of one cult after another. A young person’s spirit AND intelligence – unless these qualities have, themselves, been damaged by the absurd belief systems – will both rebel. And for the best of reasons.

The late Howard Murphet, Australian journalist and author of best-selling books on Sai Baba, with whom he was close for years, wrote:

“Swami once, a good many years ago told me that He would not travel abroad until His own house was in order, by that He means India, of course”. Source: Online version, “The Lights of Home”

His ability to mangle historical fact – repeatedly, and within a few sentences – will cause groans to even the slightly well-informed:

“Three hundred and fifty years B.C., before Christ, Jews lived. However, among Jews, there were religions such as Islam and Christianity. People of that land, they are all Jews. That land is the birthplace of both the religions, Islam and Christianity. The Hebrew language was very prominent. This Hebrew language is more or less equal to our Sanskrit. …”

“Christianity is not just 2,000 years in its origin. It was there even before Christ, 350 years. There the divinity is explained very clearly.”

“The name and the fame of Jesus Christ have spread far and wide. Here, at this moment, there are two schools of thought. The first group of thought – Roman Catholics. There is another group that fought with this group. This group is called Protestants. As they protested, they are Protestants. So among Jews there are these two groups: Catholics and Protestants. The difference of opinion has increased day by day. This led to Jesus, whose life was in danger. Jews there in Jerusalem did not permit Jesus to go there. Like this, religious conflict and fighting was ever on the rise. There were 250 schools of thought, divisions there. They also monopolized certain countries.”

“Because of so many groups there, they all attempted even to harm Jesus. Romans on one side. Catholics on the other side. Luther on another side. There were so many groups that went on changing. All these differences are based on violence, and that led to madness. Because of this attachment to group affiliations, naturally there was conflict and fighting.”

“Religious affiliation leads to ego. This led to confusion among them as to what Jesus said right or wrong.”

His devotees indulge in Procrustean and fallacious methods to explain falsification of his prophecy about the time of his death. The fact they do not want to face is that dates given in countless Sai Trust publications accord with the standard international system – and NOT one or another of the Indian calendars.

Many of these fanciful commentators show no inkling that he also made several conflicting prophecies about his death date (not that they use the word ‘death’).

Sathya Sai Baba in his gold-plated glass coffin. His 40-day’s-later resurrection prophecy has also failed

Alexandra Nagel. A Seminal Writer On Sathya Sai Baba, A Guru Accused

Posted by Barry Pittard on July 3, 2010

Sathya Sai Baba’s slow but enormous rise was badly retarded with an explosive series of revelations, commencing circa 2000. From around the world, the indicting accounts were greatly facilitated by the advent of the internet age. What Sathya Sai Baba defenders do not reveal is that the majority of those who left his fold have never taken to the internet. They do not engage in controversy, and refusal to speak about the sufferings endured is quite common.  The Sathya Sai Organization knows the seriousness of its widespread losses. There is a repeated pattern of senior leaders telling Sai Centre leaders that the mischief comes from the merest handful of disgruntled former members. In quite Orwellian fashion, there is an erasure of uncomfortable memory, for many devotees know that those who have left have not, down many years, been other than tremendously devoted, hardworking, and dear friends or colleagues.

In a manner which contradicts Sathya Sai Baba’s teachings about truthfulness, loving words and actions, etc., members of the Sathya Sai Organization (in some cases who are close to Sathya Sai Baba and his core leadership) have supported, from the background, untold attacks on former devotees, and even their children and others who have had no part in exposing Sathya Sai Baba. The veracity and decency of many who have left the organization, including those who have had years of closeness to Sathya Sai Baba, and roles of outstanding responsibility, have been assailed. Decades have passed, and, overnight, former devotees are pronounced to be “demons”, “Judases”, and so forth.

Those who attack Sathya Sai Baba apostates ignore, in the case of those who have quit his side, the great deal of pain, and sometimes tragedy as when suicide, death, missing persons, the failure of his promises to cure, family, financial and other forms of severe breakdown have been the case, that has afflicted so many Sathya Sai Baba centers when revelations, impossible to ignore, erupt. The cultish blindness has been monumental. It is the poignant story reported by those who have left so many other authoritarian cults.

Rapidly, from around the world, there was an upthrust of allegation and counter-allegation. Apart from material often by non-writers, there was serious, sustained, analytical work. After the watershed first two to three years of internet exposure of Sathya Sai Baba and his sect, others than the Dutch former devotee academic writer Alexandra Nagel, like Robert Priddy, Brian Steel, Timothy Conway Ph.D., and myself took issues to many other levels, but certainly Ms Nagel’s writing was seminal, and it would be a pity to see it neglected. (Her M.A. thesis deals with aspects of the History of Western Esotericism). Though she has dealt with internet issues, she herself has not had a blogsite or website. Robert Priddy, Brian Steel, Timothy Conway have long had extensive websites. The former two have blogsites, and I have this one, ‘Call For Media and Government Investigation of Sathya Sai Baba’.

See:  A Guru Accused.  Sai Baba, from Avatar to Homo-paedophile. Alexandra H. M. Nagel. The Netherlands, August, 2001

Most people are deeply conservative, and afraid to enter controversy. It can have repercussions in the family, among friends, in the workforce and places of study, and so forth. Alexandra Nagel, in the very midst of the furore, wrote clearly and intelligently.

Why Do Prominent Sathya Sai Baba Sect Critics Persist?

Posted by Barry Pittard on May 20, 2009

Why should so many former Sathya Sai Baba devotees have left him? Why, in the attempt to bring about proper third party investigation, would prominent former devotee critics of him and his sect have persisted. against huge difficulties, for nearly a decade.

The Necessity of Fearless, Articulate Questioning of A Worldwide Sect

In the case of those in the last quadrant of their lives, why would they – after long and dedicated service in their professions, communities and families – not simply enjoy their retirement years? Or, rather, their refreshment years. Why would critics withstand constant attacks on themselves, being stalked, harassed, threatened with lawsuits and in other ways, shunned by those they knew and loved as fellow devotees down many years, and their lives intruded upon by unprincipled fanatics into their lives, and even the lives of those they know but who have nothing to do with the movement of exposure of Sathya Sai Baba and his cult?  Some useful readings here are:

The answer is plain to those who have known them for many years. They, typically, speak up irrespective of whether they are a minority. It is nothing new. They do not roll over. They see that there should be the presence of best practice standards of accountability and transparency. Of these, there is, in the Sathya Sai Baba sect, an abysmal lack. The BBC got it right – Sathya Sai Baba IS ‘the secret swami’. See:  The BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ – A Revision

Prominent former devotee commentators, such as  Brian Steel, Timothy Conway Ph.D

Timothy Conway, Ph.D

Timothy Conway, Ph.D., lecturer and author in Eastern religious studies. Santa Barbara, USA

and  Robert Priddy

Robert Priddy, Academic Philosopher and Sathya Sai Baba Critic

Robert Priddy, Academic Philosopher and Sathya Sai Baba Critic. Former longtime head of the Sathya Sai Organization, Norway

(the latter two of whom were respected leaders in the Sathya Sai Organization) like many others who join groups such as that Organization, continue to devote themselves to unselfish service. This does not stop, and why should it? To please those who wish to see no proper questioning of their leader and his cult occurs? That is to say, their highly authoritiarian and yet widely influential – outwardly all- sweetness-and-reason cult, the Sathya Sai Organization?

Attitudes of Service To Others

Does not exposing corruption and spiritual and ethical betrayal perpetrated on a phenomenal scale qualify as a service to many others? Why would it not? Who will stand up? Most will not. Some cannot. This one issue is far from the be-all-and-end-all of our lives. Fortunately, years of academic or professional discipline have equipped these critical writers to research, analyse and write quickly, and to balance such activities with an array of life’s other portfolios. The crude, denigrating portrayals of us, can be seen for what they are, at a glance. See the articles:

Very typically, former devotees do not view the importance of service to their fellow human beings differently to what they did before, during and after affiliating themselves with Sathya Sai Baba. This fact resoundingly testifies to the complicit silence of many Sai Baba devotees who have blotted out from their memories and hearts these long years of deeply committed service of so many former devotees from many countries. I have written of this aspect and closely related issues in these articles:

The Historic Perspective

Prominent writers critical of Sathya Sai Baba and the Sathya Sai Organization have backgrounds that evince a keen interest in the processes of history. On the one hand, there are the more immediate concerns in attempting to stop the human abuses and spiritual betrayals. There is the attempt to expose certain core leaders who have extensively withheld terrible facts from the organization rank-and-file. However, there is a longer perspective. It relates to history. In prominent writers on the Sathya Sai Baba phenomenon, there is a deep desire not to see a profoundly flawed would-be King of Kings and Lord of Lords (poorna avatar) triumph in the mind of many millions, possibly for centuries to come.
