Police, Security and Sathya Sai Baba

Posted by Barry Pittard on December 13, 2010

An array of media, scholars, government services, civic institutions, and many others read our writings. I have extracted the following links related to police and security from a Links page with brief commentaries on articles. That page has been assiduously compiled by Robert Priddy, and contains links to many articles he and I, and any other extensive writer such as Brian Steel, have written on an array of topics concerning Sathya Sai Baba and his cult.

Note: Please kindly report any errors,  updates, or suggest improvements. These overviews are very far from exhaustive … See contact details under:  Barry Pittard, at bottom of right hand sidebar.

ON VISITING THE SAI BABA ASHRAMS Many difficulties, disappointments and potential dangers – up to and including murder – face those who visit Sathya Sai Baba ashrams. Tight security is used against visitors to protect the fearful Guru-God and discrimination of non-ethnic Indian followers, especially Westerners, has become rife. Judging by countries I know well, the current list of over 200 names of former members or active followers registered represents only perhaps 5% of those who have left Sathya Sai baba’s organization and movement, as most do not wish to speak out and be demonized – many wish to continue to visit India in safety.

Failings in Indian Justice – by ex-Chief Election Commissioner T.N. Why Has Sathya Sai Baba Not Faced The Indian Justice System?

Posted by Barry Pittard on January 14, 2010

There is a question that keeps getting asked. It is one never answered by pro Sai interests – other than with a superficiality and ad hominem attacks resoundingly obvious to serious and probing investigators:

Given the grave seriousness of the allegations of serial sexual abuse of boys and young men from countries around the world, why have these matters not been dealt with through the Indian justice system?

But – what Indian justice system?!

Essentially, the answer is that Sathya Sai Baba is powerfully protected by Indian governmental corruption, irrespective of which political regime has the upper hand. His devotee base is vast. In 2001, the celebrated Indian advocate Kamini Jaiswal (who was a lawyer for the famous ‘Bandit Queen’ Phoolan Devi) attempted to mount, pro bono, a case against Sai Baba on behalf of a former Sai Baba devotee, Hari Sampath. apparently a former member of Sathya Sai Baba’s intelligence and security wing. They were thwarted in what lawyers, including eminent ones from different countries (their identities are available to bona fide investigators by writing me), have described by such terms as “a kangaroo court”. One used to democratic court proceedures can hardly believe, as one reads the lawyer’s notes in transcript, that judges could be so blatant. See, Record of Proceedings document of Hari Sampath’s 2001 case against Sai Baba in the Supreme Court of India, and further comments on this case scuppered by Judges G.B. Patnaik and R.C. Lahoti with the concurrence of then Chief Justice Dr A.S. Anand.

Sathya Sai Baba Disposed Judges Sathya Sai Baba Disposed Judges

Another example of the appallingness that can pass for Indian justice (often an oxymoron) is illustrated by the conduct of a Sai Baba devotee Judge,  Y. V. Anjaneyulu, in Sai Baba’s state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a judgement that contradicts India’s secular justice system and confounds our lawyer members in far more democratic countries than India who have seen the document. For this perversion of justice, see HERE.

Although one must pay tribute to those in the Indian police and legal systems who strive against great odds to do an honest job, one fact has to be faced squarely: there is terrible and extensive corruption in the Indian justice system. With great superficiality and intellectual dishonesty, Pro Sai forces, such as Gerald Joe Moreno, like to attack those of us who point out this internationally-known fact, and they speak, of “India bashing”. It is nothing of the sort. Indian commentators have long and widely lamented the profound corruption of Indian institutions. In a delightful and well-written piece, at the LEGAL RESOURCE CENTRE INDIA, “India’s top 10 lawyers”, Dhananjay Mahaputra (in Times of India Crest Edition Saturday 9 January 2010) writes of K. Paransaran, whom he describes as “the grand old man of India’s court royalty” as one who:  “believes the Bar is no longer as ethical as it once was. He is sad that the image of the higher judiciary has been tarnished with so many allegations of corruption”. Paransaran reflects: “What can I do, but offer my prayers?'”.

A legal course of action initiated in the United states failed to get off the ground because of a legal loophole, in which the Sai Baba group portrayed their entity as being a bookshop. There was no trial, contrary to what has been said by pro Sai interests who are very careless with the facts, and gravely misrepresented by Dr G. Venkataraman, Sai Baba’s deputy world head.

Anyone who wishes to undertake litigation has both to ask themselves what are their financial resources and what are their emotional resources. They also need to establish whether they can hire a lawfirm not noted to employ advocates who can be outsmarted both before and during a trial.

Here are some resources:    ‘Alaya Rahm’s Lawsuit vs Sathya Sai Society of America – Joint Statement by the International JuST Group and the Rahm family’: http://www.rfjvds.dds.nl/ex-baba/engels/articles/alayarahm.htm .   ‘Alaya Rahm’s Testimony – Some Key Statements:  http://www.saibaba-x.org.uk/6/alaya.htm   ‘On Alaya Rahm’s Testimony Against Sathya Sai Baba’:  http://www.saibabaexpose.com/PremRahm.htm . Dr G. Venkataraman is extensively refuted in a four-part article by Robert Priddy and Barry Pittard:  ‘The Sathya Sai Organisation’s Deception and Propaganda Exposed’ – Part One Two Three Four

Senior Indian Policeman (Rtd) Speaks Out About Sathya Sai Baba Murders Cover Up

Posted by Barry Pittard on August 7, 2009

As the years have passed, the Government of India and the Government of Andhra Pradesh have not been able to silence all police personnel. One who has refused to shut up is a senior, retired policeman V. J. Ram, whose work as a detective won him a Presidential Medal. He has spoken out against the massive cover up of the police killings in Sathya Sai Baba’s private quarters, when Sathya Sai Baba and his brother (the late) Janaki Ramaiah (who was on the Sathya Sai Central Trust) had charge of events soon after the slayings occurred. Those who wish to know more about V.J. Ram’s work are welcome to contact me (my details are obtainable by clicking here – Barry Pittard.  Details are at the foot of the article. One would like to see the V.J. Ram book get a decent publisher, and, as has been the wish expressed by former Andhra Pradesh Home Secretary V.P.B. Nair to the BBC, to see the case revisited. See transcript of Nair’s statement to the BBC HERE. See my articles:

The BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ – A Revision

BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ and British Press Praise

It is to their historic shame that major newspaper proprietors co-operated in the news blanket that went into force. Many Indian journalists and editors, politicians from various parties, government officials and others know of the profound extent of the cover up by the then powerful Home Minister S.B. Chavan, a devotee of Sathya Sai Baba, who sped to Puttaparthi from New Delhi to set in motion the suppression of the facts. See

V.J. Ram writes: An account of the massive bribery involved reported by a former top CID sleuth, V. J. Ram, who received a Presidential Medal for his detective services to the Indian State.

Note:  Long before worldwide allegations of Sathya Sai Baba’s serial sexual abuse of boys and young men began to surface in earnest – circa AD 2000 – notable individuals shocked by signs of cover up – started to analyze situations, and leave the Sathya Sai Baba camp. For an example of early investigators, see the article by Warren C. Pyke LLN (Hons.) LLM (VUW), Barrister, New Zealand 3-3-1993: Sathya Sai Baba Murders Evidence (A New Zealand Barrister Analyses Police Evidence). Another earlier investigator of various serious allegations against Sathya Sai Baba was Terry Gallagher, an agricultural scientist and businessman who, in consequence of his findings, resigned as head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Australia. See:  Terry Gallagher’s Testimony

Robert Priddy on the Police Killings in Sai Baba’s Private Quarters

Former leader of the Norwegian Sathya Sai Organization and retired academic at the University of Oslo Robert Priddy has written extensively about the police killings in Sathya Sai Baba’s private chamber in April 1963. A very useful and succinct introduction to the events is: Sathya Sai Baba Bedroom Murders

Indian Minister Shields Sai Baba on BBC television

Posted by Barry Pittard on July 31, 2007

ab-vajpayee-and-mm-joshi.jpgIn the BBC’s 2004 television documentary The Secret Swami, confronted by the BBC interviewer Tanya Datta, Murali Manohar Joshi (see photo, right), one of the most powerful ministers in the since-defeated A.B. Vajpayee (pictured to left) right-wing government, soon lost his temper, jabbing away with pointed finger at Ms Datta, manjoshiaccusing the BBC and people in England of plotting against Sai Baba, A.B. Vajpayee and P.N. Bhagawati (a key Sathya Sai Central Trust member and former Chief Justice of India). He arrogantly shouts at her,

“No, no, no… You don’t know the meaning of interviewing a minister in my capacity, as a minister of my stature.”

Allegations against Sai are worldwide

Ms Datta’s vulnerability in the face of an arch bully was  touching to see, and she showed some courage but tougher interviewers would not have put up with an evasiveness like Joshi’s. It might have been better had Ms Datta not tried to defend the BBC and herself (although her reaction is transparently natural) but, rather, firmly stated the worldwide nature of the serious evidence that keeps on coming.

At least, Murali Manohar Joshi’s arrogant evasion of the BBC’s totally fair question about Indian Government accountability was unmasked for the world to see. Joshi exposed himself. See him doing it in video footage from the BBC’s The Secret Swami HERE

Successive Indian Governments Have Covered Up Sai Baba Scandals

It may be noted that the present Indian government of Manmohan Singh, who himself sings Sai Baba’s praises and visits him, maintains the chilling silence of successive Indian governments in regard to worldwide allegations against Sathya Sai Baba of large-scale, serial sexual abuse of boys and young men, complicity in police killings in his bedroom on June 6, 1993, and massive unaccountability of billions that flow to the Sathya Sai Central Trust from scores of countries around the world.
