Will V.P.B. Nair Keep His Word To BBC On Sathya Sai Baba?

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 8, 2011

In mid 2004, former Andhra Pradesh Home Secretary, V.P.B. Nair spoke to the BBC in its 2004 television documentary – ‘The Secret Swami’ – about the official corruption that attended the police killings in Sathya Sai Baba’s bedroom in June 1993. He said he intended to take steps to get the case re-opened.

I again ask:  has Nair done what he told the BBC that he would do? And, indeed, hope that Indian citizens ask him:

Have you, as you told the BBC that you would do, made efforts to keep your promise to see that there is a proper investigation into the killings at Puttaparthi?

CLICK HERE for a film clip from the BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’, in which V.P.B. Nair speaks of the killings, which he said were in ‘cold blood’.  And HERE to read the transcript of Nair’s statement:  BBC Interview with V.P.B. Nair

Only the Indian people can rally their sense of national honor and rise up and demand answers from their authorities, who continue to protect Sathya Sai Baba.

Here is the extraordinary fact: Exposure of these killings in Sai Baba’s bedroom at Puttaparthi, and of the subsequent suppression by local, state and central government of the police investigations, has been effectively left up to two individuals gifted with cussed unstoppableness – the late Basava Premanand in India and Robert Priddy in Norway.

The lengths to which Premanand and Priddy have gone to examine the welter of documentation have demanded much sacrifice of time and energy, as have their many other Sai Baba exposure efforts. They have been attacked, reviled, and libeled.

Priddy and I kept in touch with Premanand over the years, and this contact allowed us a degree of confidential insight into the very real risks to life and limb that Premanand ran in a country so volatile as India.

Soon after Basava Premanand’s death, I wrote a tribute – about a man whose decency and valor both Robert Priddy and I had come, over the years, to know from personal dealings with him:

V.P.B. Nair Told BBC Sai Baba Bedroom Killings Were “Coldblooded Murder”

Posted by Barry Pittard on January 6, 2011

In mid 2004, former Andhra Pradesh Home Secretary, V.P.B. Nair – see:  The BBC and the 1993 murders – spoke to the BBC about the official local, state and central government cover up that attended the police killings in Sathya Sai Baba’s bedroom in June 1993. He said he intended to take steps to get the case re-opened. But has he done anything of the sort?

Most major Indian media have entirely failed to tackle Sathya Sai Baba and his incredibly wealthy and influential cult. The exceptions have been:  India Today, Tehelka, The Cavaran and (to a small extent) Hindustan Times. The job of exposure has been via the foreign media – e.g., BBC, CBC (Canada), DR (Denmark), Salon.com (USA), SBS, ABC (Australia, Times of London, Daily Telegraph, Guardian (UK), and newspapers in Europe, Canada, Australia, etc.

It is ironic, too, that NRI’s (Non Resident Indians) get to see coverage in the foreign media, whereas there is a heavy blanket of suppression in India. It makes the notion of ‘Indian democracy’ an oxymoron, and somewhat hollow.

An alert media would challenge V.P.B. Nair with the question:   Have you – as you told the BBC you would do – pushed for a re-opening of the Puttaparthi police killings case?

It is of oddest irony that degrees of exposure of these crimes have been effectively left up to two individuals gifted with cussed unstoppableness – the late Basava Premanand in India and Robert Priddy in Norway. It is similarly significant that, so great is the unwillingness of most major Indian media to tackle Sathya Sai Baba and his incredibly wealthy and influential cult, that exposing him has been, with the exception of India Today, Tehelka, The Caravan, and (to a small extent) Hindustan Times, left up to the foreign media to do – e.g., BBC, CBC (Canada), DR (Denmark), SBS, ABC (Australia), Times of London, Daily Telegraph, Guardian (UK), Salon.com (USA), and newspapers in Europe, Canada, Australia, etc.

Again, there is irony in that NRI’s (Non Resident Indians) get to see coverage in the foreign media that is tightly suppressed in India!

The lengths to which Basava Premanand and Robert Priddy have gone to examine the welter of documentation have
required much sacrifice of time and energy.  Robert Priddy and I kept in touch with Premanand over the years, and this access allowed us confidential insight into the very real risks to life and limb that Premanand ran.  My own tribute to this remarkable man is here:  Basava Premanand. Vale. A fighter for truth who lived what others preach.

BBC Footage Still Potent In Exposing Sathya Sai Sect (See Video Clips and Secret Swami Documentary)

Posted by Barry Pittard on September 17, 2010

A potent factor in successive waves of people leaving Sathya Sai Baba has been video footage exposing the fraudulence that is Sathya Sai Baba. Especially for those pressed for time, here are some decisive clips from the BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’. Although the documentary was first aired in mid 2004, it has since been viewed in many countries worldwide.

”The Secret Swami’ has contributed to enormous damage done to the Sathya Sai Baba Organization, and the repute of its founder and those of his following who have – in some cases wittingly and in a great many cases all too unwittingly through being duped, covered up for him. The cover up has been mediated via successive state and central governments and police and judiciary in India, as well as by the actions of his hugely wealthy and powerful international Sathya Sai Organization.

Since 1999, former devotee coordinators have withstood untold threats and libel from this organization and its supporters, and do not intend to cave in. Speaking the truth – no matter the misunderstandings, distortions and often virtually daily attacks – is its own reward. It is a value Sathya Sai Baba and his devotees constantly harp upon. Living it is another matter.

Liberhan Commission Report, India: Names Some Long-time Close Associates of Sathya Sai Baba

Posted by Barry Pittard on November 25, 2009

NOTE:  Close on the heels of my last article – Commonwealth Games: ‘Shining India’s’ Mismanagement By Crisis. Sai Baba Not Sighted – there have been many readers for my 2009 article on India’s Liberhan Commission Report on the Ayodhya Mosque demolition. I shall post to my home page the earlier article:  Liberhan Commission Report, India: Names Some Long-time Close Associates of Sathya Sai Baba

Millions of foreign eyes are now trained on just a few of the many bizarre failures of India’s power elites. Trustfully, the more the world sees of what the Indian people have to endure at all times the more strength may come to those brave forces within her who struggle against the endemic corruption and inefficiency.

——————————————————————————

A media furore has erupted in India. It relates to the “leaked” details of the Judge Liberhan Commission report, a 17-year inquiry into the tumultuous 1992 Ayodhya Mosque demolition. How the issues did not set India physically ablaze may speak more of the ruthlessness of India’s security apparatus than to the temperateness of many of the country’s leaders and their hot-headed followers. However, the extremely long historic memories that are passed down the generations in non-western cultures may one day have to be reckoned with, and in terms of reaping bitter whirlwinds.

A number of the figures very seriously named are long-time close associates of Sathya Sai Baba and his core servitors.

The report names the former (BJP) Prime Minister Vajpayee (a strongly declared devotee), his Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani (not a devotee of Sathya Sai Baba) and former high-powered government BJP minister Murli Manohar Joshi as instrumental figures in orchestrating the demolition and hiding their roles in this extremely painful episode in modern Indian history. The disgraced former Home Minister, Ashok Singhal, like Vajpayee and Joshi, an old adherent of Sathya Sai Baba, is also named. Media links to this story abound – but here are a couple:

British Broadcasting Corporation NEWS REPORT, Tuesday, 24 November 2009

An official report in India has blamed leading Hindu nationalist politicians for playing a role in the 1992 demolition of a mosque in Ayodhya.

The report clearly implicates more than 60 people – including the most senior members of the main opposition party, the BJP – in the mosque’s destruction.

The mosque was brought down by a Hindu mob and some 2,000 people died in riots across India after its demolition.

BJP politicians have denied any wrongdoing in the incident.

In a joint public letter (December 2001), the (then) Chief Justice of India, P.N. Bhagwati along with the former Prime Minister of India of the right-wing BJP, A.B. Vajpayee, and another former Chief Justice of India, Ranganath Mishra, and three other prominent leaders wrote a public letter stating that contentions of Sai Baba’s dissenters represent a:

“wild, reckless and concocted allegations made by certain vested interests and people against Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba”.

But of course the chief players concerning us here are Vajpayee,  Advani, and Joshi, the first and the third closely linked with Sathya Sai Baba, as we have often enough referred to – See my:

Murli Manohar JoshiIn blustering, bullying style towards the interviewer, Tanya Datta, who asked perfectly reasonable questions, seen by millions in many countries around the world viewing BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’, (2004) Joshi aggressively defended Sathya Sai Baba. See:

Indian Minister Shields Sai Baba on BBC television

Posted by Barry Pittard on July 31, 2007ab-vajpayee-and-mm-joshi.jpgIn the BBC’s 2004 television documentary The Secret Swami, confronted by the BBC interviewer Tanya Datta, Murali Manohar Joshi (see photo, right), one of the most powerful ministers in the since-defeated A.B. Vajpayee (pictured to left) right-wing government, soon lost his temper, jabbing away with pointed finger at Ms Datta, manjoshiaccusing the BBC and people in England of plotting against Sai Baba, A.B. Vajpayee and P.N. Bhagawati  (sometimes Bhagwati), a key Sathya Sai Central Trust member and former Chief Justice of India). He arrogantly shouts at her,

“No, no, no… You don’t know the meaning of interviewing a minister in my capacity, as a minister of my stature.”

Allegations against Sathya Sai Baba are worldwide

Ms Datta’s vulnerability in the face of an arch bully was  touching to see, and she showed degree of courage, but tougher interviewers would not have put up with an evasiveness like Joshi’s. She did not need to defend the BBC and herself (although her reaction is understandable). She could, for example, have firmly stated the worldwide nature of the serious evidence from many former devotees around the world, whom the Sathya Sai Organization had not hitherto assailed as disreputable. At least, Murali Manohar Joshi’s arrogant evasion of the BBC’s totally fair question about Indian Government accountability was unmasked for the world to see. Joshi exposed himself. Viewers could only have felt for her, and seen Joshi for what he was. See Joshi’s extremely rude behavior towards Tanya Datta in video footage from the BBC’s The Secret Swami HERE

Shivraj Patil – Sai Baba worshipper – resigns

Posted by Robert Priddy on 30th November 2008

India’s Minister of Home Affairs, Shivraj Patil, who lost his seat at the last election, was nevertheless given the government post by Manmohan Singh. These two cronies are co-worshippers of Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi – and Sonia Gandhi protegees, the self-proclaimed God Incarnate, Deity of deities, The Father who Sent Jesus and virtually whatever else almighty or divine. At last, this worshipper and top home affairs protector of Sathya Sai Baba has met his Waterloo and had to resign! A further casualty is the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Vilasrao Deshmukh (see CNN report).

Senior Indian Policeman (Rtd) Speaks Out About Sathya Sai Baba Murders Cover Up

Posted by Barry Pittard on August 7, 2009

As the years have passed, the Government of India and the Government of Andhra Pradesh have not been able to silence all police personnel. One who has refused to shut up is a senior, retired policeman V. J. Ram, whose work as a detective won him a Presidential Medal. He has spoken out against the massive cover up of the police killings in Sathya Sai Baba’s private quarters, when Sathya Sai Baba and his brother (the late) Janaki Ramaiah (who was on the Sathya Sai Central Trust) had charge of events soon after the slayings occurred. Those who wish to know more about V.J. Ram’s work are welcome to contact me (my details are obtainable by clicking here – Barry Pittard.  Details are at the foot of the article. One would like to see the V.J. Ram book get a decent publisher, and, as has been the wish expressed by former Andhra Pradesh Home Secretary V.P.B. Nair to the BBC, to see the case revisited. See transcript of Nair’s statement to the BBC HERE. See my articles:

The BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ – A Revision

BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ and British Press Praise

It is to their historic shame that major newspaper proprietors co-operated in the news blanket that went into force. Many Indian journalists and editors, politicians from various parties, government officials and others know of the profound extent of the cover up by the then powerful Home Minister S.B. Chavan, a devotee of Sathya Sai Baba, who sped to Puttaparthi from New Delhi to set in motion the suppression of the facts. See

V.J. Ram writes: An account of the massive bribery involved reported by a former top CID sleuth, V. J. Ram, who received a Presidential Medal for his detective services to the Indian State.

Note:  Long before worldwide allegations of Sathya Sai Baba’s serial sexual abuse of boys and young men began to surface in earnest – circa AD 2000 – notable individuals shocked by signs of cover up – started to analyze situations, and leave the Sathya Sai Baba camp. For an example of early investigators, see the article by Warren C. Pyke LLN (Hons.) LLM (VUW), Barrister, New Zealand 3-3-1993: Sathya Sai Baba Murders Evidence (A New Zealand Barrister Analyses Police Evidence). Another earlier investigator of various serious allegations against Sathya Sai Baba was Terry Gallagher, an agricultural scientist and businessman who, in consequence of his findings, resigned as head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Australia. See:  Terry Gallagher’s Testimony

Robert Priddy on the Police Killings in Sai Baba’s Private Quarters

Former leader of the Norwegian Sathya Sai Organization and retired academic at the University of Oslo Robert Priddy has written extensively about the police killings in Sathya Sai Baba’s private chamber in April 1963. Indulal Shah and Indian Government Cover Up

Posted by Barry Pittard on October 27, 2008

Indulal Shah,

International Chairmanof Mumbai, India, was replaced by bbc-clip-dr-micael-goldstein-gets-angry.jpgDr Michael Goldstein, of Covina, California, as world convener of the Sathya Sai Organization. Shah more recently retired from his chairmanship of the Indian organization. There is a mass of documentation indicating that, following the police killings in Sai Baba’s bedroom June 6, 1993, he presided over a massive cover up to prevent police, media and judicial investigation in India. The Hindu, 10-6-1993 reported:

“When press persons met Mr. Indulal Shah, chief functionary of the Sri Sathya Sai World Trust, he said, ‘the matter is purely internal and we do not wish to have any law enforcement agency investigating into it.’”

Robert Priddy has just blogged, referring to Goldstein, quoting my questions addressed to him (Goldstein). See Challenge to the Sathya Sai Organization cannot be met Posted by robertpriddy on October 26, 2008

Key Issues Need To Be Addressed By Indian Members of Sathya Sai Oranization (and the Indian public)

Flag of that India whom Sathya Sai Baba has said will soon lead the world under his rule

But – apart from the social, political and justice avenues in India – the same questions need to be asked by Indian members of the Sathya Sai Organization! – quite apart from those in many countries, who have left it in a variety of states such as grief, anger, hurt, sense of betrayal and concern at the extent of the cover up by those in official capacities whom, over the years, they thought they could trust. They need to be courageous enough to overcome the barrier placed by the natural – and in many cases very worthy – respect for elders. Otherwise, all Sai Baba’s and his organization’s talk about being fearless is vain.

Although there are some encouraging signs of change, unfortunately, sex crime is even more of a tabooed topic in India than in the West, where there has been far more work done in addressing the issues. But there are other major issues that need to be dealt with as well, and, even though Shah is now retired, his legacy continues and no organization – especially a spiritual one – will win trust and respect when it is time and again, year after year,  exposed for extremely serious cover ups, and acts as a law unto itself.

BBC Interview with V.P.B. Nair – Former Home Secretary of Andhra Pradesh State

BBC’s Tanya Datta: Velayudhan Nair rejects the police version of events. He should know. Until two thousand and two he was Home Secretary of Andhra Pradesh and in charge of the state police. On coming to office he examined the files and found that the original police report was riddled with lies and inconsistencies. This was later exposed by a CID investigation.

VPB Nair: Two or three daggers cannot be a match to roaring guns. So this story of the police being attacked and the police shooting in self-defence is totally baseless.
Tanya Datta: So are you suggesting that the police executed the boys that night?
VPB Nair: In absolute… this is absolute cold-blooded murder.

V.P.B. Nair, formerly in charge of Andhra Pradesh State Police, who was interviewed by the BBC for ‘The Secret Swami’

Goldstein in Except from Transcript of the BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ (2004)

Tanya Datta: Why don’t you have thorough investigations, instead of just asking one question to one person?

Michael Goldstein: What do you mean by thorough investigation?

2’nd Interviewer: Objective investigators, not someone asking the perpetrator whether he, he carried out the act. But someone, you know, a proper legal process or a legalistic process should I say.
Tanya Datta: Yes.

Michael Goldstein: Because I don’t believe that’s appropriate with Sai Baba.

2’nd Interviewer: Why not?

Michael Goldstein: Because my heart and my conscience tell me that it’s not possible.

Note: So much for accountability of the top leader. What of the heart and conscience of anguished former devotees worldwide, many of whom gave decades of loving service to Sathya Sai Baba and from within his international organization?!

CNN-IBN Reports Action On Corrupt Indian Gurus

Posted by Barry Pittard on August 2, 2008

The influential media outlet CNN-IBN has just come out with a series of articles on the increasing exposure of ‘godmen’ in India.

What will not be so obvious is the courage of those in journalism, the judiciary, police forces and so on who are putting themselves in danger when they attempt to confront the forces of corruption.

The links to the CNN-IBN reports are immediately below, and beneath these are links (with quotes) to a number of articles in Call for Media and Government Investigation of Sathya Sai Baba. These span many months, and hold out the hope that the forces of anti-corruption and of those who uphold the justifiable Indian pride in her great and varied culture will be able to triumph.

Even as I write there are reports that India has the best human rights record in Asia. This will not have been achieved without the cost of tremendous courage and sacrifice – much of it never recordable.

With India on her way to becoming a superpower, a great contribution she can make – one that can indeed shame those countries which flaunt their democratic traditions – is to clean up her ‘house’ and set an example of flourishing democratic achievements. For decades, the profoundly failed guru, Sathya Sai Baba, has been saying that he will first clean up his ‘own backyard’. He has made all too little dent but India does not need him. She has, down millennia, furnished the worthy aims that he uncontroversially preaches. She has long abounded in great exemplars. It is goods delivery well in excess of all the preaching by her sometimes shady and failed gurus that is needed.

In her rich and marvelous multiculture, these qualities can be asserted by any irrespective of culture, class or creed .

Supercool Indian Gurus Under Fire

The following readings indicate two-way pulls occurring in India – towards gurus and the extraordinary power many of them have, down millennia, wielded, and away from them

V.P.B. Nair. B.Premanand. R.Priddy: Sai Baba Bedroom Killings

Many Indian journalists and editors and others know of the profound extent of the cover up by the then powerful Home Minister S.B. Chavan, and central, Andhra Pradesh State and local governments. It is a pity that very few have had the courage to speak out publicly on the issue, as has former Andhra Pradesh Home Secretary V.P.B. Nair, who was in office at the time of the killings. It is a sad commentary that very few had the courage in speaking out displayed by those such as Nair and B. Premanand. See the BBC Film Clip of V.P.B. Nair making his statement

The Guru Trap. Will India Be Forever Trapped?

Tehelka is regarded by many observers as one of few newspapers in India which can show some investigate clout and courage. It has sustained tremendous pressure by Indian governments and other power brokerage forces in India. Below is an excerpt from Tehelka, which points the need for India to come clean and act decisively about her frequent cultivation and protection of nefarious gurus. Sathya Sai Baba gets a reference.

Is Sai Baba’s Governmental Influence ‘Miraculous’?

Yesterday’s blog, HERE, noted the Indian magazine Business Standard news current report that the Sathya Sai Central Trust is putting Sai Baba’s Puttaparthi airport up for sale. It was revealing to find an old 1998 Indian Express report that saw corrupt links between Sai Baba’s chief representatives and a then Civil Aviation boss. Most Indian publications have long suffered their publisher’s censorship against reports adverse to Sathya Sai Baba. As the Editor of one of India’s leading newspapers told me: Sai Baba is too powerful, with so many devotees all over India. Likely to have been all too little noticed, then, was a report filed in the Indian Express in February 1998 by reporter Swati Chaturvedi. It points to corrupt origins in the sanctioning of the Sathya Sai airport. What the Swati Chaturvedi article does not mention is that the then Civil Aviation Secretary, M.K. Kaw, is a Sathya Sai Baba devotee.

Is Indian ‘Godman’ Sai Baba’s Moon Waning Still Further?

The report below, I have excerpted from the DNAINDIA news service. It indicates that Sathya Sai Baba’s chief translator and personal India and international emissary, Professor Anil Kumar, has acknowledged the extraordinary traffic and crowd snarls occasioned by Sai Baba’s trip to his private airport at Puttaparthi.

It is reported that India’s most famous and controversial guru was at the airport in his car on the evening of Thursday October 4, 2007, which got badly detained by unruly crowds. He would be present, it was believed, to preside over a profound mass vision that he, as God, would perform. An Indo Asian News Service (IANS) staff writer reported …

For the first time, a serving cabinet minister (Shibu Soren), was given life imprisonment for murder. Under a fortnight later, a cricket star and MP (Navjot Singh Sidhu) was jailed for manslaughter. Majumder reports “A recent study suggests that nearly a quarter of the country’s MPs are facing criminal charges ranging from murder to extortion and even rape”, and that “India’s courts are estimated to have a backlog of some two million cases”. India A Mature Democracy? BBC Probes

Would many Indian politicians, notorious for their extreme corruption, dare expose the foreign goose that lays the (cosmic!) golden egg? Driving this question would have reinforced the producer Eamon Hardy’s original query about whether India is a mature democracy.

Who In India Will Stand out Against Abuses?

According to reports by Sanjoy Majumdar, BBC New Delhi and Tim Sullivan of Associated Press, there have been some recent populist stirrings in India against corruption and its cover-up.  Not that there have not long been those Indians who have stood up valiantly against these. One may hope that the groundswell will come to include corrupt gurus

‘God’s’ Ex-Shah, Indulal Shah

Posted by Barry Pittard on July 30, 2008

Indulal Shah, of Mumbai, India, was the world head of the Sathya Sai Organization, and, previously, for decades, the head of the Indian wing of that organization.

In June 1993, at the time of the Puttaparthi police killings in Sathya Sai Baba’s bedroom, Indulal Shah rose to his height in adroit and politically powerful suppressive actions that would rate a place in a primer for feudal but effective crisis management.

The Hindu, June 10, 1993, reported:

“When press persons met Mr. Indulal Shah, chief functionary of the Sri Sathya Sai World Trust, he said, ‘the matter is purely internal and we do not wish to have any law enforcement agency investigating into it.’”

The then Indian Prime Minister Narasimha Rao and his Home Minister S.B. Chavan and other powerful forces in Indian politics supported and greatly extended upon Puttaparthi’s extensive cover up. Chavan was in Puttaparthi assisting in the damage control. So powerful is Sathya Sai Baba in India right across the political spectrum that Indian governments, irrespective of hue, have ever since maintained an iron-clad damper on the issue, and prevented police, media and judicial investigation. The voices of journalists, such as members of the Anantapur Journalist’s Union in Sathya Sai Baba’s State of Andhra Pradesh, were suppressed.

Andhra Pradesh former Home Secretary, V.P.B. Nair, has described the killings in the BBC’s television documentary The Secret Swami as “absolute cold blooded murder”. View and hear Nair speaking to interviewer Tanya Datta, in this film clip HERE. These intruders could easily have been captured without murdering them. Sai Baba was nearby as events unfolded, hour by hour, and yet – a virtual ‘omnipotent’ dictator within his independent ashram township, at least – did not lift a finger to stop the deaths.
