UK Guardian On Sathya Sai Baba and Duke’s Awards

Posted by Barry Pittard on October 21, 2008

Directly after the November 2006 article in The Guardian (UK), The Indian living god, The paedophilia claims and the Duke of Edinburgh awards by Paul Lewis, an historic Indian media feed seachange started to happen.

The UK Guardian Exposes Indian Guru, Sai Baba

Paul Lewis article in The Guardian (UK) Exposed links with Duke of Edinburgh Awards

There were many successful IANS (Indo-Asian News Service) feeds to Indian media (and a few overseas) which referred to this article, with some added input from IANS Staffer Sudeshna Sarkar who followed up on the story, and filed from London. (See Resources, below).

hrh-the-duke-of-edinburgh.jpg

HRH The Duke of Edinburgh

His Royal Highness’s officials had to act on top of a ‘politically’ not very experienced or competent UK Duke of Edinburgh Awards CEO, Peter Westgarth – see HERE. They were slow off the mark. However, after very high level representations from our side, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme trustees and Prince Philip’s Private Secretary, Brigadier Sir Miles Hunt-Davies KCVO, CBE,

sir-miles-hunt-davis.jpg

realized that a serious matter was at hand. Questions were also raised by some powerful citizens, including a former Home Minister, Tom Sackville. The Duke of Edinburgh Awards required of Dr G. Venkataraman, head of Sathya Sai Baba’s international propaganda apparatus and deputy world chairman of the Sathya Sai Organization, that an official Sai Baba website take down the triumphant – but absurdly mistaken – information that the Duke of Edinburgh Award had been awarded to Sai Baba himself. Venkataraman complied.

Guardian Article and IANS News Agency Feed Loosen Indian Media Censorship on Sathya Sai Baba

This IANS feed broke decades’-long silence from from an Indian press which (with a rare notable exception such as India Today in December 2000) almost exclusively has censored news adverse to the extraordinarily powerful and influential Sathya Sai Baba. The Telangana separatist issue, in which vast conflicting interests were involved, was the next blow to Sai Baba’s virtual immunity to criticism in the Indian media. He spoke publicly about this hot topic, whereas in years past he has avoided comments concerning political issues. Why, after all, would he want to alienate huge number of followers who have many political suasions? More recently, however, he has been making increasing errors of judgement. See Sathya Sai Baba Continues To Ail

Sathya Sai Baba’s Promise of Moon Darshan Fails

This marked media change was yet again seen in early October 2007 in the wide Indian press coverage of reports that Sathya Sai Baba had promised a great divine miracle, subsequently cancelled when clouds appeared, in which thousands of his devotees gathered at his private airport, creating terrible traffic snarls and potential danger to human life and limb. This immediately followed an announcement in the evening via his close aide and chief translator Professor Anil Kumar, that Sai Baba would miraculously show the universal form of God (or vishwarupa darshanam) in the moon. But both Sai Baba’s own vision AND the moon itself that night were clouded over! (Sai Baba’s gesture, though unfulfilled, is redolent of the type of vision Sri Krishna gave to his chief disciple Arjuna as recorded in the Bhagavad Gita).

Again, it was the upstart news agency IANS which was aggressive in getting its feeds accepted in India.

Significantly:

  • Many NRI’s (non-resident Indians) freely are able to read news and views highly critical of Sai Baba in other countries around the world. A mere glance at the dozens of overseas media that have carried articles adverse to Sathya Sai Baba gives an idea of how exposing it is for Indian media that has normally imposed a heavy blanket on information critical of him
  • New generational influences are arising in Indian media far more inclined to secularism, and that what with the arrival of a rising ‘star’ news agency like IANS, Satha Sai Baba and his semi-feudal, ancien régime servitors and minders now face some tough challenges. New generations of movers and shakers are gradually emerging out of the grip of the gradually fading, but still rife, gerontocracy of the Indian power echelons.

Paul Lewis, UK Guardian. Saturday November 04 2006. Page 3 of the Top section.

Tom Sackville, a former Home Office minister and chairman of Fair, a cult-watching and victim support group, said: “It is appallingly naive for the award scheme to involve young people and the royal family with an organisation whose leader is accused of paedophilia.

‘Parents who plan to send their children on this month’s pilgrimage … should be aware of the danger their children are being exposed to.'”

A Duke Stops An Emperor. Edinburgh Routs Sai Baba

“Officials of The Duke of Edinburgh Awards and Buckingham Palace were upset by the boasting of those such as Dr G. Venkataraman and about the Award connections. (Dr. G. Venkataraman is Sai Baba’s deputy world head, who also directs Sai Baba’s international 7 days 24 hours propaganda satellite radio service via the WorldSpace International corporation. See Shitu Chudasama HERE. Shitu Chudasama is the UK Sai Baba national youth coordinator”.

TRS students wing attack Satya Sai temple over Telangana issue

“While addressing a gathering of devotees at his ashram in Puttaparthi in Anantapur district yesterday, Sai Baba had opposed the division of the state and said overall development was possible only if the state remained united.

The TRS leaders condemned his remarks and demanded his apology for hurting the sentiments of Telangana people”.

Sai Baba To Be Seen In Moon? But Where Was Moon?

“It is interesting that so many devotees have assumed that the vision apparently promised by Sai Baba via his chief translator and close servitor Professor Anil Kumar to many thousands of devotees gathered at his Puttaparthi ashram would entail seeing the form of Sai Baba on the moon. If they had consulted their timeless sacred classic, Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 11, they might have recalled that the vision granted by Sri Krishna to Lord Arjuna (vishwarupa or vishvarupa darshana) was of a very different character. It was not the form of Sri Krishna -who was right beside him! – but a cosmic vision of enormous range and depth”.

CNN-IBN Reports Action On Corrupt Indian Gurus

Posted by Barry Pittard on August 2, 2008

The influential media outlet CNN-IBN has just come out with a series of articles on the increasing exposure of ‘godmen’ in India.

What will not be so obvious is the courage of those in journalism, the judiciary, police forces and so on who are putting themselves in danger when they attempt to confront the forces of corruption.

The links to the CNN-IBN reports are immediately below, and beneath these are links (with quotes) to a number of articles in Call for Media and Government Investigation of Sathya Sai Baba. These span many months, and hold out the hope that the forces of anti-corruption and of those who uphold the justifiable Indian pride in her great and varied culture will be able to triumph.

Even as I write there are reports that India has the best human rights record in Asia. This will not have been achieved without the cost of tremendous courage and sacrifice – much of it never recordable.

With India on her way to becoming a superpower, a great contribution she can make – one that can indeed shame those countries which flaunt their democratic traditions – is to clean up her ‘house’ and set an example of flourishing democratic achievements. For decades, the profoundly failed guru, Sathya Sai Baba, has been saying that he will first clean up his ‘own backyard’. He has made all too little dent but India does not need him. She has, down millennia, furnished the worthy aims that he uncontroversially preaches. She has long abounded in great exemplars. It is goods delivery well in excess of all the preaching by her sometimes shady and failed gurus that is needed.

In her rich and marvelous multiculture, these qualities can be asserted by any irrespective of culture, class or creed .

Is Sai Baba’s Governmental Influence ‘Miraculous’?

Yesterday’s blog, HERE, noted the Indian magazine Business Standard news current report that the Sathya Sai Central Trust is putting Sai Baba’s Puttaparthi airport up for sale. It was revealing to find an old 1998 Indian Express report that saw corrupt links between Sai Baba’s chief representatives and a then Civil Aviation boss. Most Indian publications have long suffered their publisher’s censorship against reports adverse to Sathya Sai Baba. As the Editor of one of India’s leading newspapers told me: Sai Baba is too powerful, with so many devotees all over India. Likely to have been all too little noticed, then, was a report filed in the Indian Express in February 1998 by reporter Swati Chaturvedi. It points to corrupt origins in the sanctioning of the Sathya Sai airport. What the Swati Chaturvedi article does not mention is that the then Civil Aviation Secretary, M.K. Kaw, is a Sathya Sai Baba devotee.

Sathya Sai Baba’s Un Divine Downfall

Quotes

Sai Baba’s ’showman empire’ is worth many highly unaccountable billions. Frequently, they pour to his Sathya Sai Central Trust from your country and mine. (See Rediff.com reference article listed below, Sai Baba Exchequer Worth Billions. Many Countries Donate)
…………..
But now, Sai Baba has been increasingly exposed to the world on television by the BBC, DR (Denmark), AZUL (Argentina), CBC (Canada), ABC,  SBS (Australia), and in the press – India Today, Times of London, Telegraph, Guardian, Age, Australian Financial Times, and newspapers in several parts of Europe, Canada, and elsewhere. This does not mean that any of these major institutions did a perfect job, or that there do not abound plenty of compelling stories, some of them tragic indeed.
…………..
Surprising openings in a long-muzzled Indian media occurred November 2006, when Paul Lewis’s story broke in The Guardian – The Indian living god, the pedophilia claims and the Duke of Edinburgh awards. It raised concerns about the nexus between the Duke of Edinburgh Awards and the UK Sai youth, on their way in large numbers to see Sathya Sai Baba.
…………..

Awards, owing to, in this sort of issue, a not very experienced or competent UK CEO, Peter Westgarth – see HERE – was slow off the mark. However, after very high level representations from our side, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme trustees and Prince Philip’s Private Secretary

sir-miles-hunt-davis.jpg

Brigadier Sir Miles Hunt-Davies KCVO, CBE, realized that a serious matter was at hand. Questions were also raised by some powerful citizens, including a former Home Minister, Tom Sackville. The Duke of Edinburgh Awards required of Dr G. Venkataraman, at an official Sai Baba website to take down the triumphant – but absurdly mistaken – information that the Duke of Edinburgh Award had been awarded to Sai Baba himself. See link below for: A Duke Stops An Emperor. Edinburgh Routs Sai Baba

…………..

Dr G. Venkataraman, formerly a member of India’s highly secret nuclear establishment, is Sai Baba’s deputy world head, who also directs Sai Baba’s international 7 days 24 hours satellite radio service via the WorldSpace international corporation. According to the Wikipedia entry for ‘Sathya Sai Baba’, its Director Dr Michael Nobel is “one of the patrons for the radio network” and “said that the radio network would spread Sathya Sai Baba’s message of global harmony and peace”. See links at foot for Sathya Sai Baba’s Deputy Head, Dr G. Venkataraman, Speaks of “Mr Idi Amin”. (With little sense of time’s passage the Wiki article says, absurdly, that Michael Nobel is the son of Alfred Nobel, who founded The Nobel Foundation and after whom the Nobel Prize is named)
…………..

On November 4, 2006, The Guardian ran Paul Lewis’s story (see above). In a development that occurred quite without The Guardian seeking it, in November 2006, The Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) managed to get a few major Indian media to take the feed on the Paul Lewis story. There have been decades of censorship of material adverse to the politically and religiously too-hot-to-handle Sai Baba and his vast and, in India, extraordinarily powerful Sathya Sai Organization. This feed also went to parts of Asia and the Middle East. It has been an absurd situation that NRI’s (Non Resident Indians) have been accessed in the media of many countries with large Indian diaspora to critical information about Sathya Sai Baba, when Indians in their own country have been denied.
…………..

The present writer (email:  bpittard(at)optusnet.com) can provide journalists and other investigators with a slew of media and academic contacts who can verify that the Sathya Sai Organization is a prime example of a cult in hiding from the media and others wishing to examine it. This is why the BBC obtained a difficult to gain sanction from its senior managment and Legals to use a hidden camera on the world chairman of Sai Baba’s orgnanization, Dr Michael Goldstein of Covina, California. (See BBC video footage link, below)bbc-clip-dr-micael-goldstein-gets-angry.jpg
…………..

The George W. Bush medical advisor Professor Kanwaljeet ‘Sunny’ Anand, the birth scientist, stands as one of many examples around Sai Baba of those who desert their normal intelligence and range into the empirically absurd. There is a naked discrepancy which they, including Sai Baba’s more intellectual followers, see-but-don’t-see, as in Hans Christian Anderson’s story The Emperor’s New Clothes
…………..

Nor has he been able to honor many years of promises that he is about to travel to other parts of the world – see article link below, Will World Accept Sai Baba. He says yes. Very Soon
…………..

Read his discourses – simply that – and the contradictions, the absurdly non-scientific and blundering historical statements (now excised where possible by his editors, but archived by academics Robert Priddy and Brian Steel, see below) will demolish him.
…………..

Wide-scale derision, not unmixed with scorn and some helpless laughter and refusal by civic, government, political and religious bodies to cooperate with the Sathya Sai Organization, which attempts to link up with respected mainstream institutions, will topple this ‘God’, and demolish his empire
…………..

Sai Baba Fails To Appear In Moon, IANS Reports

Posted by Barry Pittard on October 5, 2007

In the last hours, many Sai Baba devotees have received yet another of many setbacks to expectations that he would perform, as he has so many times promised, this or that great miracle.

sai-baba-fails-to-appear-on-moon.jpg

Of course, my dear reader may have noticed that at least Sai Baba’s afro hairdo has been seen quite clearly on the moon on not a few occasions. On the other hand, his hair has considerably thinned in recent years, despite his prophecy that he would not age after his 60th birthday.

In this case, IANS (Indo Asian News Service) reports:

“It all started when an official of the Sai Trust announced that the godman would make a “moon appearance” 6-7 pm and asked devotees to proceed towards the airport”.

Several news services have released the IANS (Indo Asian News Service) feed, including Sify.com HERE:

Sai Baba’s moon miracle fails
Friday, 05 October , 2007, 00:05

Puttaparthi: Thousands of people gathered at the airport here on Thursday night after word spread that controversial godman Satya Sai Baba would be “sighted” on the moon – but returned disappointed when the “miracle” did not happen.

The 81-year-old Sai Baba was also present at the airport and later returned to his ‘Prshanti Nilayam’ ashram here in Anantapur district.

It all started when an official of the Sai Trust announced that the godman would make a “moon appearance” 6-7 pm and asked devotees to proceed towards the airport.

Thousands of the Baba’s devotees from neighbouring villages rushed to the airport but were disappointed as a cloud cover hid the moon. They waited for an hour before dispersing.

Police had a tough time in clearing the traffic on the airport road to enable the Baba to return to his abode amid tight security. There was no word from Sai Trust as to why the ‘miracle’ failed to materialise.

His devotees believed that the clouds played spoilsport while rationalists termed it an attempt by the Sai Trust to revive the Baba’s waning popularity. IANS.

Sai Baba Fails To Grant Great Moon Vision. ……………….

Robert Priddy – who goes on to demolish the story with some real, as opposed to lunatic, moon facts – writes in his article Sai Moon Man that RA. Ganapati, the Tamil scholar and much-read hagiographer of Sai Baba, wrote that on December 8, 1973, on a stop with Sathya Sai Baba between the Puttaparthi ashram (Andhra Pradesh) and Brindavan, Whitefield via Bangalore) ashram (Karnataka), devotees threw stones at a wood-apple tree and brought down one unripe fruit, and quotes Ganapati:

“Svami bent down and picked it up. Holding it between the thumb and forefinger He said, “Here is the moon”! When He closed His palm over the piece for an instant and opened it again, the fruit was no longer found. Instead an unusual article was in his hand. It was a translucent sphere. The sunlight was gorgeously reflected out of its surface. Though as a whole it was luminiscent there were several dim and even dark spots inside. Multi-hued veins of minerals could also be seen. Superficially smooth-surfaced, it revealed elevations and depressions inside.

“The mini-moon, made up of all the ingredients of the moon”, observed Baba.
Only a few days before, the newspapers had carried photographs of both sides of the moon transmitted by spacecraft. All their features could be precisely perceived in this three-D-mini-moon. More than that, it was refracting the spectrum of colours in sunshine. The party enjoyed the picnic in the glades. Svami held up the mini-moon finally to sunlight. The solar rays glancing off the outer rim sprayed gold. “Do you see the moon rise?” asked Sai, as pleasing as the moon itself. With one more folding and unfolding of His hand, the mini-moon set! It had returned to its old wood-apple birth! (
Baba: Sathya Sai, by Ra. Ganapati, p. 83f).

Note: Indo Asian News Service has fed news that has helped break the long decades of most of the Indian media to run any story inimical to Sathya Sai Baba. See Paul Lewis’s article The Indian living god, the paedophilia claims and the Duke of Edinburgh awards in one of the top British newspapers The Guardian, which, amazingly, IANS was able to get into sections of the Indian press previously silent on many Sai Baba-related scandals.

Will India’s New Backlash Against Corruption Lash Sathya Sai Baba?

Posted by Barry Pittard on January 24, 2007

In India and many other countries, critics of Sathya Sai Baba and his core leaders wish to see proper government, police and judicial actions. Those who defend him in public like Dr. G. Venkataraman, head of Radio Sai International and deputy chairman of the world Sathya Sai Organisation, badly represent this aim. They conceal the fact that many well-reputed and competent men and women, including top leaders (some resigned, some summarily cast out) once esteemed throughout Sai Baba’s worldwide organisation, have investigated the allegations, been horrified, and called for proper duty-of-car and accountability. However, given the extremity of the spiritual, moral and ethical betrayals, one may trust that truth and conscience will eventually force the issue. Organised former devotees worldwide are, and have long been, willing to face the most rigorous third party questioning by any competent authority. The Sathya Sai Organisation is, Soviet-style, impervious to outside questioning. Documentaries viewed by millions such as UK Channel 4′ ‘The Guru Busters’, The BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’, DR (Denmark)’s ‘Seduced’, AZUL TV’s ‘The Sinful God’ and other exposures by leading media in the world have convinced all but blinded apologists and the ill-informed of this fact.

“Watershed year for Indian law” reports BBC’s Sanjoy Majumder
“For many, 2006 has been a watershed in Indian legal history”, states Sanjoy Majumder, Friday, 5 January 2007, BBC News, Delhi:
For the first time, a serving cabinet minister (Shibu Soren), was given life imprisonment for murder. Under a fortnight later, a cricket star and MP (Navjot Singh Sidhu) was jailed for manslaughter. Majumder reports “A recent study suggests that nearly a quarter of the country’s MPs are facing criminal charges ranging from murder to extortion and even rape”, and that “India’s courts are estimated to have a backlog of some two million cases”. A welcome Indian “Backlash Was Born” reports Tim Sullivan, Associated Press
Recently, another Indian example of how backlashes against corruption can erupt occurred. Because of corruption in India’s judicial system, the 24-year old son of a powerful and wealthy politician in India, who shot a young woman, was released. Key witnesses who withdrew their testimony suddenly got rich. But that other side of India gives hope. Tim Sullivan (Thur., Mar/09/2006) Associated Press reported, “What surprised India was its own reaction: Protesters took to the streets, holding candlelight vigils and waving signs calling for justice; newspapers have kept the story on the front page day after day; officials from the president to the capital’s police chief have called for a review of the investigation. In a country that had all but resigned itself to its barely functioning legal system, a backlash was born”.

To be sure, Sathya Sai Baba, profoundly protected by India’s power brokers irrespective of what party is in power, has not faced court to answer many allegations. These include serial sexual molestation of boys and young men and other crimes such as complicity in the police killings that occurred in his bedroom, June 6, 1993. The latter incident was described to the BBC by V.P.B. Nair, former Home Secretary of Andhra Pradesh, as “absolute cold-blooded murder”. Brief video clips at this link here.  The BBC transcript of ‘The Secret Swami’ is available here.  Police corruption is also widespread in India, as the recent horrendous case of serial pedophilia and murders in Noida, Delhi, exemplifies – see link here.

Widespread corruption of the police and judiciary in India
If a corrupt elite in India can protect one young man and nine co-accused, how much more so does political-judicial patronage favor one to whom countless Indian power brokers, and millions of others around the world, bow as God fully incarnate? Sai Baba is also patronised simply because of vote-catching and other political expediencies, huge trade and financial deals with his many mega rich devotees, and cronyism. For trade advantages, it served corrupt regimes when senior officials in the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office told Tony Colman (when he was Labor MP for Putney, UK) that the government does not wish to rock the boat with India. Interests sans conscience were likewise fulfilled when the US State Department, after many highly credible US citizens have made extensive submissions to it, issued a travel warning in November 23, 2001 that pointed to Sai Baba’s ashram but did not name him, until the might of the BBC extracted a confirmation in May 2004. To see how Sai Baba and his managers have so successfully identified his own interests with India’s interests, see: ‘Does UNESCO Really Protect the Young’ at this link.

High echelon judges flout Law to support Sai Baba
For an inkling of how justice can be thwarted by two Indian Supreme Court judges, G.B. Pattanaik and R.C. Lahoti, partial to Sai Baba, see HERE:

A high profile Sai Baba devotee judge in the Andhra Pradesh High Court,Y. V. Anjaneyulu can, just as flagrantly, put down a lawsuit by B. Premanand, India’s famous ‘guru buster’, about gold taxes. Judge Anjaneyulu held that the gold Sai Baba produces is manifested from a divine source, and cannot therefore be taxed. Of course, this judgement defies Indian law, which is secular, and founded on the British Westminster system.

Another miscarriage of justice occurred in Orange County Court in California, USA. A courageous young man, Alaya Rahm, gives an account of extensive sexual abuse of himself when a teenager by Sai Baba. For the last few years, he has been strongly supported in speaking out by his parents. His father is Al Rahm, formerly one of the highest profile leaders in the US Sathya Sai Baba Organisation. Yet Alaya Rahm’s lawsuit against the directors of the Sathya Sai Baba Society in the USA came badly unstuck. According to his lawyer, William Brelsford, the organisation was structured legalistically so as to avoid lawsuits against itself. See the lawyer’s statements and those of the family and supportive international former Sai Baba devotees here.

Note: My advice, in considering the Rahm case, is to avoid pro bono lawyers unless they are real hotshots who do their homework well beforehand. I do not think that Alaya Rahm was served at all well, nor do lawyers from the USA and other countries who are aquainted with the case.

Ullrich Zimmermann’s testimony of Sai Baba perpetrating oral sex on him
Like Alaya Rahm, over the years, a number of young men, from a number of countries, have come forward with accounts of sexual molestation by Sai Baba. Most of them do not wish to go public. Former devotees (not always working in co-ordination) have collected affidavits, the number of which legal counsel have advised not to discuss publicly. David Savill, assistant producer of ‘The Secret Swami’, told me that the BBC unearthed a number of other compelling cases which were not of that hefty number that we had on our files. There has just been (January 2007) – entirely without our group’s knowledge that it had been made seven years ago and was now going to air – a US television interview of a young German man, Ullrich Zimmermann, who very articulately recounts sexual abuse by Sathya Sai Baba including (as in so many other accounts from around the world) oral sex performed on him by his – then! – spiritual master:

Indian media and adverse News about Sai Baba
Last November, the Indo-Asian News Service broke through to sections of the Indian news media. It reported on Paul Lewis’s article in The Guardian, Nov.3 – “The Indian living god, the paedophilia claims and the Duke of Edinburgh awards”

Hitherto, for many years, almost all the Indian media refused to publish adverse news or serious questioning about Sai Baba and his organisation’s leaders. Almost exclusively, it was Non-Indian Residents (NRI’s) who came to hear of the seriousness of the allegations. They saw television documentaries such as ‘Guru Busters’, (UK Channel 4, 1995), ‘Seduced’ (DR, Denmark, 2001, repackaged as ‘Seduced by Sai Baba’ by SBS, Australia, 2004), ‘The Sinful God’ (AZUL TV, Argentina, 2002), ‘The Secret Swami’ (BBC, 2004) or articles in leading newspapers of the UK, Canada, Australia, Scandinavian countries, Holland, Germany, etc. Have Indian Editors suddenly developed a conscience? More likely, they now realise that news of the many allegations facing Sai Baba’s is too difficult to suppress, and that the foreign media has done what it has so lamentably failed to do, with an honorable exception being India in its cover story, Dec. 4, 2000:

Is Sathya Sai Baba beyond exposure?
Not that blighted Justice afflicts India alone. Charles Dickens called the law “an ass”. In Western countries, there are T-shirts which, symptomatically, suggest the timelessness of the sentiment in Shakespeare’s line: “the first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers”. Grand scale political patronage always existed. But vision and transformation have, too – including an occasional lawyer and politician. We would be far worse off were it not so. It may indeed be children who, because we held out against the madness, grow up to wield a better sort power fuelled by a better sort of wisdom.

There were those, including within our own ranks, who insisted that Sai Baba was beyond exposure. Had we espoused that self-defeating attitude, the more than six years of persistent work by former devotees and other critics would not have led to the present position. This is that Sai Baba and his servitors now stand exposed to millions, with other projects in preparation. There is the ‘court’ of conscience and of better informed world opinion. There is also time for the facts of what former devotees attest to penetrate to devotees, who can then see the truth of what we state on the Internet and elsewhere (but not always spell out because of sensitivity and security issues). This is of necessity slow because a whole world-view and a psychological dependency come crashing down.

Will the conscience-side of India, reported by Sanjoy Majumder and Tim Sullivan, emerge and expose Sathya Sai Baba and those gurus like him who bring India into such terrible disrepute throughout the world? That would be a good test of whether she deserves to be a super power, or is yet another materialistic State crassly bent on material gain, for all its leaders’ common boasts about her spiritual glory and destiny.

From early 1999, he was foremost among those, including scores of well-known (sometimes still then) devotees who called for independent, third party investigation of Sathya Sai Baba, and of those servitors who profoundly cover up for him. The series of campaigns that emerged are sometimes known as ‘the exposé’.

A reflection on the BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ which had far more indicting documentation against Sathya Sai Baba (80+ hours of footage!) but chose largely follow the story of just one family, no doubt for focus.
