Oprah Winfrey Show On Male Sexual Abuse: Sathya Sai Baba Cult Survivors Should Watch

Posted by Barry Pittard on July 21, 2011

At this juncture of preparations to litigate against those in the Sathya Sai Organization or allied with it who have sexually abused, or permitted to be abused, I copy below some details and links relating to a November 2010 Oprah Winfrey Special on sexual abuse of males.

It is important for those survivors of Sathya Sai Baba’s and his accomplices’ serial and profound wrongdoings to raise their awareness of a number of psychological and social issues, including various forms of remediation that are available.

I had earlier spoken to an Oprah Winfrey producer about the Sathya Sai cult cases, but nothing came of it.

Activists – strong in the truth and justice of their cause – who take on powerful antagonists invariably come to know two things especially. They learn how powerful vested interests are, and to what extraordinary lengths they will go to defame, libel, threaten and bully, and to distort and lie. They also know that only dogged persistence, unblinking, unyielding, will finally win the day. In the article: Fighting Multi Billion Corruption Takes Longer. Posted by Barry Pittard on March 10, 2007, I remarked:

“Former Sai Baba devotees worldwide are ready, as indeed many times before over several years, to submit our credentials and findings to bona fide independent third-party adjudicators.

In an attempt to obtain proper investigation of the allegations against Sathya Sai Baba and his powerful and influential worldwide organization, we have closely cooperated with major world media and other reputed agencies and institutions. He and the entity he calls the “Divine” instrument for bringing about the greatest spiritual revolution the world has ever seen, the Sathya Sai Organization, have not”.

As only to be expected, since there are constraints on the young  that would prevent their crying hearts from speaking out, these are men who have come forward to share their experiences. This they did in front of one of the biggest audiences television history.

However, let us bear in mind that large numbers of those whom Sathya Sai Baba sexually abused, or in other cases, whom those around him abused (including, as teachers around the world will be unhappy to learn, certain teaching Staff) are now men.

There Comes A Time When Men Have To Stop Acting Like Frightened Children

I would like to think that those boys I taught (1978-790 at Sathya Sai Baba’s Whitefield College (via Bangalore, South India), and many other boys who have passed through Sathya Sai education institutions, will start to mean what they have so often uttered about Vedic and other sacred injunctions to be fearless.

These men, now gathered and pledged to powerful litigation against corrupt Sai Baba forces, will  longer will be silent. As I have mentioned in my last few posts, considerable wealth has been generated that is now at the disposal of that part of our cause which is to make accountable as many of the abusers that we can.

As I have elsewhere pointed out, a measure of legal success has already been achieved in a Bangalore law court BUT it was a success was achievable only at the cost of conditions of mutual non-disclosure.

But the shameless men who were thus exposed should now entertain the notion that large legal remedies are not closed off.

For it is non-disclosure that permits that very silence and secrecy in which the sexual abuse of the young so collossally thrives and infects. A key figure in the exposure of the rampant sexual and other abuses within ISKON (the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, Pratyatoṣa Dāsa, dealt with the renowned Turley law firm states:

“Mr. Turley also said that sexual abuse of children, if not routed out and cured in it’s infancy, spreads like an infectious disease, and this, unfortunately, is exactly what happened within ISKCON.”

———————————————————————

Important Breakthrough!

Litigation against the Sathya Sai Baba forces of serial sexual and other criminal abuses is now powerfully on the move. World class law firms are being consulted. Millions of dollars are on call for this fight on behalf of one of history’s profoundly righteous causes.

SPECIAL NOTE:  Those who wish to litigate or in other ways support legal actions against those who supported the years of homosexual abuse of boys and young men, and other abuses, can, with assurance of strict confidentiality contact my close and trusted colleague Robert Priddy:  rero@getmail.no or myself, Barry Pittard at: bpittard@westnet.com.au or Jay Narain (former Sathya Sai student) client of Hunt and Hunt law firm (see below) at:  jnarain05@hotmail.com

Is Isaac Tigrett Sai Baba’s ‘Walking Will’? Guru Purnima Revelation Or A Fall?

Posted by Barry Pittard on July 14, 2011

At any time, has the Sathya Sai Central Trust cast public aspersions against the huge donor to Sai Baba’s work , Isaac Tigrett? He is the famed  founder of the international chain of Hard Rock Cafes and the House of Blues?

No, they have not. Do they do so now? Again, no.

Tigrett has long been a trusted and close associate of Sathya Sai Baba. Indeed, we may eventually discover what mounting evidence already suggests:  Sai Baba did not trust the Sathya Sai Trust. Most of all, he trusted his young paramour Satyajit, who has now been sidelined by seasoned power players, such as R.J. Ratnakar and V. Srinivasan. And, in one of the strangest developments in the already strange Sai saga,we find an extraordinary example of Sai Baba’s trust for Isaac Tigrett.

In a video posted to the internet a month ago (see details below), Tigrett has undertaken to make a momentous statement on Friday 15 July 2011, a major Hindu festival. Tomorrow ……  There was one rider, though. He said (See his Times Now interview):

“I will at his approval – ah – give this information to the Sai Organization, if they wish to approach me”.

The Trust’s response to media (via a lawyer member, Naganand), could not be more clear. They do not intend to approach Tigrett. He said:

“If Bhagwan has given his instructions in sacred talks it is his business to come and tell us. If he doesn’t he can’t expect us to go and ask. I don’t think those discussion or instruction they had from Bhagwan have any value today as they were all personal instructions.”

But questions arise – What, in these days of immense disruption and confusion within the Sai movement, in exactly what might this entity consist? And what might be its supreme command center? Is it the Sathya Sai Central Trust? Or the international Sathya Sai Organization? Will Tigrett, long known to have something of a mind of his own, be quite happy to bypass the likes of Rathnakar and Srinivasan and deal with the wider organized fold of Sai devotees? Not least those great many donors who are deeply suspicious about the trustworthiness of the Sai Central trust – or some members of it. And concerned about how, exactly, their donations were disposed. We are talking billions, and not in rupees, either!

In various Sai devotee magazines, Isaak Tigrett – who has long maintained a relative degree of frankness that markedly contrasts with Sai Baba officials around the world – has spoken of how, the Indian Sai Trust officials constantly thwarted him. This was even though Sai Baba had put him in charge of arrangements to equip the Superspeciality Hospital at Puttaparthi, the multi-million dollar project  which Tigrett in fact funded for (according to figures we have heard) some 49 million US dollars, and not sums such as the 108 million so often spoken of in Sai Baba circles round the world.  My reader might find it instructive to hear a telephone recording of David Bailey, formerly Sai Baba’s closest western devotee who knew Tigrett and many other key Sai Organization players from India and abroad. See below.  See also:  Truth In Action: David and Faye Bailey Vs Sathya Sai Baba and: David Bailey and Thomas Wiehe. Transcript Of Phone Link: Sathya Sai Abuses

Sai Baba had trust issues in that Sai could not trust the Sai Trust

Given the vast millions in currency, gold, silver and many other valuables Sathya Sai Baba stashed away in quarters away from which, according to all reports, he kept even his closest confidants  (except Satyajit), one may not unduly wonder that he was secretive in the extreme.

The Sai Trust contests Tigrett’s statement. It is one that has drawn sections of the Indian media to refer to Tigrett as perhaps being Sai Baba’s “walking Will”. Tigrett has portrayed himself as keeper of a great secret Sai Baba entrusted to him in the witness of another. The name of this individual’s  name is not yet revealed, but Tigrett says that it is a distinguished devotee of Sai Baba.

But what legal status could any such custodianship have? The matter is fraught with oddity. However, if those forces among Sai devotees at large have confidence in the word of Tigrett and the witness to whom he refers, the succession game may change radically. And in doing so sweep Ratnakar and Srinivasan abruptly aside. There are many reports of grave concern in the wider Sai organization, and, in the 50 minutes version of his talk (at Sai Baba’s Dharmakshetra in Mumbai), it is not surprising to hear Tigrett make an impassioned plea to all devotees to stop rumor-mongering, and to come together as a “loving Sai family”. But his use of graphs detailing newspaper reports can be seriously criticised. Any reader not blinded by faith can see that a great deal of the reportage in the more responsible sectors of the Indian press have reported and raised questions that any professional newspaper has a duty to do. All his talk of focusing on praying for all the members of the Sai Trust, and sending out love, simply aids and abets the profound lack of accountability and transparency which have brought the Sai Baba world to its present unhappy pass.

Nagananda, Trustee, Sathya Sai Central Trust Board (See newspaper report below) says:

“Bhagwan had a one to one interaction with lot of people and it was an interaction between guru and devotee. So really it is one’s own personal experience. Swami’s administration was different from personal relationships built between devotee and guru. Those personal relationships had nothing to do with the administration of the ashram.”

But it needs no lawyer like Naganand to see that the Sai Trust’s stance on this issue, at least, is normative. That is to say, in countless legal systems around the world, a person’s Will and Testament are to be recorded in writing. There is a number of precautionary requirements, and provisions for certain contingencies – see,  Making a will (The Law Society, UK).

Vital questions will be:

  • Who was the witness to whom Tigrett refers?
  • Was any substantive matter recorded in writing and signed by Sathya Sai Baba?
  • Did any such document contain any witnessing signature?

Has Tigrett Lost His Marbles, Too?

Heaven knows what a “walking will” is, if anything. If Tigrett has lost his famed acumen acquired in building hugely successful international businesses, he gravely risks, after his promised statement (due this Friday, if he makes it), being made an international laughing-stock.

Of course, we shall need to wait until Friday. My readers may just be able to hold their breath until that time.

Wealthy Donor Isaac Tigrett. Says he is Sai Baba's "Walking Will"

In his writings, my colleague Robert Priddy has focused on a number of details that would appear to write Tigrett off as a considerable eccentric. The evidence does not look good for Tigrett, admittedly. Priddy writes:

“Isaac Tigrett has stated that Sathya Sai Baba – who Tigrett worships as God Incarnate etc. etc. – gave him a crystal skull at an interview where the object just appeared in Sai Baba’s hands (as posted recently on my blog). Tigrett believes in the supernatural power of this skull and that cosmic balance depends on it (somehow) and that it carries a cosmic curse which can destroy the earth – as can be seen from the pages copied from the Internet below”.

I shared a nearby desk with Tigrett in my editing days at Puttaparthi, and got the sense of a man with his marbles intact. Perhaps mine weren’t, and I may remain the more mistaken, but I sensed a man of clarity and straightness. Indeed, he was upfront with the BBC – which none of Sai Baba’s officials were. Tigrett was frank with the BBC interviewer in ‘The Secret Swami’, Tanya Datta:

ISAAC TIGRETT
Interviewed by the BBC in the one-hour documentary ‘THE SECRET SWAMI’

Tanya Datta: But even if it was proven to you that Sai Baba was a paedophile and a serial sex abuser, you¹re saying it wouldn’t change the fact that he is your guru. (Tigrett laughs at this rather wildly, see picture on left)
Isaac Tigrett:
Absolutely not. Absolutely not. He could go out and murder someone tomorrow, as I said, it’s not going to change my evolution, it’s not going to change the good things that have come out of my relationship down there.
Tanya Datta: Does that mean that some part of you believes there could be some truth to the rumours?
Isaac Tigrett:Oh, absolutely I believe there is truth to the rumours.
Tanya Datta: You believe there is truth to the rumours?
Isaac Tigrett: Sure, there probably is, probably is.

Mind you, billionaires can afford a wee bit of integrity, and, in any case, have minions to get dirty hands so that the big boss can look good.

My nutshell view is this:

That as Sathya Sai Baba increasingly faced enormous problems – particularly after circa 2000 and our movement of exposure and devotee exit from the international Sathya Sai Organization – he behaved like the man he was instead of the God that he thought he was. For example, in his 2000 Christmas Day discourse, he lost his cool publicly.

The huge upsurge of bad publicity – chiefly via the exponential growth of the internet – threw Sai Baba and his minders into many tailspins. Secrets which, by means of political and other types of influence, the inner circle of the Sai Trust had  suppressed hitherto now surfaced. And with great force – right round the world.

From the minders’ point of view, the ‘cats’ being let out of ‘bags’ must have seemed to scream, and to be tiger toothed and clawed. Never before had their damage control instincts and skills been so challenged.

In 1997, after reports of scandals were already starting to surface more widely, my having not been to Puttaparthi for 15 years, one of the first things that struck me were Sai Baba’s highly controlled, rigidly choreographed movements to and fro. I mentioned this observation to Chris Parnell, a foremost leader in the Australian Sathya Sai Organization. A little later, he said to me, with an air of some mystery: “You are going to have a lot of work to do when you get back to Australia”. I took this to mean that harm stemming from allegations about Sai Baba sexually molesting many boys and young men was going to have to be addressed.

This along with Sai Baba’s seriously declining health, both mentally and physically, allowed the power players around him increasingly to stage-manage him publicly and browbeat him privately. He could have his boys and young men, but be far more careful. And for godssake  contain the foreigner situation, because if you don’t the vast donation base will be heavily jeopardized.

Of Sathya Sai Baba’s increasing lack of poise, In 2003, I wrote:

“Clearly losing his nerve in response to our intense government, police, media and internet pressure, Sathya Sai Baba’s discourse on Christmas Day 2000 far from celebrated Christmas themes, such as wishing ‘peace and goodwill to all men’. The Times of India, 26 December, 2000 headlined: ‘Sai Baba Lashes Out At His Detractors’. He extensively boasted his social works (actually they are overwhelmingly those of his devotees). Jealousy and reception of money motivated us, he said. Very terrible is the karmic future he evoked for us: ‘Betrayal of God is the worst of all betrayals. It will not be atoned no matter how many births are experienced'”.

On Tigrett’s donation to the Superspeciality Hospital at Puttaparthi, Priddy notes:

“Word has long had it in the Sai movement that Tigrett donated over $100 million, at least. However, David Bailey, who was a very close follower of Sai Baba (until he finally blew the whistle), and who knew all the Sai ‘veranda VIPs’ well, knew that Tigrett gave $49 million dollars, of which $15 million simply disappeared. unaccountably. (Hear the phone call where he details this). Tigrett wrote an article – published in some Sai magazines – where he told how he was put in charge of the hospital equipping project by Sai Baba, but was frozen out by the ashram and Central Trust and had great problems doing many things due to the huge egos he encountered”.

I will reveal Sathya Sai Baba’s secret soon: Hard Rock Cafe founder
Published: Thursday, Jun 23, 2011, 16:13 IST
Place: Puttaparthi | Agency: ANI
Sathya Sai Baba and Isaac Tigrett

An American devotee of the late Sathya Sai Baba has said that he will reveal a closely kept secret of the Godman in six weeks.

Sixty-four-year-old Isaac Tigrett, a businessman of Jackson, Tennessee, made a startling revelation that ‘he is a living will of Bhagwan‘.

Speaking to the Times Now television channel, Tigrett, who is also the founder of Hard Rock and House of Blues and lives in Sai Baba’s ashram Prasanthi Nilayam, said that Sai Baba gave him instructions on how he wanted the ashram to be run after his death.

Trustees of Sathya Sai Baba, however, have rubbished Tigrett’s claim, saying that the spiritual guru had no secrets.

Considering that Sathya Sai Baba left behind a considerable fortune, there is almost a scramble among his successors to know what the secret is all about.

Nagananda, Trustee, Sathya Sai Central Trust Board said, “Bhagwan had a one to one interaction with lot of people and it was an interaction between guru and devotee. So really it is one’s own personal experience. Swami’s administration was different from personal relationships built between devotee and guru. Those personal relationships had nothing to do with the administration of the ashram.”

“Whenever some instructions were given & Bhagwan wanted action to be taken on that instruction, he would inform the administration like the secretary. If somebody got some instructions from Bhagwan it is their bonded duty to pass it on. They cant expect us to go an ask that have you got instructions, what that is and why don’t you tell us?,” added the trustee.

He added, “If Bhagwan has given his instructions in sacred talks it is his business to come and tell us. If he doesn’t he can’t expect us to go and ask. I don’t think those discussion or instruction they had from Bhagwan have any value today as they were all personal instructions.”

Health Professional Comes Out On BBC: Sai Baba sexually abused him when young

Posted by Barry Pittard on April 26, 2011

I dearly wish that, with the great many thousands of visitors to this blogsite and that of Robert Priddy, there will be those who can come out with their experiences of sexual and many other forms of abuse at the hands of Sathya Sai Baba.

There is something dangerous – often unconsciously so – about the burying of terrible secrets. Secrets – secretly – undermine and erode, and play out in symptoms that look very different to their fearful and disruptive causes. Relationships, jobs, and personal happiness and effectiveness are typically damaged.

However, it is with a marked caveat that I speak of coming out. I think, for example, of the acute situation in India, where I lived for several years, and therefore have some sense of how the extended family works, and the effects that speaking out can have in multiple destructive ways, including marriage, economic stability of whole family groupings and so forth. What is more, India is not a society where people can speak out on the most personal issues, such as on Oprah Winfrey, Dr Phil, and many other such television shows.

My caveat is this. That it is of prime importance for anyone who intends to come out with their painful, and sometimes tragic, accounts of coming to grief with Sathya Sai Baba and his cult to get the most ethical, sensitive legal, psychological and emotional support working for oneself.

For those who wish to undertake any such venture in regard to Sathya Sai Baba, our very experienced, credentialed mental health professionals can endeavor, through their own apex, professionally chartered bodies and their further resources, to see that those in need are in good hands. Our former devotee workers work with the same principles of compassionate service that they did in the many decades in the Sathya Sai Organization. (A fact profoundly dishonored by its leaders and many in the rank-and-file who have attempted to obliterate facts from their memories)

Mental health professionals who have excellent qualifications are welcome to contact Robert Priddy and myself, and we shall be glad to provide contact for you with those professionals already knowledgeable of Sathya Sai Baba-related issues in counseling settings.

I should add that we know that, in surfacing issues of various types of abuse, there can be keen issues between directions counseling and law make take. Sometimes, they may be able to work well together; but there are views that they do not and never can. As elsewhere in life, bewildering crossroads can be reached, such as whether an individual had best take the route of debriefing with a lawyer or e.g., or a psychologist, psychotherapist, etc., or combine the services. Perhaps something has to be left up to the researches and determinations of those who feel harmed. (I think ‘survivors’ is often a more useful and proactive word than ‘victims’, though no word does all that much justice).

One of the lessons those centrally engaged in the exposure of Sathya Sai Baba and his cult, such as Robert Priddy and I, Barry Pittard, have had to learn, until it becomes part of the fibre of our being, is of the extreme fragility (often far from obvious) of those whose privacy has been sorely abused. And who have been still further abused by what we view as the international Sathya Sai Organization’s extraordinary dereliction of duty of care.

It is too easy to think that because a person may appear psychologically robust that they are therefore robust. But what happens to that robustness when, as horribly often in court, a person who claims to have been abused. Many legal and mental health records exist where victims, say, of rape make statements of the sort:  It was like being raped a second time over. Or what happens when, with the knowledge and participation, in the background, of highly placed leaders in the Sathya Sai Organization defamatory attacks are launched on those who have spoken out. And yet who are known, and have long been known, in their wider communities, professions and trades, to be persons of singular decency and service to others?

It strikes me that history will not look kindly on those countless Sai devotees who have so extensively and blindly failed to follow those teachings that their master has taught in common with those ethics enshrined in all the great systems of values.

Here is the BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ video clip where Tanya Datta interviews Mark Roche, long a highly respected member of the Sathya Sai Organization. At the time of his interview he was in his 60’s and is currently a psychotherapist in the USA:

BBC-Named ‘The Secret Swami’, Sathya Sai Baba Hospitalized and Fighting For Life

Posted by Barry Pittard on April 6, 2011

Sathya Sai Baba is now kept alive by, according to his medical specialists, “assisted ventilation through ventilator and CRRT, a slow dialysis process to assists kidneys” .

In having to report the health bulletins emitting from Puttarthi, the Indian media – so remiss in reporting anything inimical to Sathya Sai Baba – are, of course, given that he may die at any moment, going to have to do their best to get the facts right.

Sathya Sai Baba's Puttaparthi Hospital. Main funding US Billionaire Isaac Tigrett

However, with the rare exception like the mass circulation magazine India Today, it has signally failed to look for or tell the facts. There has grown the irony that NRI’s (non-resident-Indians) can read of the revelations about Sai Baba of a sort suppressed in the Indian media. But millions in India cannot. It is the media outside India which has investigated the many and serious allegations against Sathya Sai Baba, such as wide-scale, serial sexual molestation of boys and young men, implication in the cover up of murders in his bedroom in 1993, and other scandals.

Those wishing to investigate the antecedents of Sathya Sai Baba’s physical and mental health problems will need to extend their investigations a number of years back. But one of many examples of the ‘cracks’ appearing is, fortunately for the forces of openness and accountability, caught forever in BBC footage. Two major revelations occurred. The first was that of Sai Baba’s cheating in the supposedly miraculous production of the Siva Lingam. See: Sai Baba No Shiva. Gold From His Gut Is Regurgitator’s Trick. The second was the (strictly speaking) inane statement he made, when indeed many such statements have otherwise been suppressed by Puttaparthi authorities. See my article: The Quiet Weeding Out Of Sathya Sai Baba’s Embarrassing Statements.

After returning to the Puttaparthi stage, having earlier fainted, Sai Baba tells the crowds (as noted in The Secret Swami):

“Out of the stomach emanated Shiva Lingas of the weight of three tonnes. That’s the reason why some strain on the face and the body”

In the huge efforts of networked former Sathya Sai Baba followers from many countries to get through to world media, UNESCO, governments and institutions, we sought out those known for both high professional repute and strong investigative capability. Earlier approaches – circa 2000 – had been made to the BBC to no avail. Then, in November 2003, BBC producers contacted me (first, via Iris Asic). They said they would also contact various Sathya Sai Baba officials and other followers.

We were successful in attracting extensive response of the BBC, CBC, ABC, SBS, DR, Atul TV, India Today, Times of London, Telegraph, Guardian, Salon.com, the Age, Australian Financial Review, Gatopado, West Australian, (Adelaide) Advertiser, Gatopardo, and newspapers in Europe, Canada and and still others.

For an outstanding and profoundly sacrificial advocate on behalf of Sathya Sai Baba’s many victim of sexual and other types of abuse, see: Glen Meloy (“Standing up for truth and goodness”) – In Memoriam

They did indeed. At the beginning of 2004, as soon as BBC producer Eamon Hardy made it clear to the ashram authorities that BBC would like from Puttaparthi an official reaction to the worldwide allegations of sexual abuse being made against Sathya Sai Baba, the team was at once evicted from the ashram by the Secretary of the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust, K. Chakravarthi.

(If I may indulge a retired teacher’s memories, in which former students good bad and indifferent float about one’s psyche like figures in heaven and, occasionally, hell, one of the many joys of my teaching at the Sathya Sai College in Whitefield, via Bangalore, South India, in the seventies was to teach Chakravarthi’s son, who subsequently did well at Oxford University. But there is sadness in my heart that families have been torn because the Sai Baba cult has inflicted such ethical compromize in individuals who might otherwise have conducted themselves well.  See: Sathya Sai Baba 85th Birthday No Celebration For Those He Has So Badly Hurt. Posted by Barry Pittard on November 23, 2010).

But, along with the bolting of Puttaparthi gates, there was also the bolting of the ‘horse’. As the BBC team retreated, the cameras already had damning footage in the can. The BBC team had already been accorded a rare, and perhaps unique, permission to televise what, for millions in India, is the their peak festival, Mahasivrathri. The Indian television company Sanskaar TV also was permitted to televise this event. My take is that, at this time of intense adverse international exposure of the Sai cult, the Sai elders sought to wrest back some advantage, and show the – now heavily assailed and supposed – ‘Glory of Puttaparthi’.

In 2004, as caught by BBC and Indian television cameras, Sai Baba not only produced one lingam, but, if we take his officials’ word for it, two more. According to Sai Baba’s chief translator and also a world-travelling emissary Professor Anil Kumar in his words to the crowds, Sai Baba privately manifested two more ‘atma lingams’ off-stage. The public ‘miracle’ he performed, to the surprise of many, in terribly fumbling and absent-minded fashion. There have been many incidents that have revealed Sai Baba’s declining faculties. These mental and physical shortfalls his officials, rather ineptly, try to mask. At large, Sai devotees keep a numbed silence, or attribute it all to ‘Baba’s Leela’.

Datta, Tanya In the BBC’s The Secret Swami, the interviewer Tanya Datta comments:

“To the alarm of the crowd suddenly Sai Baba collapsed. His huge coterie of staff swung into action. There was panic. An organisation used to tight control seemed to have lost its grip. Sai Baba was hastily wheeled off stage.” Later, he is carried hobbling back, with officials claiming that he manifested two more lingams offstage”. Transcript is HERE. See the whole documentary. Broadband users click HERE (80 MB). There is a small version for modem users Here (23,3 MB)
Or you can download it packed in zip file (22 MB) Here.

Returning to the Kulwant Hall stage within the next hour, to the immensely relieved audience of many thousands, a pale and shaken Sai Baba makes the unfathomable claim:

“Out of the stomach emanated Shiva Lingas of the weight of three tonnes. That’s the reason why some strain on the face and the body”

Once the gates slammed shut on it, the BBC team used a secret camera trained on highly elusive chairman of a world organization, Dr Michael Goldstein of Covena, Southern California, head of a cult that faces grave accountability and duty of care questions in India and many countries around the world.  Sanctions for the unusual use of hidden camera were obtained by the producers from top echelon BBC management and legals.

The Sathya Sai Organization, despite many claims not to recruit or fund raise should certainly be scrutinized by any public it operates among. In these it cultivates governments, political and institutional organs.

Sathya Sai Anger Mismanagement Course

The one-hour television documentary The Secret Swami resulted.  It first screened on June 17, 2004, and was subsequently shown by cable and satellite in some two hundred or more countries. British television critics from major newspapers unanimously praised the documentary. My own reflection on it is in this article: The BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ – A Revision. See also: BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ and British Press Praise.

Sathya Sai Baba’s Pacemaker Implant – His Promised Health and Longevity In Doubt

Posted by Barry Pittard on April 1, 2011

Sai Baba recently claimed he always smiles - but nowadays only this! Increasingly sick and ailing over recent years, Sathya Sai Baba has said: “Purity, patience and perseverance. With these three you are bound to acquire good health and bliss. You may believe it or not. But the truth is that these three are responsible for my health (Arogya) and bliss (Ananda)” (Sanathana Sarathi July 1995, p. 173)

But, sadly for himself and his devotees, he is not all-powerful, as he proclaims himself to be. But all-senile.

This decline into senescence, was of course gradual but not exactly, even when it became glaringly evident, a topic for public discussion among his devotees.  Several years back, when our laymen’s eyes spotted the physical changes, senior cardiologists and other doctors among our number confirmed our own naive-level, but realistic, observations.

Even brief extracts from articles over time at this blogsite give unmistakable evidence of what devotees cannot truthfully rationalize or wish away. Namely that their supposedly all-powerful guru has not miraculously materialized the pacemaker implanted in him last Monday. Nor can they explain how their master sits – shoulders humped, face immobile and eyes staring vacantly. They may think that he is going to do an all-three-world-beating great miracle and cure himself, but they cannot falsify the fact of his many failed prophecies and promises. They cannot reconcile many serious and repeated contradictions in his statements with the reality that has grown so glaringly apparent. Such as comments decades ago, and repeated recently, that he will physically visit various countries. The late Howard Murphet, Australian journalist and author of best-selling books on Sathya Sai Baba, with whom he was close for years, wrote:

“Swami once, a good many years ago told me that He would not travel abroad until His own house was in order, by that He means India, of course”. Source: Online version, “The Lights of Home”

Sathya Sai Baba In Fits of Sobbing: Video Footage Confirms Earlier Accounts

Posted by Barry Pittard on March 5, 2011

Sathya Sai Baba is the would-be ‘God’ that failed. Well may he cry. His is a crying shame …….

Now 85 years old and both mentally and physically unstable, with many of his predictions abysmally failed, along with countless promises (such as of healing people), it is little wonder that Sathya Sai Baba, from our reliable information, has been seen to weep for hours of a day. Last November, his sobbing has even been captured on video and can be seen by clicking HERE.   See my article: Sai Baba Breaks Down and Sobs At 85th Birthday Celebration (Video Footage), Posted by Barry Pittard on December 31, 2010.

Sai Baba’s Deceptive Hair Management

I made a note:  “the Australian scholar Brian Steel’s remark of February 2002 seems almost prescient”:

‘Since the ‘discrepancies’ appear to be increasing nowadays, is there any possibility that Sai Baba is suffering from a degenerative ageing disease which might have an effect on his thinking and speaking?’

Likewise, in October 2002, a Swedish psychologist and former devotee, Åsa Samsioe, noting physical signs of Sai Baba’s ageing like his development of a ’turkey throat’ and also the “low intellectual level” of his discourses, remarked:

‘He must have one heck of a job, Sathya Sai Baba… it can’t be easy to age in his situation, besides being under so much criticism as he has recently been… not surprising that it leaves its marks. Occasionally I think ‘poor man’… feel some pity for him. A whole life built on lies… captured by the myth about himself… to be the object of the projections of millions… and to be forced , at least outwardly, to live up to all the expectations put to him… to always have to have all those people around him’. http://home.no.net/anir/Sai/enigma/Swede4.htm

Sathya Sai Baba and Absurdity – Revealed in His Officials’ Documents

Posted by Barry Pittard on June 2, 2010

Sai editors have done an extensive job of weeding out many such statements, which give, we are well-informed, great concern to his better-informed servitors. See: The Quiet Weeding Out Of Sathya Sai Baba’s Embarrassing Statements.

Here is a sample – from ‘Sai Baba Talks To Russian Ladies’. Excerpts Prashanthi Nilayam 25.06.02, seen at a major Sathya Sai Baba website: saibabaofindia.com/interview_russian.htm  -:

“Now in Russia husband and wife often live separately. They fight with each other. Husband doesn’t want to take care of the family.

Ladies have two stomachs. One is for food, another is for baby. In that other stomach often there are some diseases. One man comes and gives his blood. Another man comes and gives his blood, and so on. This blood mixes inside and causes problems. Ladies also take pills to prevent being pregnant. This is another reason for a disease. This is not good. Control your senses and you will not fall sick”

Sathya Sai Baba’s Tips To Keep Ageing Away

Posted by Barry Pittard on April 29, 2010

On stage before February 2004’s Mahasivaratri crowd, the BBC cameras (in footage that would later become part of ‘The Secret Swami’, which has been seen in over 120 countries around the world) show Sai Baba looking increasingly sick. He produces the lingam, and the materialization trick demonstrated by Professor Narendra Nayak is easy for the viewer to spot, the lingam being concealed in Sai Baba’s handkerchief. In the ensuing documentary, the BBC journalist Tanya Datta comments:

“To the alarm of the crowd suddenly Sai Baba collapsed. His huge coterie of staff swung into action. There was panic. An organisation used to tight control seemed to have lost its grip. Sai Baba was hastily wheeled off stage.”

Later, he is carried hobbling back, with officials claiming that he manifested two more lingams offstage. To the audience, a shaken Sai Baba makes a preposterous claim:

“Out of the stomach emanated Shiva Lingas of the weight of three tonnes. That’s the reason why some strain on the face and the body”: http://home.hetnet.nl/~ex-baba/engels/movies.html

But, as so commonly, Sai Baba, in word and action falsifies what he superabundantly preaches.

“Desire to which you are too fondly attached breeds anger and its nefarious brood. Discard it and you can have perpetual youth! The Aanandha that the Aathman can manifest will keep age and ageing away!” Discourse of Sathya Sai Baba, Prashanthi Nilayam, 22 Feb 1971. Published by Sri Sathya Sai Books and Publications Trust.

“The attributes of the Avatars are beyond human comprehension…. Rama and Krishna were ever youthful. Have you ever seen a picture of Rama or Krishna with grey hair?….. Usually old people have wrinkles on their faces … I do not have any signs of old age. (loud applause). There is not a single wrinkle on My face”. Sanathana Sarathi, October, 2002.

But …!

On his 60th birthday, he promised to look like this, forever young, as it were:

Now he looks like this: Sathya Sai Baba said would not age. But …!

Sathya Sai Baba’s Slurred Speech Due To Old Age. ‘Eenadu’ News Report

Eenadu, a leading Indian mass circulation newspaper,  reported:
“Lacking in Clarity: There was a lack of clarity in Sathya Sai’s speech because of his old age. The interpreter struggled much to translate his speech into English. Satya Sai was seated in a special wheel chair which was brought very close to the car, so he could very slowly get into it. At the time of the speech, he stood up with great difficulty with the help of his assistants.”

Sathya Sai Baba Is Fast-ailing

Posted by Barry Pittard on August 4, 2009

What will the fast-ailing Sathya Sai Baba do? Rub oil or vibhuti on the surface of his multiple infirmities, and do all that he has for so long promised? That is to say:

  • Bring the world to him, even before he dies
  • Harmonize the world’s major religions
  • Save the world from enormous catastrophes
  • Lift a whole mountain range
  • Travel the world
  • Fly through the air
  • Put humanity on what he calls ‘the royal road’ to righteousness
  • And so much more ….

To listen to his carefully hand-picked and carefully groomed speakers, his fame has spread to virtually every clime. This claim is patently untrue. Ask people on crowded streets in many countries do they know the name Nelson Mandela, or the late Princess Diana. Or whether they can immediately visualize those such as the Pope, Barach Obama, the late Michael Jackson, and so on, and they will instantly affirm that they do.

Do leaders in the interfaith movement feature him or his emissaries as notable in their publications and websites? And yet the following edifice, sited amid the great opulence of his Puttaparthi ashram, displays his symbol (the so-called ‘Sarva Dharma Chakra’ or All Faiths motif):

Will V.P.B. Nair Keep His Word To BBC On Sathya Sai Baba?

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 8, 2011

In mid 2004, former Andhra Pradesh Home Secretary, V.P.B. Nair spoke to the BBC in its 2004 television documentary – ‘The Secret Swami’ – about the official corruption that attended the police killings in Sathya Sai Baba’s bedroom in June 1993. He said he intended to take steps to get the case re-opened.

I again ask:  has Nair done what he told the BBC that he would do? And, indeed, hope that Indian citizens ask him:

Have you, as you told the BBC that you would do, made efforts to keep your promise to see that there is a proper investigation into the killings at Puttaparthi?

CLICK HERE for a film clip from the BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’, in which V.P.B. Nair speaks of the killings, which he said were in ‘cold blood’.  And HERE to read the transcript of Nair’s statement:  BBC Interview with V.P.B. Nair

Only the Indian people can rally their sense of national honor and rise up and demand answers from their authorities, who continue to protect Sathya Sai Baba.

Here is the extraordinary fact: Exposure of these killings in Sai Baba’s bedroom at Puttaparthi, and of the subsequent suppression by local, state and central government of the police investigations, has been effectively left up to two individuals gifted with cussed unstoppableness – the late Basava Premanand in India and Robert Priddy in Norway.

The lengths to which Premanand and Priddy have gone to examine the welter of documentation have demanded much sacrifice of time and energy, as have their many other Sai Baba exposure efforts. They have been attacked, reviled, and libeled.

Priddy and I kept in touch with Premanand over the years, and this contact allowed us a degree of confidential insight into the very real risks to life and limb that Premanand ran in a country so volatile as India.

Soon after Basava Premanand’s death, I wrote a tribute – about a man whose decency and valor both Robert Priddy and I had come, over the years, to know from personal dealings with him:

Sathya Sai Baba Breaks Down and Sobs at 85th Birthday

Posted by Barry Pittard on December 11, 2010

Confirming many reports of Sathya Sai Baba breaking down and weeping in more recent times, there is now brilliantly clear and revealing video footage for all to see.

To see this video, CLICK HERE

It is not that crying is out of order, per se. It is, however, the case that Sai Baba has had many words to say about stoicism. Or, to be exact:  samatva, equal mindedness. Countless times his devotees have heard him utter, e.g.,:

“Let anyone say anything; remain calm”.

Here but another two of countless references he has made to his (assumed) equanimity:

“Sai is unaffected by praise and blame”.  Sathya Sai Speaks Vol. 14.

“I am not happy about such praises. I have no desire that people should extol Me. I am neither elated nor depressed by such acts. I am beyond praise or ridicule, respect or disrespect, anger or happiness. I have only one attribute throughout – My love. I love even those who hate Me. I love even those who indulge in bad propaganda against Me. I do not consider anyone as enemy”.  Sathya Sai Baba 83rd Birthday Celebrations Discourse 2008

Sathya Sai Baba’s many reported weeping episodes have taken – as from circa the year 2000 – a marked upsweep after the advent of worldwide exposure of widespread serial sexual abuse of boys and young men (See also HERE and HERE);  his implication in the massive local, state and central governments’ cover up of police killings in his bedroom at Puttaparthi (See HERE and HERE and HERE); vast misappropriation of billions in funds collected worldwide (See HERE and HERE and HERE); his vast opulence in a land of great poverty, squalor, ignorance and superstition; his failed predictions (See HERE and HERE); and much else that reveals him to be one of history’s great imposters, whatever may be the good deeds that he has sparked off in many of his devotees.

He has also said:

“When I am defamed, I never get incensed, for it is only the tree full of edible fruits that is attached by sticks and stones.” Sathya Sai Speaks Vol. 4 p. 184.

But here is his so-called equanimity, when he loudly and repeatedly banged with his fist on his lectern (to loud and prolonged applause by the crowds) in his Christmas discourse of 2000, which had scarcely anything to say about Christ – see quote from Sanathana Sarathi, on right hand side:

Sathya Sai Baba Calls His Critics Demons

Robert Priddy has some instructive historical notes on reports of Sathya Sai Baba crying. He comments:

“That Sathya Sai Baba sits and cries so much illustrates the absurd dishonesty of his years of boastful claims to be unmoved by any pain or pleasure!  His tears are clearly not those of ecstatic joy as entire demeanour reeks of depression and decline. In the birthday evening video (excerpt 8 mins)  one can see how he is more like a wooden idol than a living Divinity. How come that this supposed self-proclaimed infallible and ever youthful Avatar is in such a state? There will as usual surely be no answers from his staff or followers… all they can do is to try to pretend that it is some kind of miracle of showing his humanity (well, it is not showing divinity)!”

See:  Sathya Sai Baba crying (video). Posted by robertpriddy on December 10, 2010

In recent years, there has been a marked increase of reports that depict  Sai Baba acting in many ways not previously typical of him. However, there is now 85th birthday celebrations video footage  of him breaking down and crying. Or, to be exact – as the viewer can, with the greatest clarity see – breaking into uncontrollable sobbing.

As in a great deal of footage, viewers can also see the Sai Baba’s mask-like face and other signs of a deterioration. These afford yet another instance, taken from myriad examples, of how Sai Baba’s predictions have so dramatically and demonstrably failed to materialize.  Many statements that are to be seen scattered through official Sathya Sai publications can today be viewed, with sharp and sometimes gross informativeness, in juxtaposition with the reality that is the physically and mentally ailing Sathya Sai Baba. His devotees are blind to the glaring anomalies. He has said, for example:

“Rama and Krishna were ever youthful. Have you ever seen a picture of Rama or Krishna with grey hair?….. Usually old people have wrinkles on their faces … I do not have any signs of old age. (loud applause). There is not a single wrinkle on My face”. Sanathana Sarathi, October, 2002.

“Many people wonder that I look so young even at the age of 73. The reason is that I have the three P’s in Me. One is Purity, the second is Patience and the third is Perseverance. It is because of these three that I shall remain like this for any number of years to come. (cheers)”  p. 302 Sanathana Sarathi, 11-1998

We have BBC footage to thank for showing both the faking of a so-called miracle and also documentation of the sort of inane statements that, in recent years, have been reported. On stage in front of February 2004’s Mahasivaratri crowd, the BBC cameras (in footage that would later become part of ‘The Secret Swami’, which has been seen in over 120 countries around the world, see resources below) show Sai Baba looking increasingly sick.

That’s the reason why some strain on the face and the body” http://home.hetnet.nl/~ex-baba/engels/movies.html

See further examples of Sai Baba’s increasing decrepitude:

Sathya Sai Baba’s Slurred Speech Due To Old Age. ‘Eenadu’ News Report
“I intend to undertake a world tour, shortly.”

But the reality is very different from the perspective of his devotees, who relegate all contrary evidence to a nether region of what is left of their logical minds. As further witness: …

Sick and Ailing Sathya Sai Baba 85. His Promises to Look Young Have Failed

Posted by Barry Pittard on November 24, 2010

That age has its physical and mental ravages is not the point here.  Who is not privy to these? …. To which Shakespeare’s Hamlet refers in his famous soliloquy – … “The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to.”  The only point here is that Sathya Sai Baba has made demonstrably unreal and false statements in regard to prophecies about his own physical state.

At his 60th birthday, Sathya Sai Baba foretold that he would not physically age. But now look! And compare the various older photos with those only of the last days.

The newspaper Eenadu is the largest circulated Telugu newspaper in Andhra Pradesh (the State where Sathya Sai Baba lives), and claims a daily readership of over 10 million. (See my article: Sathya Sai Baba’s Slurred Speech Due To Old Age. ‘Eenadu’ News Report). Eenadu reported at the time of the last birthday:

“Lacking in Clarity: There was a lack of clarity in Satya Sai’s speech because of his old age. The interpreter struggled much to translate his speech into English. Satya Sai was seated in a special wheel chair which was brought very close to the car, so he could very slowly get into it. At the time of the speech, he stood up with great difficulty with the help of his assistants”.

Though, with what absurd self-deception, he has said:

“The attributes of the Avatars are beyond human comprehension…. Rama and Krishna were ever youthful. Have you ever seen a picture of Rama or Krishna with grey hair?….. Usually old people have wrinkles on their faces … I do not have any signs of old age. (loud applause). There is not a single wrinkle on My face”. Sanathana Sarathi October, 2002

“I do not suffer from any kind of disease because there is no trace of greed in Me. That is why I am always healthy…” Sanathana Sarathi September 2001, page 257f, 186

Sai Baba recently claimed he always smiles - but nowadays only this!
“Purity, patience and perseverance. With these three you are bound to acquire good health and bliss. You may believe it or not. But the truth is that these three are responsible for my health (Arogya) and bliss (Ananda)” (Sanathana Sarathi July 1995, p. 173)

60th Birthday Promise Of Not Physically Ageing – Falsified!

Our reports from Puttaparthi from reliable sources include that he has bouts that disclose mental difficulties.

In his public discourse March 13, 2002, he told thousands that his divine magnetism holds him to the ground, impeding his feet and hand movements:

“So when I put My foot down, the whole foot stuck to the ground. It is a little hard to lift a foot that is stuck. Wherever I walk, it sticks there. Whatever is held, it sticks to My (sic) hand. This magnet is not in everyone like this. This magnet is so powerful only in Divinity.”

Former co-founder and leader of the Norwegian Sathya Sai Organization, Robert Priddy has written:

“In 1998 V.K. Narasimhan (editor of Sanathana Sarathi) told me that Sathya Sai Baba had told him definitively that he had not had his hair cut for 20 years! However, photos taken of Sathya Sai Baba through that period show clearly that (around 1993/4?) his hair was suddenly seen to be about 1/3 or less of the volume it normally had. Then it slowly grew out again. I was present at the ashram at that time and observed this closer crop of his hair. So Sathya Sai Baba can tell his followers anything he likes, whether true or not, accurate or not, and get away with it! There have been any number of photos showing Sathya Sai Baba before and after a haircut (though this fact is never mentioned by devotees, of course. The condition of his thinning hair in 2010 is shown here. Even from these photos, all taken within a few years after 2004, one can see that his hair has been trimmed, fashioned etc. It is claimed too by Indian skeptics that he dyes his hair to keep it black, as he once predicted it would always be, and that he suffers from a bad skin condition as a result”.

Sathya Sai Baba’s Deceptive Hair Management

In Februry 2007, I made a note:  “the Australian scholar Brian Steel’s remark of February 2002 seems almost prescient:

It is just under a decade since Sai Baba informed devotees all round the world that his aircraft is about to take off to bring his mission to the whole world. But the runway, like his own imagination, would seem to have run away on him. He turned 81 last November (though evidence indicates that he has falsified his actual birthdate by three years). Here, in his own words, in almost in full flight, is yet another of his myriad failed predictions:

‘Swami’s mission has made this turn to face the runway. The 70th birthday was the signal from the tower to accelerate. In the 75th birthday, the airplane will leave the ground’.

Puttaparthi Sai Baba Celebrates 85th Birthday

Sathya Sai Baba: Incredible Pomp In Poverty-Stricken IndiaGolden Glitter For Sai Baba's 83rd Birthday

On 23 November, 2010, devotees from around the world celebrate Sathya Sai Baba’s 85th birthday. Their consciences need to be challenged. They can be asked:  How can they lend themselves to such wasteful displays of pomp and ceremony? How can those of them who have so cruelly rejected their once dearly beloved fellow devotees, whom they knew over decades to be good and decent human beings, proclaim that they are, as Sai worshipers, devotees of Truth, Love and Right Action? How can those Indian government and other dignitaries, whom we know to have been apprised in detail of the many worldwide allegations against Sai Baba, look at themselves and their families with any honesty? Below is a minute list of powerful political figures and celebrities who have used their name and fame to buttress up Sathya Sai Baba, irrespective of probing investigations by e.g., the BBC.  See:

For those prepared to look at a number of alternative views of how Sathya Sai Baba continues to bring India, in an aura of shame, to the notice of the world, the following is but the briefest selection of resources.

“President Pratibha Patil will attend  the birthday celebrations on Friday. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh be present at the Satya Sai University’s convocation on November 22. However, his tour was not yet finalised. The President will arrive in Puttaparti by 11.30 am in a special flight on November 19. Later she will address a women’s meet to be organised by the Eswaramma Mahila Samkshema Trust at Sai Kulawanth hall. After lunch, the President will leave for Delhi at 2.30 p.m. Prasanthi Nilayam is geared up for the visit of the VVIPs and the roads are teeming with devotees. Elaborate arrangements have been madefor the one lakh devotees expected on November 23. Around 120 free Annadanam counters would be opened at Puttaparti and Dharmavaram railway stations”.

The Golden Age of The World Sai Kingdom Is At Hand.  That gold is now flashing more than Disneyland-like at Puttaparthi, as thousands swarm around the golden honey-pot that he has created for the occasion of his 83rd birthday.

Shailaja, M. Seetha
1. ‘Is the Sai Baba’s empire beginning to disintegrate?’, 29 November 2000, www.saiguru.net/english/media/001129tehelka.htm
The preamble to the article inspired by Sathya Sai Baba’s lavish 75 th Birthday celebrations states: “There is no doubt that the low turnout at his birthday celebrations were an indication of the Sai Baba’s falling clout as a result of charges of child sexual abuse and the inexorable flaking away of his worldwide empire.” Other instances of journalistic hype include a reference to 37 million followers and “It is common knowledge that … mafia dons alike are given immediate audience with the Sai Baba and move around freely within the ashram even when the police are around.”

[Recovered from: http://web.archive.org/web/20050910004228/http://www.saiguru.net/english/media/001129grab.htm%5D This short article alleges that “The principal architects of the trust are now reportedly worried about the plummeting devotee numbers and even more desultory recruitment rate (see Is the Sai Baba’s empire beginning to disintegrate? ). They have suggested to the Sai Baba that he should travel abroad and hold sessions with devotees to kill rumours and counter increasingly murky publicity. (The Sai Baba has been abroad only once, to Uganda).”

Obama India Visit: Will He Have More Serious Concerns Than Sathya Sai Baba?

Posted by Barry Pittard on November 7, 2010

U.S. President Barach Obama and his wife Michelle have just arrived in India for a 3-day visit.  Key Sathya Sai Organization figures have long sought to influence leaders in the high echelons of power. See my article, which shows how a meeting between former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was narrowly averted:  Barach Obama’s Visit To India: Will Sathya Sai Baba’s Organization Try To Capitalize?  Posted by Barry Pittard on November 1, 2010.

Sathya Sai Baba – although now known to be mentally and physically sick and  ailing has long promised that the world leaders will come to him, and that he will establish Ram Raj – that is, to  rule the world as King of Kings, Lord of Lords. But see:  See:   Sai Baba – A Degenerative Disease? and Sai Baba’s Tip To Keep Ageing Away and Sathya Sai Baba Is Fast-ailing and Sathya Sai Baba’s Slurred Speech Due To Old Age. ‘Eenadu’ News Report

Asunto: [saibabanews] Sathya Sai Baba’s picture was given to Senator Barak Obama – Sept. 25, 2008
    Sai Ram All,
I just want to share the good news that Swami is with Obama. When Obama
Came to Pittsburgh in Sept unannounced for a private meeting with host
Committee in Pittsburgh, we were invited as a part of the host committee
Team. We had an opportunity to speak to him personally for few minutes.
I gave him Sai Baba’s picture, he took it and looked at it intensely and
Asked ‘who is this’? I told him HE is my spiritual guru and am
Giving you for your guidance, good luck and protection. He put the
Picture in the pocket of his coat and told me he will always keep it.
Few hours later, my husband got a call from Obama’s campaign manager
And security people as to what was that picture about because Obama kept
That picture in his wallet. My husband explained to them that the
Picture is our spiritual master and we gave him for his good luck,
Guidance and safety. They were ok with that response.
Few days ago, my husband was invited for Obama Victory celebration and the Same campaign manager said Dr. Sharma your guru’s picture has worked.
    Enjoy these four pictures.
Swami is with Obama and guiding him every step of the way. It augurs
    Well for the whole mankind.

A glance at Anita Sharma’s email (see below) is enough for anyone not a blind follower to get a glimpse of a particular phenomenon. It is one that occurs when the idolized guru figure is believed to have made an impact on this or that celebrated power figure. It is widely seen among worshippers of Sai Baba:  immediately mobiles, landlines and email systems run hot.  Ooo and ahhh – Look at the untold Grace our Guru is bestowing right round the world! Hilary Clinton wants to see Swami! Ohhh and hallelujah! and Jai Sai Ram! Did you know that I sat next to  Raisa Gorbachev in the Puttaparthi darshan and she told me that Michael Gorbachev keeps a book of Swami’s discourses by his bedside! Ooo ooo ahhh ahhh, I was at Puttaparthi when Swami sat Steven Seagal on a sort of throne next to Him. O what a Leela Swami plays! Ohooo, how wonderful it  was to see Goldie Hawn And Fergie (the) Duchess of York looking so adoringly at Swami – what a lovely role model she is!

Barach Obama’s Visit To India: Will Sathya Sai Baba’s Organization Try To Capitalize?

Posted by Barry Pittard on November 1, 2010

Note:  With the visit of U.S. President Barach Obama to India fast looming, I sent the following letter this morning.

    ———————————-

    1 November, 2010.

To Attention:  Anita Doll, Public Affairs Officer, US Embassy, Canberra, Australia.

    Dear Ms Doll,

I write as an international coordinator of a network of former followers of India’s most famous religious leader, Sathya Sai Baba. The wish expressed here is that President Barach Obama’s visit to India is not in any way used by the extremely powerful Sathya Sai Baba elements or sympathizers who occupy virtually every major power echelon in India.

The way in which, with the assistance of senior diplomats, such usage was averted in the case of the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s visit to India is recorded here: Tony Blair Was to Visit Sai Baba. Plan Thwarted.

We made successful representations to the UK Government, which led – with almost last-minute advice from the British High Commission in Delhi to the then British Prime Minister – to the cancellation of his intended visit to Sathya Sai Baba. Blair was within minutes of proceeding to Sathya Sai Baba’s establishment at Whitefield, just outside Bangalore.

Our group reflects very wide professional backgrounds, belief systems and countries of origin, and made, among other investigations appearing in some of the world’s leading media, large contributions to the BBC documentary ”The Secret Swami’ (2004), which has been seen by mass audiences in many countries around the world. See:  BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ and British Press Praise and The BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ – A Revision and BBC Footage Still Potent In Exposing Sathya Sai Sect (See Video Clips and Secret Swami Documentary).  See also: The Secret Swami summary by Robert Priddy – video clips and Indisputable facts about Sathya Sai Baba by BBC.

Salient details of earlier actions which led to the BBC’s contact with the US State Department in reference to Sathya Sai Baba are here:  U.S. State Department Named Sathya Sai Baba To BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ and here ‘The Secret Swami’ & U.S. State Department Warning against Sai Baba.  Later questioned by the BBC,

the  United States Government spokesperson confirmed to the BBC (as referred to in ‘The Secret Swami’), that the person referred to in their Travel Warning to U.S. travellers was in fact Sathya Sai Baba.

“CRIME IN ANDHRA PRADESH – Americans traveling to or residing in Andhra Pradesh should also be aware that there have been media and other reports of inappropriate sexual behavior by a prominent local religious leader. Most of the reports indicate that the subjects of these approaches have been young male devotees, including a number of Americans. Although these reports are unconfirmed, American citizens should be aware of this information”.

In your archives, you will find submissions made by many well-respected US citizens, led by (the late) Glen Meloy of southern California, and records of my own detailed discussion with John Peters 202-647-6179. Your other officer concerned was: Angela Aggeler 202-647-2114, who was the officer dealing with the media. Along the way, we were informed that two political officers from the US Consulate in Chennai made extensive enquiries into Sathya Sai Baba and the Puttaparthi ashram in the State of Andhra Pradesh, South India. We know from our involvement in many submissions, and via extensive reliable contacts, that a number of other governments, including my own (Australia) have also investigated Sathya Sai Baba and his international cult.

Questions have been raised in many countries, including the USA, about Sathya Sai Baba and the Sathya Sai Organization. Some of many areas of concern include: his large-scale, serial sexual abuse of boys and young men from many countries (including several in the USA), implication in police executions in Sathya Sai Baba’s bedroom in 1993 and the attendant, monumental cover-up (unsuccessfully opposed by a number of Indian senior police, journalists, a former Home Secretary and others) of these events.  See:  V.P.B. Nair. B.Premanand. R.Priddy: Sai Baba Bedroom Killings and The Unresolved, Covered-up 1993 Murders in Sathya Sai Baba’s Bedroom Revisited.

There is also deep concern at repeated allegations down many years of Puttaparthi front-office and other ashram scams, and misappropriation of funds raised in many countries that are sent in truly prodigious amounts to the Sathya Sai Central Trust in India. See:  Sai Baba, Kubla Khan, Citizen Kane, Bill Gates et alia and Donors and Would-be Donors Beware (Sathya Sai Central Trust Example).

In September 2000, after months of intense effort by former Sathya Sai Baba followers from several countries, UNESCO and its joint sponsor the University of Flinders, South Australia, withdrew sponsorship of a large international education conference on human values under Sathya Sai Baba’s aegis at Puttaparthi. After the (then) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Chubb, appointed a senior Staff member to investigate, delegates from Flinders University Institute of International Education cancelled. UNESCO’s Media Advisory stated:

“The Organisation is deeply concerned about widely reported allegations of sexual abuse involving youths and children that have been leveled at the leader of the movement in question, Sathya Sai Baba.”

UNESCO also filed a complaint against the Times of India (one of whose directors is a long-time key member of the Sathya Sai Central Trust) which gravely watered down the UNESCO Media Advisory. It subsequently printed the correct Advisory. UNESCO leaders had a number of Concerns, inter alia:

“Certain decisions were taken by the Institute of Sathya Sai Education without consultation, such as plans to hold some of the sessions at the Ashram of the Sathya Sai movement in Puttaparthi, and the inclusion of some speakers in the conference programme without their previous consent. Furthermore, the Organization is deeply concerned about widely reported allegations of sexual abuse involving youths and children that have been levelled at the leader of the movement in question, Sathya Sai Baba.””.  See:  The Case of UNESCO’s Missing Media Advisory.

One notes in current news reports that the Obama India visit team is taking great care to avoid unfortunate image problems. We trust that the depth of our past submissions, and the high credibility of your country’s citizens who have made them to you, that the US State Department will ensure that any attempts by the Sathya Sai Baba Organization and its appendages to garner capital via the Obama visit are not successful.

Ms Doll, would you please assure us of your Government’s strenuous efforts to review our concerns?

Sathya Sai Baba’s Chief Broadcaster Dr G. Venkataraman: Select Critical Articles by Barry Pittard

Posted by Barry Pittard on June 24, 2010

Dr G.Venkataraman is about as close to Sathya Sai Baba as it is possible to get. His worldwide brief as his international broadcaster and his deputy chairmanship of the Sathya Sai Organization makes it relevant to look at his performance. The reader may keep in mind the question:  Is Venkataraman’s performance what one would expect of a chief disciple of – supposedly – God fully incarnate? Of course, even the most eminent disciples of famous spiritual leaders of the past made some bad showings – but (if the historical records are to be credited) turned out okay in the final run home. But has Venkataraman done so? He has had decades of practice for the “run home”?

A detailed analyis of Venkatarman at work is found in Robert Priddy’s and Barry Pittard’s jointly authored, four-part article ‘The Sathya Sai Organization’s Deception and Propaganda Exposed’ .  To see his machinations in concert with the Vajpayee government and the then Director of UNESCO (which were exposed by the BBC’s David Saville), see: The Case of UNESCO’s Missing Media Advisory

    ………………………………………………………..

Sathya Sai Baba’s ‘Minister of Propaganda’ – Dr G. Venkataraman

“G. Venkataraman, formerly an intimate member of India’s nuclear bomb community, was Vice-Chancellor of Sai Baba’s university at Puttaparthi. He is now second-in-charge of the international Sathya Sai Organization, and head of Sai Global Harmony. The latter entity broadcasts, in affiliation with WorldSpace International Satellite Radio Service, 24/7 to many countries. With a behind-the-scenes corporate-style, assisted by the billions of funds that pour from many countries into the Sathya Sai Central Trust, the aim is to penetrate to every corner of the globe. A vital question will be whether politicians in democratic countries will be capable of distinguishing between the issue of freedom of religion and the issue of cults that decidedly do not, whatever may be their rhetoric, respect democracy …. Dr Venkataraman is tantamount to being Sathya Sai Baba’s ‘minister of propaganda’. Practically all heads of the Sathya Sai Organization are forbidden to comment on critical matters, but G. Venkataraman is an exception. The few spokesmen (and they are almost always men!) say very little, as one would expect of a virtually Soviet-style, cultic organization, with a leader and a deputy chairman who can both wax lyrical about how the former dictator of Uganda Idi Amin wept with tears of devotion over Sai Baba”.

Sathya Sai Baba’s Deputy Head, Dr G. Venkataraman, Speaks of “Mr Idi Amin”

“Dr G. Venkataraman speaks of how thrilling was Sai Baba’s account in this ‘Christmas’ 2006 discourse of his 1968 visit to Uganda! But oh, what an inspiring figure was Idi Amin to refer to in a Christmas message! In case G. Venkataraman or anyone badly informed of Idi Amin’s evil deeds and regime, here and here are BBC reports at the time of his death in August 2003 and a list of resources”.

“THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND” – GOD’S ORDERS and Sai Baba

“The issue is not about high-profile leaders who unavoidably find themselves mixing with monstrous human beings – for example, dignitaries simply going about their formal duties, such as a King, Queen, President etc. The clear issue is that both Sai Baba and G. Venkataraman enthused warmly about recollections of Sai Baba’s visit to Idi Amin in Uganda in 1968, saying how Amin and his retinue were in copious tears of devotion for Sai Baba. Amin was one of the world’s greatest monsters – causing a holocaust estimated at 400,000 people, torturing, raping, engaging in violent orgies and cannibalism. And yet  – Sai Baba (who claims to be all-knowing and God fully manifest on earth and come to save the planet before he leaves it) and Venkataraman showed the most appalling bad taste and absence of judgement”.

Sathya Sai Baba and Dr G.Venkataraman: Will They Disavow Their Idi Amin Fondness?

“Note how Venkataraman, on Sai Global Radio, refers to Mr Idi Amin. I may add that it is interesting that Amin claimed to have a direct line to God. Did he have in mind, specifically, Sathya Sai Baba? Perhaps Amin scholars may have something among their files, and can let us all know.

Sathya Sai Baba-Idi Amin Nexus. Fond Memories

Dr G. Venkataraman, Sathya Sai Baba’s Nuclear Boon Companion

Robert Priddy is the former long-time head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Norway and a retired philosopher in the Social Sciences, University of Oslo. He has written insightfully on the extraordinary, often Procrustean efforts of Dr G. Venkataraman to rationalise his beliefs in Sathya Sai Baba”.

Indian Scientist Dr G. Venkataraman Accused of Plagiarism

”In his article, Venkataraman – the most gullible physicist alive? Robert Priddy (see Wikipedia entry) notes:

Dr. G. Venkataraman reviews at length developments in our scientific knowledge of the cosmos… though nothing scientific that is not found in hundreds of books and other media. Venkataraman was a physicist working for the Indian government’s nuclear programme. However, he has copied his information on astronomy from other scientific authorities. Yet he does not once attribute anything he reports to its originators or to other scientific sources! He has even plagiarised text from the Dennis Dutton website, without any mention …

BBC Hidden Camera in ‘Secret Swami’. Ethical?

“Despite the alarum and excursions of Dr G. Venkataraman (and informally allied Sathya Sai Baba proxy defenders on the Internet whose libels and slanders are deemed by top lawyers in three countries to be extreme, widespread and highly actionable), the BBC had every just cause to shoot clandestinely. The extensive lack of accountability, transparency and of Duty-of-Care were not only seen clearly by the BBC but have also been noted by other world leading, high quality media in several countries”.

The International Sathya Sai Organization – an accessory to a massive libel and disinformation campaign. Open letter to the Prasanthi Council – c/o Dr. M. Goldstein, Dr. G. Venkataraman and its other members. Here is a quote from that document:

“Two semi-official pro-Sai web sites – saibabaofindia.com/ and saibabalinks.org/ – which could not operate without the help of central officials of the Sathya Sai Organization, Radio Sai Global Harmony and Sai ashrams, have links to websites which libel all former members who have spoken out. Such links reveal the obvious inability of Sai representatives in these groups to reply honestly and cogently to any of the many published allegations about Sai Baba made by those who were long respected members, in some cases prominent leaders, of his international organization. Furthermore, some members link to extremist web sites which have as their primary agenda contrived attempts at character assassination of ex-followers who present critical views. The most prominent of such sites are examined here and here.”

The one-hour BBC dcumentary, The Secret Swami (2004) on Sathya Sai Baba, is compelling, and was the work of more than seven intensive months. Its scope was, however, narrow indeed in comparison to a vast database that discloses that much else ails Puttaparthi Sai Baba and his forces such as the Prashanti Council and the International Sathya Sai Organization. Barry Pittard’s Guide To His Articles On The BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ (Exposing Sai Baba)

Posted by Barry Pittard on June 6, 2010

Busy journalists, scholars, institutional researchers, and the probing reader in general can do with shortcuts. The following is a guide to my articles written across some six years on the BBC’s one-hour documentary, The Secret Swami (2004) which, according to the BBC itself, has been aired in some two hundred countries.

    ————————–

The BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ – A Revision . (Extensive article by Barry Pittard, an international former Sathya Sai devotee coordinator and former lecturer at Sathya Sai Baba’s college in Whitefield via Bangalore, South India, who closely interfaced with the BBC and former devotees worldwide in the making of the one-hour documentary ‘The Secret Swami’, which has been aired in many countries around the world).

The BBC’s cameras at Sathya Sai Baba’s ashram at Puttaparthi in South India catch the pomp, circumstance, opulence and the highly stage-managed atmosphere of the crowded Mahasivaratri festival, February 2004. India’s most famous (and controversial) ‘Godman’ has promised a great miracle, the materialization from within his stomach via his mouth of a pure gold lingam (a Hindu cosmic symbol of creation) the size of a generous egg, in full public view. Viewers hoping to see this spectacle will not be disappointed – but they will see the sham in full close-up.

linghodhbhavam2004_0001.jpgSai Baba pretends to vomit up pure gold Siva Lingam. A few minutes later, he tells his vast audience, Out of the stomach emanated Shiva Lingas of the weight  of three tonnes.  That’s the reason why some strain on  the face and the body“.

    Datta, Tanya

Here is Tigrett’s statement to the BBC’s Tanya Datta in “The Secret Swami’

Tanya Datta: But even if it was proven to you that Sai Baba was a paedophile and a serial sex abuser, you’re saying it wouldn’t change the fact that he is your guru.

Isaac Tigrett: Absolutely not. Absolutely not. He could go out and murder someone tomorrow, as I said, it’s not going to change my evolution, it’s not going to change the good things that have come out of my relationship down there.

Tanya Datta: Does that mean that some part of you believes there could be some truth to the rumours?

Isaac Tigrett: Oh, absolutely I believe there is truth to the rumours.  See also: Isaac Tigrett. Selling Out Those Condemned to a House Of Blues

BBC Cameras Catch Sai Baba Cheating With Gold Sivalingam. (Film Clip)

‘Shiva Lingam’ so-called miracle. Filmed by the BBC for its documentary ‘The Secret Swami’ at Maha Shivarathri Festival at Puttaparthi (2004).  The carelessness with which Sathya Sai Baba botched his trick may be explicable by reference to other serious mistakes, in the context of his declining mental and physical health. Right Hand. Sleight Hand. Watch Sai Baba Cheat With Sacred Ash (Film clip)

Repeatedly, on footage of Sathya Sai Baba’s apparent miracles of the materialization type, an observer – other than one stricken with blind faith – can see the same technique that magicians use, the world over. Sathya Sai Baba’s Sleight Hand

    Sathya Sai Baba's Sleight Hand

SEE my article with links to some of the world’s most famous magicians (or illusionists) using sleight-of-hand far more sophisticatedly than does Sathya Sai Baba. He gets caught out; many devotees who see this react rather like the people in Hans Christian Anderson’s celebrated tale -’The Emperor’s New Clothes’. I have included the story at this link: When ‘Divine’ Magnetism Becomes A Dead WeightLearn how sleight-of-hand is done: Sleight Of Hand. The Sleightness of Sathya Sai Baba (Exposing film clips).  See also a well-documented (by DR, Denmark’s national radio and television broadcaster) case of Sai Baba’s fraudulent materialization, many of whose miraculous materializations, do not stand the test of professional evaluations:   Sai Baba – A Fake Avatar’s Fake Materialization

BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ and British Press Praise

Robert Priddy has bloggedUndisputable facts about Sathya Sai Baba by BBC’. This is a summary of a number of major factors that came out of BBC’s television documentary ‘The Secret Swami’ (2004) exposing Sathya Sai Baba and his worldwide cult. The documentary was seen by millions in around 200 countries. He cites a number of the many major British press reviews that highly praised this documentary, such as Andrew Billen, of The Times (of London), who wrote:-

“One of the richest supporters of the Indian guru Sai Baba – no less than Isaac Tigrett, co-founder of the Hard Rock Cafe – told his interviewer that he was perfectly willing to believe that Baba was simultaneously a) quite likely a paedophile and b) God incarnate”

BBC Hidden Camera in ‘Secret Swami’. Ethical?

Was it ethical for the BBC to use a hidden camera in ‘The Secret Swami’? It used it in the case of a highly elusive chairman of a world organization, Dr Michael Goldstein of Covena, California, that faces grave questions in India and many countries around the world. The Sathya Sai Organization, despite many claims not to recruit or fund raise should certainly be scrutinized by a public and its government, political and institutional organs, which it most definitely cultivates at both peak and local levels. Sanctions for the unusual use of hidden camera were obtained by the producers from top echelon BBC management and legals.

Despite the alarums and excursions of Dr G. Venkataraman (and informally allied Sathya Sai Baba proxy defenders on the Internet whose libels and slanders are deemed by top lawyers in three countries to be extreme, widespread and highly actionable), the BBC had every just cause to shoot clandestinely. The extensive lack of accountability, transparency and of Duty-of-Care were not only seen clearly by the BBC but have also been noted by other world leading, high quality media in several countries. tells the BBC cameras that the police killings in Sai Baba’s private quarters in June 1993 were “absolutely cold-blooded murder,” and that CID investigations, which were suppressed, showed many lies and cover-ups. He is seeking to re-open the case. Here is what Nair had to tell the BBC

India A Mature Democracy? BBC Probes

The Secret Swami reported that Sai Baba “cuts through the red tape” to provide water to poor villages via a costly pipeline. But the documentary missed the opportunity to suggest a major reason why successive Indian governments and opposition parties alike have covered for him. Yes, he (or rather his organization) accomplishes what they fail to provide, but with multi billions – the greater proportion of it from overseas! See my articles: Trade Follows Flag. BBC Caught UNESCO Head Bowing To Indian Government

The Genesis of the BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ (Sai Baba)

Our concerns addressed to UNESCO, Interpol, U.S. State Department, other governments, institutions and  leading world media – and now to the BBC – ranged far beyond the allegations of long years of wide-scale, serial sexual abuse by Sai Baba. These are itemized at the foot of my article: Serial Sex Molestation and Bedroom Killings. But Much More, HERE.

V.P.B. Nair. B.Premanand. R.Priddy: Sai Baba Bedroom Killings

The one-hour BBC documentary, The Secret Swami (2004) on Sathya Sai Baba, is compelling, and was the work of more than seven intensive months. As well as the reports of Sai Baba’s longtime serial sexual abuse of boys and young men from many countries, The Secret Swami reveals much, including information about gruesome Puttaparthi police killings in Sai Baba’s bedroom on June 6, 1993.

Many Indian journalists and editors and others know of the profound extent of the cover up by the then powerful Home Minister S.B. Chavan, and central, Andhra Pradesh State and local governments. It is a pity that very few have had the courage to speak out publicly on the issue, as has former Andhra Pradesh Home Secretary V.P.B. Nair, who was in office at the time of the killings. It is a sad commentary that very few had the courage in speaking out displayed by those such as Nair and B. Premanand. The BBC shot more than 80 hours of footage. It saw the impressive line-up of former devotee witnesses from various countries and, correspondingly, the sheer degree of cover up by Sai Baba’s officials. Consequently, the producers, Eamon Hardy and David Savill, obtained from the top Executives of the BBC permission to use the terribly sparingly-used resort of a hidden camera. They were able to get such a noble and spiritual glimpse of the Sai Baba’s world head Goldstein exploding with anger, and thus reveal a man whose lashing tongue, like that of his master, is frequently not known about by rank-and-file devotees.

The Genesis of the BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ (Sai Baba)

Protection of Young Was Initial Driving Force For Most Former Sai Baba followers

Sai Baba followers have attempted to discredit various major media that have listened to us with respect and seriousness, like the BBC, DR, CBC, SBS, ABC, Azul TV, India Today, Daily Telegraph, Salon.com, Guardian,  Age, Australian Financial Times, Guardian, and newspapers in Europe and Canada.

Guru Sex Abuse Testimony To BBC – After Years of Silence

In the interests of establishing a new life for himself, Mark Roche, who had quit Sai Baba at the beginning of the 90′s, preferred overall not to have contact with either devotees or former devotees. The issue was very sensitive with him, as is typical with those who have been sexually traumatized and who feel their deepest trust in their spiritual master betrayed (the latter of which is also a severe ordeal in itself, as many former devotees know who have not been sexually abused). In this way, painful and confusing memories are far easier to suppress.

Click Here for video clip of Mark Roche interview from The Secret Swami, BBC 2, This World, first screened, Thursday 17, 2004.

Probed On Male Sex Abuse, Sai Baba Evicts BBC TV Team

    goldiragingbull

Caught by BBC hidden camera: an angry and shouting Sai Baba’s world chairman, Dr Michael Goldstein of Covena, California, USA. He dismisses the BBC interviewer’s point about organization accountability and transparency and says of the worldwide serial sex abuse allegations against Sai Baba, “I would know it in my heart because I am what I am – a consummate professional. Can you understand that?”

Fortunately, before they were summarily thrown out, the BBC crew had shot close up valuable footage that clearly shows Sai Baba faking the miraculous production of a pure gold Shiva lingam or lingodbhava – a ‘cosmic egg’ from his stomach. He then – there are no signs of him faking this – faints. A few minutes later, in but one of his many statements that question the rationality of his devotees as well as his own, Sai Baba told his vast audience,

“Out of the stomach emanated Shiva Lingas of the weight of three tonnes. That’s the reason why some strain on the face and the body” See also: Sathya Sai Baba Chief, Dr Goldstein, Explodes. “I am the consummate professional” (See Film Clips)

To carefully go through these stark video revelations that expose Sathya Sai Baba cheating with his (so-called) miracles is to see why his chief defenders like Dr G. Venkataraman and Gerald Moreno have raised profound smokescreens and engineered such markedly distorted ‘pictures’ of hundreds of former Sathya Sai Baba devotees. Many of the latter, from many countries, spent deeply dedicated years of their lives serving him. Some of these were leaders such as Terry Gallagher (Australia), Stephen Carthew (Ph.D Program Candidate, Australia), Al Rahm (USA), Richard Nelson, Rick Raines (USA), Timothy Conway Ph.D (USA), Dave Lyons (USA), Serguei Badaev (Russia), Artur Wisniewski (Poland), Britt-Marie Anden (Sweden), Robert Priddy (Norway) …. Although it is men who in real fact lead the Sathya Sai Organization, prominent women leaders who have left after years of work on behalf of the organization include: Shirley Pike, Sharon Purcell and Elena Hartgering (both deceased), Lori Kaplowitz, Ella Evers, and many others …. Shirley Pike and Elena Hartgering have a long professional background as very qualified, experienced mental health counselors, as are a number of former devotees who have very carefully studied the accounts of Sai Baba’s sexual abuse survivors – and some have had personal contact with the terribly stricken individuals and their families and others who know them well.

Hollywood interests with a view to glorifying Sathya Sai Baba have been long attempted to raise finance for a movie. They hoped to obtain Nora Jones in a starring role. See: Dare Songstress Nora Jones Touch Sai Baba? However, pro Sathya Sai Baba forces are not alone in the movie world, and not all filmakers view charismatic, autocratic cults favourably. Let us see.

For the convenience of the many new readers coming to blogsites and web sites such as those whose links are given on the left hand side bar of this page, here is the BBC transcript of the 2004 one-hour documentary ‘The Secret Swami’.  The late Glen Meloy, Robert Priddy, and I were closely associated with the international co-ordination and research that went into the making of this documentary. It was seen in some two hundred countries around the world, and was one of a number of key factors in the monumental decline of the Sathya Sai religious empire. Well may his devotees ask why there has been such a marked marked erosion of his so-called ‘Sai Kingdom’  in many countries. The crisis of his international Sathya Sai Organization in having to make salvaging recruiting drives in costly and prestigious venues is exposed in this article: ‘Secret Swami’ Cult Recruits At Prime Public Venues.

In fact, the BBC unearthed compelling testimony from witnesses well beyond those who appeared on our extensively compiled international list.  Note: On the remarkable figure Glen Meloy – historic in terms of the exposure of Sathya Sai Baba and his cult, see: Glen Meloy (“Standing up for truth and goodness”) – In Memoriam

Sathya Sai Organization Spurns Leave-takers Whom It Formerly Honored For Decades

Posted by Barry Pittard on May 20, 2010

One of two documents addressed which prominent ex-office bearers in the Sathya Sai Organization have addressed to Sathya Sai Baba’s top officials is:

“Towards Public Accountability and Due Investigation:  A Formal Open Appeal To ‘The Prashanti Council'”

The so-called ‘Prashanthi Council’ is the ruling body over all Sathya Sai Baba instrumentalities. There was not even the courtesy of acknowledgement. It mattered nothing that signatories had given decades of the utmost dedicated service in his name. Or that they reflected the feelings of a great many who have, prompted by the keenest ethical principle, left Sathya Sai Baba and his organization.

At the head of the international Sathya Sai Organization is Dr Michael Goldstein, of Covena, California, USA. Here he is – how very spiritual this organization head of the supposed God Fully Incarnate – this Goldstein looks! – caught by a BBC hidden camera (See: The BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ – A Revision  and BBC Hidden Camera in ‘Secret Swami’. Ethical? and BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ and British Press Praise):

    mcenroe-couldnt-match-sai-baba-chief.jpg

    The document commences:

“The JuST group (Just Seekers of Truth), representing the 32 original signatories of the Public Petition for Official Investigations of Sathya Sai Baba and His Worldwide Organisation, has always been open for discussion of its contentions with any officials of the Sathya Sai Organisation or other accredited representatives of Sathya Sai Baba. In this connection, the recently-extended working committee of the international JuST group – most of whom appear among the 32 original signatories – would draw attention to the recent formation of ‘The Prashanthi Council’”.

More Testimony To Male Sexual Abuse By Sathya Sai Baba

Posted by Barry Pittard on May 1, 2010

In the exposure of Sathya Sai Baba and his cult, international coordinators such as Glen Meloy (deceased), Robert Priddy, Hari Sampath (in the earlier stages) and I have had a work which we never would have wished upon ourselves. To be privy to the direct accounts of those whom Sathya Sai Baba has terribly abused (sexually and in other ways), and to process still many more such harrowing accounts in the form of written testimony, has not been easy. (Not to mention other demanding aspects). Yet, there is the sense of great privilege of service to one’s fellow human beings, and that whatever skills one has have been able to be exercised for the good. Every year that passes will vindicate our stand against all the cover up and lack of accountability and transparency by Sathya Sai Baba and his international Sathya Sai Organization. As this organization knows to its great coast, many people have left it after they have found – including by conspicuously alternate routes to internet revelations or our own organized network – appalling revelations. Not untypically, these discoveries occur via experience of local centers. Some of these have, after extensive discussion and deep sadness, disbanded.

Below, Sebastian Engelbarts  of The Netherlands relates his account of abuse experiences at the hands of Sathya Sai Baba.  My close colleague Robert Priddy made all due effort to apprise Sebastian of what going public can invoke – as indeed is our strict practice with others in touch with us with their accounts – and the latter decided that he had the resolve necessary to withstand come-what-may.

I need hardly point out that, over several years, many testimonies have been shared with us with the request that they be kept confidential, and Robert Priddy and I (in our role of coordinators) – or others along a supportive network, often professional in background – have respected this. Other Sathya Sai Baba abuse survivors have stated that they would wish only to make public their experiences in the context of investigation by, for example, a respected organization such as the BBC, Times of London, TelegraphThe GuardianUNESCO, Interpol, etc.’ and/or by a court of law in a democratic country.

I wish to add – as often – that,  for those who wish to avail themselves of legal or counseling services, we are happy to assist in obtaining these in the context of international best practice, with all the proper guarantees of accountability. In genuine circumstances of need, professionals in these areas can look to fee modification or waiver. Those who may wish to support in any way a well-mounted legal action against the international Sathya Sai Organization, can contact Robert Priddy or myself, and we can refer to leading international legal personnel. It can be assured that this cause is both profoundly just and compelling. A similar situation obtains in ensuring counseling facilities for those individuals and families whose lives have been shattered by their past association with Sathya Sai Baba and his cult.

Just some of the recurrent themes have included:

attacks on the integrity of every individual who has stood forth, calling for proper, third-party government, police and legal enquiry into allegations against Sathya Sai Baba and the international Sathya Sai Baba Organization

    – the testimony to the genuineness of the abuse survivors by family, friends and those who have long known them

    – the unceasing testimony spanning decades, which keeps on coming to the present

    – the way in which much testimony has often come from those who have no knowledge of each others’ experiences

the wide number of countries from which the survivors and witnesses have come

    – the decades of dedicated service of many former devotees who have stood forth, and their long records of service in their professions, trades and wider communities

    – evidence coming from those who came to grief with Sathya Sai Baba but who were never devotees or any part of his organization

Why Has Sathya Sai Baba Not Faced The Indian Justice System?  Posted by Barry Pittard on January 14, 2010

My experiences with – and observations of – Sathya Sai Baba

    Date: 03-02-10

    By Sebastian Engelbarts
    The Netherlands.

In August and September of 2009 I went to India. I have been travelling to India 12 times since 1990. The first few trips my only goal was to go to Sai Baba. Later I also travelled to other places, all over India. All in all, I think I have spent at least one year in Prashanti Nilayam, spread over those almost 20 years.

At age 14 in 1975, I was initiated in Transcendental Meditation (TM), from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. I did the advanced course, called Siddhi Course, at age 17.

Though they still tell you that TM will bring you enlightenment, I am certain that it doesn’t. But in the beginning I eagerly believed that at age 21, I would be enlightened. I meditated regularly in the beginning years, TM brings you a lot of inner peace, but there is a lack of evaluating your experiences and life. To me it was a sort of wild growth. Being raised with TM, reading books of Rajneesh, Yogananda and all the books that come on your path, I was already being indoctrinated with the Indian way of looking at saints and sages, i.e. with reference, but without sound research and reasoning. This was because of my age, I guess.

So from age 21 (1982) up to 1990, I was struggling my way through life. At the end of 1989, a friend of mine told me to go and see Sathya Sai Baba. I knew nothing about him, I only knew what he looked like, because somewhere down the years I saw a picture of him and remembered his name. He also gave me a picture of swami that had a text saying “No one can come to me unless it’s my will”. So this was my second conditioning. I prayed to Sai Baba to please let me come and I promised I would stay for 3 months.

So early 1990 I went to India. Once in the ashram I was immediately caught by his books, all telling about the satpoorna  (full) avatar. I remember that I thought ‘if this would only be true, how fortunate am I and the people here in the ashram: An accumulation of many lives of hard spiritual work, now we are here in the presence of God himself.’ And here it seemed they had rules and regulations, I was missing in TM, and with love as its core.

I wasn’t particularly proud of myself, for all the things I had done wrong for the past few years. So trying to make up for it, I lined up everyday, but always hid behind someone else, because he could see right through me, I thought.

Six weeks passed and I had made a lot of western friends, as in the beginning I would walk up to anybody I saw going in for interview. So I heard a lot of amazing stories, saw all kinds of rings, necklaces etc.

I was in a Dutch group hoping for an interview and we got one after six weeks. But just some days before, a Swiss girl, who I thought was well balanced, she was a nurse and wasn’t much a person of outer appearance, had an interview with a Swiss group. She told me that Sai Baba scolded her for not dressing up properly, although all parts of her body were covered according to the rules. The only thing I saw was that she was wearing wide pants instead of a sari and the colours had faded from all the washing. She was devastated and so was I for her.

One or two days previous to our interview, an Argentinean group had an interview. A guy called R., was constantly harassing Sai Baba for interviews and successfully, as I saw Argentinians getting a lot of interviews, thanks to him. I think he was gay (I could not make it out, but one of the Argentinean girls told me), so I won’t mention his name, but I think it is important for the rest of the story.

So the Argentineans all walked up to the veranda, preparing for the interview. One Argentinean woman was not paying attention and only after somebody told her, she walked towards the veranda. Swami, by then, had finished his walkabout (darshan) and saw her walking towards the veranda. Then in a very cruel way he said to her ‘kssjjjt’, as if he was chasing away a dog. The woman, between 30 and 40 years of age, was shocked and walked back in disbelief. As she was walking back, you saw she was doubting whether this was meant for her, so she turned around and walked towards the veranda again. Then swami repeated his “ksssjjjt’ and she walked out crying. I was thinking to myself, that if he would do that to me, I would instantly drop dead on the spot, unable to bear something like that.

So, once in my room, I prayed to him not to chase me away like that, if we had an interview, but instead for him to treat me like he was my father. I was also asked, previously to the interview, by a lot of western guys to come with them to Goa. It was tempting, but I promised swami I would stay for 3 months. So I also prayed he would give me an answer as to whether I could go or not.

So, then finally after six weeks we got the interview. I was shaking and as I sat down on the veranda, I did not look at him, pretending not to see him in case he was going to chase me away. Once in the interview room I found myself sitting very near to swami, only an older Indian Dutchman in front of me. At least I had someone to hide behind a little, as he was not very tall. From what I have been reading lately on exbaba.com, he has the habit of walking to the fan, turning it on, as if making it comfortable, but also to take 2 vibhuti pills (‘holy ash’) , that are put there by one of his inner circle. He did the same thing at the beginning of the interview. He was already sitting and instead of asking the person sitting under the switch, he himself got up and turned it on. Walking back he materialized vibhuti twice, as there were a lot of women. All in all I estimated the gathering to consist of about 40 people; a Dutch group, a Swedish group and several Indians. Later on I started seeing that he has more of such routines.

After distributing vibhuti only to the women, he sat down. Then he shifted the attention to the back (one of his routines), asking a woman about her sight. She said she was happy with what she still could see. It turned out she had only about 15% sight in both her eyes. I never noticed. But he knew or was it a lucky guess or had he watched them while they were going in?

She was in my group for 2 weeks, but I couldn’t tell and she was always walking hand in hand with a girl friend. So swami ‘knew’ and ‘materialized’ a lingam. Explaining that it was the universe etc. He then, very proudly, showed it to everybody and said it had identical sides, that nowhere in nature this could be found, only God can make this. He gave it to her and told her to put it in a glass of water and drink the water daily.

Somehow this is contradictory to what he tells, that god doesn’t go against his own laws, yet for an ardent devotee who deserves it, he will make it out of nothing. Otherwise he would transfer it from somewhere. He obviously violated his own law, because he said that nowhere in nature it could be found. So he must have created it from nothing. Why, was she that special? Maybe, I don’t know.

Then again he shifted the attention to the back, asking a young Indian boy about his stomach. The boy said that he had no problems with his stomach. Swami said ‘yes, yes, not good’ and materialized a golden ring with a diamond. He explained that the diamond stood for ‘die mind’. He then called the boy to the front and placed it on his finger. It fitted and swami said ‘See, swami always makes perfect fit’. As I read more stories, this isn’t always the case, to put it mildly. Didn’t he know the stomach was ok, or didn’t the boy know about his bad stomach? Then turning to me, he said “what do you want?’ I said ‘just your blessing’ and he hit me on the head quite firmly.

Why did he shift attention all the way to the back, so that everybody would look around?  Did they just happened to sit there, or did he need some time to grab behind his cushion?

The old Indian-Dutch man in front of me was so incredibly excited, that he couldn’t keep quiet. Sai Baba several times told him to shut up and otherwise didn’t pay attention to him at all.

Then swami got up and opened the door to his private interview room and invited all of us in. As I had already been sitting in the front and as I was one of the first to enter the private interview room, I thought about letting others sit in front instead. So I entered, made a left turn to go and sit against the wall, away from his chair. He suddenly turned around and said “No, no, you come”. He took me by the hand as he walked towards his chair. He held my hand while sitting down and placed his right foot exactly on my penis and pushed me down, all the while keeping his foot there, till I was sitting. He held my hand, stroked my arm, ran his fingers through my hair, pulled my nose and my cheeks. I wasn’t shocked, but I knew it was not an accident, that he placed his foot there. So this was going through my mind and also I felt awkward and embarrassed sitting there at his feet, him caressing me, while others were sitting at least 2 meters from him. He was treating me like a father, wasn’t he? Fond of his son.

I was also thinking, ‘shouldn’t I be feeling something, sitting here hand-in-hand with the lord of the universe’? He was talking away, while I was feeling embarrassed. Why did I have this good fortune? I didn’t live an exemplary life, on the contrary. As I was pondering about what was going on, he turned to me and said,  “Where is your wife?” I said in Holland. He said, “Is it your wife or your girlfriend?” I said ‘it is my girlfriend’. He said “Not good, two boyfriends, but she has got only one heart”. And it was true. Just before I left for India, I found out that my girlfriend, since I was a mess, was seeing a former boyfriend. But why these questions? Was he checking me out if I was available or did he know? What was the importance whether she was my wife or not? Did he know or did he guess, since I was not wearing a wedding ring? Did he know she was seeing her old boyfriend or was he trying to put doubts in my mind? To me it seemed later that it is one of his routines to ask questions, so it doesn’t matter what answer comes, yes, no, maybe. Your mind always finds a way to fit it in somewhere, thinking that it is that, what he is referring to. Then he talked away again and again turning to me saying “Time waste, money waste, too many women”. I thought to myself, time waste is correct, money waste also. From my viewpoint it was true, from his viewpoint it is true for all westerners. You’re supposed to think of God 24/7, if not, it’s time waste. Money waste is also true for all westerners, since he says you need only one pair of shoes. All westerners have more than one pair of shoes.

But then ‘too many women?’ That was not true. I was sort of a handsome guy, but I was, until then, not so much interested in women. I was too busy sorting out life. If I look back, at the time I was with Baba, I was 29, looking younger, there were enough women who were interested in me. I let almost all of them pass by. So this, about too many women, was puzzling to me. But isn’t sex quite normal in the west and for sort of a handsome guy, already living for 29 years, I could have had enough sex. But I wasn’t that much interested. A few years later I made up for this, so I was telling myself that it was that what he was referring to. That I would have a lot of women in the future. The mind can bend everything in any direction, if you’re not facing the facts.

After sitting like this for maybe 20 minutes, Sai Baba took us back to the first interview room and now as I was leaving the room as the last person, again I was sitting in front of swami, as his chair is near to the door.

He then asked if there were any questions. One Swedish boy told swami that he had an accident with his motorbike. Swami immediately reacted, saying “Yes, yes, I know. Terrible accident, but I was there, I saved you”. Did he? Then why didn’t he avoid the plane crash at Bangalore airport in February 1990. It was a plane from Indian Airlines, a domestic flight from Bombay, in which there were several devotees, who died.

I can recall an interview somebody told me about. When I asked about it, the guy told me that there was an old Indian man, grief stricken, as he had sent his son to ask Baba some things. He was in the plane that crashed and when he asked Baba about it, he said “don’t worry he is with me now and he’s fine”. So, if you don’t die, he saved you and if you die, nobody has to worry, because he is with swami now. It’s that simple.

Anyway, about the Swedish boy. He had been in the hospital for 10 months and he had undergone multiple surgeries. They were planning more surgeries, but gave him a break, so he could recover first. He asked swami whether he should have more surgeries and swami said “No, no, I will take care of you”. I have met the guy several times since. In the beginning he was accessible, although difficult. But after a few years he didn’t talk to anybody anymore. He looked extremely unhappy, depressed, and angry. I think after ’98 I haven’t seen him again.

After he finished the conversation with the Swedish boy, he told the group that he would be leaving for Brindavan and asked if we were all coming with him. Then he looked at me specifically and said “Are you coming with swami to Brindavan, it’s such an opportunity for you to be with swami”. So here was the answer. I wasn’t supposed to go to Goa, but to stay with him. He knew about my promise, didn’t he? Or was it for some other reason. Before leaving the interview, a lot of people took out a picture and swami wrote on it ‘With love, Baba’.

As I didn’t have a picture of swami, I took out a picture from my money belt. It was a picture of my son, who was 3 years old. I gave it to swami upside down, but somehow he saw, probably because of the photographic paper, that it was different. He turned it around and as he saw it wasn’t a picture of himself, he threw it on the floor before me in a kind of angry way. He could have given it back in a decent way as I was only sitting 1 meter in front of him. Why did he reject it this way, rejecting my son like that? Was this the same man, who just before, had overwhelmed me with his love? The days after the interview I was drained of energy, depressed, feeling nothing had changed.

A lot of Dutch people were going home, so we decided to form an international group and went to Brindavan. There were Swiss, Australian, British, German and Dutch in our group.

In our group was a British guy, called Keith. His story is also on the Internet (http://213.10.134.161/rvdsandt/ex-baba/engels/witnesses/keith.html). He had told me that he had come to Sai Baba to find out what had happened between his boyfriend and Sai Baba in 1989, who had several interviews with swami but on returning home to the UK, he committed suicide. During my stay in Puttaparthi, I hung out with Keith a very handsome, beautifully built, dark skinned young man. We lined up together and one time we were in row 8 somewhere, as swami walked by. He looked at Keith and then at me and again at Keith and called him in for an interview. Afterwards Keith told me that swami had no time for him now, but he would have another interview soon.

I was puzzled as to why swami invited Keith instead of me or the both of us, for he looked some time at the both of us. It started to dawn on me that it looked like swami had a very good eye for gay man. I started paying attention to this and over several years found out that when he singled out men, a lot of times they were gay. After the interviews to these men, I went up to them asking about the interview. On many occasions they had been given rings, a lot of times a silver ring with an enamel portrait of swami. Keith had one.

I realize that it could be a coincidence: that it just happened by chance when I was around.

Anyway, after maybe two weeks while we were in Brindavan, the international group got an interview along with a Dutch group. Alexandra Nagel was in that interview, as well as Keith.

I don’t know how it happened, but again I was sitting right in front of swami. I wasn’t doing it on purpose as my mind was blank of any elation. In this interview men and women were not sitting separately and swami didn’t distribute vibhuti.

Swami again started off with shifting the attention to the back by asking an old Dutch lady, who was over 80, how her legs were. As she didn’t understand English, somebody had to translate it for her and as she answered the translator back and he was ready to give swami the answer, he was already involved in a conversation with us young boys in the front. I thought to myself that it wasn’t very decent, he seemed not at all interested in her answer. So the translator never gave her answer. I thought to myself, here they are, two ladies well over their eighties, very religious. They were raised as Christians, but it could never satisfy their needs. Then they read a book about Sai Baba and found what they were missing. Their children paid for their tickets and they came together with a Dutch group. Here they are in the interview room, being asked a question, but never being able to answer it. Incredible. Did he again need some time to grab behind his cushion, by shifting the attention to the back?

He said to a Dutch guy next to me ‘Oh! You have a ring, let me see. Oh! Picture of swami,  how nice. Give it to me.’ But the ring had been given to the guy by swami in a previous interview, why did he act so surprised? Was it because on the market you could buy the same rings and he didn’t remember the guy anymore after seeing so many people every day? Anyway, by then I had read many stories about how he changes rings. So I thought, now I will be witnessing one. He took the ring and I was focused on his hands. To my utter astonishment he buried the ring in his right palm, leaned forward, shuffled his right hand behind his left arm, almost entirely against the left side of the chair and kept his hand there for a while. I could not see his right hand anymore as he was leaning forward towards the guy, who was sitting, seen from his side, on the left. And his left arm was also blocking his right hand. Now I was completely crazed. Here I am sitting, one meter in front of swami, an opportunity of a lifetime event and now he starts playing tricks on me. Finally he drew back his hand and kept it in front of us, but still covering it in his palm, he blew three times on his hand and out came a golden ring with three diamonds. He asked the guy if he wanted the ring twice. The guy responded twice ‘whatever you want swami’. Then he put down his hand again, but I didn’t pay attention anymore, as I was too much in my head. He again blew three times on his hand and out came the same old ring.

After all this, swami stood up and called a 26 year good looking guy from the UK into his private room, behind a curtain. Don’t remember his name. From where I was sitting, I could peak through the curtain. Swami was facing my way and the guy was standing with his back towards me. I saw them standing close together, but could not see what was happening. Swami looked at me, knew I could see them, but he wasn’t bothered by it. When the guy came out, he called me in. I kneeled before him and he put his hand on my shoulder. He asked when I would be leaving and that he would see me again before I was going. This never happened.

Once the interview was over, we all wanted to know what swami had said to the English guy, but he remained silent for three days, only talking to his girlfriend. Finally after 3 days, he came out with the story. Swami had asked him to lower his pants and as he hesitated, swami told him not to worry as he created him. So he lowered his pants and swami oiled his genitals. At this certain point, he was ok with it, because swami had probably healed him.

One year later I went back to India and I ran in to Hari from Australia, who was also in our international group, the previous year. Hari told me about Keith who had several interviews in private and that in one interview swami took his hand and put it between swami’s legs and Keith felt female genitalia. Than he had to do padnamaskar (touch his feet) and as he got up, swami again took his hand and Keith felt an erected penis. I don’t know if anything more had happened, but Hari told me that whenever Keith went for darshan afterwards, he held up his necklace with a cross on it, whenever swami walked by. He thought swami was some sort of devil; Ravana.

By this time I was really getting worried, as evidence was mounting and was told by people with whom I was sharing rooms, lining up and spending my days with. What to do?

I found out that Hislop was in the ashram. I read some of his books and knew he was close to swami. He also used to be the first TM teacher in the US way back in the sixties, before he met Sai Baba. Maharishi had spent some time at his home in the US. One day I saw him in the southern canteen, I walked up to him and asked him whether I could ask him some questions. “Of course”, he said, “Shoot.” So I asked him about all the confessions of the rituals regarding the oiling of male genitalia, swami’s transformation from female to male etc. He obviously hadn’t expected these questions, so he became quite uncomfortable. He didn’t answer my questions, but stated the following, “There is no doubt in my mind that swami is divine.” I asked him what swami thought of Maharishi and TM and the Siddhi Course. He said that swami told several people to stop this meditation. Swami also told a couple who had learned how to teach other people TM that they should stop as they were not able to teach meditation. And that the Siddhi Course was children playing with fire. But the same swami tells people in interviews not to go to any other gurus, and why go to these human gurus if you can have God as your guru, thus referring to himself. The other ones were money gurus and he was not. Now we know better.

On that same trip, we went to Brindavan before going to Kodaikanal. In Brindavan in a weekend at morning darshan, there was an Indian couple. Their baby was very ill, it seemed lifeless. Everybody was upset and eagerly waiting for swami to help them out. As swami came out, he totally ignored the pleas of the couple and of all the other devotees who wanted him to help them out. The couple stayed all day and in the evening darshan he again completely ignored them and went back to his living quarters. I don’t exactly know what happened to the couple. But I do know that there was an interview for all the westerners some days later, where he told a story about a mayor and a lawyer, who were in full control of a village and they ripped people off and disowned people from their property. It seemed that he was referring to the woman and the child in a previous life and that their suffering was self-inflicted. But that we, mere humans, could not oversee the whole picture but he could, so he was not moved by their despair. What grandeur!

We went to Kodaikanal, where again all the westerners were called in for interview.  He scolded us for sleeping around, man and women sharing rooms. That he disapproved of all such things. But since there was no accommodation other than hotels, private homes, of course people who knew each other shared rooms, to cut down the costs. Prices were high, when swami was around. Even I shared rooms with women and men, but it was not a sexual thing at all. Maybe some people slept around. But what a generalisation and again a putting down of sincere seekers.

In1992 I went to Puttaparthi again, but I wasn’t able to line up anymore. I kept to myself and didn’t return before 1997.

At home I tried to live up to his rules, but I found it completely impossible. I went to groups, singing bhajans, but after 3 times of bhajans, I was fed up. We in the west have such beautiful classical and modern music. Do we have to end up singing these simple songs, about myriad aspects of God, over and over again? I didn’t like them and compared to western music it was utterly boring. I also couldn’t stand all the stories that were told during these meetings, but from people lacking experiences, just parroting stories.

However, after I left in 1992, I started a company and it rocketed sky-high for several years. Of course we, by then my wife and I, having 2 children, dedicated this to swami. So, we were trying in this way to help people. But in 1996 my wife left me, for she had married her first real boyfriend. She wanted some more experiences. My whole world collapsed. I found myself in an isolated position, as her father and her new boyfriend were working in our company and turned against me. So again being a complete mess I went to India in 1997. By that time I was really angry with swami for destroying my life. If you take one step towards me, I will take a hundred steps towards you. I took hundreds of steps, drove hundreds of kilometers, flew thousand kilometers to him, but still not a single step did he take towards me.

He claims: “If you shed one tear for me, I will wipe a hundred from your cheeks.” I’ve shed thousands of tears, not one was wiped of my cheek. “No leaf will fall from a tree, unless it’s my will.” So ruining my life happens because of his will. Thank you very much.

If he asks you a question, no answer will do, you’re always wrong. Even if he asks you the same question the next day and you repeat his answer to the question, he comes up with a different answer. You’re always wrong, everything you do is wrong. He is constantly putting you down and saying that he is the sole solution. You become dependent, depressed and insecure. Though in your prayers you don’t ask for wealth, but for a good heart, character etc. nothing happens. You wait and wait and wait, but nothing is going to happen.

For women it’s even harder, he most of the time completely ignores them. Using phrases like “Wife, knife”. WIFE meaning, “Worries Invited For Ever.”

But still I was doubting myself, so here I was again in Puttaparthi in 1997, looking at this clown in his orange robe. After 2 days I told swami in my mind that if he would not let me meet people I know, I would leave. For I knew nobody anymore. So what happened, I met the beautiful family that I also met in 1990. Swami’s grace or coincidence?  This family looked to me like the perfect Sai family. They were leading a centre, wrote and played their own bhajans. They came for the ultimate proof, that Sai Baba was what he and the parrots said he was. This was the family which the BBC documentary “The Secret Swami” is largely about. I saw them getting interviews, I saw most of the rings, necklaces, earrings, watches. But I never really knew how it ended, because I left before they did. After seeing the movie, I realised that they had their ultimate proof, but in what a sad way. They were so nice and willing to do anything for swami and he destroyed them. I am fully convinced of the integrity of this family.

From ’97 till 2002 I went back to Puttaparthi once or twice a year. Every time I was there, I thought ‘what am I doing here?’. I hardly lined up to get to be at his ‘darshan’ and when I did, all the time I would see his vibhuti routine. Coming out from his living quarters, he was always lifting his robe a little with his left hand, so he could keep his hand closed. Then he takes letters with his right hand and puts them in his left hand. Then he walks on, but now without holding his robe, because now he has the letters in his left hand and uses them to keep his hand closed. He walks over to someone and you can see his right hand going to his left, to take the vibhuti pill from underneath the letters, but he always manages to distract people, so they look at his face. Unless you know. When he transfers the vibhuti, you can see the fingers of his right hand are closed together and very soon he materializes vibhuti. After this, as he walks on, the fingers of his right are spread open, because he doesn’t have to hide the vibhuti pill anymore

Once, as I was sitting in the front row, he accidentally dropped one pill in front of me. Immediately he placed his foot on it to crush it and looked at me with a big smile. As he moved on, the Indians got up to pick some of it and put it on their forehead.

At that time I also thought, why aren’t we hearing anymore about the water projects and of more seva (service) projects. But instead we see him spending a lot of money on the hundreds of festivals. Not for his sake of course, but out of his love for the people that are gathered around him. This was not very motivating to people who were willing to do seva and spend their money and time to the sick and needy.

In 2009, on my last visit, I stayed in Puttaparthi for about 10 days, outside of the ashram. I only once walked in and sat down on the mandir ‘temple compound’. Swami was sitting there in his wheelchair. After 2 minutes, I got up and left. Was this the same swami, who said that one day we would only see him as an orange spot in the far distance, for there would be vast crowds? Was this the swami that would live till 96 years of age? Was this the avatar who said that it was not in his nature to fail his mission, which is to restore Dharma and that nobody could stop him?

Finally somebody outside told me a little about what had happened to ‘the perfect sai family’ I met in ’90 and ’97. Once home I finally went to the site exbaba.com which I had been avoiding since swami’s outrage in 2000, where he told his followers “Not internet but innernet” about the liars and that we ought not to talk about these things. I saw the movie ‘The Secret Swami’. I read a lot of articles and finally everything fell in place. I had been stubbornly ignoring all the signals for the past 20 years. I can tell so much more, but I will end here. For I think swami is not capable of his sexual misbehaviour any more and I would not be surprised if he were to die soon.

My final conclusion. I don’t believe swami is omniscient, omnipotent nor omnipresent. He is clever and cunning and has a good eye for deceiving people. He mostly asks questions and it doesn’t matter what answer you give, he will end up saying ‘I know’. I’ve seen so many materialisations, but the ones I saw from close by, were all fake ones. As were the so-called diamonds. I’ve seen diamond rings with scratches from the concrete, as people were getting up. Only diamonds can scratch diamonds, not concrete or sand or whatever.

Before any materialization, he shifts the attention away from him and his hands. It seems to me that he hates women and mostly ignores them, treats them badly and talks bad about them. Indeed he is only interested in younger males and they get a lot of attention in interviews and he is abusing them. I think he has a good eye for gay men. I think villagers know about these things and there are not many that believe in him. But they keep quiet out of fear for the police and because the westerners are their source of income. I believe he is somehow connected to the murders and if he were omniwhatever, he would have foreseen it and could have set an example of ‘love thy enemy’. How can any devotee ever think that the murders were part of his Divine Play (i.e. leelas!). But many of us, including myself, always find some satisfying inner answer. Again, the mind can do it all.

At the beginning of my first trip, I met two Italian boys, somewhere in their mid-twenties. One boy was called Francesco and he was a very good looking boy. He told us about his private interviews with Sai Baba. In one of his private interviews Baba gave him an amount of money. By now, we all know why. Obviously to keep him silent, because we, mere mortals, would not understand. In one of his interviews swami said to the boy that he had been Saint Francis of Assisi in a previous life.

On my second trip, one year later, Francesco was still hanging around and had met an Indian girl from Singapore. When the Singapore group got an interview, the girl told swami that she had met a boy and that she asked swami whether if he was fit for her. Swami asked for the boys name and she said it was Francesco. Then swami in a loud voice said ‘no, he is worse than a dog’. Many times swami says that dogs at least have reason and season. So being worse than a dog means, having sex without reason and season. Does Sai Baba  have reason and season, while taking advantage of young boys?  You can judge.

After my last visit (2009), I started reading everything I could find on the internet and after seeing ‘the secret swami’, I was fully convinced that I had been deluded, for the past 20 years. I have to say I was a willing victim, in denial of all criticism and my own experiences and observations.

However, one thing was still bothering me. Somewhere between 1997 and the year 2000, I met a family, who wish to stay anonymous. Their daughter had become very ill in India. Being completely dehydrated, the parents feared for her life. While the mother was staying in their apartment inside the ashram, the father and son went for morning darshan. They were sitting in the front line, opposite to where I was sitting. As swami walked by, the son told him, that his sister was very sick. Swami walked on, but 5 metres further he stopped and summoned the boy to come forward. He materialised vibhuti and gave it to the boy. They brought it to the girl.

In the afternoon darshan, again they were sitting in front line and again I had a clear view of them. As swami came out, he walked straight up to them and asked about the girl. She wasn’t any better. He then materialised, as the father told me, something that looked like a tablet, not vibhuti. They gave it to the girl and she got a little better.
By at that time I was about to leave for home and in my mind swami performed a miracle, by curing the girl. In my mind, I was completely convinced he had healed her. However, I never had any contact anymore with the family, so I couldn’t check the details.

So after reading on the Internet the testimonials of ex-devotees and watching all the movies of the testimonies I could find, it became clear to me, that I never ever had seen any miracle. By now I convinced that swami had no powers whatsoever, at least he did not have them during  those 20 years I was there.

But there was still this memory about the girl that got healed. Through sending e-mails to several people, I got hold of the father and I asked, if he could clarify me on this point. He then told me that the girl got a little better, but at home they had to contact a regular doctor, for her full recovery. I asked the father what he thought about the whole act. He had come to the same conclusion as I had, even though I had not told him mine, because in no way I wanted to influence his insight. Only afterwards I told him of the fact that I had come to the same conclusion.

Our conclusion; as swami walked past the boy, who told him about his sister, he had to walk a little further, for he hadn’t yet transferred the vibhuti tablet from his left to his right hand and when he had done so, he called the boy forward. In the evening darshan, as he walked straight towards them, he had pharmaceutical tablet, probably from one of his doctors and he wanted to get rid of it as soon as possible. It didn’t heal the girl, it just helped her to get back home and visit a regular doctor. The family, throughout the years was witness to a lot of fake materialisations. They considered it a test of their faith. But after this incident however,  they lost all faith and interest in swami and have moved on since, with a life without swami.
So far for the lord’s healing powers.

I thank everyone who came forward with stories and movies. I am specially thankful for ‘The Secret Swami’ as that movie finally opened my eyes. I wish all of them well. I remember the phrase of the son in the movie saying ‘any life is better than a life with Sai Baba’. And what about Baba’s saying ‘No one can fathom my grandeur’. Grandeur of what? The cheating, the molestations, the murders, the money wasted? I don’t want to fathom such grandeur.

    Greetings, Sebastian.
