Indian Nuclear Scientist Now Sathya Sai Baba’s Global Radio Chief

Posted by Barry Pittard on October 8, 2007

Sathya Sai Baba’s chief international propagandist (via Sai Global Harmony and WorldSpace International Satellite Radio Service) is Dr G. Venkataraman. He is also deputy head of the immensely wealthy and influential world Sathya Sai Organization, and formerly an Indian nuclear scientist on highly sensitive projects.

His former colleague was the late Dr S. Bhagavantham, also a nuclear scientist, who was Chief Scientific Advisor to the Indian Department of Defense, and for many years, Sathya Sai Baba’s principal translator. (I have confidentially, and reliably, been informed circumstances of Bhagavantham’s leave-taking of Sathya Sai Baba – it is a sad account and does justice to Bhagavantham, and not at all for Sathya Sai Baba. Whether the latter’s family and friends can ever reveal the story is a moot point).

While inveighing against dissenting former devotees of Sathya Sai Baba (who come from many countries), Dr G. Venkataraman has made a major point of citing Indian leaders like former Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee and immediate ex-President A.P.J. Kalam (who was designer of India’s nuclear device delivery vehicles) as those who support Sai Baba.

If you squint a little, you can just make out a nuclear aura around Sai Baba.

Top Vajpayee Minister Thinks BBC Was Plotting

But for a glimpse at the clearly morally bankrupt showing of the Vajpayee government on many allegations facing Sathya Sai Baba, see the video clip from the BBC’s The Secret Swami (2004), HERE.

Datta, Tanya

Confronted by the BBC’s charming interviewer Tanya Datta, who asked perfectly fair questions, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi, a cabinet Minister in the Vajpayee government, soon lost his temper, showed himself to be a thorough bully. He jabbed away with pointed finger at the taken-aback Ms Datta, accusing the BBC and “people in England” of plotting against Sai Baba, his devotee A.B. Vajpayee and P.N. Bhagwati (a key Sathya Sai Central Trust member and former Chief Justice of India). As the interview progresses, Joshi arrogantly shouts at her:

Joshi:

Well I have read something and I’m, I know Sai Baba very well, I know most of these people very well. And I can say that whatever Mr Vajpayee has said is the correct position.

Tanya Datta:
Isn’t the point really that any possible investigation by the state of Sai Baba would be compromised?

Joshi:
No, no, there has been no, you see, there’s no question, any false allegation, you see. I know that this is a case in which your BBC is, is involved and people from England are, have been making certain charges against Sai Baba

Joshi then reminded one of the world chairman of the Sathya Sai Organization, Dr Michael Goldstein –

Sathya Sai Baba Chief, Dr Goldstein, Explodes. “I am the consummate professional” (See Film Clips) – when he was caught by the BBC’s hidden camera – a measure that was only taken when BBC production, senior management and legals saw that there was gross and repeated cultic evasion and non-accountability).

Joshi too lost his temper. Joshi too, blustered and smokescreened. Joshi too, in a show of a dark side too patent and potent for any sensible view to miss, reacted angrily and overbearingly:

“No, no, no… You don’t know the meaning of interviewing a minister in my capacity, as a minister of my stature”. (See my article at ‘Call For Media and Government Investigation of Sathya Sai Baba’, The BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ – A Revision)

Dr G. Venkataraman and Bill Aitkin Allege BBC Plot

In his article, G. Venkataraman is also partial to the conspiratorial view. He quotes, very approvingly, the English devotee Bill Aitkin (author of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, A Life. Viking Books, 2004), who typically spends many months at Sai Baba’s ashram in Puttaparthi. He says that:

“Aitkin has given a stirring defence of Swami … Here is what Aitkin has to say about the BBC, and he gives on behalf of all of us a stinging reply to slander with all the required passion! Aitkin says: ‘The BBC is ultimately governed by the Anglican establishment, and churches in the west are losing out financially to the appeal of the Sai Baba movement'”.

Venkataraman triumphantly concludes:

“Well, there it is – all the rebuttal of the BBC that you have always wanted, that too from an Englishman!”

It is indicative and revealing that Sai Baba’s defenders like G. Venkataraman, feel the need to defend his Godhood by reference to politicians, presidents present and past or, for example, prostrate to an Englishman who does not produce a single argument for his conspiracy contention.

Top Indian Leaders Who Accept Sai Baba, Good. Former Devotee Dissenters, Bad

Such is the Orwellian logic, in matters non-nuclear, of Dr G. Venkataraman.

Except among the naive, there is tremendous skepticism in India about politicians, as I know from my years of living there. Did Venkataraman even pause to consider the perceptions of politicians in the minds of a great many? Of politicians who like to be pictured in advantageous places, consorting with those who will fetch most and endanger fewest votes? And make high-sounding promises and then break them? Of politicians who blatantly lie, and play about with nuclear toys (of matters nuclear Venkataraman is well-acquainted)? Of politicians who are anything but spiritual characters?

Of course, we all have our national crosses to bear.

Venkataraman would try – in his newsletter aimed at devotees, firm and infirm, around the world – to ‘authorize’ his God by reference to politicians and other compromised notables, and to denounce former devotees in large numbers who were for long highly regarded when they were Sai devotees – and still much esteemed for their integrity by their wider communities.

In proclaiming Sai Baba’s divinity, why cite politicians, presidents etc., or a conspiratorially-minded Englishman – whose poor attempt at scholarship has been carefully dissected and exposed by a real scholar, Brian Steel (see link on Aitkin’s name above) – as guarantor of goodness?
