Sathya Sai Baba’s ‘Minister of Propaganda’ – Dr G. Venkataraman

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 28, 2007

More detailed information to that below is found in the article ‘The Sathya Sai Organization’s Deception and Propaganda Exposed’. This four-part piece was co-authored by Robert Priddy and Barry Pittard. It responds to points Dr G. Venkataraman has unconscienably raised – despite his knowledge of the excellent character of so many who have, as a matter of moral principal, left the Sai Baba fold. He has demeaned the excellent professionalism of the British Broadcasting Corporation, who were exceptionally exacting in the amount of hard evidence they sought from globally networked Sathya Sai Baba devotees, some of whom had been outstanding leaders for decades (See too: Sathya Sai Baba’s Chief Broadcaster Dr G. Venkataraman: Select Critical Articles by Barry Pittard and Dr G. Venkataraman, Sathya Sai Baba’s Nuclear Boon Companion.

G. Venkataraman, Sai Baba, K. Chakravarthi

Dr G. Venkataraman, formerly an intimate member of India’s nuclear bomb community, was Vice-Chancellor of Sai Baba’s university at Puttaparthi. He is now second-in-charge of the international Sathya Sai Organization, and head of Sai Global Harmony. The latter entity broadcasts, in affiliation with WorldSpace International Satellite Radio Service, 24/7 to many countries. With a behind-the-scenes corporate-style, assisted by portions of the billions of funds that pour from many countries into the Sathya Sai Central Trust, the declared aim is to penetrate to every corner of the globe. A vital question will be whether politicians in democratic countries will be capable of distinguishing between the issue of freedom of religion and the issue of cults that decidedly do not, whatever may be their rhetoric, respect democracy.

Dr Venkataraman is tantamount to being Sathya Sai Baba’s ‘minister of propaganda’. Practically all heads of the Sathya Sai Organization are forbidden to comment on critical matters, but G. Venkataraman is an exception. The few spokesmen (and the extreme male domination is palpable) say very little, as one would expect of a virtually Soviet-style, cultic organization. In some ways – otherwise the public reputability worldwide of the Sathya Sai Organisation would soon be in tatters. But a fact that no Sai devotee can deny is that Sathya Sai Baba and deputy chairman Venkararaman have both wax lyrical about how the former dictator of Uganda Idi Amin wept with tears of devotion over Sai Baba. I invited those of my readers who are very concerned about the cultic adherence of relatives and friends to Sathya Sai Baba to send to, or print off for, them the following irrefutable documentation:

Idi Amin Video Clip. Amin Claimed Direct Line To God and Sathya Sai Baba and Dr G.Venkataraman: Will They Disavow Their Idi Amin Fondness? and Sathya Sai Baba, dictator Idi Amin and G. Venkataraman and Sathya Sai Baba’s Deputy Head, Dr G. Venkataraman, Speaks of “Mr Idi Amin” and The Last King of Scotland – GOD’S ORDERS and Sai Baba

Until recently, even Venkataraman was subdued. However, a civil lawsuit against the directors of the Sathya Sai Society of America law went badly wrong for the litigant, Alaya Rahm of southern California, the son of Al Rahm who was for many years one of the highest profile Sathya Sai Organization leaders in the world. The young man, Alaya, was advised by his attorney, William Brelsford, to self-dismiss his case. This resulted in terms so absurdly unfavourable to Rahm that some of (including top lawyers from the US, UK, and Australia) have been aghast. One wonders whether his pro bono lawyer William Brelsford can even look himself in the mirror of a morning. His discovery process was faulty, and the high-flying lawyers for Dr Michael Golstein, head of the world Sathya Sai Organization ran rings round the tactically slow-moving Brelsford.

Had the Rahm family not suffered enough – having already courageously and tirelessly lent themselves to former devotee efforts with Denmark’s national broadcaster DR, BBC television, FBI and State Department, UNESCO, etc., – I, for one, favoured initiating a complaints process about William Brelsford to the California Bar Society, but could then, after searching phone conversation with the father, Al Rahm, sense how fragile hurt the Rahm family were feeling, and so backed off. From first hand, I knew well that the Rahm family, out of deep respect for my close and widely respected, much-loved associate (the late) Glen Meloy. It was not as if the Rahm had not already done, and suffered. (For Glen Meloy, see my obiturary: Glen Meloy (“Standing up for truth and goodness”) – In Memoriam

Venkataraman seemed rapturous. Alaya Rahm is one of many throughout the world who accuse Sathya Sai Baba of sexually molesting them while in their teens, not to mention young men just out of their teens. One of the saddening types of report that come to us is of men advanced in age, who have for many years remained quiet about Sathya Sai Baba’s sexual abuse of them when the men were very young, and visited Sai Baba decades ago. Al Rahm has told us how an important factor in the Al Rahm being able to accept his son’s accounts of abuse was that Sathya Sai Baba had sexually abused Al many years before, and Al, like so many others, had seen the abuse not as abuse but as a form of mystic, divine blessing by his all-knowing, all-seeing guru. For another example of belated debriefing see the case of Mark Roche. Here is the BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ segment where Tanya Datta interviews Mark Roche, in his 60’s and now a psychotherapist in the USA:

10.24.10 Aston Santa Monica, California

10.24.16 Music

10.24.28 Tanya Datta: Mark Roche devoted twenty-five years of his life to Sai Baba. He first heard of him in nineteen sixty-nine and soon joined the local centre in California. The guru’s message was the big attraction.

10.24.40 Music

10.24.44 Aston MARK ROCHE: The teachings themselves were very universal and adopted the attitude of embracing all other religions so that it wasn’t a matter of this religion opposed to that, that you had to leave whatever you were in to be associated with Sai Baba, it was something that just be a better Christian or a better Jew or a better whatever it is rather than necessarily having to leave it mixed with the fact that the person who is the head of that is claiming to be God himself.

10.25.12 Music

10.25.15 Tanya Datta: It’s the special moment when God calls. And Mark couldn’t believe his luck when he was summoned for a private interview. But he emerged shocked and confused. Just like the Rahms, Sai Baba had oiled his genitals. Two years later Mark was called for an audience again.

10.25.37 Mark Roche: He kept saying stuff like that I’m giving you a great chance, millions want to touch the feet, you know, I’m giving you whole body, this is great chance, this is great chance. Then he went over to a different of the building and pulled up his dhoti, which is Indian garment kind of thing and exposed himself and sort of indicated that I was supposed to put his penis in my mouth, which, feeling intimidated and confused and all that, I did. And although it didn’t seem right to me but it just seemed like what I was supposed to do.

10.26.12 Music

10.26.15 Tanya Datta: Why would God want to put his penis in your mouth?

10.26.20 Mark Roche: Got me.

10.26.21 Music

10.26.24 Tanya Datta: One of the things that a lot of the abuse victims we’ve talked to have said, is that Sai Baba does these genital oilings because it’s part of Hinduism. Have you ever heard anything like that?

10.26.35 Aston KHUSHWANT SINGH Writer: I, I, I, for one, it’s nothing to do with, there’s no Indian tradition to support the fact that, you know, worship of the Lingam includes also doing the blow job, if that is what you are referring to. I don’t think there’s any basis for that whatsoever.

In the view of our lawyers looking at the case, his legal representation was in some respects seriously deficient. Did Venkataraman think it a matter full of merriment for a young man to tangle with attorneys hired by those backed by great wealth? There is not a moment in his long piece (what piece of his is not long, and long-winded?) where Venkataraman shows the slightest compassion. For him a fallen dissenter is a figure for derision and crowing over, and the response of many Sai Baba supporters was the same. How very spiritual of them all! It was simply too much for Venkataraman to miss the opportunity to triumph in front of a wide public – something he could not have done without Sathya Sai Baba’s explicit permission. See:

Sathya Sai Baba – A Fake Avatar’s Fake Materializations

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 27, 2007

Increasingly, the Sathya Sai Organization leaders struggle to promote their guru. Their impossible task is to keep from the public – or, at desperate best, from their own members – the embarrassing history of his demonstrably untrue statements. For example, he has said that no one is required to promote himself or his work. On his forty-third birthday he proclaimed, “Avatars need no advertisement.

In their recruiting efforts, Sai Baba’s officials show costly Sai Baba propaganda films. No doubt they wish to attract a high-paying class of new clientele. The billions (this is no exaggeration) that are sent from around the world to the Sathya Sai Central Trust in India need to be kept flowing!  They hire very expensive venues such as the Copley International Conference Center, a Hilton Ballroom, the Cooper Union, La Mirada Theatre, Sydney Superdome, Melbourne Town Hall, etc …., mounting tightly-controlled presentations, as would befit any cult. They withhold from the public the fact that they regard Sathya Sai Baba as God fully incarnate – the ‘Avatar’ of all the ages, as he claims, who has come to save the entire world before his self-prophesied death in AD 2022.

Nor do the leaders of the Sathya Sai Organization reveal that some of his flashy ‘miracles’ have been exposed as fakes – Click here to see BBC video footage

Neither do they acknowledge that some of his supposedly miraculously manifested jewellery have been assayed and shown to be clever fakes.  See HERE
a-typical-sai-baba-fake-materialized-ring.jpg

Former head of the Norwegian Sathya Sai Baba Organization Robert Priddy writes:

On 31/10/2002, my wife Reidun and I returned from three days in Copenhagen, Denmark, where the ‘green diamond’ Sathya Sai Baba gave me in 1986 (shown above) was examined by Mr. Peter Hertz, the Danish Queen Margarethe’s jeweller, a top Scandinavian expert on precious stones and diamonds. All was filmed in detail by Øjvind Kyrø’s team for Danish TV. The result of the investigation, which took two days, is that the stone is a synthetic green sapphire.Value only about $40 today in super-expensive Denmark. Its value in India today could therefore probably be around $10.

Characteristically, Sai Baba’s devotees scorn the slightest testimony delivered against him. They shun and defame those who have spoken out who for years they have known to be truthful and caring individuals, some of whom were high-ranking leaders in the Sathya Sai Organization. An honest thing to do would be to have their own supposedly Sai Baba materialized rings and pendants assayed by a third party expert. If they are not prepared to submit to this form of testing, then by what right do they disparage and ridicule those who have done so?

Except in the case of those productions which have – shrewdly – been given as genuinely costly gifts by Sai Baba (although still ‘manifested’ by sleight-of-hand), the recipients would be bound to be shocked at the all too objective result. But then real truth (Sanskrit, ‘sathya’) requires a conscience brighter than any diamond, real or fake, and a courage that does not fall into bits of tinsel and trash when opened up.

A Top Indian Editor Vir Sanghvi Fails Research Test

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 25, 2007

Recently, one of India’s top editors, Vir Sanghvi of the Hindustan Times, has written against Sathya Sai Baba:
http://147.208.132.198/news/181_1852850,00300001.htm

Vir Sanghvi’s article lacks argument

Now that foreign newspapers have run researched articles on Sai Baba, it will get easier for superficial writers in India to come out of their foxholes, after long years of hiding in them, and poke glib tongues out at India’s flailing top guru, who has recently come under siege in India for dangerously irresponsible political comments of a sort that he has long avoided making.

Unlike the BBC, Times of London, Telegraph, Guardian and other leading media in the world who have investigated the claims of networked former devotees and our compelling documentation, Vir Sanghvi has failed to consult with those best  able to evidence the sheer extent of the allegations against Sai Baba. For reasons of security and because of the painful sensitivity for many witnesses, a great bulk of these cannot be accessed to the public – e.g., via the Internet. With the occasional honorable exception like India Today and to some degree Khushwant Singh, the Indian media has been notoriously silent about any news adverse to Sai Baba or his Sathya Sai Baba Organization.

Is Vir Sanghvi simply posturing?

Does he want to be first at the scene of Sai Baba’s considerable demise? Is it that he realizes that each successive wave of critical press from outside India given to Sai Baba, increasingly lands heavy blows to that guru’s power and influence? Certainly, it has great potential to embarrass India before the world as not having resolved crucial  elements in its growth towards being a more mature democracy, and to reveal the almost unimaginable rampancy of superstition and guru-grovelling among its power echelons.

Over time, news about Sai Baba that is suppressed in India but breaking elsewhere in leading foreign newspapers will get back to India, especially given the huge Indian diaspora. From both devotee and former devotee complaints, it appears that Vir Sanghvi refuses to listen to the representations of either side. He blithely writes and runs, it would appear.  He weighed in with a largely subjective piece, intellectually very slack. Does that not harm serious readers’ chances for understanding a topic so sensitive and serious? At least in this regard Sai Baba’s former world head, Indulal Shah, and present deputy world head and director of Sai Global Harmony Sai Baba’s far-penetrating, global radio venture, Dr G. Venkataraman, are in a way right – but not in the way they so wildly and sweepingly generalize. Yes, media sensationalism does exist. We all know that. Sanghvi has failed the research and analysis test badly.

Vir Sanghvi and Indian media colleagues need to research

Why do not Sanghvi and other Indian editors write something rigorously researched on Sai Baba and any of the myriad of allegations facing him? That is to say like Paul Lewis in The Guardian or Dominic Kennedy and his team at The Times of London or Mick Brown in the The Daily Telegraph or Michelle Goldberg for Salon.com, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation or The West Australian (whose excellently conducted research by Torrance Mendez was pulled at the last moment), and other top journalists in several countries for whom we have been glad to provide access to witnesses, including many primary ones. To be sure, in major world media, no matter what its strengths in ethical and other standards, there are often limitations of real comprehension of the breadth, depth and subtlety of issues, and errors proliferate that there is no time or further occasion to correct. We all have to live with that melacholy fact. The BBC researched intensively for over seven months and others for periods varying from months to weeks. Our work in assisting them was – frequently daily – very demanding, so we can attest that their inputs were, too. We have globally coordinated for well-reputed media, serious academic and other investigators to:

  • Many males (ranging from young, including ex-students from Sathya Sai education institutions to those in the last part of their lives such as Mark Roche who have at last spoken up, who appeared in the BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’)  from various countries who allege being sexually abused when they were boys or young men, and in some cases their families. Note: We learnt that ‘The Secret Swami’ investigators found still further cases that were not in our (already considerable!) documentation, although of course, and very rightly, the names were not revealed to us.
  • Very qualified sexual abuse professionals familiar with the personal cases
  • Former Sathya Sai Organization leaders – once in excellent standing in the Sathya Sai Organization – and ALWAYS in their wider communities and professions – who investigated and resigned as a matter of ethical principle
  • Spokespersons from various third party religious and non-religious organizations which can confirm that responsible individuals and families have come to them with accounts of sexual abuse of young males by Sai Baba, and the massive cover-up by his key leaders

On the other hand, Sathya Sai Organization leaders like Indulal Shah (Mumbai), Dr Michael Goldstein (California, USA), Dr G. Venkataraman (Puttaparthi, India), J. Jagadeesan (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) etc., attempt to pass these highly reputed media off as being ‘sensationalist’. More widely, whatever former devotees or other critics who attempt to bring the allegations to light are assailed and defamed on the Internet and elsewhere – sometimes actionably, according to our lawyers in a number of countries. Is there a shred of evidence that the Sathya Sai Organization has made any attempt to advise its devotees against associating themselves from these shameful attacks on the Internet? But how could this be done without grand hypocrisy? Some of the attacks on the known integrity of former devotees, in particular, have come from Dr G. Venkataraman, deputy world chairman of the Sathya Sai Organization, and other key leaders such as Ashok Bhagani, Thorbjorn Meyer, Steen Piculell, J. Jagadeesan T. Sri Ramanathan, Leonard Gutter, and others. So much for all their talk about truth, love and compassion! History will not do other than judge them harshly indeed. All except an extreme smallest few former devotees have refused to respond to the incredible nastiness. Sai Baba and the core leaders of his organization, as is typical of cultic behaviour, are monoliths hiding from the rest of the world. He is indeed, as the BBC have termed him, ‘the secret swami’.

The resigned ex-leaders and others who have attempted to get Sathya Sai Organization to be accountable and to show duty-of-care have been, one after the other, demonized, from Sai Baba right down the chain. This reveals the extraordinary cultic grip he exercises, and shows the acute need in all our education systems to effectively teach bold critical thinking.

Cults Erode Values of Freedom and Tolerance

Does human society really need to wait – before making impartial investigations – for repeated disasters due to cultic following of charismatic leaders, especially those who operate on such as vast international scale as Sai Baba, arguably Indian history’s most powerful and influential guru? In the whole matter of cults, is it not better to investigate the danger signals and widespread allegations, and bring accountability and rescue where they are so sorely needed? The cardinal values of freedom of opinion and cultural tolerance are too readily used by authorities as a pretext for not addressing the problems of cultism. But these powerful cults themselves undermine those very values.

Sai Baba Got Oral Sex – US TV Story

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 23, 2007

quotes below from Robert Priddy’s just released article, “Ullrich Zimmermann’s Three Interviews On Sathya Sai Baba”
http://home.chello.no/~reirob/Z/
saibabasexual.htm#dual

Until he retired, Robert Priddy researched and taught philosophy and sociology at the University of Oslo 1968-85. Born in the U.K. 1936, he was Founder member- Coordinator of the Oslo Sai Baba group and Centre. He was National leader, 1986-2000. Having served the Sathya Sai Organization, 1983-2001, he resigned after being convinced – as were many others – of the Puttaparthi Ashram’s, local, state and central Indian Governments’ cover-up of police killings in Sai Baba’s bedroom on June 6, 1993 and his first-hand investigation of sexual allegations against Sai Baba. He is author of Source of the Dream – My Way to Sathya Sai Baba. 1994,1998 and 2000 and End of the Dream – The Fall of Sathya Sai Baba. 2004

His Sai Baba related Homepage is at:
http://home.no.net/anir/Sai/

He has one on an array of topics at:
http://home.no.net/rrpriddy/Nos/index.html

“One brilliant exponent of how tremendously people’s minds – perceptions and thoughts – can be manipulated by non-mysterious means (very often explained by him in detail) is the rising TV star, the Englishman Derren Brown, many of whose ‘psychic’ feats are very like those for which Sai Baba and many others are known. Derren Brown convinces his subjects that he knows their minds, what they have in their pockets and can induce states of mind – including total immediate forgetfulness – in them with the greatest of ease and no preliminary ‘hypnosis’ which ar most impressive to observe. However, he explains how all he does is achieved without any ‘psychic powers'”.

“One fact that does not come out in the interviews is that Ullrich had his first interviews at the age of 21, last interview in 23. He says he was only 14 years at the time of his first ‘contact’ with Sathya Sai Baba – via his devotee mother. He is now nearly 40 years old. It is significant that he came under the influence of Sai Baba’s ideas at a tender age. That it took 18 years for Ullrich to bring out the public presentation of the facts about Sai Baba’s sexual acts is not surprising. The same applied to Mark Roche, who testified to oral sexual abuse by Sai Baba on the BBC documentary ‘The Secret Swami’ two decades after the event. It is not unusual in all kinds of cases of sexual abuse for such a long delay in speaking out, as is well known and widely documented by abuse counsellors and psychologists”.

For a highly useful summary of the Zimmermann interviews, along with some important added links, see Robert Priddy’s page:
http://home.chello.no/~reirob/Z/index.htm

“Many people who are in desperate conditions because the experience wore down and the spirituality disappeared. It happens with the Moonies, the born-again Christians, the Mormons, the 7th Day Adventists and almost every charismatic sect or cult in existence… and also in other kinds of organisation too, from the sublime to the ridiculous”.

“(I was asked) to my utter surprise by V.K. Narasimhan what I thought of Joga Rao… that he did not believe in any of Sai’s miracles. I was astonished. The closest servitor of all for decades! Narasimhan said all Indian residents knew this and it was often discussed, but Joga Rao wanted to serve Sai Baba because of his educational and social work for Indians. I later found evidence of Joga Rao’s scepticism when a Norwegian friend of mine worked with Joga Rao to design a new waste disposal unit for Prashanthi. My friend suggested that Swami should decide on the issues, Joga Rao said ‘What does HE know about it?'”

“Some revealing details were recently learned from Indian ex-students who contacted the expose in strict confidence, especially from one former ‘form boy’ (ed. i.e., a sexual favourite) whose brother was still recently a Sai Baba ‘chic’ (i.e. permanent bedroom fixture). Sai Baba has a machine for making vibuti pellets with vibuthi and water (which pellets he conceals in many places and about his person, which are handed to him by his letter-bearing servitors etc. – as now seen on videos). Pellets are placed, for example, on top of the electrical switch box on the left inside the door where he always goes to turn on the room lights after entering the room – then he invariably ‘materialises’ vibuti for the ladies! Further, in the private inner room he has had concealed a sponge in a small tray of fragrant oil, sometimes under a chair or elsewhere. Such a simple trick – he only has to squeeze it once before the young man enters, or when the worshipful fellow is inattentive! None of his critics had imagined this obvious explanation despite years of investigating and pondering”.

In this article, Robert Priddy Discusses the Topics:

  • The ‘spiritual honeymoon’ period
  • The unavoidable need to explain Sai Baba’s sexual approaches
  • Is reduced sex interest caused by Sai Baba’s ‘genital oiling’ and sexual contacts?
  • The question of ‘spiritual energies’ white or black
  • ‘Tantric sex’ practices?
  • Sai Baba’s dual sexuality?
  • Indoctrination, self-programming and ‘projection’ Sai Baba’s ability to influence his devotees’ perceptions
  • Effects of deep yearning, concentration, deprivations, sleep paralysis, drugs etc.
  • The ‘well-prepared’ interview rooms
    Oiling with psychoactive substances?
  • Sai Baba’s intuition and knowingness
  • Why such great secrecy if not to cover-up deception?
  • Sai Baba’s frequent lies and fraudulence

Ashok Bhagani – Footsying With Top Blair Minister?

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 22, 2007

Ashok Bhagani. Part 5.

Would Ashok Bhagani Flee Hard Media Questions?

At a cost of much sacrifice, Sai Baba’s former devotees have shared with major world media, governments, police and so on their allegations of the guru’s rampant misconduct. This includes serial sexual abuse, implication in police killings in his bedroom, wastage of billions, including vast donations from many foreign countries on flashy buildings and water projects that fail, and much else. These individuals have been subject to serious pro Sai Baba harrassments in their university, professional and personal lives? Does Ashok Bhagani, head of the Sathya Sai Organization in the UK think that the slander on the Internet – some of it carried out with the acquiescence of very senior heads of the Sathya Sai Organization – is fortunate? Perhaps he would like to know how it feels to be deeply probed. The British media might assist him. They may like to ask:

  • Does he have firm association with one of British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s most powerful Ministers – Tony McNulty, MP for East Harrow, and Minister of State for Policing, Security and Community Safety?
  • Are Bhagani and Tony McNulty MP working to achieve a Sathya Sai Baba Radio broadcasting service that will transmit to the British Isles and beyond?
  • What can he tell the public of his/his organization’s links with Dr. Noah Samara, CEO, WorldSpace Corporation, and Dr. Michael Nobel, Chairman, Member of the Board of Directors of WorldSpace, and Sai Baba’s known – and already strongly-unfolding – agenda to to ensure that broadcasts of him and his key devotees reach  every corner of the globe?
  • Does he monetarily and with other favours fortify Tony McNulty’s private office in the House of Commons?
  • Does Tony McNulty employ Bhagani’s daughter?
  • Has he been given improper access to British government correspondance – intended to be Strictly Confidential! – received from former Sai devotees?
  • Did he learn from the Minister of Policing, or any other well-placed source, that Prime Minister Blair ordered the Metropolitan Police (in Februrary 2002) to stop its investigations of matters relating to Sathya Sai Baba?
  • Was Bhagani involved in moves that resulted in the silencing by the parliamentary Whips of both sides of the House of Commons of the almost fifty British parliamentarians who signed a petition calling for official investigation into Sathya Sai Baba, gagging them? – specifically at a time of sensitive years’ long negotiations for the sale, by British Aeronautical Systems to (Sai Baba devotee) Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government of a 1 billion sale of Hawk jet fighters to India?  http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2012743.stm
  • Does Bhagani pursue in high places of influence the notion that criticism of Sai Baba is adverse to India herself?
  • Has he been involved in moves to ensure that key executives of Labor Friends of India, the Conservative Parliamentary Friends of India, and the Indo-British Parliamentary Group block any moves against Sai Baba or his organization, given the argument that many major political and trade interests in India will be upset otherwise?
  • Has he sighted in part or in whole, or been informed about, a highly secret British government paper that is adverse to Sathya Sai Baba?
  • Where do the huge donations that Bhagani personally administers end up once they have got to the Sathya Sai Central Trust in India? Does he really know, and if not why would be encourage the passage of truly vast sums of money out of the UK?
  • Apart from those social welfare projects about which we may all feel good, is there a vast residual? Where would that go? In vastly failed water projects? In lavish accommodations and other highly ostentatious buildings? Into funding certain of Sai Baba’s business devotees? Into extremely costly promotions of an organization whose founder has long and often said needs no promotion? See Sai Baba’s statement “Avatars need no advertisement”:
    http://tinyurl.com/2ny3z9
  •  The Media can ask Bhagani about testimony which can be supplied to bona fide investigators by an impeccable source. This is a British citizen distinguished for integrity and intellectual accumen in high reaches of Government service, who informs that he quotes verbatim from Ashok Bhagani. Concerned that an old, confused, sick close relative’s wealth was unjustly being garnered by the UK Sathya Sai Organization, the citizen spoke with Bhagani by phone who, it is testified, replied:

“There is no corruption in India. Our policy as trustees is to take the lot and it is none of your business where the money goes.”

Exposing Corruption Is No Easy Road

Former devotees have spent enormous time and energy, year after year, in testifying and documenting to outstanding broadcasters like the BBC, CBC, ABC, SBS, DR, and newspapers such as India Today, Tehelka, Times of London, Telegraph, Guardian, Salon.com, BT, Bild, Focus, Trouw, Speegelbield, Noordhollands Dagblad, Sokaren, Gatopardo, Ottawa Citizen, Toronto Star, Vancouver Sun, Age, Australian Financial Review, West Australian, Adelaide Advertiser, to some of the world’s top universities, and to civic and religious institutions with whom the Sathya Sai Organization attempts to link with, etc., while not being frank about its real agendas. Journalists from different parts of the world have informed – and occasionally let slip by those such as Dr G. Venkataraman, Sai Baba’s chief propagandist – of high-level attempts by the Sai Organization to stop broadcasters and newspapers from investigating Sai Baba.

But Ashok Bhagani would have it that former Sai Baba devotee dissenters are but “two or three” who every now and again “will make these wild accusations”.

Ashok Bhagani and The Secret Swami

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 22, 2007

Ashok Bhagani. Part 4.

In a BBC Radio 4 interview held in November 2000, Ashok Bhagani confirmed that allegations that Sai Baba serially sexually molests boys and young men have been around for years. He stated:

“I welcome anyone to contact me if they’ve got a serious allegation, and errr … We will talk to them.”

Why might it be that former devotees do not trust Ashok Bhagani?

In his interview, he says:

“What actual evidence does the BBC have to substantiate these claims? These allegations have been circulating for years and have never been proved. As far as I’m concerned, there are 30 million happy devotees in the world, but every so often you will get two or three who will make these wild allegations.”

Millions of Devotees Can’t Be Wrong

But what if the facts are hidden by ‘the secret swami’ (to use the BBC’s epithet applied to Sai Baba) from almost all of those happy ’30 million happy devotees’? Great dictators like Hitler and Stalin were cheered by millions of ecstatically happy followers – so can so many individuals be wrong? Can we trust mass opinion? Can we trust Ashok Bhagani? Or trust Dr K.J.S ‘Sunny’ Anand who, as we saw yesterday, has publicly and joyfully proclaimed that Sai Baba has 100 million devotees world wide? (Dr ‘Sunny’ Anand is a U.S. Presidential medical advisor, and Professor of Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Neurobiology at the University of Arkansas For Medical Sciences, a U.S. Presidential medical advisor). Dr. Anand’s claims, including that Sai Baba is God fully manifest, are found at an official Sai Baba website: http://www.srisathyasaipublications.org/anand.htm

The Asian Voice journalist, Payal Nair, reports, June 25, 2004:

“Ashok Bhagani also states that when devotees are selected by Sai Baba for a private interview, there is always someone else present in the room, and this is especially the case when women and children meet him” http://tinyurl.com/34cx5g

Can Even Sai Devotees Trust Ashok Bhagani?

Well, thousands – if not alas quite millions! – of Sai devotees who have gone for interview with Sai Baba know that this assertion is absolutely untrue.

For years, Bhagani, like Sai Baba’s leaders, except those who have resigned in profound alienation and disgust, has abjectly failed to heed the acute concerns of former devotees once so long well loved and respected in his organization. We can easily see that Bhagani – though apparently a devotee for some four decades – has known of allegations of sexual molestation by Sai Baba for at least three years up to the date of his last media interviews. Having expressed willingness to talk to those making allegations of sexual molestation by Sai Baba, why then does Bhagani claim that their accounts are “factless and baseless”? Has he produced even a scrap of evidence that proves Sai Baba’s innocence before – surely hypocritically – demanding of BBC producers to produce their own?

Closely networked former devotees throughout the world, and for several years, do not know of a single instance where the Sathya Sai Organisation – extremely controlled from the top as it is – has shown duty-of-care to those families and individuals hitherto in good standing with it who have gone to the leaders with their painful accounts of sexual and other abuses by Sai Baba and in some cases those close to him.

Chartered Accountant Fails Transparency and Accountability Test

Ashok Bhagani lives in the UK, where marked institutional and corporate changes have occurred in regard to transparency and accountability. Here, proper mechanisms obtain for competent and just investigation of complaints of human rights and other abuses. Because of its cultic and suppressive nature, the multi-billions’- wealthy and powerful Sathya Sai Organization has brought upon itself the troubles it now suffers from exposure to millions of television viewers and newspaper and magazine readers, via the Internet, and determined former devotees exposing the cult in to their own government, religious and civic institutions..

Ashok Bhagani and his organization have worse solidified a culture of soviet-style culture of suppression and cover-up. Equally, he and his peers slander and vilify the large number of people who, prompted by acute moral and ethical concerns, have left it, and those who have tried – against formidable odds – to expose the facts.

Cultic Reaction or Principled Proaction?

Perhaps we can trust our financial matters with Bhagani as a leading British chartered accountant. But surely not with a duty-of-care to regarding our children. Paul Lewis wrote an article in The Guardian, Saturday November 4, 2006 – ‘The indian living god, the paedophilia claims and the Duke of Edinburgh awards:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/india/story/0,,1939405,00.html

It raised concerns about the nexus between the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, the UK Sai youth, on their way in large numbers to see Sai Baba. Once it realized questions were being asked in by very senior persons, including a former Home Minister, Tom Sackville, the Awards required of Dr. G. Venkataraman to take down from the official website the triumphing information that the Awards had been awarded to Sai Baba himself. But Bhagani fell silent amid the furore. Do, not however, the parents of the youth have a right to know the seriousness of the sexual abuse allegations, and the fact, well known to the top leaders of the Sathya Sai Organization that they are made by families and individuals whose word has not been hitherto doubted?

Obvious in his interviews are his incredible superficiality, insensitivity to the anguish of those making the primary allegations, and lack of that compassion which Sai Baba and his followers so often talk about. Bhagani tacitly assumes it is an easy thing for former devotees to submit to the very exacting demands involved in making complex submissions to entities which make exacting demands on those who make claims in extraordinary matters. Leading media ask tough questions. They also have their Legal departments scrutinizing them, not to mention the public.

Sathya Sai Baba Sparks Political Furore

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 21, 2007

Sathya Sai Baba had long consumately mastered – but is now fast losing – the art of playing all things to all politicians, and keeping out of political turmoils. A few recent headlines from Indian newspapers (see below) reveal how his latest “divine” pronouncements have produced a political storm. His former wooing skills ensured for himself formidable political protection for decades, irrespective of what party or coalition ruled the day.

Evidence keeps coming of his serious loss of grip.

BBC Acted “Totally Irresponsibly” Says Ashok Bhagani

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 20, 2007

Ashok Bhagani. Part 3.

In the ‘Eastern Eye’ interview, earlier quoted, the UK head of the Sathya Sai Organization Ashok Bhagani sweepingly declared that the BBC acted “totally irresponsibly”.

Really? The BBC cameras of ‘The Secret Swami’ production team exposed Sai Baba faking the materialization of a gold Shiva lingam, and continued filming some minutes later when Sai Baba inanely pronounced that out of his “stomach there emanated emanated Shiva Lingas of the weight of three tonnes”. Sai Baba told the crowds, “That’s the reason why some strain on the face and the body” http://home.hetnet.nl/~ex-baba/engels/movies.html

How, then, other than to be two-faced, can Ashok Bhagani still ask for evidence to substantiate claims of fraud? When Mark Roche (in his sixties) and Alaya Rahm (in his twenties) spoke in ‘The Secret Swami’ of their sexual molestations at the hands of Sai Baba, how is it that Bhagani grudgingly admitted that such allegations have been circulating for years while simultaneously declaring that they have never been proved? Why have not he and any of the Sathya Sai Organization leaders heeded the calls of (then) leaders – not to mention innumerable rank-and-file members – to responsibly investigate the worldwide allegations? Above all, to put in place proper and professional mechanisms of enquiry and to exercise duty-of-care? Why have not Bhagani and his peers not instituted those objective, best practice processes of accountability and transparency that obtain in the more democratic world – the lack of which have rocked mighty institutions? If this had been done, how could there ever have arisen a highly determined and protracted movement of exposure?

In short, the Soviet-style, cultic Sai Organization has brought upon itself its woes of the last seven or so years of organized former devotee exposure, not to mention the still longer-existing efforts of rationalists, humanists and other critics. These now former leaders include David and Faye Bailey, Serguei Badaev (Russia), Terry Gallagher (the first head of the Australian Sathya Sai Organisation), Stephen Carthew, Hans de Kraker (Australia), Rick Raines, Richard Terry Nelson, Al Rahm, Dr Timothy Conway, Ella Evers, Shirley Pike, Elena and John Hartgering, Lori Kaplowitz, Dave Lamb, Dave Lyons (USA), Conny Larsson, Britt-Marie Andén, and Magnus Vrethammar (Sweden), Robert and Reidun Priddy (Norway), and others. Of so many fine and decent people, Ashok Bhagani unconscionably says:

“These are disgruntled people. They may have been previously Sai Baba devotees, but they are disgruntled, with an axe to grind”

Bhagani, like his co top echelon leaders of the Sathya Sai Organization, would slander former devotees worldwide who poured heart, soul and skills into the social uplift and other work of the Sathya Sai Organization – many of them for decades. Almost overnight, once they spoke out, they have been considered evil-doers and pariahs. In his Christmas 2000 discourse – right when he was confronted by acute dissent and leave-taking in his organization, and by the results of former devotees going to several major media and to UNESCO – Sai Baba called them “Judases”, “demons”, “cawing crows”, said no matter what their number of karmic re-births they would never be redeemed, and charged that his critics were attacking him for money. Many of his followers, mindlessly in like vein, have all along hurled at former devotees epithets such as disgruntled”, “deluded”, “troublemakers,” shunning those whom they have known, loved and respected for many years …..

Accounts by scholars and others who have studied the behaviour of cult leaders and followers under rational questioning attest that the misrepresentations and evasions of Ashok Bhagani and his peers are entirely typical.

Ashok Bhagani Uses Race Card

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 18, 2007

Ashok Bhagani. Part 2.

In The Eastern Eye (June 25, 2004), Ashok Bhagani, head of Sai Baba’s UK Sathya Sai Organization, states:

“I saw the documentary on Thursday and it made my blood boil. The BBC is a premier channel and it was irresponsible of them to show a totally one-sided, biased and unbalanced documentary that they knew may stir something amongst many members of the Asian community”.

One notes Bhagani’s shoddy slide of reasoning to incorporate the entire Asian community. He begs the question that the Indian community at large is somehow favourable to Sathya Sai Baba. It has always been far from being so. A major national Hindu leader has emailed me (December 5, 2006), saying:

“There is considerable concern among the Hindu Community, especially among the educated. It is very hard to get any action from the temples as they do not wish to cause difficulties with the Sathya Sai Baba groups. People are starting to distance themselves from Sathya Sai Baba. It’s going to be gradual process of education. The biggest impact it appears was the ‘The Secret Swami’ … it seems it has had a tremendous negative effect on the SSB”.

UK Sai Baba Head, Ashok Bhagani Exposes Himself

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 17, 2007

(Part I)

As reported in The Eastern Eye (June 25, 2004), Ashok Bhagani, a Trustee of the Sri Sathya Sai Charitable Trust, UK, claims to have been a devotee of Sathya Sai Baba for 38 years. There are also former devotees of Sai Baba who have given notable service to this organization for many decades, who have left it with the highest of ethical motives. One can enquire whether Ashok Bhagani  has undue vested interest in defending his guru, and in providing face-saving disinformation, despite the many facts that have become known. Soon after the searing BBC documentary ‘The Secret Swami’ (2004), Bhagani was interviewed by at least two newspapers, and it is instructive to examine his claims and defenses to vindicate Sathya Sai Baba. In the Asian Voice (June 26, 2004), he states:

“The BBC has acted totally irresponsibly. The allegations in the documentary are completely factless and baseless…What actual evidence does the BBC have to substantiate these claims? These allegations have been circulating for years and have never been proved. As far as I’m concerned, there are 30 million happy devotees in the world, but every so often you will get two or three who will make these wild allegations.”

Is not Bhagani’s estimate of “30 million” not grossly irresponsible? Has he used a respectable polling organization?  Or did he do his own – rather exhausting! -counting of heads, pan world?

Far from acting irresponsibly, the BBC did not conspire at their desks and cobble together a few pulp-fiction articles to make an investigative documentary. It investigated in various countries and, of course, many compelling interviews and testimonies did not make the actual program. David Savill, one of the BBC producers, informed some of us by email that 80-plus hours of footage remain.

But core leaders like Bhagani do not tell their members about those many individuals, including very respected former leaders, who have tried to get the Sathya Sai Organization to deal responsibly with the allegations – transparently, accountably and with duty-of-care. These same former devotees – despite the shocking slurs of Ashok Bhagani, Indulal Shah, Michael Goldstein, G. Venkataraman, Thorbjörn Meyer, Steen Piculell, J. Jagadeesan and others who history cannot help but roundly and shamefully condemn – are in excellent standing in their professions and communities. They stand ready – as they have been before at the most senior levels with several leading world media and organizations such as UNESCO, several governments, police forces as well as major academic and civic institutions that the Sathya Sai Sai Organization has tried to inveigle – to document the results of their careful and principled investigations.

What have Sathya Sai Organization officials like Bhagani to fear from those who raise questions? Here at a glance are but some of the seriously documented allegations: That Sai Baba:

  • is a large-scale serial sexual abuser of boys and young men
  • was complicit in the police killings in his private quarters on June 6, 1993, and the massive cover-up that followed including by local, state and central government authorities
  • countenances and overlooks financial irregularities on a vast scale, including massive donations from abroad that have made (see e.g., the Rediff news organization, August 16, 2003) his Central Trust the largest single recipient of overseas charitable donations
  • makes promises of divine cures that typically do not eventuate
  • produces watches and jewellery which, when assayed, prove to be cheap trinkets
  • utters prophecies that – predictably! – commonly do not eventuate
  • makes monumental blunders about known historic and scientific fact
  • completely contradicts himself across decades of his officially collected, so-called “Divine Discourses”
  • has been formidably protected by successive Indian governments, state and central, and by the Indian police and judiciary at the highest levels

Sai Baba-A Degenerative Disease?

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 16, 2007

sai-babas-pure-gold-chariot.jpg

Or might he fly to us all in his pure golden chariot?

In view of more recent evidence on Sai Baba’s increasing mental and physical deterioration – see yesteday’s entry at: http://tinyurl.com/3b9xzv
‘Sai Baba’s Tip To Keep Ageing Away. But He Couldn’t’, the Australian scholar Brian Steel’s remark of February 2002 seems almost prescient:

‘Since the ‘discrepancies’ appear to be increasing nowadays, is there any possibility that Sai Baba is suffering from a degenerative ageing disease which might have an effect on his thinking and speaking?’ http://bdsteel.tripod.com/More/Nonsense.htm

Likewise, in October 2002, a Swedish psychologist and former devotee, Åsa Samsioe, noting physical signs of Sai Baba’s ageing like his development of a ‘turkey throat’ and also the “low intellectual level” of his discourses, remarked:

‘He must have one heck of a job, Sathya Sai Baba… it can’t be easy to age in his situation, besides being under so much criticism as he has recently been… not surprising that it leaves its marks. Occasionally I think ‘poor man’… feel some pity for him. A whole life built on lies… captured by the myth about himself… to be the object of the projections of millions… and to be forced , at least outwardly, to live up to all the expectations put to him… to always have to have all those people around him’. http://home.no.net/anir/Sai/enigma/Swede4.htm

Watershed year for India-U.S. relations, says Rocca

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 12, 2007

Report by Ela Dutt, House International Relations Subcommitte for Asia and the Pacific. Source: Indian American Center for Political Awareness. Updated on 05 February, 2007. http://tinyurl.com/yqgfmo

‘The year 2005 is a watershed year in the relations between India and the United States declared Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Christina Rocca at the State Department. But there are significant hurdles to overcome, she cautioned ….

‘While democracy had a tradition in the region, Rocca said, “…democratic institutions are seriously challenged in parts of the region.” The U.S. is helping develop democratic tools such as the rule of law, independent media, grass roots activism, good governance and transparency through which these nations can address the fundamental problems of extremism, security, and development. Their success will bolster stability throughout the region. Progress in South Asia will have global consequences.” ‘

Leaving aside the question of whether the present U.S. Administration is in the choicest position to be mentoring democracy to other countries, the Christina Rocca observation sits well with other reports that India is undergoing some major and, trustfully, beneficial changes. Earlier comments at https://barrypittard.wordpress.com referred to some encouraging signs of a popular Indian backlash against police and judicial corruption. It expressed the wish that this groundswell from the Indian populace will come to include speaking out against Sathya Sai Baba and those of his closest servitors who do the ill works (despite the presence of the good social works upfront). These moral and spiritual outrages the BBC-termed ‘Secret Swami’ and his managers keep from the world, as well as from the wider membership of the Sathya Sai Organization. The earlier reports were discussed at: http://tinyurl.com/2m2wa4

“For many, 2006 has been a watershed in Indian legal history”, states Sanjoy Majumder, Friday, 5 January 2007, BBC News, Delhi:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6224701.stm

and:

Tim Sullivan (Thur., Mar/09/2006) Associated Press reported, “What surprised India was its own reaction: Protesters took to the streets, holding candlelight vigils and waving signs calling for justice; newspapers have kept the story on the front page day after day; officials from the president to the capital’s police chief have called for a review of the investigation. In a country that had all but resigned itself to its barely functioning legal system, a backlash was born”.

(Above photo – a graphic artist’s impression of the Dr G. Venkataraman-Sai Baba-Idi Amin Love-Fest).

Note: Trying to escape the facts, without success The pro-Sai libelers CO2000 (Lisa de Witt of Arizona) and the untrustworthy ‘Joe108’ who is Gerald Moreno of Las Cruces, New Mexico, tried to avoid the key facts and the above issues by making a big thing out of the composite nature of the image wherever they can, calling it a ‘false picture’ etc. – but in fact it is an excellent figurative representation of the actual situation. They also ignored the blog where the image was shown with the caption THIS [MANIPULATED] IMAGE INDICATES THE ACTUAL RELATIONSHIP (see here). The impostor Gerald Moreno, who actually wrote under the name of sathyasaibaba on his wordpress blog, himself manipulated images (here is his most vulgar masterpiece where he hid behind the names Equalizer and Premaperme) http://sanjaydadlaniexposed.blogspot.com/2005/12/dadlani-likes-merged-images-me-too.html and distorting people’s faces! With their agenda of total denial of every single fact they wished to avoid, the mendacious pair relied almost entirely on tendentious side-issues, baseless slurs, and untrue claims as the backbone of their obsessive denial agenda.

The block quote seen below my comment is from Robert Priddy’s just added page at:

The movie Robert Priddy has referred to won the American actor Forest Whitaker, as Amin, enormous praise. My own blog on the Sai Baba-G. Venkataraman-Idi Amin lovefest is HERE.

See the real late dictator close up

The issue is not about high profile leaders who unavoidably find themselves mixing with monstrous human beings – for example, dignitaries simply going about their formal duties, such as a King, Queen, President etc. The clear issue is that both Sai Baba and G. Venkataraman enthused warmly about recollections of Sai Baba’s visit to Idi Amin in Uganda in 1968, saying how Amin and his retinue were in copious tears of devotion for Sai Baba. Given that Amin was one of the world’s greatest monsters – causing a holocaust estimated at 400,000 people, torturing, raping, engaging in violent orgies and cannibalism – Sai Baba (who claims to be all-knowing and God fully manifest on earth and come to save the planet before he leaves it) and Venkataraman showed the most appalling bad taste and absence of judgement. If Idi Amin gets a laugh in hell, this may be the only one. We see yet another of countless evidences that the archilles heels of Sai Baba and his topmost servitors are being ever increasingly exposed.

‘This programme was first sent on the Norwegian National TV Channel (NRK1) 22-2-2007 in the presence of Norway’s Prime Minister, Jens Stoltenberg (bottom right). The presenter was Fredrik Skavlan. It was repeated on NRK2 on 3 February 2007. The occasion was the release of the feature film about the most gruesome of African dictators, Idi Amin, entitled ‘The Last King of Scotland’. Sathya Sai Baba visited Amin twice and has recently spoken of him in the most glowing words as a devotee supported warmly by his main propagandist, Dr. G. Venkataraman. In short, Sai Baba lent himself to Idi Amin’s extreme black supremacist stance, by travelling to Kampala and visiting him in 1968 at the time when he was becoming a most powerful voice in Africa. Sai Baba – who pretends to be chaste and demands this of all devotees – himself tells how he was introduced to and shook hands with two rows of Idi Amin’s wives, thus accepting the extremely profligate Idi Amin’s polygamy too! Both in word and actions he favoured this monster of inhumanity, so what does that say? Sai Baba could have avoided Amin completely if he had been so minded… but no, he even accepted a dinner invitation from Amin and enthused about it in his recent discourse’:

Psychotherapist’s Note On Ullrich Zimmermann’s Sexual Abuse Allegation Against Sathya Sai Baba

Posted by Barry Pittard on February 5, 2007

I have asked some contacts to view the Ullrich Zimmermann interviews.  Part 2 is found here.

Indeed, a most instructive comparison is afforded by viewing the Mark Roche interview with the BBC as well as the Zimmermann interview. Mark Roche is a California man, highly regarded in his community and once associated with many seminal figures in the Sai Baba movement, like Elsie and Walter Cowan (big Sai Baba philanthropists), Dr John Hislop, Dr Michael Goldstein, Bob Bozzani, and so on. With a degree of courage known best to those of us in touch with him at the time, Mark at last spoke out in his sixties, when interviewed by the BBC for its 2004 television documentary ‘The Secret Swami’. A film clip is at: http://www.rfjvds.dds.nl/thesecretswami/marcroche.wmv
The text transcript section of Mark Roche’s interview by the BBC’s Tanya Datta that refers to his fellating Sai Baba when a young man is found here.

Both individuals, like others from various countries and over many years, report Sai Baba requiring that they suck his penis (fellatio).

For detailed discussion of the Zimmermann testimony, see Robert Priddy’s page – Ex-Sai Devotee Speaks Out Convincingly About Sai Baba Sex.

The contacts are veteran professionals in the sexual abuse area, coming from various disciplines: psychiatry, psychology, psychotherapy and social work. Their reports, along with their qualifications, accreditations and contact details, will be made available to bona fide investigators from reputed media, government, lawfirms or various institutions and individuals genuinely interested in establishing the facts about Sathya Sai Baba and core leaders of his Sathya Sai Organization. The latter are no different to those powerful organizations, such as the churches, which have been shatteringly exposed for profound cover-ups of sexual and other abuses and who tried to resist both concerned internal and independent, third-party enquiry. Many of these institutions, now to the contrary, are under extensive reform and have put in place processes of accountability and duty-of-care. The Sathya Sai Organization and its founder have refused to do so. They will enter history as one of the wealthiest, most antiquated but powerful bastions holding out against modern processes of truthful disclosure and reform. The writer of the following is a woman psychotherapist, who undertakes to look at Parts 1 and 3 of the Ullrich Zimmermann interviews when time allows. (Her identity and qualifications are available to accredited members of her profession). She says:

“Ullrich Zimmermann is to be commended for coming forward with this material. He did not – at least those seven years ago – feel that Sathya Sai Baba was doing anything wrong. At many times during the interview, it struck me that Ullrich had been programmed by his prior knowledge of Sai Baba (his staunch devotee mother’s influence and so on) to expect that anything that would happen to him at the ashram and during an interview would be in his best interest. He says “I trusted him to do the right thing … totally trusted him … trusted that he would only do what is good for me.” With this mindset, he was able to suspend his normal rational mind, and enter into a disassociated state. Throughout, he was convinced of Sai Baba’s powers to “erase karma” and to “uplift” him. He thought the experiences – what the law and many cultures deem to be sexual molestations – were meant for his healing. It was as if there had been a kind of spiritual-medical treatment done for his good. That the behaviour would not be tolerated by professional or other ethics does not occur to him. Ullrich’s disappointment and criticism is for himself – that he was not able to maintain that “high energy” which he received from Sai Baba’s treatment. “Sai Baba had said I will change you completely.  It took years, and still I don’t feel abused. (I) didn’t have any means of keeping that energy. Lost that state in 5 weeks”. Later, Ullrich laments that he relapsed into old ways and never followed through with the devotion and going to the groups etc., so as to get empowered, as it were. Perhaps there is an implied criticism of Sai Baba for not creating a change that would last.

The damage to Ullrich took place a long time before any molestation. Its genesis would have to have occurred over that period when he became steeped in the Sai Baba mystique – when he accepted and trusted fully, as so many do, that Sai B Baba was God, all powerful and all loving.  This type of process is a basic one for cult adherence. Susceptible individuals suspend their rational process, and use the ‘magical thinking’ brain.  There is almost no limit to what many will accept and do under these circumstances. Being psychologically needy and dependent puts one at risk in such powerful situations. Organized religions have crafted techniques with rituals that suggest magic. A great many  forever search for ways of dealing with their mortality in a magical way.

I haven’t yet watched the other videos — there  may be  more along this line”.
