‘God’ (Sathya Sai Baba) Blunders On! – On History

Posted by Barry Pittard on January 2, 2011

Sathya Sai Baba’s blunders on history and science are big. For some truly egregious science examples, see the articles cited at the foot of this page.

Readers perturbed to see their friends, family or colleagues getting into the Sathya Sai Baba cult may consider – if the victims are not too far blinded – sharing such materials as highlighted in red, below.  In recent days Robert Priddy has dug up a Sai Tower’s pamphlet that has the full text of Sai Baba’s 1996 Christmas Discourse. In this, Sai Baba’s (supposedly all-knowing) dating of Jesus Christ’s life and extreme mix-up of historical facts about Catholics and Protestants and Islam and Martin Luther are extremely awry.

A great many educated people have learnt enough history to see what absurd nonsense such Sai Baba claims reveal. Yet here is a man – of imperial wealth and vast sway over the minds of many, including those supposedly educated – who proclaims to the millions that he is all-knowing, all-seeing and all-powerful. And that he is the ‘Avatar’  (embodiment of God on earth) who will effectively transform the entire world in his own lifetime.

Here is someone – and no god of any sort – at whose feet successive Indian Prime Ministers, Presidents and countless other Indian eminences, across a wide religious and political spectrum, have repeatedly fallen, including the current Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and President Pratibha Devisingh Patil. In passing, I note that the latter’s  mentor was the exceptionally powerful late  S.B. Chavan, the former Home Minister who presided over the profound cover up of attempted police and media investigations of the April 6, 1993 police killings in Sathya Sai Baba’s bedroom.

India's President Pratibha Devsingh Patil bows to Sai Baba

The then Editor of Sanathana Sarathi, the official Sai newsletter that goes worldwide, V.K. Narasimhan who, as I know from working alongside him, edited out embarrassing statements of Sai Baba, excluded the following blunders.  There has also been editorial omission of the embarrassments in Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume XXIX. Unfortunately for the weeders (see my article The Quiet Weeding Out Of Sathya Sai Baba’s Embarrassing Statements), the efforts at excision failed to prevent the unwitting inclusion of the damaging material in the American film maker James Redmond’s footage of the entire discourse.

Still further, Robert Priddy has just unearthed – and now scanned and made available – a pamphlet containing Sai Baba’s 1996 Christmas Day discourse, published by Sai Towers, Puttaparthi. He has provided detailed information and commentary. Useful references to re-surfacing of this discourse are also contained in Brian Steel’s SB’s Discourses. More Nonsense’ (24 February 2002), and: The Sathya Sai Baba Discourse on Christmas Day, 1996.

Dr Manmohan Singh attends Sai Baba’s birthday event, 1996

Here is just one of his many aburdities, which should rock, but does not, his auditors who know the slightest general history details:  “Three hundred and fifty years B.C., before Christ, Jews lived. However, among Jews, there were religions such as Islam and Christianity. People of that land, they are all Jews. That land is the birthplace of both the religions, Islam and Christianity. The Hebrew language was very prominent. This Hebrew language is more or less equal to our Sanskrit. …”

“Christianity is not just 2,000 years in its origin. It was there even before Christ, 350 years. There the divinity is explained very clearly.”

“The name and the fame of Jesus Christ have spread far and wide. Here, at this moment, there are two schools of thought. The first group of thought – Roman Catholics. There is another group that fought with this group. This group is called Protestants. As they protested, they are Protestants. So among Jews there are these two groups: Catholics and Protestants. The difference of opinion has increased day by day. This led to Jesus, whose life was in danger. Jews there in Jerusalem did not permit Jesus to go there. Like this, religious conflict and fighting was ever on the rise. There were 250 schools of thought, divisions there. They also monopolized certain countries.”

“Because of so many groups there, they all attempted even to harm Jesus. Romans on one side. Catholics on the other side. Luther on another side. There were so many groups that went on changing. All these differences are based on violence, and that led to madness. Because of this attachment to group affiliations, naturally there was conflict and fighting.”

“Religious affiliation leads to ego. This led to confusion among them as to what Jesus said right or wrong.”

Senior Indian Policeman (Rtd) Speaks Out About Sathya Sai Baba Murders Cover Up

Posted by Barry Pittard on August 7, 2009

As the years have passed, the Government of India and the Government of Andhra Pradesh have not been able to silence all police personnel. One who has refused to shut up is a senior, retired policeman V. J. Ram, whose work as a detective won him a Presidential Medal. He has spoken out against the massive cover up of the police killings in Sathya Sai Baba’s private quarters, when Sathya Sai Baba and his brother (the late) Janaki Ramaiah (who was on the Sathya Sai Central Trust) had charge of events soon after the slayings occurred. Those who wish to know more about V.J. Ram’s work are welcome to contact me (my details are obtainable by clicking here – Barry Pittard.  Details are at the foot of the article. One would like to see the V.J. Ram book get a decent publisher, and, as has been the wish expressed by former Andhra Pradesh Home Secretary V.P.B. Nair to the BBC, to see the case revisited. See transcript of Nair’s statement to the BBC HERE. See my articles:

The BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ – A Revision

BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ and British Press Praise

It is to their historic shame that major newspaper proprietors co-operated in the news blanket that went into force. Many Indian journalists and editors, politicians from various parties, government officials and others know of the profound extent of the cover up by the then powerful Home Minister S.B. Chavan, a devotee of Sathya Sai Baba, who sped to Puttaparthi from New Delhi to set in motion the suppression of the facts. See

V.J. Ram writes: An account of the massive bribery involved reported by a former top CID sleuth, V. J. Ram, who received a Presidential Medal for his detective services to the Indian State.

Note:  Long before worldwide allegations of Sathya Sai Baba’s serial sexual abuse of boys and young men began to surface in earnest – circa AD 2000 – notable individuals shocked by signs of cover up – started to analyze situations, and leave the Sathya Sai Baba camp. For an example of early investigators, see the article by Warren C. Pyke LLN (Hons.) LLM (VUW), Barrister, New Zealand 3-3-1993: Sathya Sai Baba Murders Evidence (A New Zealand Barrister Analyses Police Evidence). Another earlier investigator of various serious allegations against Sathya Sai Baba was Terry Gallagher, an agricultural scientist and businessman who, in consequence of his findings, resigned as head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Australia. See:  Terry Gallagher’s Testimony

Robert Priddy on the Police Killings in Sai Baba’s Private Quarters

Former leader of the Norwegian Sathya Sai Organization and retired academic at the University of Oslo Robert Priddy has written extensively about the police killings in Sathya Sai Baba’s private chamber in April 1963. A very useful and succinct introduction to the events is: Sathya Sai Baba Bedroom Murders

Indian Newspaper Reports of Killings In Sai Baba’s Bedroom

Posted by Barry Pittard on June 22, 2009

Reading through the press reports written at the time of the police killings in Sathya Sai Baba’s bedroom under hugely suspicious circumstances on June 6, 1993 is instructive. At first, word had escaped too far and fast for the Puttaparthi officials to slam a suppressive lid. But then followed the monstrous machinery of cover up. For the Anantapur District Journalists’ Union (ADJU) unanswered questions, see:  Press Council of India Long Silent On Sathya Sai Baba Bedroom Killings

Sathya Sai Baba was known to be in charge of situations in the hours before the intruders were slain. Robert Priddy’s accounts of his (and my) friend V.K. Narasimhan’s private depictions to him are very disturbing – they detail some of the processes – such as a remark to Sai Baba’s brother Jankiramaiah (also known as Janakira Ramiah, Janakiram, Janakiramaiah and Janaki), made within VKN’s hearing, of the then Home Minister, S. B. Chavan, a Sathya Sai Baba devotee, who had come poste haste to Puttaparthi, about “dead men tell no tales”.

The powerful central, state, local and ashram cover up that that followed was known to many in India, and beyond. In a properly functioning democratic country, there would have been rigorous, accountable police and jurisprudential processes. Many Indians have pointed out that Sathya Sai Baba will never be prosecuted. He, they say, is far too powerful in his sway over politicians of the major political parties. Travel virtually anywhere in India and you will find, as many travelers report, that this view is very wide-spread. Puttaparthi propaganda ceaselessly tells us that Sathya Sai Baba is being hailed through the world. In our many countries, we know, of course, that this is simply untrue. In India he is not only famous but infamous. Many Indians heartily abhor the way in which Puttaparthi scandals have for so long been covered up. Many deplore the incredible pomp and circumstance that forever surrounds him. All you will need to do is to ask your Indian contacts whether this is so. Many are too polite/embarrassed or not wanting to get involved in an unpleasant discussion. Some feel a deep sense of shame at the international ignominy which he has brought upon India. See:  Sathya Sai Baba: ‘Considerable Concern’ In Wider Hindu Community and Sai Baba, Kubla Khan, Citizen Kane, Bill Gates et alia

A major Hindu leader (to whom on request I shall gladly direct responsible and reputable media or scholars, authors, etc) once wrote to me:

“There is considerable concern among the Hindu Community, especially among the educated. It is very hard to get any action from the temples as they do not wish to cause difficulties with the Sathya Sai Baba groups. People are starting to distance themselves from Sathya Sai Baba. It’s going to be gradual process of education. The biggest impact it appears was the ‘The Secret Swami’ … it seems it has had a tremendous negative effect on Sathya Sai Baba”.

As the reader can see from the following quotation, there is no subtlety about the antidemocratic, authoritarian nature, even in certain public statements, about Sathya Sai Baba and his then chief functionary, Indulal Shah:

“When press persons met Mr. Indulal Shah, chief functionary of the Sri Satya Sai World Trust, after the murders of six young Sai followers in Sathya Sai Baba’s bedroom in 1993, Indulal Shah is reported as having said: ‘the matter is purely internal and we do not wish to have any law enforcement agency investigating into it.” (from The Hindu, 10-6-1993).

N.B. Examine, pray, Shah’s photo. Does he appear brimful of spiritual joy? But why should he be? Sai Baba devotees who know the facts know that he has long been a ‘supreme’ hatchet man, widely feared.

India’s Chronic Addiction To anachronistic Gurus. Any Sea-change?

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 7, 2009

India has lonf suffered the grip on her life of powerful, corrupt gurus. Since the 196o’s many thousands of foreigners – especially westerners – have gone there in search of their soul. Frequently, they have gone to the ashram of gurus, little realising that the factors in human nature that degrade the ideals of philosophies in their own culture are the same ones, though often in very different dress, are the same factors of degradation that exist in the institutions of their own cultural milieu. Each society has their own depiction of them. Since early Christian times, there have been the list of ‘The Seven Deadly Sins’, which the Catholic Church codified thus:

  1. luxuria (lechery/lust)
  2. gula (gluttony)
  3. avaritia (avarice/greed)
  4. acedia (acedia/discouragement)
  5. ira (wrath)
  6. invidia (envy)
  7. superbia (pride)

Devotees of gurus in the long Hindu traditions are familiar with the list of six primary ills that that Sathya Sai Baba would frequently reel off in his discourses and in interviews. These are the The Six Passions (or Enemies) of Mind, called the Ari-shadvarga:

kama : lust; krodha : anger; lobha : greed; moha ; delusion; madamaathsarya : envy;

There is nothing amiss with such codifications, so long as they are not used for striking puritanical fear into human beings. And here lies the problem, many gurus in India, just as in many ‘priestcrafts’ elsewhere use such classifications to enslave. Given that profound superstition in virtually all quarters of Indian life, one wonders whether new generations in India’s ruling elites can rid themselves of the oppressions that are so deeply embedded.

Can India find a solution to the embarrassment that attends the spectacle of a great many foreigners – especially Westerners – drawn to her shores in search of replacement for their own abandoned belief systems, and, often, being profoundly misled?

The extreme grip of the gerontocratic, nepotistic and corrupt political old guard in India (and other power sectors) is now, in a post modern world, rapidly being culled by mortality striking down those who deadly grip on power has lasted for so long.

It does not matter which party or coalition of parties rules. There has long been the obsequious running to highly flawed gurus and astrologers. They are wrong in their predictions, and the leaders so often reliant of a huge network of astrologers.  The same mental befuddlement can be seen in those devotees of Sathya Sai Baba, who blind themselves to his many mistaken predictions and unfulfilled promises. At his ashram, too, we see a long processions of Indian Prime Ministers, Deputy Prime Ministers, Presidents and Vice Presidents and other social elites flocking to his ashram in Puttaparthi. Manmohan Singh, the current Prime Minister, is no exception.  Atal Behari Vajpayee, the previous Prime Minister was a long-declared devotee.

One wonders where is the pride at being Indian, when there is such reliance on the inpouring of billions of dollars, over time, that Sathya Sai Baba, along, what to speak of other gurus, suction in from foreign sources.

Only feebleness and death release the claw-like deadly hands of State. Their talented heirs (often the children and relatives of the old guard) and aspirants of a younger generation increasingly make their run to assert a modernity.  See:

The Guru Trap. Will India Be Forever Trapped?

But at their backs they always hear the old-timers’ blinking chariots hurrying near (if I may twist to haplessness the English poet Andrew Marvell).

Will a somewhat younger India come to evince an efficient modernity, and be much less corrupt ?  We shall learn soon enough.

‘God’s’ Ex-Shah, Indulal Shah

Posted by Barry Pittard on July 30, 2008

Indulal Shah, of Mumbai, India, was the world head of the Sathya Sai Organization, and, previously, for decades, the head of the Indian wing of that organization.

In June 1993, at the time of the Puttaparthi police killings in Sathya Sai Baba’s bedroom, Indulal Shah rose to his height in adroit and politically powerful suppressive actions that would rate a place in a primer for feudal but effective crisis management.

The Hindu, June 10, 1993, reported:

“When press persons met Mr. Indulal Shah, chief functionary of the Sri Sathya Sai World Trust, he said, ‘the matter is purely internal and we do not wish to have any law enforcement agency investigating into it.’”

The then Indian Prime Minister Narasimha Rao and his Home Minister S.B. Chavan and other powerful forces in Indian politics supported and greatly extended upon Puttaparthi’s extensive cover up. Chavan was in Puttaparthi assisting in the damage control. So powerful is Sathya Sai Baba in India right across the political spectrum that Indian governments, irrespective of hue, have ever since maintained an iron-clad damper on the issue, and prevented police, media and judicial investigation. The voices of journalists, such as members of the Anantapur Journalist’s Union in Sathya Sai Baba’s State of Andhra Pradesh, were suppressed.

Andhra Pradesh former Home Secretary, V.P.B. Nair, has described the killings in the BBC’s television documentary The Secret Swami as “absolute cold blooded murder”. View and hear Nair speaking to interviewer Tanya Datta, in this film clip HERE. These intruders could easily have been captured without murdering them. Sai Baba was nearby as events unfolded, hour by hour, and yet – a virtual ‘omnipotent’ dictator within his independent ashram township, at least – did not lift a finger to stop the deaths.
