A Positive Approach To Overcoming Racism: An RUA Project In Sydney, Australia

Yesterday’s news story in The Australian (see full article below) about the ‘Respect, Understanding, Acceptance’ (RUA) project among some schools in Sydney, Australia, is inspiring. The newspaper reports:

NINE years ago, a Jewish girl was walking home from school on Sydney’s north shore when a busload of students from a neighbouring school roared past her and began shouting racist slurs.

Rather than insist on harsh punishments against the students involved, the state’s Jewish leadership proposed a novel solution of bringing the distraught girl face-to-face with her anti-Semitic attackers.

“We started out with 20 Catholic students, 20 Jewish and 20 Muslim students and got them talking to each other,” Vic Alhadeff, chief executive of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, said.

“The students were able to ask direct questions about why people with different cultures or faiths or backgrounds engage in their different cultural practices. It was an enormous benefit and an opportunity for the students.”

Almost a decade later the program – now labelled Respect, Understanding, Acceptance – involves more than 1500 Sydney school students each year, brought together in groups of 100 or 200 to learn about each other and to discuss issues of racism.

Sarva Dharma SymbolsThe Sathya Sai Organization has long made much of the so-called ‘All Faiths’ credo (Sarva Dharma).

Sarva Dharma US StyleClearly, it does not denigrate various faiths, and to this extent cannot be regarded as a force of active division and conflict. In fact, Sai Baba centers teach children the main elements of the major world religions, and many Sai centers invite practitioners of those religions to give introductory talks, whether to children or adults.

Worldwide, a great many worthy organizations do extraordinary work.  But those familiar with Sai Baba and his Indian leaders’ talks will recall gross exaggerations about his impact around the world. Sathya Sai Baba and his leaders had their chance to make good their claims about bringing religions into mutual respect and harmony. In neither India nor the rest of the world, has Puttaparthi has been visible as a broker of any remarkable peace and harmony.

However, Sai Baba followers from other countries know but – as befits the cultic mind in denial – turn a deaf ear to the extraordinary, tall claims. The claims do great injustice to the countless people and groups doing signal work for a better world.

Throughout many decades, despite all the ‘Sarva Dharma’ talk within Sai Baba circles, the overwhelming influence seen at Puttaparthi is classical Hinduism. In a systemically vague notion, this, Sathya Sai Baba proclaimed, he would restore, and much of the achievement he would fulfil in his own lifetime. He achieved nothing of the sort, a fact which his devotees adroitly ignore. See: Sai Baba claims all power & the universe is in his hand (video clip). Posted by robertpriddy on August 1, 2011

Even the most diligent search fails to turn up evidence of any significant Sathya Sai Baba impact in, for example, the ecumenical world, or in international fora for solving key challenges like war, racism, genocide, world poverty, environmental destruction, and so on.

Almost a decade later the program – now labelled Respect, Understanding, Acceptance – involves more than 1500 Sydney school students each year, brought together in groups of 100 or 200 to learn about each other and to discuss issues of racism.

The program is touted as a way of helping young Australians break the cycles of racism demonstrated by recent incidents involving ABC presenter Jeremy Fernandez — abused with his daughter on a bus in February — and AFL star Adam Goodes, who was branded an “ape” by a 13-year-old female spectator in Melbourne at the weekend.

“Clearly, some racism which one encounters is coming from the home, and that is where the real challenge is. We must counter negative messages, the bigoted messages coming from the home,” Mr Alhadeff said. “There is no such thing as a bystander. If you’re a bystander, you’re part of the problem.”

Yesterday’s RUA gathering at the University of NSW allowed students from Granville Boys High – a public school in Sydney’s strongly-Islamic west – to come face-to-face with pupils from Brigidine College and Masada College, a Catholic girls school and Jewish school on the city’s affluent north shore.

Brigidine student Maddi Breen, 16, said the meeting gave her an opportunity to meet and mingle with the city’s Muslims, who are a rare sight in St Ives, where her school and Masada are located.

“I don’t think we have any Islamic people at my school. We learn about Islam when we study religion, but this is giving us a chance to meet and understand each other,” she said.

Granville’s Mahmoud Skef, 15, said he had learned that Jews prayed three times a day.

Muslims make up 18.5 per cent of the population in Granville, compared with 0.6 per cent in St Ives. Jews account for 13 per cent of St Ives residents, compared with 0.3 per cent in Granville.

150 students come together for intercultural experience

Respect - Understanding - Acceptance ABOUT 150 Jewish, Muslim, Armenian, Aboriginal and Christian students from four north shore schools came together at the Galstaun College in Ingleside last week for the first event of an innovative three-part intercultural program titled “Respect, Understanding and Acceptance”. Devised by the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies Education Secretariat, the program brings together students from the Galstaun Armenian College, Masada College (a Jewish school), the Australian Islamic College of Sydney and St Paul’s Catholic College, Manly.

The students met for a day of discussion and multimedia performances.

Guest speaker Dai Le, Community Relations Manager for the NSW Liberal Party, told the students of her treacherous journey to Australia on a tiny boat escaping Vietnam. She stressed the importance of building bridges between the diverse cultures which call this country home. NSW Jewish Board of Deputies CEO Vic Alhadeff said the program encourages the students “to respect each others’ differences and to have the guts to speak out when you see someone being isolated, marginalised or discriminated against.”

The second event of the program will be held at the Sydney Jewish Museum on Harmony Day in May and the third at Masada College in October. Both will feature interactive sessions with Jewish, Muslim, Armenian, Aboriginal and Catholic speakers.

Clusters of the RUA program involving other cultural and faith groups will also run in the east and south west of Sydney in 2010.

Hearts Yearning

Posted by Barry Pittard on December 24, 2009

May we rise above the shadows of the divides and see the same Light and the same yearning in the hearts of all, however differently expressed

——————————————————-

Note: My preference on reading any of the central, archetypal stories in the sacred or other key literatures of the different cultures is to approach them via the heart. Intellect can do a service; however, once the heart and the imagination are out of the equation, there is the risk of entering the realms of what is doctrinaire, dogmatic and theological. When there is any claim to a superiority of one path over another, there is the instant throwing up of fortresses, watchtowers and crocodile-infested moats. Happily, there are many from faiths and those not given to faith who get along very well in workplaces and wider communities. Perhaps what they embody provides a role model that the world might well value.

Rock-a-bye This Babe. A Christmas Lullaby

Rock-a-bye this babe, this babe in your heart keep
Whose love is awake though the babe is asleep
Take him, hold him in your heart till he wakes
He’s new born for us care-worn, O see the difference he makes

This Christmas, this babe, so deep in your heart keep
Whose love is a Feast fit to feed a mean street
Sing him, sing him, with a voice sweet and clear
Fling out the darkness, fling out the fear!

This Christmas, this babe, so deep in your heart keep
Whose love is a Feast fit to feed a mean street
Sing him, sing him, with a voice sweet and clear
Fling out the darkness, fling out the fear!

Oh, rock-a-bye this babe, so deep in your heart keep
Whose love is awake and yet this babe is asleep
You take him, you hold him in your heart till he wakes
He’s new born for us care-worn, O see the difference he makes

Hearts Yearning

Hearts yearning, hearts burning

Three wise men searched for one more wise

Who opens hearts, who purifies

Hearts yearing, hearts burning

In sleep no peace, just this tossing-turning

On earth no peace, just relentless burning

Where the bright star pointed and alighted

Where the beasts in the chill cold seek some bed

Even in some crowded cattle shed

And in all those parts sprang a sacred fire

In the wise men's hearts sang an angel choir

Alleluia. All-ay-ay lu ia

Hearts yearning, feet burning

The donkey rests from the frosted road

The jest of man, though it bears his load

Heart yearning, such yearning!

Its soft eyes glow from the starlit baby

It knows of the load of that gracious lady

So blessed though exhausted

Where the bright star hovered and alighted

Where the beasts in the chill cold seek some bed

In this simple, little cattle shed

And in all these parts sprang a mystic fire

In that donkey's heart sang the angelic choir

Alleluia. Alleluia

Troops stamping, troops tramping!

This little family took dread flight

From Herod's men in the depths of night

Troops burning, troops, burning!

Deep red stained - the swords would kill that yearning

On the earth for the end to the ceaseless burning

All blood-red their footsteps

As they went mass-killing all the infant lads

Like beasts in the dead night feast on lambs

So did Rome's puppet, with his bullies and his shams

Wormwood was no cure for Herod and his ire

And his writhing fear there would come a Messiah

Starlight led sore footsteps

Where the bright star pointed and alighted

Where the beasts in the chill cold sought some bed

Even in some crowded cattle shed

Where in all earth's parts sprang a sacred fire

Where we would all sing as an angel choir

In all our hearts – an angel choir

In all our hearts – an angel choir

In all our hearts – this angel choir …. etc., …..

Sathya Sai Baba Is Fast-ailing

Posted by Barry Pittard on August 4, 2009

What will the fast-ailing Sathya Sai Baba do? Rub oil or vibhuti on the surface of his multiple infirmities, and do all that he has for so long promised? That is to say:

  • Bring the world to him, even before he dies
  • Harmonize the world’s major religions
  • Save the world from enormous catastrophes
  • Lift a whole mountain range
  • Travel the world
  • Fly through the air
  • Put humanity on what he calls ‘the royal road’ to righteousness
  • And so much more ….

To listen to his carefully hand-picked and carefully-groomed speakers, his fame has spread to virtually every clime. This claim is patently untrue. Ask people on crowded streets in many countries do they know the name Nelson Mandela, or the late Princess Diana. Or whether they can immediately visualize those such as the Pope, Barach Obama, the late Michael Jackson, and so on, and they will instantly affirm that they do.

Do leaders in the interfaith movement feature him or his emissaries as notable in their publications and websites? And yet the following edifice, sited amid the great opulence of his Puttaparthi ashram, displays his symbol (the so-called ‘Sarva Dharma Chakra’ or All Faiths motif):

sarva-dharma-stupa-and-poorna-chandra-hall-puttaparthi

Sarva Dharma Stupa, Puttaparthi. In background, the huge auditorium Poorna Chandra Hall

sai-babas-symbol-of-world-faiths.jpg

Do we see world leaders in politics, religion and so forth beating a track to his door? What do we see?

We see him using visitors to the ashram – not necessarily Sai devotees, either – who are of this or that religion. For propaganda purposes, these individuals are used to give the appearance that educated members of other faiths are accepting his “greatness”. One such use was made of a visiting rabbi from Israel. When I reported on this, Sai Baba’s proxy defender on the Internet stated that I was anti-Semitic. That the Sathya Sai Organization allows its members, some of them prominent in the Sai movement, to assist this effectively conscienceless individual can only still further damage its standing.

Sathya Sai Baba’s official Puttaparthi website shows that he also uses others who have little or no representative power in various faith organizations to make it appear that his evangel is winning hearts and minds in the different faiths around the world. There is a simple test that media, scholars and other investigators can apply:  ask the leaders of the major faiths whether they would lend their organizations’ name and authority to Sathya Sai Baba or his movement. Those Sai Baba protagonists who attack former followers for pointing out the long list of anomalies and cover ups of crimes and spiritual betrayals find it easier to use ad hominem and other profoundly dishonest tactics to deflect forms of questioning commonly regarded as essential to intellectual and moral integrity.

The below – official – text, and many other texts like it, are not likely to stand the test of time. Critical writings of prominent commentators as Robert Priddy, Brian Steel, Timothy Conway Ph.D, and the work of many former Sathya Sai devotee networks – with a most notable activity by the late Glen Meloy and also Hari Sampath and other critics via major world media – have already played a role in ensuring that the Avatar of Avatars – pretendu – has been highly exposed. I may add, from my own personal and close witness that the work of the latter two, although it has had low visibility on the Internet, has been of enormous, indeed incalculable, dimensions.

Huge Sai Baba Gaffes

Posted by Barry Pittard on March 3, 2007

Note, 26 April 2010:   No amount of faith-blinded rationalizing can successfully elude the striking fact of Sathya Sai Baba’s many gaffes.  I re-run this article of early 2007, and trust that further circulation of such compelling documentation will result in ever more widely exposing those aspects of Sathya Sai Baba that his often frenetic and over-worked minders go all out to hide or minimize. Some of his actions are very absurd and self-contradictory.

The readership includes those who are, in swelling numbers, coming out of the Sathya Sai Baba cult. Typically, many have taken a long time to begin to sort their lives out. Emerging from a cult in which one’s deepest hopes and dreams have been invested is not easy. Some are shattered, and we know of suicides.  Some plunge into other cult figures. Some grasp at the comfort of mainstream religions or philosphies. Some learn to sit on slippery fences, and whistle in the dark. Some hide from themselves and others just how much they have been affected. Many have slunk off without formally resigning. The numbers of westerners going to Sathya Sai Baba’s ashrams has reduced by many thousands.

But his resolute defenders cannot hold back the existence of commonsense and the spirit of many individuals sooner or later doing some serious examination of their often long-held concerns.

————————————————

In one of the great deceptions of history, Sai Baba has misled millions of worshippers in many countries, including an astounding array of followers in the sciences, medicine, the arts, education, government, the judiciary, politics, industry, and so on.

A few quotes from the simultaneous English translation of the Sai Baba’s Christmas Discourse, 1996, indicate that palpable nonsense in some of his pronouncements must be added to the “divine” attributes of one who would be King of Kings.

James Redmond of the USA was for many years Sathya Sai Baba’s official videographer. Finally, he was able to see from examination of his vast array of film footage the many instances of Sai Baba faking materializations. There is another kind of Sai Baba deception that does not get into printed material. Fortunately, it is preserved on video, the provenance of which can not be faulted by Sai Baba and the Sathya Sai Organization.

The nonsensical material deserves much wider notice than when in February 2002 the Australian linguistic scholar Brian Steel
http://bdsteel.tripod.com/More/Nonsense.htm
first drew attention to some of the extraordinary inanities in Sai Baba’s discourses – preserved in video materials but quickly expunged from the written records. These acute embarrassments to Sai Baba are excised by Sai Baba editors before they get into publications like Sanathana Sarathi, the official Sai Baba magazine that is distributed to some hundred and fifty countries, not to mention other publications from Sai Baba’s very busy press. That this process of removal of embarrassing material from his discourses goes on I had my own proof when I was working as a publisher’s editor at Sai Towers, Puttaparthi. I once myself had a hand in reconstruction/excision of a terribly jumbled Sai Baba statements about ghosts, which I sought help to unscramble from (the late) V.K Narasimhan, a warm and dear friend, who had been one of the most famous and respected editors in India and then Editor of Sanathana Sarathi. He too had edited out the embarrassments in his version for the upcoming edition of Sathathana Sarathi. I may add that I was working from the penciled translation by Professor Anil Kumar himself, Sai Baba’s official translator, who used to slip (or I think recall on this occasion actually hand-deliver) his translation over to Sai Towers. Also called in at Sai Towers on the rescue operation was Sai Baba’s Professor of English, Sandeepan Chatterjee. On another occasion, a whole issue of the expensively produced – which I was essentially editing (on the basis of service, not as paid work) had to be ditched – a large number of copies destined for worldwide distribution. Because of this small bit of print, the whole magazine had to be reprinted, a mammoth operation. This was because Sai Baba wanted to suppress a prophecy he had just made at Kodai Kanal. Of the Redmond material, Brian Steel comments on and quotes the egregious Sai Baba blunders:

“NONE of this astonishingly confused information was finally printed in the official version in Sathya Sai Speaks, XXIX, but in a note on page 393 we learn that:

“[Bhagavan gave a brief account of the Jewish concept of the creation of the cosmos and referred to the birth of Jesus as the son of Mary and Joseph.]”

Doubtless, the editors saw that SB had had a ‘bad day’, but readers of their version will never know that”.

“Three hundred and fifty years B.C., before Christ, Jews lived. However, among Jews, there were religions such as Islam and Christianity. People of that land, they are all Jews. That land is the birthplace of both the religions, Islam and Christianity. The Hebrew language was very prominent. This Hebrew language is more or less equal to our Sanskrit. …”

“Christianity is not just 2,000 years in its origin. It was there even before Christ, 350 years. There the divinity is explained very clearly.”

“The name and the fame of Jesus Christ have spread far and wide. Here, at this moment, there are two schools of thought. The first group of thought – Roman Catholics. There is another group that fought with this group. This group is called Protestants. As they protested, they are Protestants. So among Jews there are these two groups: Catholics and Protestants. The difference of opinion has increased day by day. This led to Jesus, whose life was in danger. Jews there in Jerusalem did not permit Jesus to go there. Like this, religious conflict and fighting was ever on the rise. There were 250 schools of thought, divisions there. They also monopolized certain countries.”

“Because of so many groups there, they all attempted even to harm Jesus. Romans on one side. Catholics on the other side. Luther on another side. There were so many groups that went on changing. All these differences are based on violence, and that led to madness. Because of this attachment to group affiliations, naturally there was conflict and fighting.”

“Religious affiliation leads to ego. This led to confusion among them as to what Jesus said right or wrong.”

Is this the Avatar of Avatars – or a schoolboy vainly trying to write a potted history, conflating early Christian history with Martin Luther’s 16th Century Protestant revolt?

Brian Steel concludes:

“More seriously, perhaps, such idiosyncratic pronouncements cast a very heavy shadow over Sai Baba’s general credibility and even his thought processes – whatever his other powers and characteristics”.

Former Sai Baba devotees worldwide are ready, as indeed many times before over several years, to submit our credentials and findings to bona fide independent third party adjudicators.

In an attempt to obtain proper investigation of the allegations against Sathya Sai Baba and his powerful and influential worldwide organization, we have closely cooperated with major world media and other reputed agencies and institutions. He and the entity he calls the “Divine” instrument for bringing about the greatest spiritual revolution the world has ever seen, the Sathya Sai Organization, have not.

International billions flow to Sai Baba

In August 16, 2003. the Rediff news agency reported:
“The largest recipient of foreign contribution was Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust — Rs 88.18 crore (Rs 881.8 million)”
